Audio-video interleave, an early video container that sucked because you couldn’t play it unless it was complete, making it unfit for streaming. The only use I can think of nowadays is to generate an NTSC MPEG-2 file that even early DVD+USB players will play, for testing composite video equipment.

I remember there was a water treatment plant or something similar that got hacked. The hackers started messing with the levels of the chemical mixtures to poison an entire city. The only reason it didn’t end in catastrophe is because there was somebody watching that specific screen at the exact moment it happened. Seeing this made that scenario more terrifying.

exocrinous ,

Humans are really really good at separating themselves from their own violent actions. For example, many humans drive a car and eat meat.

Zacryon ,

That’s not separation, but a different ethical concept or a lack of thought about one.

flashgnash ,

How’s driving a car violent? Not exactly good for the environment but I wouldn’t classify that as violent or seriously harmful to any individual (assuming you don’t run anyone over)

Syn_Attck ,

The unethical treatment (borderline or literal slavery) to get the metals the car runs on. Same with real diamonds and gems, meat, many other things.

Aqarius , in How often had I overlooked women's contributions ?

IIRC “Calendar” was one of the proposed solutions, but the bone actually had a lot more than 28 holes. It’s one of the reasons it’s purpose is considered unknown.

I always find this particular strain of antiintellectualism deeply ironic, because it claims to oppose women being forgotten, but the premise assumes the “scientists” are all male.

idiomaddict ,

I don’t see it assuming scientists are all men. Women are just as capable of internalized misogyny and just as capable of being dense as men.

With the willendorf Venus, it wasn’t until a woman who had already had children worked with it, that they suspected it might be a pregnancy self portrait. There had been women already there, but none who knew what a pregnant person looks like from that perspective.

Aqarius ,

Ok, now that example I like very much!

idiomaddict ,

I’ve never been 7+ months pregnant (not a sad thing in my case, no worries), but I can 100% imagine that it feels like being the willendorf Venus. I love the idea of some woman however long ago half annoyed and half teasing making it and giving it to the father, saying “this is what I am now,” though.

bane_killgrind ,

“never more than 2 weeks pregnant” would be much less alarming, but it does have the implication of yeeting blastocysts at the grim reaper, however many or few…

idiomaddict ,

I just meant showing, I’ve never been past seven weeks, thankfully.

feedum_sneedson ,

I really like that idea, in principle, of a sculptor with no reflection to work from doing a self-portrait. But seriously, even somebody having triplets doesn’t look like that unless they’re like… super morbidly obese already. Even accounting for foreshortening, I mean damn. That kind of figure is a strictly modern invention. But maybe, it’s still an interesting idea. But seriously.

idiomaddict ,

I’ve got a bmi of 19 and it doesn’t look so significantly different looking down when I’m not pregnant, lol. I even asked my husband to confirm it wasn’t hella body dysmorphia. When she’s on tour, the jet when she’s touring on serves the entertainment of lots of people, not just her. In the same way a venue does. When divided among lots of people it’s meaningless fraction of the transportation of the audience.

    I also think worrying about a few people is a way to discredit climate change concerns.

    Regulations and investing in better energy sources are what matters. I don’t give a fuck about a few rich fucks with yachts and airplanes. I care about policy and how society distributes resources and energy.

    All aviation accounts for less than 2% of emissions. Private jets are a tiny fraction of that. But now we’re talking about that instead of the actual issue. This serves climate change deniers. This serves the Republican agenda, and the pertrol agenda. You’re doing that right now.

    cygon ,

    The problem I have with the “hypocrisy” argument is that, here, it’s used as a cheap attack on the messenger.

    As in the old meme: https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/a3a6f328-a573-4e36-8f91-620016965432.png

    (poor peasant doing labor: “we should improve society somewhat”, grinning contemporary person: “yet you participate in society, curious! I am very intelligent.”)

    I can accept it when influential people, even those that cause a whole lot of emissions themselves, advocate for climate programs. We won’t get anywhere if, whoever wants to talk about the environment, first has to become a cave dweller and give up their reach before they’re allowed to speak up.

    On the other hand, when Fox News, a channel that generally panders to the coal lobby, car industry and oil barons, suddenly becomes concerned about someone’s CO2 emissions just to serve up another smear, that is hypocrisy, plain and simple.

    Rustmilian ,
    @Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

    How would “Lemmy Gold” even work?

    kunaltyagi ,

    It might be something built using digital payments with no transaction fee (and a percentage for currency conversion)

    Not possible globally, but in India and the Nordics, such standards are already in use. (No private apps like venmo which can’t inter-operate don’t count)

    Rustmilian ,
    @Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

    But where would the money go?
    To the instance of the one paying or the one receiving the gold? What benefits would there be? Reddit gives 1 mouth free ads to the receiver, but we don’t have ads in the first place. Would the comment of the receiver be boosted and by how much? If someone has 100 upvotes on their comment and, someone else has 50 upvotes and a gold on their comment would that comment be be boosted above the 100 upvoted one?

    Implementating this is more complex than one might think.

    ynthrepic ,
    @ynthrepic@lemmy.world avatar

    My idea is that you would as the recipient get to nominate a charity from a list of effective charities, as well as send a tip to whatever Lemmy instance you use. You get the little digital gold mark on your comment/post too naturally.

    Rustmilian ,
    @Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

    Interesting idea

    aberrate_junior_beatnik ,

    The problem Fox News have with Taylor Swift isnt her carbon emissions, it is her hypocrisy.

    I mean, no. If she didn’t fly on a private jet, they’d find something else to ding her on. Their problem with her is that she’s not entirely on their side.

    chris ,

    They’re good at finding dings. You know, like, how she’s super old and that’s gross.

    jkrtn ,

    I would accept that as a rationale only if they also held regressives to the same standards that regressives are pretending to have. There are no Fox News segments like, “allegedly ‘pro-life’ Texas Repubs urge for entangling humans in razor wire, extrajudicial executions by drowning.”

    But actually, what they’re doing is ad hominem. This is not, “Swift is behaving contrary to her message and needs to stop,” it is, “Swift is behaving contrary to her message and therefore climate change is a global hoax so that ‘they’ can force you to eat bugs and have an electric car with a remote shutoff.”

    It is ad-hominem to start with and hypocrisy and propaganda all the way down to the core. Fox News in a nutshell.

    Mango ,

    And what about theirs?

    orcrist ,

    You don’t get to pick and choose what Fox News has said in the past. Their position is that climate change is vastly exaggerated and largely a hoax, and depending who you talk to they might have a stronger view.

    You don’t get to forget what they said in the past and present and choose a totally new position, where the main focus is on hypocrisy. Because if Fox News believes what it has said for the last 20 years, then the actual reasoning is that Taylor Swift is acting hypocritically but it’s irrelevant. In other words, if they want to have integrity they would need to undercut their own story.

    You personally are free to have a position that purely focuses on hypocrisy if you haven’t already made public statements on climate change. But Fox News is stuck with positions it has already endorsed and continues to endorse. I mean we know that Fox News has no credibility but if you thought that they should, then this is something they can’t avoid.

    WallEx , in Well then..

    From my understanding theft has always been to take something and after the other party doesn’t have it anymore. This never applied to piracy.

    For example: I used to pirate games back in school as I didn’t have the money to buy them. So there is no financial loss for the company. Yet they still frame it as bank robbery or something. “You wouldn’t download a car”

    Its based on the false assumption that you would actually buy every single piece of media if you didn’t chose to copy it.

    It’s all fake and people accept it. Such is the world.

    LoamImprovement ,

    Actually, I do tend to buy my games when they’re available (and affordable) on the platforms I already use, but I’ve also sailed the high seas just because I didn’t feel like paying $70 for a game that I didn’t think was worth $70 and offered no demo for me to confirm my suspicions, or that was platform-exclusive on a platform that I don’t use.

    I think the thing is, if I could buy a file and know that I would own it in perpetuity, and while the company that sold it to me still existed, would offer the best support they could for it, I’d be a lot more amicable to the prospect of curating a legal digital library. But the way it is now, with exclusivity deals, licensing terms, intrusive DRM, Fomo bonuses, and the implication that pirating old unsupported software is a crime just because whoever owns the rights might decide to repackage it and lease it to you again and again, if they feel like it?

    And keep in mind, these are the same ghouls who insist on making live service games, adding loot boxes and micro transactions, just to prey on the most susceptible people. They’re responsible for good talent leaving or retiring just because they get in the way of people who want to make good games, which would be profitable, but maybe not as profitable as the shareholders want them to be. ZA/UM got eaten from within, Arkane withered down to nothing because they were forced to make a live service game, I can’t count how many studios got tanked or cannibalized by EA and Blizzard/Activision. Corporate is a cancer.

This also applies to other political subjects. I mean a poor republican who works a terribly paying job with no worker rights or healthcare would actively vote against politicians who say they’d want to change that situation, just to make sure that underage girls that got raped are forced to give birth to their unwanted childs they then can’t provide for.

    Not allergic, but the very thought of onions (and garlic) in pregnancy made me feel sick. Smelling them or seeing them cooked (with their translucent little stripes) would have me heaving. All the foods I love have onions and garlic in. It was awful.

    xX_fnord_Xx ,

    It’s odd, after years of washing dishes for a job I can’t stand the smell of garlic or onions when it is coming from the grease left over on a plate or cook wear, but when they are first being cooked the aroma makes my mouth water.

    You don’t understand. It needs to be POWDER for me to enjoy something with onions in it

    Siethron ,

    They’re the worst when diced, especially in something like stir fry. Your chewing your rice/veggie similar consistency mix then all the sudden you get either a crunchy flake (for uncooked onions) or a tiny piece of wet paper (for cooked).

    I realize this rant is childish, but my sensory issues make this a big deal for me and I need to put my foot down… even if it causes my heel to light up.

    Wilzax ,

    Fine dice and a little caramelization removes all noticeable texture in anything chewable. Improves the flavor too.

    For garlic, you either roast or mince, both of which soften the texture way down

    WelcomeBear ,

    Cooked onions, I suppose I’d agree. They’re just kinda mushy. Raw onions on the other hand have a great crunchy texture to me.

    Thick sliced raw onion rings on burgers fluffs the whole thing up a bit and adds some airy crunch.

    They add a nice crunchy texture to Greek salad as well.

    Cut into lengthwise strips, they’re similarly fun in stir-fry if you don’t cook them too long.

    Diced on top of a tostada or taco or bagel with cream cheese and lox, they add a little crunchy something but admittedly this could be also be achieved with pretty much anything not-squishy.

    Psychodelic ,

    This is awesome. lol. I never once thought of adding air to my burgers. If I want crunch I’d add some bacon or even curly fries

    @FoxFairline@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    Me too. Gives you the farts and they taste like copper. My mum used to put it in everything and i always disliked it. Since cook at home i never use them in and never will.

    KuroiKaze ,

    Or they are a super taster. I love spices, curry, cumin, hot peppers (even Carolina reaper), and have been to twenty five countries but onion is fucking disgusting and I never ever want to eat one.

    Shellbeach ,

    Dude, just admit you’re boring

    EnderMB ,

    Some people have intolerances to onions, and I feel so, so sorry for them. I can’t think of many meals where onions don’t improve the flavour.

    Shelbyeileen ,
    @Shelbyeileen@lemmy.world avatar

    It’s hard. I still eat garlic on occasion, even though it makes me sick. Luckily, I’ve always had a bad reaction with an onion, so my body rejects the flavor too

    dubyakay ,

    What about the dried spices?

    Shelbyeileen ,
    @Shelbyeileen@lemmy.world avatar

    I can have a bit of onion powder, but dried onions wreck my stomach

    HulkSmashBurgers ,

    Oh that just sucks. Scallions too?

    The first time I got covid it really messed with my smell and taste. Any kind of onions just smelled and tasted completely rotten, even onion powder. Ruined all my favorite foods, even if it was just a small part of the meal. I had just made some pickled red onions and I couldn’t eat them for like 6-8 months. Worst part of covid for me by far.

    SorryQuick ,

    Cooked onions are fine, but raw red onions in salads give me terrible headaches, I always feel bad picking them out.

    johannesvanderwhales ,

    I usually think that they’re probably not very knowledgeable about what goes in their food. It’s frankly very difficult to avoid onion entirely.

    acockworkorange ,

    I love all onions. Except red ones. Fuck 'em.

    I like onions, but the texture can be a big problem for me, depending on the day. Doesn’t matter how it’s prepared: raw, sauteed, cooked, cooked within an inch of its life, does not make a difference

    callyral ,
    @callyral@pawb.social avatar

    i hate onions because of their texture in the food. i want food that has the added taste of onions without the onions, or just have them be very small.

    Maybe mushrooms are still in the “build userbase” phase. Soon they will begin with the enshittification, raise the prices, put normal quality of life functions behind a paywall and add ads.

    gibmiser ,

    Tbf to the mushrooms, enshitification does sound like it would be good for them, botanically speaking.

    Jck2905 ,

    I should not have laughed as hard as I did at this🤣

    joostjakob ,

    IIRC, this actually happens. When the balance is disturbed, the mushrooms go wild and destroy young sapplings. Could be I recall incorrectly and it’s actually other species. I cannot recommend The Mother Tree enough, it goes into great detail of the history of research into this

    Upper class problems

    @spicytuna62@lemmy.world avatar

    My mother seriously recommended I hire cleaners if I wasn’t able to always keep my place clean at a time in my life where I was super busy.

    I made like $30k in 2014. I wasn’t poor by any stretch, but suggesting I hire cleaners was a clear indicator of how out of touch she was with the lower half of the middle class.

    CluckN ,

    That’s what $14 an hour? That’s minimum wage in most U.S states.

    spicytuna62 , (edited )
    @spicytuna62@lemmy.world avatar

    I graduated college in ‘14 and got my first professional job that August. I made $17.09 an hour and I was an 85% FTE. I was still in grad school at the time (never finished, whoops). That inflates to right about $22 today, if the BLS’ inflation numbers are to be trusted. Or about $39k at 85% FTE

    My rent was $800 in uptown Oklahoma City.

    Again, I was doing alright for a single guy with a bachelor’s degree at 22 with little work experience. I kept my bills and rent paid. I got to buy a PC component every once in a while. Sure, I wasn’t going on vacation every year, but I wasn’t starving.

    But I was a long way away from hiring cleaners. I couldn’t really afford a therapist back then. Which I desperately needed more than I realized.

    Oklahoma’s minimum wage still follows federal, but most places do start at $9 or $10 anymore. Still not nearly enough. And that’s really in the city. Out in the sticks, you’re making $7.25.

    brianorca ,

    It is now but the comment mentioned 2014.

    rwhitisissle ,

    Comfortable middle class. Upper class people have full time servants. They don’t come to your house. They’re just always there.

    DragonTypeWyvern ,

    The traditional definition of middle class was being able to afford a servant or two.

    These days it’s certainly well within middle class income to hire a cleaning service, have groceries delivered, etc.

    KoalaUnknown ,

    My mother makes a near median salary but still hires someone to clean her apartment every 2 weeks because she hates cleaning. To pay for it and other things she does pet sitting and travel booking on the side.

    This shit can be avoided by DNS blocks, Revanced, ublock (Firefox)

    Fuck that all.

    Custoslibera OP ,

    It’s gotten real bad for me just in the last week.

    Videos load really slowly, constantly stops when I play a playlist of videos.

    I have had ad blockers for over a decade now, it’s never been this bad.

    CookieManTheGreat ,

    Youtube itself, even in a completely blank Chrome browser, runs like i have 20 downloads running and simultaneously stream 4 animes its a absolute disgrace to humanity.

    ChonkyOwlbear ,

    I’ve been using NewPipe since I found out about it. Ad free YouTube with no slow down that I can see.

    Stoneykins ,

    Really? My main reason for still trying to use adblockers instead of NewPipe or another frontend is that every one I’ve tried is slooooow. Is there a setting I should change or something???

    tpihkal ,

    Same

    wewbull ,

    Also libretube (android client to piped.video so you don’t connect to YouTube at all) and clipious (android client to invidious) are worth looking at too. You’ll need to tweak the servers you connect to to get good performance, but both work quite nicely.

    grue ,

    Alternative interfaces like NewPipe, FreeTube, etc. work fine for what they are, but I prefer using a web browser because I actually like Youtube keeping track of my watch history and its recommendation algorithm works (reasonably) well for me.

    All the alternative interfaces have privacy from Google as a primary design goal, so they want you to import your subscriptions and let them keep track of what you watched locally, but the consequence and downside of that is that it doesn’t synchronize across devices (e.g. FreeTube on my Linux desktop and NewPipe on my phone). At least not without a bunch of extra effort on my part manually importing and exporting, anyway.

    TragicNotCute ,
    @TragicNotCute@lemmy.world avatar

    The slow erosion of my enjoyment of YouTube inspired me to get Plex set up and start rewatching some classic shows I love. It’s been a great experience. No ads, no wait times, just entertainment.

    Gestrid , in Everything I need is still in in the old settings windows that haven't changed in 23 years

    Remember when they planned to move over all the Control Panel settings to the Settings app?

    In Windows 10?

    cyberpunk007 ,

    I still extensively use:

    Win+R

    ncpa.cpl

    It’s still the only way I know how to easily and quickly change my NIC settings.

    The worst part is to change some things it adds like an extra 4 clicks to the old method.

    purplemonkeymad ,

    Windows 11 had a link to that in under the advanced network options.

    I say had as a recent update just took it away. They added a new advanced settings to replace the network connections part you linked to, but it is still missing options. Almost 10 years of the new settings and still no way to enable split tunneling on a vpn in the new UI.

    BirdyBoogleBop ,

    I’m 90% sure that is the only way to change settings past just showing what you are connected to. Does/can anyone actually use settings over the control panel tools?

    cyberpunk007 ,

    I still don’t know this and we are already talking windows 12 lol

    w2tpmf ,

    You can reduce keystrokes on that. Just tap the Win key instead of Win+R. Type ncpa.cpl and hit enter.

    cyberpunk007 ,

    If you work on as many servers and desktops as I do, you’ll eventually encounter machines that have slow loading start menus and search, or search the web for some stupid ass reason instead. I’ll save that time with adding R. Still a 1 handed move anyhow

    BaskinRobbins ,

    or search the web for some stupid ass reason

    The reason was actually documented at the end of Halo 3; when Cortana got rampancy and subsequently infected all of our windows 10 start menus.

    w2tpmf ,

    If you’re such a server and desktop expert, why are you not setting a GPO to disable the start menu web features??

    cyberpunk007 ,

    If you’re such a server and desktop support expert, how do you gpo random client that call in, or new client and environments when you know nothing about them, or friend and families computers?

    Listen, kid, when you’ve been in the game long enough you’ll come across unique scenarios enough to a point where it is God damn annoying.

    Also who the hell GPOs network settings?

    w2tpmf ,

    Kid. Lol. I’ve been in the game since before the invention of Windows servers

    The start menu searching the web isn’t a network setting. It’s a setting for the behavior of the start menu.

    You change a single flag in the registry on Windows and it tells the Start Menu not to do the behavior of searching the web. The unusual scenario as you cannot it is a common feature that can be turned on and off. The GPO lets you set that flag administratively. It’s not unique, and it’s something my level 1 help desk guys under my teams had no problem learning.

    You’ve either been in the game long enough to become senile or the more likely case is your the kid and have no idea what you’re doing.

    Bonus: there’s another flag to set the Start Menu to not search files. Set that one too and the search is lightning fast and only shows you programs and settings options.

    And then at the final click, it takes you to that control panel screen anyway lol
