I liked stumbleupon. It feels like they are less website to stumbleupon anymore

TIL in the Carboniferous Period, no fungus existed to decompose trees. They just grew on top of each other up and up.

The weight of the trees was so great that the ones on the bottom got squished and became coal. That’s where coal is from. Bonus fact: the whole time this was happening, sharks were hunting in the oceans. Sharks are older than trees and fungus!

@dumples@kbin.social avatar

Thank God for fungi. They do so much for us and now eating plastics. We really need something to eat it all

They are both angry boomer assholes. That sounds about right.

Don't forget that therapists fall under multiple different educations that have a different origin and therefore different values. Psychologist, social workers, counselor and licensed marriage and family therapists all perform therapy and different educations with different emphasis. So depending on who you see this will have an affect as well.

    This is really true when you think about how much wages have fallen behind for years. To make up that much ground there needs to massive raises. Like the ones won by UAW recently. It will take time until that happens

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    I like this simple graph and article. It shows that inflation has slowed but since it always a positive the total affect is still large.

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    Exactly. We need a much higher minimum raise

    What would be the consequences of a smallsword wound to the belly?

    I’m 20, I practice fencing. My height is 192 cm, I usually fence against shorter opponents. They often manage to drive their smallsword into my belly. That’s why I’m curious: what would it be like to get wounded into the belly by a real smallsword? How lethal would it be? How painful? How would I react?

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    It's fencing so I would make it a rapier which is 1d8+ Dex. But I agree about the crit. Better hope it's not a rogue....

    I traveled last summer to Europe and I remember thinking about how cheap every meal was compared to back home. I don't even live in an "expensive" city

    Especially for lunch, pubs and food halls. They were designed for regular people with deals and prices where you can have it everyday. This is even in expensive Norway and Denmark. I got a good hot dog for like 5 bucks cheaper in Scandinavia than back home. It's ridiculous

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    Exactly. Locally made delicious food for cheaper. Both out for simple meals or prepared at grocery. It's made for normal people

    Why Didn't Democrats Do More When They Controlled Both Houses of Legislature, The White House, and The Supreme Court During Obama's First Term?

    I’ve been wondering for a bit why during the time the Democrats controlled the legislature, executive, and judicial branches during Obama’s first term in 2008 more wasn’t accomplished. Shouldn’t that have been the opportunity to make Row V Way law and fix the electoral college? I understand the recession was going on but...

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    Also a very important point here was how much more non-political the supreme court was then. No one would ever consider Roe vs Wade could be overturned or even want it. There were generally agreed upon rules that the supreme courts and courts in general were populated with the most qualified people. Judge appointments were scrapped by gentleman agreements if the Senator from the state where the judge was from didn't support the nomination. Same if any of the non-partisan law associations said the person wasn't qualified enough. So most judges were well qualified and if they were more conservative or liberal wasn't as big of a consideration. There were plenty of "conservative" judges appointed judges nominated by democratic and vice versa. This all change with Mitch McConnell blocking Merrick Garland appointment to the supreme court who was suggested as the more moderate alternative. This lead to the hyper partisanship of the supreme court we see now with the trump appointees. This is why trust in the organization has eroded so fast. Since it all happened so fast and judges are acting much more politically instead of following law and precedent

    Go watch a roller derby event. It's pretty fun and mostly chaos. But there's some real skill and strategy involved.

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    I just want to add all of the organic material that makes soil different from sand. Erosion will turn rocks into small rocks which we call sand. It's plants, fungus and animals that make that into soil. They all work together to digest and excrete what makes up soil. Not to mention that it's fungi that dissolve minerals to make them bioavailable to everything else. So there's lots of ways life changed the surface but I don't know about the base continents

    I had the same issue. I couldn't get it to tailor anything to a job. It either just repeated the job requirements without looking at my resume or just spat our resume reformatted. This is the only thing I want Gen-AI to do and it doesn't do it

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    120 jobs aren't that many to apply for. I applied for 99 during my last job search granted it was over a few months but still. For an AI tool it should be much more

    If we took material like rock from space and got it back to Earth enough times, would Earth grow as a planet?

    As the title says. I’m actually thinking about this hard with my friends because everything that’s produced on Earth stays on Earth so it doesn’t change size, but what if it’s not from Earth but it stays on Earth? https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/4b10eeca-d3fc-4aca-beff-8d9cb61b303a.png

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    Yes the mass will change. It's a part of some Sci Fi tropes that for highly populated planets that the same mass of people coming on just match those coming off. Or else the planet will shrink or grow

    dumples ,

    The only reason reddit was valuable was because it was from real people who weren't paid off. Well that's ruined now.

    dumples ,

    Exactly. Usually there's a conversation or a quick consensus on one or two things. But I've been seeing lots of single answers or just ads

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    Everything I can find online seems to be advertisements or paid reviews (Also advertisements) when looking for anything anymore. Businesses are terrified of an open honest conversation about what is good and what is not

    dumples ,

    Exactly. Every company is terrified of honest conversation since it makes putting out shit harder.

    Originally we went to get to watch RuPaul's Drag Race but it doesn't have the current season even though its the main attraction. Then when I saw that some Star Trek wasn't on it we canceled within a week.

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    My wife wanted to watch the Grammys and when we saw it was on Paramount Plus we got it for 1 day. Afterwards I bought a 25 dollar over the air antennae so we can watch live CBS on the local affiliate for the once per year when we want to watch live TV. Isn't worth it pretty much ever

    Don't leave it high and dry. It wants to be low and wet

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    My household makes pasta ala pomodoro once a week which is delicious and cheap. You cook whatever pasta you want al dente (still a little hard). While that's happening you cook tomatoes in a pan with salt until it's mostly sauce. Add in a ladle or two of the pasta water and cook the pasta down in the sauce. Add fresh basil at the end with pepper and cheese (we use burrata).

    It takes almost 30 minutes and it's cheap. You can use fresh romas which we usually do but canned san marzanos as well. With this as a base you can add anything you want to your sauce to change it up.

    If anyone is interested in stir frying correctly you should read The Wok which goes over the technique and recipes. The short summary is high heat and short time and make sure everything is prepared ahead of time.

    I made a quick vegetable stir dry last week with broccoli, mushrooms and beans (the only three vegetables in the fridge). The entire thing was 10 minutes on the pan from frying the mushrooms for 1 minute before adding the broccoli and beans and cooking for 30 seconds. I added salt along the way and finished with cooking wine and soy sauce for a sauce for 1 minute. Everything then sat in the wok off the heat for 5 minutes while I cleaned and plated. The vegetables were cooked but still had a snap and it was delicious. When used correctly its the perfect pan for everything

    I love fancying up basic meals like Kraft Mac and cheese. We sometimes throw in leftover cooked sausage in with it and broccoli which I blanched in the pasta water. Cook them all down in the same liquids as the package to make fancy Mac and cheese.

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    Yeah. Really anything can be added. I love using pre-made bases as the backbone of a meal. We fancy up a Rice Pilaf mix every couple of weeks by throwing in sausage (we use a lot of sausage), mushrooms and any green vegetable into the mix. The meat and mushrooms are cooked and then let simmer with the rice. The green vegetables either go in for the last few minutes if its broccoli, green beans or anything that needs a little steaming. If its baby spinach or something very delicate we just mix it just before serving. Its an easy add on, fairly healthy and delicious.

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    We open up sausage links often and break it up to get different textures. We usually cook a whole pound at a time and use half for each meal. We have been doing stuffed peppers using rice as a base filling it with tomatoes, onions, sausage or anything else we have. Its pretty much the only meat we purchase regularly.

    Don't anything nonstick. Pretty much ever. I got a nice carbon steel one for my birthday that I love. Our nonstick works okay on our electric stove but the carbon steel gives much better flavor.

    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    I love making easy upgraded Ramen especially for lunch. Dry noodles, various Asian style sauces with whatever vegetable I have on hand? Pour some boiling water over it and you got a great lunch or dinner.

    In college I lived in an old house with bad windows without AC. So to keep the house cool we had all windows open with fans blowing air facing outside. You can also do half the house outside and half blowing inside to get a fake cross breathe

    To be honest the best use case for Gen-AI is people using Gen AI to generate professional messages from simple sentences and the recipient to use Gen-AI to translate it back. I can't wait for all my interactions to be made for me. It's going to be terrible

    I tried to get LLMs to write a cover letter for me. It could either lie about my credentials to match the job or write a generic one about my credentials. They are so dumb. This should be useful for us workers but won't get better since it doesn't help businesses.

    I think millennials and zoomer are just being open and honest about things that always happened. We love labels and with the Internet talks with other like-minded people. There have always been people who worked 9 to 5 at a job and prioritized stability over money. We are being open and bragging about it. We just want to break the hustle culture that was always a loud subset

    For example my dad a peak boomer worked at the same company for his whole career and turned down "promotions" that gave a manager title with little more money. They have always been there

    dumples ,
    @dumples@kbin.social avatar

    I know. But that was the equivalent of jumping every few years to a similar but slightly paying more role. Not grinding to get the biggest promotion and title as possible.
