People do sometimes get electrocuted in fresh water, but only when a boat in a marina has shore power (120V) and a bad connection of the hot side into the water. This can only occur with shore power, because otherwise the circuit can’t leave to boat. It also doesn’t occur in salt water because salt conducts electricity better than the human body.

An EV battery might have enough voltage, but the current would prefer to travel directly from - to + on the battery itself. You would have to literally get in the way of that for it to affect your body. Most situations where that could happen, such as touching the electrodes directly, would be almost as dangerous even when you are dry. And again, salt water would conduct it much better than your body, therefore bypassing you, as long as you don’t get in the way.

Is it more energy efficient to charge a phone/tablet using a desktop/laptop while your computer is being used vs using the charger? (kbin.run)

I was just thinking if you are on your computer anyway would it just use some of the excess electricity that your computer would have wasted or would it be worse than charging your phone from a charger while using your laptop separately.

USB PD (Power Delivery) actually does use a higher voltage for more wattage. Standard USB is limited to 5V at 0.5A and sometimes up to 5V @ 2A on quick chargers. But PD chargers can give 20V and 3A for 60w or even 5A (100w) with properly rated cables. There’s even a proposal for up to 48V at 5A to get 240w. This is all determined by a negotiation between the charger, the cable (which does have a small chip for this purpose), and the device, therefore PD chargers must support multiple voltages.

There are websites used by many of the smaller landlords which “suggests” a price for each unit. The landlord stops thinking about a price on their own, takes the website suggestion, and that’s a type of price collusion. And there are large investors which own thousands of units in many buildings who apply the same price formula across them all. Both tend to greatly reduce the leverage a renter can have by shopping around multiple offers.

Sounds like sleep. Hibernate is when it turns completely off, such that you can leave it unplugged for a weekend and still have battery when it pops you back into your session. It takes longer to save and restore the session than sleep does.

It does still increase the cost of automating usage of those sites, which puts an upper limit to how they can be abused. We probably won’t be able to go back to no Captcha without seeing a large increase of spam, spoofing, scalping, and scraping. They would have to give up offering most kinds of free trials and other consumer friendly practices if the bots can just make new accounts at 1000 per second.

The Rockies stand in the way, and the energy cost of pushing water over them likely exceeds the going price of water. We do have lots of water pipes west of the Rockies, but no way to economically get water from the Mississippi.

Also, oil is worth a lot more per gallon than water, and used in smaller quantities, which is why oil pipes are economical.

I expect desalination to become mainstream before we push much water across the Rockies.

But Recall is recording screenshots, not data stored on disk. That’s not the same as Apple’s hourly data snapshot which is just a automated backup of what you have already stored. Recall will be recording the videos or images you watch, even when you don’t keep them locally. It will store the things you decided not to save, and every time you have to open your password manager to check a password, or create a new one. It might be limited to your account, but that still means it’s accessible to anyone who can figure out your password or access your unlocked PC behind your back. Or to that virus you accidentally downloaded, if it’s not immediately detected.

I agree it’s not great for public discourse, but you are subject to the whims of the third party’s TOS. You can still publish it, but have to make your own site or pick a third party that won’t sell you out.

Or you just accept that the third party is going to do what it’s going to do. Post your discourse, but don’t expect it to be protected.

I agree, that’s how it should work. GitHub as a third party probably had better TOS than most, and would face more uproar if they changed it. But they are not a social media site.

But for regular social media posting, Facebook, Twitter, etc, there is no fighting against their TOS other than abstinence. You can object in writing with one of those footers, but nobody in charge is going to read it or honor it. It will be shoveled into the AI along with everything else. Your only recourse will be an expensive legal fight, and it would be difficult to prove any particular post was in the AI or not. It’s unproven legal ground to say giving a post to an AI for training even qualifies as a “copy” under copyright, or what notification qualifies to exempt your content.

Some of that may not be subjective, even if it is a personal difference. Some need glasses, some don’t get glasses because they just barely need them, and others have problems glasses can’t fix, especially as we age. Some eyes are just different, and that’s physical differences, not just a difference of preference.

I do a lot of code. That means I often deal with three or four programs at the same time, and perhaps 10 loaded throughout the day and I want to see them all. So I have two monitors that are each 27" and 4k.

This means I can see a web browser sized to a full 1080 size, next to a database query, and still see the code that I’m working on, and keep an eye on any new emails or text chats. Without needing to Alt-tab to switch windows. It’s like spreading your work over a dining room table, instead of those little desks you got in high school.

Most apps don’t need to be larger than 1080. But some can be taller to see more code (maybe 160 lines, for example) without scrolling too much. And I hardly ever deal with just one window at a time.

Nearly all such satellites would have highly directional antennas, so the aliens would have to be neat earth before they could do that. Voyager is not expecting a command signal from anywhere else but Earth. The signal would have to originate not more than a fraction of a degree from Earth from Voyager’s perspective.

They are cancelling flights because those specific airports don’t have the equipment to provide a precision landing (ILS) during low visibility weather. They only published a landing procedure with GPS. They will now spend a few months installing the ILS system to enable such landings so they can resume commercial flights.

Before GPS, all airports would be either VFR only or would have an ILS system installed. Since then, some airports were built without an expensive ILS but used a published GPS approach to allow low-vis landings.

They could have continued flights with only VFR navigation, but that would seriously restrict the weather they could operate in.

And now here in California, they are starting “Transitional Kindergarten” or TK for the 4 year olds, before they go to Kindergarten at five. (More focus on reading and writing than a typical Preschool.) TK is offered at the normal public schools, and at most private schools that have K and up.

The problem is “unsafe websites” is actually a very broad category. Even popular, reputable websites have accidentally hosted malware in the advertisements, some of which can infect without a click.

If enough people are using this new system, Russia could easily pivot to target it as well. Jamming is not inherently hard, especially if a nation is attempting it.

Jamming in the US will bring the FCC down your throat. The stronger the signal, the faster they will show up. Russia transmitting a jamming signal from Russia doesn’t have to worry about such things. A jamming device is not hard to find, but on sovereign soil it’s still untouchable short of war.

There’s no such thing as needing to disconnect while charging, unless you literally leave the battery behind somewhere. If you have two batteries on board, then you can use them in parallel.
