California's 'click to cancel' subscription bill is signed into law (www.engadget.com)

Governor Gavin Newsom has signed California’s “click to cancel” Assembly Bill 286 into law to make it easier for consumers to opt out of subscriptions. The bill, introduced in April 2024, forces companies that permit online or in-app sign-ups to allow for online or in-app unsubscribing as well....

The reason you see all the pop ups for cookies nowadays is because of GDPR, a European law. It absolutely does work like this. It’s vastly cheaper to run one system then 2 systems. It’s the same reason California emissions laws become defacto laws for the rest of the country.

Cards Against Humanity sues SpaceX, alleges “invasion” of land on US/Mexico border (arstechnica.com)

Cards Against Humanity sued SpaceX yesterday, alleging that Elon Musk’s firm illegally took over a plot of land on the US/Mexico border that the party-game company bought in 2017 in an attempt to stymie then-President Trump’s attempt to build a wall....

fishos , (edited )
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know why people are downvoting you. At the very least, it seems like they didn’t even check on the land for years. Notice it’s a 2017 photo and a 2024 one. No progress pics in the middle, no “we told them to stop on X and Y date and here’s photos of them continuing”.

They abandoned the property for years because all they cared about was squatting on the wall being built, which by having the deed they were doing. They didn’t do anything further because that was never their goal.

So honestly, while what Elon did is shitty and illegal, them trying to claim the some moral high ground by acting like it was an environmental sanctuary is disingenuous. In fairness, the original purpose of stopping the wall from being built is STILL being upheld. Elon’s not building the wall there as far as I can tell. Just storing junk(that CAD should just scrap and sell since it’s abandoned on their lot). Heavy machinery is worth a lot…

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Did I say it wasn’t illegal? I literally said it is.

What I’m saying is CAD is pretending they were protecting the environment when in fact all they were doing was squatting a land title. They didn’t actually check on the land at all, which is something you might expect of someone who was actually trying to protect the land and wasn’t just pulling a big publicity stunt.

So yeah, what I’m saying is the other guy is right: theyre making a big show of saying they care about the land after the fact, but before then did jackcall shit and never even checked on it.

Elon can be a shithead and CAD could have just been doing a publicity stunt. Both can be true

I never had a problem with the new, though admittedly goofy, design until I saw this picture. The ground clearance on that looks pretty low. Might just be photo angles tho. Anyone have any videos of these being tested out? Curious how they handle on dirt roads. I’m sure the did factor that into account, just curious is all.

Are people really arguing with you and not realizing you already ruled in their favor?

Pick your battles people. You don’t bite the hand that’s feeding you and all that…

fishos , (edited )
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

What’s the point? If you’re gonna alter the OG equipment to such an extreme extent like removing the CD drive, then you’re not going to play original copies on it anyways. Might as well just run an emulator.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

But if you’re buying a retro console just to emulate half the games, why not emulate the whole thing and just buy a modern USB version of the controller?

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

But it’s not the original thing. It’s missing a core feature. So it is emulation.

fishos , (edited )
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. The ONLY point of these consoles is to play physical copies of games you still own. Otherwise just buy a mini PC and USB controllers that match the originals and call it a day. Going halfway like this makes it useless to both niches.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a lot of fancy words to say “so you can emulate your games”. Which is our point: if you can’t play your OG games and are gonna be emulating those anyways, no one gives a shit if it has an OG chip anymore. We’re gonna have to emulate anyways, any might as well do it with better shaders, graphics, control, etc than on this custom built, one use only, emulator.

@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Funko pops were also very popular. Everdrives are overpriced junk.

Hmmm, it’s almost like the study was testing peoples perception of the usefulness of AI vs the actual usefulness and results that came out.

@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

That’s why I think the final iteration of the fediverse will be a mostly defederated bunch of echochamber bubbles. People don’t actually want diverse opinions. They want a diverse group of people to share their opinion so that they can feel theirs is the dominant, right one. Give it 5 years and the fediverse will be just as much walled off and divided as the rest of the internet is now.

People like to complain about the evil’s of humanity and yet always seem to act like it’s forced upon us by some outside force. Like the 1% are a different species and not just glowing examples of our worst traits cranked up to max. Like someone else is making humanity act this way. But nah, it’s just us and our nature. And until we understand and address that properly, none of our problems are going anywhere.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Things like Spotify or your phone/earbuds themselves usually have a mono setting. I use it all the time when only wearing one earbud. Beatles songs are notorious for splitting vocals to one ear only.

The solution is already right there. But let me guess, “No, I want to use my old wired earbuds from 1995 and they should accommodate me in my archaic niche use case instead of me upgrading my earbuds to enjoy the new features developed like forced mono”?

Student dorm does not allow wifi routers

I just moved into a student dorm for a semester abroad, and beforehand I emailed them asking whether they had ethernet ports to plug my router into (I use it to connect all my devices, and for WiVRn VR streaming). They confirmed that I could, but now that I’m here the wifi login portal is asking me to accept these terms from...

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Users are often dumb. Imagine 100 people who think they know what they’re doing trying to set up a bunch of custom networking.

That’s your dorm.

Most dorms either outright prohibit using personal hardware like that or require the schools IT department to install it themselves and set it up.

Run a network of your own someday and you’ll understand. It’s hard enough to get your own network working perfectly without a bunch of wildcards popping up everywhere.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

If everything is set up perfectly, it should work, sure. Now how many people do you think even know the difference between WAN and LAN? You expecting the bio or art major to not make any mistakes at all? Or the business major?

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Lmao you are oblivious if you think it’s possible to set up a network that someone CANT fuck up while having physical access to it.

It’s not magic.

The point is NETWORKS ARE COMPLICATED. Users are generally dumb. The point is you don’t expect them to have the knowledge to do it right. So they’ll break something. Users with actual knowledge could yes, break things even worse.

That’s EXACTLY why they’re restricting hardware use.

Welcome to the conversation, smh

Bots are running rampant. How do we stop them from ruining Lemmy?

It’s public. Anyone can. Jesus you people always try to spin this into some conspiracy

This was debunked LONG ago - that’s NOT a chat gpt output. It’s nonsense that LOOKS like ChatGPT output.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

It is fake. This is weeks/months old and was immediately debunked. That’s not what a ChatGPT output looks like at all. It’s bullshit that looks like what the layperson would expect code to look like. This post itself is literally propaganda on its own.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. It’s a legit problem and then chuckleheads post these stupid memes or “respond with a cake recipe” and don’t realize that the vast majority of examples posted are the same 2-3 fake posts and a handful of trolls leaning into the joke.

Makes talking about the actual issue much more difficult.

@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

“what property is altered”

Ummm, the part where you are a continuous object that is suddenly disassembled.

Dont be intentionally obtuse. Yes, this is a ship of thesis type problem, but there’s a very clear point when you stop being “you” - when you’re a stream of atoms. Although many versions of a teleporter don’t transmit the atoms, only the data of how they’re arranged. In that case, you are very distinctly a photocopy, as no original atoms remain.

In the case of atom transfer, you stop being you during the time you are a bundle of atoms with no consciousness. Some people believe we’re like a forever stew and if you shut it down like that and reboot it, it’s not the “same” stew anymore because it wasn’t just the emergence of the consciousness, but the specific emergence itself. Essentially You v1 died in its sleep and You v2 seamlessly took it’s place without knowing. Tho that line of thought could applied to sleeping and loss of consciousness during surgery.

All of this is to say it’s not a cut and dry answer and people claiming there’s a diffinitive, clear cut answer are incorrect. It’s a complex question that touches on the very nature of our existence and is still hotly debated. Even academics who believe we are purely chemical machines debate exactly how that works.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Ok, so what is the exact process that creates consciousness? Cus that’s what I’m saying is debated but you apparently have that answer. So what EXACTLY, down to the atomic level, is consciousness? What processes and how do they emerge into consciousness?

I’ll be waiting for your exact, undebated answer.

Earth wouldn’t coalesce without the sun. Thus no geothermal.

Nuclear materials were formed in supernovas. Can’t have that without a star.

Moons tides wouldn’t exist if Earth didn’t have an orbit of its own. Again, sun needed.

Hydro you already figured out.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Earth wouldn’t have coalesced without the sun in the middle. Otherwise we’d still be a gas blob.

Nuclear materials were formed in supernovas. They wouldn’t exist in the first place without a star.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Which wouldn’t have the potential if the larger sun didn’t form first to create the gravity to allow the rest to form.

Star != Sun is just pointlessly pedantic. You’re not trying to learn anything, just be a smartass.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

youtu.be/N1pIYI5JQLE?si=uciOf3JzwF8S6qDy

Y’all need to pay attention to the actual question being asked. Geothermal, nuclear, tidal are all originating with the formation of the galaxy and the formation of stars.

Ask yourself: WHERE did the earth get X,Y,Z? Where does nuclear materials come from: supernovas. How do planets form? A gas cloud coalesces, the star forms, and the remaining gasses coalesce in that gravity well formed by the star. Without a star forming in the middle, you get no solar system. You get cold blob of gas or a cold dead rock. Where does tidal come from: same gravitational interactions that require a sun sized object - tides aren’t 100% earth & moon.

Stars are like the seed needed to form crystals. Without them, nothing else forms. Just a bunch of basic chemicals floating around.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Well, seeing as how the question is directly asking “is there any energy you can’t eventually trace back to the sun”, you shouldn’t ever stop going back unless you can reach a definitively non sun answer

(Gravity arguably works - probably the nuclear attraction force as well, electromagnetic I believe)

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

OP is inadvertantly providing another example: the phrase “conspiracy theory”. It was coined by the US government as a way to discredit ideas - to make people look like crackpots. Lots of negative propaganda was created around that phrase.

Fast forward to today and “conspiracy theory”, though admittedly still tainted in various ways, has made a resurgence. Things that would have gotten you laughed out of the room are now proven fact(like Iran-Contra, for a simple and fairly uncontroversial example).

@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

All the downvotes but literally every post here I see is on Reddit hours or days beforehand.

fishos ,

A) literally means figuratively. Go grab a dictionary and check yourself.

B) Was I complaining about Reddit? If anything, I’m complaining about the fact that Lemmy is much smaller and often delayed in getting me news about current events

As just a simple contrarian? No. But is he a contrarian? Absolutely.

Someone seriously patented purge towers? Ffs, first hearing that 3D printers were shelved for decades because some douchy company camped on the main patent, and now shit like this? Patenting “printing a square tower to accommodate the waste created during filament swaps” is fucking ridiculous. I can’t stand patents anymore. Corporate extortion through and through.

Fuck Stratasys.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Or on a Bambu, just do a longer “poop” purge and spit it out the side like they already do. A tower isn’t even necessary. It’s only needed on devices without a purge capability. I’ve printed plenty of multicolored prints without any tower whatsoever on mine. Literally should be suing anyone but Bambu for that one.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

For awhile I still believed there was a use for creators themselves. It’s basically the only way for an individual to sue a company for stealing their idea. But of course it gets captured by corporations and ruined. But until patents get some serious limits, yeah I’m out. They’re more harm than good, I agree. I just felt the good they were doing still had some merit…

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

That would be a fun swap for the purge code lmao. Free “Fuck Stratasys” keychain with every print. Better than the squiggly “poop” blobs I get now…

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

I could see the logic in that(not sure if it’s true lol). Like, extreme heat to have a cconstant and complex mix of chemical interactions occuring, but then once they’ve formed something, cooler temps help focus long term stability. No idea if that works or not or just sounds good tho.

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

You can literally say the exact same thing with Windows. That’s how you Linux peeps feel, constantly yelling “why are you using windows! Stop having fun!”

Is windows perfect? Nah. But does it work most the time? Yeah. All the bitching about windows being shit and yet my 300+ installed games all work… Crazy…

How about just let people use what they like and shut up with the damn “my OS is better than yours” nonsense?

It’s posts like this, that even though I’ve used Linux in the past, make me immediately think “nah, fuck that, I’ll stick to windows. I don’t want to deal with those people.”

You’re more of a harm than help.

@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

That’s what happens when states get to regulate these kinds of things. Notice it’s mostly progressive states that this applies to. States that put laws on their books against this. The reason it doesn’t count in those other states is because, for all intents and purposes, it was legal there.

People complain about California a lot, but this is what all of our “stupid useless laws” are for.

What is the secret to making LED light bulbs last as long as the package says?

These bulbs are not economical at all because I have to constantly replace them. Saving on electricity does not justify these expensive bulbs burning out in less than a year. The only two that have lasted are in my range hood for light above my stove. Those experience extreme heat and yet they are fine. I have had to replace 2...

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a wiring issue. Bulbs burning out shockingly fast means something else is wrong. Had the same issue in a ceiling light until we replaced the wiring.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, accused as the main plotter of 9/11 attacks, agrees to plead guilty (apnews.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, accused as the mastermind of al-Qaida’s Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, has agreed to plead guilty, the Defense Department said Wednesday. Convenient that’s it’s occuring right before the anniversary as well.

I like how the AP story says he’s “accused” and “has agreed to plea”. Pretty passive wording instead of “person who committed”, etc. I don’t think they fully believe it either.

@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

And how often do we see loaded language regardless. I’m praising them for being neutral when often times the media isn’t. Especially with a topic like 9/11

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

If this gains any traction, I hope every news site, blog, etc sues Reddit for profiting off their material that fills the entire site. The comment section wouldn’t exist if there wasn’t something to comment on in the first place. Digg and Reddit didn’t even have comments at first. It was ALL content from other sources. Even “reddit original content” is" original content from a creator posted to Reddit". Reddits “value” is ephemeral.

It’s more that a CD is just a physical copy of a digital file. Buying a CD and buying a mp3 file are basically the same. People buy records because they have this idea that “analog sounds better”(despite modern record players being digital as well - it’s the tubes, not just the record, that made it analog)

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

.FLAC would like a word with you. I was only using mp3 as a stand in for “digital file”. There are much better file formats than what you find on a CD.

Because it is. The customer isn’t paying for the hardware, electricity, or bandwidth. Dude above is a nonce.
