Nobody says they were masterpieces. But they were entertaining - and excellent at it as far as cheap entertainment goes -, now they’re just sad to watch. I followed it closely until No Way Home, that was my closing point. From now on, I’ll only watch Spider-Man movies because I’m a huge fan of the character. Couldn’t care less about the multiverse they’re selling
That and No Way Home were going to be the last I was going to watch, and I’m still trying to work up the energy (?) to watch the latter. I will, eventually, I guess, but with the Spiderverse movies being A Thing, it feels pointless.
Oh they do be selling it that’s for sure. I haven’t checked in to Spider Man since Enter the Spiderverse, which I thought was really cool. Marvel I didn’t even like the style of the first movies, but I felt obligated to see them since I was technically part of what is now “nerd culture,” and I think a lot of us felt the same obligation to see them for nerd cred. Now they’ve just commodified it to shit and milking every drop they can out of it.
Marvel films are the popcorn flicks of the 2010s. None of them are masterpieces, but most are just a fun watch.
But now they’re often not even that. Besides a few outliers (No Way Home, GOTG3), they fail to even be entertaining popcorn flicks. I’d say the line is National Treasure. If it’s better than National Treasure, that’s a solid popcorn flick. If it’s worse, then it’s not worth watching.
It’s certainly no The Mummy (Brendan and Rachel obviously, not Tom’s shitty effort that killed the whole “Dark Universe” franchise two movies in), which is about where I draw the line on popcorn guff.
Guardians had the things I hate about MCU but was entertaining enough to be enjoyable, because they leaned in to how wacky it was I think. Rest of MCU was just done to a crisp even then.
Yeah I’d say they were pretty bad and then got worse. They were agreeable movies for a diverse group at one point, even if they weren’t all Marvel-heads. The Joss Whedon style of quippy self-referencing dialogue and unlikable protagonists is their major weak point, it got old between Firefly getting cancelled and the first Marvel movie but hadn’t been overdone in pop culture yet apparently.
An MCU sex scene:
“That was so hot how you did that thing 3 scenes ago …I guess we’re alone now”
“Yeah… this is the part in a movie where sex happens…”
“I suppose if sex were going to happen, we would start like this…”
is it still worth getting into? it seems like something I’d like but I’ve never played it before and don’t have crazy amounts of time like I used to. should I still give it a go?
I played for a while and it’s fun. Definitely worth the price, and IMO it’s an easy game to drop for a while and come back to a month later. Helps prevent burning out. If you’re the kind of player that needs to 100% everything in a week or two you might find it grueling; there’s a ton of progression to do.
It’s nice that you can just go on a single mission and it only takes ~1/2 hour, so there’s hundreds (thousands?) Of hours of content, but it’s all broken into small enough chunks that most people could probably fit it into their schedule.
Absolutely! I think you can have fun with it, no matter how much time you invest. It feels like the main focus of the game is just the player to have fun.
Then the years go on, the kid becomes an adult and begins cooking for themselves. The first meal they make for someone else they realize (1) how difficult it is to estimate when a meal will be done (2) how much work goes into cooking, especially for a whole family and (3) how hurtful and disruptive it is when the person you’re cooking for decides they’d rather eat your food when it’s cold and gross and everyone else has already finished eating and are trying to clean up. And that’s not even incorporating the social elements of family dinner time the kid is eschewing. I didn’t understand as a kid why my parents were so adamant about family dinner, but as an adult it’s something I’m really glad they enforced.
Exactly! When you’re a teenager it’s hard to appreciate these things. I know I definitely took it for granted but I at least respected my family enough to not start an online game around dinner time.
I disagree with (1), especially for parents that cook the same 10-20 meals over and over. Even if the time it takes to cook a certain meal on your kitchen is different than the one stated at the recipe, you can note it down and get a reliable average after 5 tries.
It’s annoying that some parents can’t even do that to minimize the fights around dinner time and shift all the blame to the kids.
Yeah well there’s cooking as in purely functional preparation of nutrients, and then there’s cooking as in a process of caring for others by creating a worthwhile experience of food that is needed, engaging, and delicious. The downside is this experience usually has a time limit dependent on time and others’ availability (eating hot food together). It’s sad for such effort to go to waste. The alternative extreme to this kind of nurturing is abandoning the idea that family time over meals is worthwhile and just shitting out nutrient bricks so the children don’t starve. I don’t think anyone really wins in the long run with that.
You’re right, but also remember to say it out loud.
Communication is so underrated but I guarantee most people would listen and be willing to accommodate you more if you just bring it up casually, instead of waiting until they discover it for themselves or until you blow up from being frustrated and underappreciated
I didn’t say they weren’t. I just reject the notion that proper definitions aren’t gatekeeping. I’m not joining the above argument. I understand the definition is based on usage and the usage has changed. Most humans are morons and don’t know how to use words properly so they let language change over time.
But who decides what the proper definition is? Your proper definition is for me a narrow if it doesn’t take into account the common usage. The definition of meme is widening. Cope with it.
I’m perfectly happy to give orthographic dominion to Webster. They can be our Academie Francaise. They can control the definition drift. And the pedants can use their educational privilege to suppress the poors. As it should be.
This is kind of sad, it’s hard for people to make friends in the workplace, but for some of them that’s the only place they can even try to do it. So be friendly with others…
the whole idea of the meme and the initial joke in the series is exactly that there’s no nice way of setting this boundary, so Jerry just becomes blunt about it and accepting that it makes him look like an ass. that is the joke
I am friendly but there’s no spots open in my spare time, so I end up coming off like a hypocrite. work - super friendly, off work - sorry, but nope.
and it’s jarring but 3 main friends is already hard to do especially since my family is super super fragmented, I’m an introvert and like slow living too. Just 2 visits a week spread equally to mom, dad (separated), 3 friends, granny, aunt. maths says we’ll only meet once a month already. no mate, I think you’re great but diluting my visits any further will make me super absent, and visiting more often makes me tired and absent in an even worse way.
It’s not your fault, I’ve had the good fortune of meeting good friends in life and made the effort to keep them around and the friendships have aged well. that and I was cursed with a dramatic family where nobody gets along. so yea, I know it sounds terribly douchy but it’s neither of us, there’s just no more vacancies.
I’m not gonna tell you all this when we get along at work, because it comes off as aggressive or belittling but what am I supposed to do/say?
I wonder if there’s an overlap between those that relate to this meme and all those complaining how hard it is to make friends as an adult.
I usually make friends at work or am friendly with my coworkers. I understand not wanting to be friendly with annoying or bossy people. However, it doesn’t hurt to have a beer every now and again. I keep HR at arm’s length though …
Tbh I’m one of the guys trying to carry as many chairs as I can. That’s because I want stuff to be done as fast as possible. So more chairs per run = less time spent doing chores 🤷♀️
Calling someone belligerent is general done as an insult. So yes in typical Wiki fashion they are technically using the word correctly. But if read with connotation then it reads more like “here’s the list of assholes.”
I think you misunderstand. The way Wikipedia uses the word is the original usage, so only funny if you don’t know about it. Applying it to bar fights and such is the tongue-in-cheek usage.
From Latin belligerans (“waging war”), present active participle of belligerō (“I wage war”), from belliger (“waging war, warlike”), from bellum (“war”) + -ger (from gerō (“I lead, wage, carry on”)).
But thank you for googling something I already looked up before posting my original comment. I genuinely don’t understand why people on this platform think they have authority on how language can be used and interpreted. It’s exhausting
Not every conflict is between nations and the infobox has to work across different conflicts. Belligerents is probably the best option to label the sides of a conflict
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict[f] is an ethnic and territorial conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, inhabited mostly by ethnic Armenians until 2023, and seven surrounding districts, inhabited mostly by Azerbaijanis until their expulsion during the 1990s. The Nagorno-Karabakh region has been entirely claimed by and partially controlled by the breakaway Republic of Artsakh, but is recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan gradually re-established control over Nagorno-Karabakh region and the seven surrounding districts since 2020.
Twelve Azerbaijani civilians and two soldiers were killed in 2021, by landmine explosions. Seventeen Armenian and ten Azerbaijani soldiers were also killed in shoot-outs in the border area, while 38 Armenian soldiers were captured. Twenty-eight of the captured Armenian soldiers were subsequently released.
In 2022, three Armenian soldiers were killed and 14 wounded in an attack by Azerbaijani drones in Nagorno-Karabakh on 25 March.
The fatalities of the current war, is how i imagined wars when i was younger. Soldiers in combat with other soldiers. Civilian casualties “only” through landmines.
No raiding, raping, torturing & murdering of civilians as a sport of some sort
Not quite the same, but if you want to replace ghee with something vegan, try avocado or coconut oil. There is veghan ghee but it’s bad for you the same way old timey margerine is bad.
My workplace just went back to masking because it’s already kicking off to be a banger of a respiratory illness season. I’ll use whatever I can to remind people it’s not just about your comfort.
Be sure to get the new booster. I delayed getting it by a week and tested positive Saturday morning. Sinus + Upper Respiratory infection has been a fun thing to experience lmao.
Worst part so far was last night when I couldn’t tell I was eating expired kimchi until I took a closer look. Lack of smell or taste can be tricky lol.
I can’t get another booster until November because of the timing of my last shot but definitely will. Getting my flu shot tomorrow though. The amount of plain old non-COVID respiratory illness in the hospitals around here is absolutely wild, like just plain old pneumonia.
Definitely need to get my flu shot too so thanks for that reminder. When I test negative again I will try and get both.
Also just learned if I try blowing through my right nostril hard enough, I can blow air out of my left eye sinus passage. Covid has been a gift that keeps on giving.
I hope you feel better soon! I had the mildest possible case of COVID thankfully thanks to five vaccines. It’s worth all the sore arms, because even boosted people are getting bad cases of it!
Thanks! I’m doing better since Saturday for sure. Only really have a sinus infection still but two more days of antibiotics will clear everything up for sure.
Definitely would take another sore arm over a week of this.
I am fully vaxed (booster not available here yet) and had COVID before. Just got it again recently and it really got me good. Still dealing with respiratory problems two weeks later.
I was going to get the booster last weekend but tested positive Friday. D: seems to be a fairly mild case, just an extremely terrible sore throat, and I’m doing Paxlovid - I’d call the taste similar to orange juice + toothpaste.
I’m so glad my last two jobs have been fully remote. I can’t imagine working in an office again and I’m grateful I don’t have to. Most of my friends are still working remotely too which is kinda cool.
You jest, but I suffer from depression and I could not drive while having a bad episode even if I wanted to. You cannot think straight if things in your head go south and you’re too pre-occupied to even make it around the block.
That’s fair. I unfortunately know people who just bottle all of their suffering and they’re just slowly fuming so they’re always angry. And being angry on the road is very dangerous for the people around them.
See, I’m the opposite. I suffer from depression and riding/driving really helps with that.
Only I don’t get all that angry when I do. If someone annoys me, I just go for a simple under-my-breath “you twat”.
The bike works best for it. The big vroom helps quieten the sadness. Kinda hard to be sad when you’re sat on top of an explosive fuel and thousands of explosings happening between your legs. It’s kinda calming. To me, at least.
Before anyone asks, no I haven’t fucked my exhaust. It’s still the stock one.
What scares me the most is not the two-tons, it’s the twenty-tons. There’s something primally scary about a small house on wheels cutting you off in the left lane trying to pass another house on wheels, fully boxing you in between two metals walls while a pickup trying to go 30 over the limit gets all up in your 6.
