Well if you smoke two packs a day since you’re eight and everything you touch, eat and breathe contains lead, asbestos or both – that might age you a little.
I have an aunt who has always looked about 15 years older than both of my parents, despite being my dad’s younger sister. Smoking, drinking, and tanning will age you quick.
Generational wealth gap is an undisputed economic reality, especially when comparing any generation to boomers. Boomers have acquired more wealth by ever age benchmark than any generation to ever exist.
And pensions were very common decades ago. Now they’re mostly gone:
Assuming every member of the 1% in the US is a baby boomer, the value of the real estate they own accounts for about 1/3rd of the total real estate wealth owned by boomers.
I fully expect a lot of the younger generations to say “fuck it” and just live in poverty instead.
I’m already seeing this attitude in my adult son and his friends and it’s getting increasing hard to motivate him when he sees no light at the end of the tunnel to work for.
You joke, but the gay/trans conversion “therapy” industry, which people like these no doubt support, is rife with cases of sexual abuse against children and teens. The stories from victims are honestly nauseating.
You know those horror stories about kids being tricked or kidnapped and put in some twisted social experiment? That actually happened. Normally I’d say fuck the rich but in this case it would be in more than just bad taste; in the southern states there was a “school” where rich families were “sending” their kids to. Why? Some were spoiled brats that were making their family name look bad to their rich parents’ rich friends, others were “too soft” and the bastard and bitch who raised them wanted to “toughen them up”.
The place was straight out of something like those edgy novels that teenagers read but, well, real. There was emotional and social manipulation up to and including gas lighting, they drugged the kids to keep them from escaping, and yes, there was rape. If the place had been discovered recently rather than being shut down years ago, I would be demanding some level of legal autonomy for children because it’s gotten to the point where kids can’t trust anyone to protect them from forced confinement and cruelty.
I would know, I was illegally taken from my family at age 10 by government officials and it took my parents two years of fighting in court to get me back. There’s a difference between grounding a kid or preventing them from going to a cherished event because they screwed up, and being cruel because you can get away with it or being homophobic towards someone who depends on you for survival.
I suspect it’s the implication you were doing illegal things to survive. And they don’t want to be listed as your employer if those things catch up with you later.
Also, if you can say you were living on savings you’d be fine, I assume.
If you tell a job you have savings, they’re going to think you’ll just leave the job whenever you want. They don’t want that. They want dependable workers, as in, the workers depend on the job to live.
I did that for nearly a year in my mid 20’s after getting off a 5 year job that managed to save me a whopping $3k… So I squatted on my cheap ass house with a roomie and just got drunk, played games, and got really into reddit.
Was it worth it then? Yeah, was it worth it now? Eh. Passive income would’ve been nice but eh. I did enjoy my time. And I found I could 100% be one of those people that never worked a day in their life and would have no issue.
Wait… does anyone (Except those who paint eyebrows) actually think painted eyebrows look good? I’ve never met anyone who thinks it looks good on women.
No. I do not walk up to random people and ask them personal questions out of nowhere. I just always assume that if they didn’t think it looked good, they wouldn’t do it.
I think there are certain people who can do certain looks that look good with painted eyebrows, as long as it’s very high quality. I don’t see it often.
“Good lord! It’s eighty degrees outside! Twenty degrees more and water is boiling! and you’re messing with your pant legs, what the fuck is wrong with you?”
I know it clearly works, and old people do definitely fall for it, but I’ll never understand how. What part of the script makes it sound reasonable that the IRS would want amazon gift cards instead of, you know, a cash transfer or something?
They make it sound like they are only notifying you that you are about to be arrested. They don’t ask for payment and fake refuse the first offer if the mark offers. Then, when the madk is very worried they are about to go to jail, it is much easier for them to believe whatever because it’s harder to think when you are panicking. So something like “our payment system is down so we cant take payment with cards right now. You need to pay within 30 minutes or I can’t reverse it. I guess I can pay out of pocket, but you need to get me the equal amount of gift cards” or some shit like that.
Worked in a call center once connecting terminally Ill old people to nurses (a specialized aska nurse line essentially).
My job was just to call people who needed a call back and then hand them off to a nurse when they answered the phone. I’m talking like 15 seconds of phone time with these people on average.
The shit I heard in those 15 seconds was wild.
“Can’t talk, I’m on the other line with Jesus” was one of my favorite dark replies from a person with essentially terminal COPD.
But there were plenty of “I lived a bad life, I know why this is happening to me” type digressions.
Jeez! Thats really something. I would still assume they just didn’t go to church enough and thought this was their reckoning or so. In any case, you have guts my friend. That would have ruined my mental health.
I used to hang out with hippies and artists and the age range is quite large there. There was this dude in his 70s who would casually talk about the time he helped get rid of a body after a murder acquaintances of his did in the 60s or 70s or something. He was actually put on trial and got convicted in the 80s when one the people who did the actual murder couldn’t live with the guilt and confessed but managed to get it overturned when he appealed and got acquitted, in part because they never found the body because like 5 years after they disposed of it they put a new highway right over it. Old people are fucking wild lol
along with other replies generally you become more gullible/less able to think of alternative explanations as you age, so even some “obvious” scams look legit
Many real scams are not this obvious, plus a lot of old people are senile to some degree, which these scammers are exploiting. My grandma was contacted by “her bank” about verifying her identity, and after a few minutes of establishing a backstory they asked her for her debit card info including CVV. It all sounded very legit, and they even “transferred her to another department” with hold music and everything. Luckily, she didn’t fall for it.
It’s the amount of money that makes it worth it. If they are successfull the amount is usually something like $10,000-$30,000. If they are only successful once every 2000 calls thats still worth it. Now you would say 2000 calls with 50 people in a call center means they are only successful once every few days and you are totally correct. But you have to put this into consideration with what they are usually paid. If you work in IT for huge companies like Accenture or McKinsey you will earn around 8-10k if you are in upper management and 6-8k if you are a normal worker. That’s yearly. So every successful scam for these scam companies pays up to 5 peoples yearly salary
Except if your parents never end up divorcing and you just having to live with their bickering and one parent undermining the other with gaslighting. Fun times…
Except when neither of the divorced parents has any money, and you get zero birthdays and zero Xmas, but a whole lot of yelling from both sides about how lucky you are and how “I don’t need to get you anything, that bitch/asshole of a mother/father will get something for you.”
It’s what my wife went through. But she is doing a great job as a mom and a wife because she made up her mind to be different than her parents. She also went from a size 20 to a size 8 over the past several years of constant effort but that’s another story.
For educational purposes, go watch Fox News for an hour (WARNING: more than 90 minutes can cause brain damage). I absolutely guarantee you will hear the same phrase, with the same wording, 20-200 times (sometimes they are more emphatic depending on the subject) within that hour. If you repeat it enough times, some people will take it as hard fact.
