nix flake update && sudo nixod-rebuild switch

I wish all representation was done as well as when it was done out of creative choice rather than trying to win progressiveness points

It only feels shoe horned when they don’t write the character well.

There are a lot of cases where the person isn’t allowed to have any flaws or character development because they’re too scared to make them look bad in any way, which also means none of their achievements feel earned. Ohers where they just don’t care enough to waste screen time on things that aren’t highlighting whatever group they’re a part of

Have been a fair few shows I’ve seen where they’ve done it right, recently Kaos had a trans character who actually felt like a human being instead of a token “hey look we have a trans person”

The recent doctor who special is one of the bad examples, most of the time the woman in a wheelchair is onscreen it’s because they’re drawing attention to the wheelchair (oh no, a ladder, oh no a set of stairs etc etc) and not to develop her character in any way besides that

flashgnash ,

Background noise isn’t an issue for me, if there isn’t an unnatural amount of attention being drawn and the pace of the story isn’t interrupted that’s just adding interest

The problem lies for me when said character isn’t fleshed out in other ways and their only defining trait is that they’re x, or that they don’t give them any character flaws because they’re too afraid to offend that group. Results in a character that doesn’t feel natural to the story

Rockstar Games DDoSed Heavily By Players Protesting New AntiCheat Code (cyberinsider.com)

Rockstar Games’ servers have been under heavy fire from massive DDoS attacks in recent days, causing widespread login and connectivity issues for players of GTA Online. These attacks come in the wake of Rockstar’s recent implementation of BattlEye, a new anti-cheat system designed to crack down on in-game cheating, sparking...

They’re kinda proving rockstar’s point, I am fairly sure the venn diagram of “protesters” (ddosers) and cheaters is more or less a circle

flashgnash ,

I’m upset they nuked Linux support, my PC is Linux and have a steam deck

I’m still not going to fucking ddos them for it

flashgnash ,

I’m pretty sure there’s not a valid reason for players to be able to spawn giant Ferris wheels in people’s garages, that seems like a fairly easy one to test for

flashgnash ,

That’s what I mean, I imagine most of the people ddosing are cheaters, hence the quotations around protesters

flashgnash ,

Cheating is absolutely not the same issue as piracy though, one is people wanting an unearned power trip over others and one is the service issue piracy is

You’re not gonna convince cheaters to stop cheating by offering them a better experience

flashgnash ,

I think people misunderstood my comment, I meant I think the ddosers and the cheaters are more or less the same group. Don’t imagine the majority of people in the Linux community would think that’s a good way to get rockstar to listen

flashgnash ,

I don’t think clientside anticheat is a good solution by any means.

Built in multiplayer cheats? Isn’t that just pay to win?

flashgnash ,

Not exactly what you’re asking for but you should look into tiling window managers, if I’m understanding correctly they do almost exactly what you want

For example on my laptop if I open Firefox it opens in full screen, if I open a terminal it resizes Firefox to half the screen and opens the terminal in the other half, a third and it splits whichever window I’m focused on vertically etc etc

You could achieve what you want by having the VMs in windowed mode and just using a tiling wm

You get the added bonus of virtual desktops that you can flick through with mouse buttons/keybinds/3 finger swipe if you want multiple layouts of different windows

Also I’ve not used it but I’m pretty sure hyprland has something called fake full screen where it tricks windows into thinking they’re full screen while actually being windowed

flashgnash ,

Could have some kind of floating timer window/widget in your bar so you don’t forget

flashgnash ,

Ah I see. At my previous company we developed an in house clock in/out system that I always forgot to use. Never did but I wanted to build a big red button with an Arduino that clocked me in and out with the API and showed a timer

flashgnash ,

This makes me glad not to be on the clock, I suck at remembering to do that stuff.

Though I tend to hyper focus on one thing for 4 or 5 hours at a time anyway

flashgnash ,

That new model with chain of thought reasoning openai released recently has been an overall worse experience than all previous models

flashgnash ,

Looks fine for me using the web interface

flashgnash ,

My fp4 has been very disappointing so far tbh, after a year or so of using it it’s slow unresponsive and the mic doesn’t work

flashgnash ,

Don’t worry the government still know where you are by all the tracking devices they implanted /S

flashgnash ,

You can’t change the CPU or memory afaik.

I could replace the mic but if it’s breaking every year I’d be better off just buying a new second hand phone of better quality every few years

flashgnash ,

That may well be it actually I’ll try keep that in mind

flashgnash ,

I’ve taken the battery out a number of times and it’s not changed anything, I might try a full disassembly at some point anyway just for the fun of it though

flashgnash ,

I’ll give it a go I can’t see how that would help but maybe it’s a loose contact to the touchscreen or something

flashgnash ,

It may well be, it’s possible I got a drop of water in it after washing my hands or something which might’ve done it but I’d be pretty disappointed if that’s enough to break it

flashgnash ,

It’s a fp4 so older and I got it second hand so unsure if the warranty still applies

Will definitely try with the screws though

flashgnash ,

Don’t arch users also hate the derivatives?

flashgnash ,

Linux is free open and hackable, Lemmy is free open and hackable

Also 50% of the population of Lemmy seems to be diehard communists, open source is a similar idea to communism and Microsoft is a pretty good representation of late stage capitalism

flashgnash ,

As much as I don’t like Nintendo’s business practises to be fair in this case many of the pals are straight up copies of Pokémon with one thing changed

Definitely a good case for Nintendo here, not sure this is a winnable battle even without the overwhelming force of Nintendo’s ninjas

flashgnash ,

Ah, had thought the obvious thing for them to go for was copyright because of the obvious similarities

No reasonable person looks at palworld pals and doesn’t see the heavy similarities with pokemon

Because of something I did during an anthropology lecture, I learned the hard way to read the "The following packages will be REMOVED" list when upgrading a package to backports in Debian GNU + Linux.

I upgraded pipewire from stable to backports (I want to know if this is related to my problem why essential packages were removed)...

flashgnash ,

On nixos i managed to uninstall nix (package manager), remove my user account, git, ls, WiFi drivers and basically everything else

I can’t remember how I rescued it now but managed to get it back without a reinstall

flashgnash ,

And this is why you don’t update your system while in the middle of something you need it for

flashgnash ,

I do the same with nix, unless I’m fucking with the bootloader I’ll do risky updates because I can always just boot a previous generation

Not everyone has that luxury though

flashgnash ,

I am capable of running updates myself and I’d rather choose when they happen

Also, Nvidia

flashgnash ,

This is one of the reasons I love nix. Most of the time if I break it I just roll back, if I really fuck it up I just reinstall, rebuild my config and I’m back

flashgnash ,

I could have done that had I not deleted all previous generations in an attempt to make space for the update

flashgnash ,

I’m not sure how true this is, the rich still invest huge amounts of their money in businesses, while they shouldn’t have that much to begin with it’s still in the economy for the most part

flashgnash ,

This was not at all my point though, I’m not saying billionaires are needed I’m saying they do actually put their money into the economy, most are not just sitting on a dragon horde

flashgnash ,

AppImage, build from source, or don’t bother

flashgnash ,

Imagine how much more convenient the world would be if the Chromecast protocol was open source

flashgnash ,

That’s awesome if they’re implementing it.

My Google home and Chromecast at the moment are necessary evils because when I sit down to watch something I don’t want to have to worry about whether it’ll work with x or y, whether I’m getting good bitrate etc

Would however be really cool if I was able to cast my screen, cast YouTube etc from my Linux laptop

Have been able to do it in the past using chrome but I already need to keep two browsers installed don’t want a third

flashgnash ,

If it’s actually possible when my Chromecast stops being usable I’m putting Linux on it and using it to run some light weight projects (someone mentioned you can Linux them)

flashgnash ,

Do they not just… test the blood before they use it anyway? You’d think they’d want to do that regardless

flashgnash ,

No idea what distro you’re currently using but generally you can install whatever window manager/desktop (gui) you want

For a tiling wm I’d recommend hyprland. It’s not the most stable but I’ve had minimal issues with it and it’s really easy to get started with. You can install it alongside gnome/kde I believe and switch between the two on login so if you break one you’ve still got the other

flashgnash ,

Bear in mind most tiling wms don’t come with much installed by default, you’ll need a bar and a launcher at least

flashgnash ,

Depending on use case it doesn’t sound like that’d be an issue. I used one of the like 3rd generation Chromebooks for school, I had to rdp for visual studio and Photoshop but it was perfect for everything else

flashgnash ,

You’ve gotta ask does an old person care more about Google spying on them or being able to use a computer as easily as possible
