Phase one, attract users by providing a good service.
Phase two, once the users are locked in, squeeze them for all they’re worth by selling them to business customers (advertisers and/or data buyers).
Phase three, once the business customers are locked in, squeeze them for all they’re worth by threatening to deny them access to the users on whom they now depend.
Spez seems to think Reddit has the pull to make phase 3 happen. I rather doubt it, but we’ll see.
My guess is that phase three will work for a while. But I think you’re right that eventually they are going to drive that thing into the ground. Because it’s never enough pure profit for rent-seeking scum, and there is no lower limit to the abuse they’ll inflict on their content creators (who they call users but think of as products).
Blog post (?) from Catherynne Valente about this exact topic
Stop benefitting from the internet, it’s not for you to enjoy, it’s for us to use to extract money from you. Stop finding beauty and connection in the world, loneliness is more profitable and easier to control.
Yeah, as soon as the API thing happened I switched to Lemmy for mobile browsing and like it more than Reddit (Connect is pretty good, but even the mobile browser site is solid).
The more they squeeze, the more popular alternatives like Lemmy, Kbin/Mbin, Tildes, etc. will become.
If he really had balls he’d restrict access to the site and improve the built-in search engine.
If reddit’s own search worked well nobody would care. Engines like DDG even have bang codes that send you to a site’s own engine. So instead of having to add “site:reddit.com” to the search on DDG I’d just add “r!” and it would end up being the same thing. IF the internal search didn’t suck.
You’re not alone. For how immensely popular he is, I’ve yet to ever watch any of his videos, or even have YouTube recommend them to me.
Only reason I know about him are a few videos from other channels, like the epic rap battles of history episode, and one that was criticizing his ghost kitchen. But I think the first time I heard about him was when every YouTuber was trying to jump on his hype when he was planting a ton of trees or something like that?
I also haven’t seen anything from him, but I’ve seen things that talk about him. My understanding is he’s a guy who makes outlandish videos, and some of that is “charity” (is it charity if you profit more off the video about it?) that got really popular. Other than that, I don’t really know what he does.
I tried watching a video of his once because I was genuinely interested in the subject. There were so many jump cuts it was unwatchable. Now I know all YouTube videos for kids are like that
YouTube creators in general have loves their jump cuts for ages. At first I think it was because they were amateurs who were be to video editing and didn’t understand established editing techniques. But now they do it intentionally because kids can’t sit still for too long.
From what I hear he’s really not so objectionable and people enjoy his videos. I am yet to ever watch one though and that’s purely out of spite. Somehow YouTube seemed to try so hard to push this dude in particular that I decided to specifically not watch anything he was in, this meant avoiding his stuff and also anything from anyone else I actually like if I could tell from the thumbnail or description he was going to be in it. I just about managed it because I’ve never seen anything with him directly, but I have ended up seeing parodies of his videos so I now in spite of myself know what must usually be in them, and I’ve seen the famous video critiquing all the spin off food businesses he’s started up off the back of his famous name.
He’s probably really not that bad, even if his obscene wealth is objectionable, but my contrarian nature just can’t abide all the hype and cheerleading. Hopefully when he finally stops being popular, I’ll have managed to miss everything he’s in and maintain my pointless personal record of dodging the beastly bullets.
I don’t know the details but there’s a bunch of allegations coming out against him now. He’s been objectionable for a while IMO, but it seems to only just now be coming out.
I would feel bad for Zayden, except that in an alternate timeline where his father was named Brad, Zayden would have been banned named Hunter. So it could be worse. I would rather be Zayden than Hunter.
Most Hunters I’ve met are pretty cool. Can’t say the same about Drew’s, Brock’s, or Clayton’s, but I feel like those are becoming more uncommon as I get older.
pfSense = Firewall and router system based on FreeBSD. Has both open source and commercial versions. Built for SMB to Enterprise uses. Extremely powerful with all of the bells and whistles you’d expect from a professional firewall product.
OPNSense = Basically pfSense with a different UI. It’s a fork of pfSense. Much of the same capability, but is built by a smaller company.
OpenWRT = Replacement firmware for embedded devices (as well as x86). It’s open source WiFi router firmware that runs on tens of thousands of devices. Many vendors will even base their custom firmware on OpenWRT and put a different skin on it (GL.iNet, for example).
If you’ve a small / normal network and OpenWrt will provide you with a much cleaner open-source experience and also allow for all the customization you would like;
There are routers specifically made to run OpenWrt, so it isn’t only a replacement firmware.
It’s easy to believe you’re invincible in your twenties. Or “later me can deal with it.”. As that later version of me, I’m not a huge fan of that earlier version in a lot of ways. It’s fine, I’m who I am for what I went through, and I’m righting the ship. But the more cans you kick down the road, the more you have to deal with later and the harder they are to deal with. Physically, mentally, financially. It’s ok to try to live life freely, but definitely be aware of this and consider kicking one less can every chance you get.
So much this… Despite trying to drive defensively I have been involved in two major car accidents. The first one I walked away from, but the second one put me on Flight for Life. Despite the accident itself being pretty bad, the only physical issue was a broken leg that took a couple years to heal properly. However the REAL issue took longer to realize – something from that accident has caused me to have continued sleep issues since then. I’ll be on medications the rest of my life probably, and even then I still have trouble getting restful sleep if I’ve been physically active.
Yeah it’s easy to feel invincible when you’re young, and your body can heal from a lot, but just remember that those things can also fuck up your shit in ways you might not realize until years later. Things you take for granted now (like sleep) can really screw up your enjoyment of life when they don’t work right.
What about the electric socket? I like Type F, but I hate how it doesn’t have replaceable fuse, like Type G. I also think 3-pin should be mandatory. And about electricity, 230V, 50Hz should be the standard.
Over here in India, we have type C, D and M, and they’re decent, I guess. From a safety perspective, it is kinda bad, give how I confused type C slot with type M. This way, I have accidentally bent the two-pin many-a-times.
Type I. The angled pins make it much more stable than F, and there’s heaps of options for cable exiting sideways, upwards, downwards, straight out, etc .
What I like about socket type I is that it has both 2 and 3-pin variants, which is a nice feature. And you’re right about how stable it is, given how the pins are angled.
However, from all the images I’ve seen online, it seems to me that those cables aren’t at the bottom or the top, but toward the center. I mean, if you had something like a sofa or a bed pushed towards the plus, that would cause egregious amount of damage to the plug. Now, I could be in the wrong here.
Also, the ground isn’t tall enough, as screen in type G, D or M, which could be a safety hazard. And the point about the accessible fuse, which is a plus in type G, apparently doesn’t seem to be in any other socket.
In support of type F socket, they’re socketed - as in, a significant part of the plug has to go in first. And this interaction enables the plugs to be grounded first, before any of the other pins come into contact. You’re getting both stability and ground connection at the same time.
This can actually be a bit of an annoyance, sometimes… If the socket is right next to the floor, or in a densely packed area, for example, it can make plugging difficult.
And if it does have a ground pin, it’s mandated that the ground be longer than the power pins, for exactly the reason you mentioned about G,D,M.
The recessed feature of F I do like, even if it makes the plugs physically larger than they need to be.
That’s actually nice that there’s a low-profile plug available. I could see a alternative type socket with recessed plug socket, sideways ground like the Schuko, and the angled pins.
Good choices. Fixed-rate fines are unfair. To someone living on minimum wage, a $500 fine can be devastating. To someone pulling down a huge salary, not so much. They’re essentially unequal punishments for the same violation.
Yup. And not just fines imo. For instance, a cop who rapes or blatantly assaults someone, especially on duty, should have their sentence at least doubled due to the power dynamics.
If the punishment for all of those is death, and one’s power is a multiplier in punishment, one must reasonably assume that everyone has the same level of power.
I like the Scandinavian system of fines for breaking the law. They’re scaled based on your annual income so a speeding ticket isn’t just a fee for the wealthy.
Still a fee for the wealthy. If I earn a million a year I can easily give up 90 % of that and still live comfortably. That’s not the case for someone who earns 100,000.
In Denmark if you are charged with hazardous driving the police can confiscate your car. A Norwegian who had bought a Lamborghini in Germany took the trip through Denmark back home and hit 228 km/t km/h. He lost the car and will never get it back.
Sure, and while I think that’s a good idea, it’s not really the same thing. Even though a rich person is more likely to drive a more expensive vehicle, you can have wealthy people driving sensible cars (especially the really wealthy) and lower income idiots, I mean people, having saved up and taken out ridiculous loans to get their expensive dream car that they can’t afford. Confiscating those two vehicles would be the complete opposite of equality in terms of financial pain.
I was just responding to the “deadliest” comment but hippos aren’t even in the top 10, unless you’re only counting mammals and then they are 3rd. Mosquitos, humans, dogs, snakes, and snails round out the top 5. I guess that fact upset some dog lovers. ¯_ (ツ)_/¯
Which is terribly underperforming when you consider how many more dogs exist in proximity to humans compared to hippos. If a prankster wizard suddenly conjured a few million hippos into homes around the world you can bet they wouldn’t settle for merely snuffing out 50x-70x more humans. On the upside, they’d definitely chomp a lot of people we don’t like too
I encountered that a few times growing up too, I’ll never forget the ravenous way they murdered every marble they saw without a hint of concern for the devastated marble families left behind .
I couldn’t find estimates for snakes and scorpions and completely ignored the invertebrates here, but from those options, Tigers kill the most humans yearly per wild individual.
There are about 5500 Tigers in the wild killing 50 humans yearly, while 115000 Hippos kill 500 humans yearly.
So Tigers kill 9 humans per thousand individuals, Hippos kill 4, next would be Lions with 2.5 .
Maybe they are the more deadly than Tigers on a per species basis since there are only 2 species of Hippo while 6 living species of Tigers exist… but then the other kill statistics would get a lot more precise as well. And I wont even try to analyze how often humans interact with specific animal groups.
Lock the door, drill the core. Charge them for a new core + re keying + installation and wear on the drillbit. Use 30 minutes and make sure the price is 3x of your regular unlock fee. Now they are 6x on your time for only 3x the price. Super bargain
Yep, hooks, shims, combs, etc. I love them, customers hate them. Get a better door/lock is what I tell them, but your next lock out might be more expensive.
Oh for sure. I meet in the middle, my deadbolt is alright, and it’s always locked unless I’m actively using the door, if I walk out without my keys I’ll get locked out because of the knob, but I can just shrum my way right past the knob lock and retrieve my keys so I can lock the bolt on the way out, and be good to go!
The only thing I need a locksmith for is I have a safe that needs to be re-locked with a dial instead of digital.
That reminds me of the joke where a factory has a big machine break down. They call in a specialist to fix it.
The specialist looks at the machine for a moment, hits it with a small hammer and it starts working instantly.
But on being told that the repair cost is $500, the factory owner is outraged and asks how that can possibly be justified for less than a minute’s work.
“Well, it’s $5 for use of the hammer, $495 for knowing exactly where to hit the machine.”
I can guarantee they already had that shit ready to go, in case Biden pulled a McConnell and stroked out in front of a camera. His advanced age is 100% a factor in them being ready to deploy the Harris hate, because he (along with much of our elected officials) could keel over at any moment simply due to old age.
This is it. I didn’t hate them because “big tech” like other people here. I loved Google and their stuff. But one by one they killed my favorite things, and they made me hate them.
If you don’t hate Google for killing s service you loved them your just waiting for them to do it.
They’ve killed a fair few of the services I’ve liked over the years. But there are other services I still like (with caveats) that I still use so it’s a mixed bag for me. If they kill those services I’ll move on to others.
Always vote. Progressives lose elections because 30% of any population votes for the conservative at every single election, no matter what, like it’s a religion. Progressives need a culture that says: ALWAYS VOTE. It doesn’t fucking matter if it doesn’t fucking matter. Vote anyway. Let your kids see you voting like it’s actually important. Make it important.
