Long-forbidden French anti-riot force sent to Martinique as thousands defy bans on protests (apnews.com)

France has sent a group of special anti-riot police that’s been banned for 65 years to the French Caribbean island of Martinique, where protesters have gathered despite the government barring demonstrations in parts of the island....

BastingChemina ,

The government could listen to people, this is what protests are, people who want to be heard.

But instead of listening to people the president decided to appoint a far right government despite the fact that the left for the majority during the last election.

It sounds like a far fetched idea but this article is talking in details about this theory.

Laptop Recommendation Please (Solved)

(Solved) I would like a small laptop to use to log medical data (Weight, Blood Pressure, etc) as I gather it. I need it to be small like 10’. it can be low power because I will probably use it only CLI, no GUI, but I need it to be inexpensive. ARM-based is ok, as long as I can SSH into my desktop machine.

BastingChemina ,

I would look into the Surfaces, you can find a cheap second hand one and install Linux on it.

BastingChemina ,

I would add: do these steps in this specific order.

BastingChemina ,

I think apple used to be a generic term for fruits.

It is especially apparent for exotic fruits, for example here is a list of fruits from the Caribbean, none of then are related to the European apple:

  • golden apple
  • wax apple/rose apple
  • pineapple
  • sugar apple
  • custard apple
BastingChemina ,

The agreement between Roscosmos and NASA still exist. Each Soyuz mission to the ISS is carrying an American astronaut and each NASA mission is carrying a Russian cosmonaut.

The next mission with the Dragon was supposed to carry 4 astronauts, 3 Americans and 1 Russian. Now the capsule will only carry two astronaut to leave space for the rescue so only 1 American astronaut and 1 Russian will go up on the Crew-9 mission.

I really don’t have much knowledge on it but it sound like it’s would be an actual good application of blockchain.

Couldn’t a blockchain be used to certify that pictures are original and have not been tampered with ?

On the other hand if it was possible I’m certain someone either have already started it, it is the prefect investor magnet “Using blockchain to counter AI

BastingChemina ,

Yep, I think we pictures are becoming a valuable as text and it is fine, we just need to get used to it.

Before photography became mainstream the only source of information was written, it is extremely simple to make a fake story so people had to rely on trusted sources. Then for a short period of history photography became a (kinda) reliable sources of information by itself and this trust system lost its importance.

In most cases seeing a photo means that we were seeing a true reflection of what happened, especially if we were song multiple photos of the same event.

Now we are arriving at the end of this period, we cannot trust a photo by itself anymore, tampering a photo is becoming as easy as writing a fake story. This is a great opportunity for journalists I believe.

Best way to save battery? (kbin.earth)

stock pixel os had a feature where you could "pause" unnecessary apps. any way to do that? on graphene os currently. I already use saver tuner on extreme, but I don't need Google play services, or my email, or any of that. manually disabling the app also removed it from the home screen which is less than ideal. thanks guys....

BastingChemina ,

Yes, and make sure that the background in dark mode is really black.

On some apps you have “Dark mode” and “Amoled Dark”. Make sure to pick the amoled dark.

For me it made a huge difference in battery life.

New hope of finding life on Mars after indication of water, scientists say (www.theguardian.com)

While it is thought some of the water was lost to space, research has suggested that is not the full story, and that water could have been incorporated into minerals, buried as ice, or even exist in liquid form deep within the planet’s crust....

BastingChemina ,

It is very possible that it happened the other way around already.

Lifev could have appeared on Mars when it was more hospitable and then a meteorite from Mars transported early form of life to Earth.

This refers to when two or more people encounter each other in completely coincidental fashion. I lived for two years in Cameroon when I was a kid (around 4-5 years old), we were regularly spending time with another family who had kids and the same age.

Fast forward 15 years later, I’m 19 entering university in a totally new city in France. The first day every student is sitting in the amphitheater and they call the name of every student.

When they call the last name of the person close to me I recognize the name so I use it as an ice breaker to start a conversation saying that I knew a family with his name in Cameroon when I was a kid … He says that yeah he lived in Cameroon as a kid at the same time as I did, so here we go we found each other again 15 years later !

I love my steel bike, it’s great on the road, on gravel or for a quick grocery shop.

I’m not gonna win any competition with it but it is honestly such a fun bike.

And with care it should last forever.

BastingChemina ,

From what I see the thrusters are faulty.

Boeing said the cause is a Teflon seal bulging, they cannot identify why and when it is bulging but they say it will not happen on the way down.

Also, all the previous flights of Starliner had thruster malfunctions or shutdowns and they “fixed it” without knowing the root cause of the issue.

BastingChemina ,

Not anymore, it was designed for 7 people in 2 seat rows using propulsive landing.

During development they switched to parachute instead of propulsive landing, since parachute can be rougher they had to lean the seat more back for the astronauts to be able to handle more G’s.

In this lean back position there is not enough space for a second row of seats anymore

BastingChemina , (edited )

It seems like there is disagreement within NASA whether it is safe for the astronauts to return on Starliner or not.

Boeing engineers did test on the ground to try to replicate the issue that is occuring on the thrusters. They found thqt the issue isndue to a Teflon seals bulging but they don’t understand precisely why is the seal buldging and when it occurs.

However they feel confident enough that the problem would not happen on the way back to earth. Some people are NASA are not as confident as they are and would like to know the precise cause of the bulging.

About the software: there is a capability in the software for the capsule to undock autonomously.

However it would means resurrecting parameters that have not been used and updated since 2022, there is some reconfiguration needed and testing to make sure it still does what is needed despite the different hardware and software change that happened since then.

It is really not looking good for Boeing right now and I don’t know if the Starliner program will survive this accident.

Applied to a real situation I’ve been through :

  • my pool 4.5m wide, 9m long and 1.5m deep, the current level of salt is 2.5g/l and a bag of salt weight 20kg. How many bags of salt do I need to bring the level to 3g/l ?
  • OR: my pool 14’9" wide, 29’6" long and 5’ deep, the current level of salt is 2500ppm and a bag of salt weights 40lbs. How many bags of salt do I need to bring the level to 3000ppm ?

The answer to one is 1.5 bag, the answer to the other one is “fuck that, I’m getting 8 bags at the store and it should be good enough”

BastingChemina ,

The fact that NASA has been considering the option to use the Dragon capsule to bring them back shows that there is some concerns.

BastingChemina ,

About noise, above 30km/h electric cars are as noisy as gas powered one.

It’s better but not the panacea either.

BastingChemina ,

Yes, it’s better for safety and health reason.

Plus 30km/h is in the speed range of bikes, so it become much more accessible to bike around in the city and more people start to do it.

It did not happened but it shows that there is already decades of work and investments to clean the river and it shows, the Seine is much cleaner today than few decades ago.

It’s still not perfect but it’s getting there slowly and the Olympics gave a boost to it.

Yes, A dim bulb is extremely inefficient, it will use a lot of electricity for a very small amount of light.

On the other hand you can make very efficient lightbulb that will be very bright for a small amount of electricity but last only for a few minutes.

The 1000 hours limits is a nice middle ground.

BastingChemina ,

Houses in Europe are connected to the grid too.

These systems are approved in Europe by utilities because they have failsafes implemented to prevent back feeding electricity in the grid.

The fact that these systems are still illegal in the US is a political issue, not a technical one.

You are getting downvoted because it sound to absurd for France. I would have have downvoted you few years ago but unfortunately this is really what is happening right now.

In this case the dangerous far-left extremist they arrested was just a guy who was planning a graffiti. The “far left literature” was a sociology manual because he is a student.

In the mean time the French police also arrested 45 XR militant, they all been release now because they have nothing against them except for one of the activist who will be judge for the dangerous act of … Refusing to give the pin to unlock his phone.

Composing is really easy once you understand one basic rule: if it smell you have to much humid nitrogen.

Add a good amount of carbon to it and the smell will be gone the next day. Carbon can be dry leaves, cardboard, wood … Usually “brown” material.

The is the exact same thing in dry toilet or chicken coop, if it smell bad add some carbon to it to bring back the balance between nitrogen and cardboard.
