From my open office experience, it is often not better with colleagues. A lot of noise, distractions, useless conversations. That is not as bad as kids, but this is why I always dreamt to WFH. I will always be grateful to the person who under cooked that bat in 2019.

I doubt they will. Ninendo is not fighting with PS and Xbox, and it surely has no reason to fight with Steam Deck and other powerful portables. They found their market, and they are extremely successful at what they are doing. One does not need super hardware to create wonderful games.

That’s not true. While the USSR did have a significant manufacturing capacity, it was often inefficient due to the planned economy. This led to factories closing after 1991 because they couldn’t compete with the free market. The quality of products was often subpar, and there was a lack of diversity and functionality. In fact, many essential items weren’t even manufactured.

This was a major contributor to the Soviet Union’s economic downfall and eventual collapse. If you read archival records (available through various books, for instance), you’ll find that even high-ranking officials like ministers and vice ministers were writing letters to each other in the 80s about the poor output in their respective sectors, including the oil industry, which was struggling due to outdated technology.

In the USSR, higher education being free (as is the socialist tradition) gave people a lot more choice

The idea that the Soviet Union had exceptional higher education is a myth. In reality, their education system was overly focused on technical skills, neglecting essential life skills like critical thinking, creativity, decision-making, and many others.

This became apparent in the 90s when many supposedly ‘highly educated’ individuals were involved in fraudulent schemes, failed to build and stand for democracy. While it’s true that the USSR produced some outstanding scientists, that’s where the excellence ended. A society cannot thrive solely on the backs of scientists and enginners. A well-rounded education is essential for prosperity.

I see a lot of gentle replies. I wonder if they would have looked the same if the browser in question was Google Chrome. The issue is that you can’t win this game. They ask you one thing, then another, then another, until you either fully comply or stop cooperating, and they block you anyway. That’s a reputational hit for the company and its product, whose only competitive advantage was its reputation.

Doesn’t lemmy sync posts, comments, and pictures with other instances? I remember after a CP attack some instances manually turned it off in the code to avoid troubles, and also had to clear their storage.

Yes, it’s tiring. A lot of people and communities on various platforms are cultivating negativity, focusing on bad things. Even a simple meme about a cat can produce a comment section dominated by replies about how dangerous cats are for wild animals. Okay? Can we have a laugh because the cat did something silly?

I read that our brains are more likely to react to negativity, as that was a defensive mechanism in the past. But today, the internet can mess up our stimulus very, very badly. I don’t even open most of these posts you’ve mentioned, I ignore them like white noise. You can’t constantly bathe in that information and be mentally fine.

I used to play TF2 a lot in my school years, but today I find it too intimidating. I’ve never been good at competitive games, and I’m even worse in my 30s :D But I like the idea that TF2 is still alive, people are playing, and I could return at some point. Alas, with the alleged development of a new hero shooter by Valve I don’t expect them to pay real attention to TF2.

This is always the problem: extremists want to end something but have no idea what will replace what they want to eradicate. It won’t become better by itself. People take the good things we have for granted, focus their attention on the bad things without trying to solve them, and think that it’ll somehow become better if we destroy everything. It won’t. It’s not hard to do worse than we’re doing right now; it’s incredibly easy. What is truly hard is doing better. That’s why extremists are focused on destruction and not improvement.

Exactly. People jump into discussions about how bad our world is, but they don’t seem to know how bad it was 100, 200, or 300 years ago. And then they offer communism as the solution - the same communism that resulted in bloodshed everywhere it has been applied. It’s sad to see people turn to solutions that are proven to be bad due to a lack of education and ignorance, instead of working on something that could really help. Such a waste of effort.

I don’t like this requirement, but I can understand that this is their product and they can do that. The real problem is that I can’t even buy these games as Sony isn’t selling them in my country. What is more hilarious is that I can get Ghosts of Tsushima or God of War for PS5 on a physical disk, but I can’t buy them on Steam. Sony even has official stores where they sell PS5 in some of these countries, including mine. That looks incredibly strange. I wonder what Sony is trying to achieve. Apparently, they think that the end justifies the means. I guess we’ll find out soon enough. I’d bet on an independent PC store.

I like the idea, but I don’t like that everything is tied to a single account. If it’s compromised so are your emails, calendar, contacts, files, and passwords. But the service is good enough to replace Google, and choosing between the two, I’d choose Proton.

Yep, VPN makes it easier to access different services. Connect once, open anything you want in the local service. But I can set up WG without a VPS. To me that extra layer seems unnecessary.

Every time I hear about TF2, it has issues with bots. Which is sad. I don’t play anymore, but obviously there are people why enjoy and love the game to this day.
