Mate, did you really wake up this beautiful Sunday thinking it’s worth dying on this hill?

You know this book is not real because Arch Linux has no failures 😎

How many people actually want fully on-site IT jobs?

I’ve been looking for a new job as a software developer. The huge majority of job listings I see in my area are hybrid or remote. I just had an introductory phone call with Vizio (which didn’t specify the location type in the job listing). The recruiter told me that the job was fully on-site, which I told her was a deal...

From my open office experience, it is often not better with colleagues. A lot of noise, distractions, useless conversations. That is not as bad as kids, but this is why I always dreamt to WFH. I will always be grateful to the person who under cooked that bat in 2019.

Luckily you don’t need to look at it while driving! I’m more concerned about spikes, they don’t look comfortable to constantly touch them.

Because this is how addictions work, no? People want to quit alcohol and tobacco, but can’t, as it offers pleasure their brains fail to reject.

So you completely accept the state’s monopoly on violence

That’s the whole point of the state. And no, you guys are not fighting the US army with its armored vehicles, rockets, bombs, drones, etc. with your guns if it comes to this.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

That’s a very rare case, and you can whitelist a domain using the pihole’s web interface. It may require extra two clicks, but I had to do that maybe twice in the last year.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Yeah, that is exactly what somebody who is planning to announce Switch 2 would say.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

I doubt they will. Ninendo is not fighting with PS and Xbox, and it surely has no reason to fight with Steam Deck and other powerful portables. They found their market, and they are extremely successful at what they are doing. One does not need super hardware to create wonderful games.

Come the 80s, their manufacturing was well ahead of the west, and there weren’t any food issues either.

That’s not true. While the USSR did have a significant manufacturing capacity, it was often inefficient due to the planned economy. This led to factories closing after 1991 because they couldn’t compete with the free market. The quality of products was often subpar, and there was a lack of diversity and functionality. In fact, many essential items weren’t even manufactured.

This was a major contributor to the Soviet Union’s economic downfall and eventual collapse. If you read archival records (available through various books, for instance), you’ll find that even high-ranking officials like ministers and vice ministers were writing letters to each other in the 80s about the poor output in their respective sectors, including the oil industry, which was struggling due to outdated technology.

In the USSR, higher education being free (as is the socialist tradition) gave people a lot more choice

The idea that the Soviet Union had exceptional higher education is a myth. In reality, their education system was overly focused on technical skills, neglecting essential life skills like critical thinking, creativity, decision-making, and many others.

This became apparent in the 90s when many supposedly ‘highly educated’ individuals were involved in fraudulent schemes, failed to build and stand for democracy. While it’s true that the USSR produced some outstanding scientists, that’s where the excellence ended. A society cannot thrive solely on the backs of scientists and enginners. A well-rounded education is essential for prosperity.

I’d recommend reading some books about the Soviet Union, particularly its later years. It’s not feasible for me to provide an in-depth education on this topic in a single post. It’s clear that you are not knowledgeable, and I’m not sure why you’re arguing without being informed on the subject ¯_(ツ)_/¯

My favorite recent example:

…steampowered.com/…/Banishers_Ghosts_of_New_Eden/ (50 EUR)

playstation.com/…/banishers-ghosts-of-new-eden/ (60 EUR)

PS5 game on sale did cost 2 EUR less than the regular price on Steam. I don’t think Steam overcharges me. It’s not like the game is cheaper somewhere else on PC either: …epicgames.com/…/banishers-ghosts-of-new-eden-f9e… (50 EUR)

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Yes, but they sue Steam that has competitors selling games for the same price instead of literal monopolies. Even Apple was forced to open up to other app stores.

Just stop using YT altogether.

And use what? I’m not on YouTube for YouTube. I’m on YouTube for the content that is often unavailable elsewhere.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

I see a lot of gentle replies. I wonder if they would have looked the same if the browser in question was Google Chrome. The issue is that you can’t win this game. They ask you one thing, then another, then another, until you either fully comply or stop cooperating, and they block you anyway. That’s a reputational hit for the company and its product, whose only competitive advantage was its reputation.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

I think what we currently see is too much misinformation.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

If there are too many comments, it means you have to support them just like the code itself. Otherwise, like any other documentation, comments will quickly go out of sync.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

But it’s not a hard requirement unless you expect to have lots of local communities posting pictures.

Doesn’t lemmy sync posts, comments, and pictures with other instances? I remember after a CP attack some instances manually turned it off in the code to avoid troubles, and also had to clear their storage.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

I’m not sure what to feel about this. I’m a huge fan of the series, but I’ll wait for real reviews from real players.

Wow, pay extra 30 EUR to play 2 weeks earlier and avoid spoilers. I might just as well pirate it.

Today, new research conducted for a new book, Impact Engineering, has shown that 65% software projects adopting Agile requirements engineering practices fail to be delivered on time and within budget, to a high standard of quality. By contrast, projects adopting a new Impact Engineering approach detailed in a new book released today only failed 10% of the time.

All you need to know about this study.

Don't you all get tired of the constant negativity?

Despite not subscribing to political communities and having a large number of content filters based on keywords, my feed here is still for a large part all negative articles and ragebait. Elon Musk this and Israel that. Microsoft ruining windows, AI ruining internet, right wingers and capitalism ruining the world, police being...

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Yes, it’s tiring. A lot of people and communities on various platforms are cultivating negativity, focusing on bad things. Even a simple meme about a cat can produce a comment section dominated by replies about how dangerous cats are for wild animals. Okay? Can we have a laugh because the cat did something silly?

I read that our brains are more likely to react to negativity, as that was a defensive mechanism in the past. But today, the internet can mess up our stimulus very, very badly. I don’t even open most of these posts you’ve mentioned, I ignore them like white noise. You can’t constantly bathe in that information and be mentally fine.

I used to play TF2 a lot in my school years, but today I find it too intimidating. I’ve never been good at competitive games, and I’m even worse in my 30s :D But I like the idea that TF2 is still alive, people are playing, and I could return at some point. Alas, with the alleged development of a new hero shooter by Valve I don’t expect them to pay real attention to TF2.

I’m looking forwards to the end of western imperialism

This is always the problem: extremists want to end something but have no idea what will replace what they want to eradicate. It won’t become better by itself. People take the good things we have for granted, focus their attention on the bad things without trying to solve them, and think that it’ll somehow become better if we destroy everything. It won’t. It’s not hard to do worse than we’re doing right now; it’s incredibly easy. What is truly hard is doing better. That’s why extremists are focused on destruction and not improvement.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Exactly. People jump into discussions about how bad our world is, but they don’t seem to know how bad it was 100, 200, or 300 years ago. And then they offer communism as the solution - the same communism that resulted in bloodshed everywhere it has been applied. It’s sad to see people turn to solutions that are proven to be bad due to a lack of education and ignorance, instead of working on something that could really help. Such a waste of effort.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

I don’t like this requirement, but I can understand that this is their product and they can do that. The real problem is that I can’t even buy these games as Sony isn’t selling them in my country. What is more hilarious is that I can get Ghosts of Tsushima or God of War for PS5 on a physical disk, but I can’t buy them on Steam. Sony even has official stores where they sell PS5 in some of these countries, including mine. That looks incredibly strange. I wonder what Sony is trying to achieve. Apparently, they think that the end justifies the means. I guess we’ll find out soon enough. I’d bet on an independent PC store.

Because some music is not available on streaming platforms. Occasionally artists and labels decide to split their ways, and suddenly their older albums are gone. Over the years I started losing notable chunks of music I like from my playlists.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

When it comes to preserving my data? Yes. Though I’d be concerned about privacy of my diary too, I get your point. Public code is one thing, but personal notes is another.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Didn’t I answer this question in my previous reply?

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Same for me with Ghosts of Tsushima. I haven’t pirated a single game in 15 years. It’s crazy that Sony doesn’t sell a game in a EU country for God knows what reasons.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

I like the idea, but I don’t like that everything is tied to a single account. If it’s compromised so are your emails, calendar, contacts, files, and passwords. But the service is good enough to replace Google, and choosing between the two, I’d choose Proton.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Should we do that though? I’m choosing between playing PS5 and configuring my home server. I’m not being paid for either of that. But skills I obtain while tinkering with the server actually help me be at some tasks at work.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

That’s true. But as we were speaking about an external service (Proton), I was thinking about diversification. I use Proton for emails, but I don’t use Proton Pass opting for another external password manager.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

I agree. I was thinking about using different services for different tasks instead of putting everything into the same basket. I’m not self-hosting an email server either.

cheddar OP ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Quite often I see replies like “don’t open ports, use tailscale”. Maybe they mix different reasons and solutions, confusing people like me :D

cheddar OP ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Yep, VPN makes it easier to access different services. Connect once, open anything you want in the local service. But I can set up WG without a VPS. To me that extra layer seems unnecessary.

cheddar OP ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

That’s what I was thinking too. Thank you!

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Every time I hear about TF2, it has issues with bots. Which is sad. I don’t play anymore, but obviously there are people why enjoy and love the game to this day.
