Plex and Jellyfin both work fine on Linux. Installing is as simple as it is on Windows, because they offer Linux downloads as well.

This is particularly true for politicalized trials, because appeals courts are almost always more conservative than the lower courts. As you appeal higher, the courts tend to be more and more conservative, so a conservative’s chances of winning increase. So if you want to prevent a conservative from winning on appeal, the best way is to never give them anything to appeal in the first place.

Yeah, dogs have a prey drive, and babies are unfortunately right in that “looks like prey” zone. Because, ya know, babies are prey. Your dog will fuck up a baby for the same reason that they’ll fuck up a squirrel or a cat.

Yup. The adults gave themselves the authority to declare perpetual adult swim. And now people are realizing that they’ve spent the entire time shitting in the pool before they die.

Those protests need to be heavily armed. It sounds radical, but that’s the proven method to avoid violently getting busted up.

During the civil rights movement, peaceful protests were violently broken, but armed protests were politely watched from across the street. Because cops have zero qualms about violently busting up an unarmed crowd, but get really fucking sweaty when the protestors can shoot back. It’s why the Black Panthers got started; People noticed the trend, and a group formed to arm protestors and stop them from getting busted.

It was so effective that it led to Reagan and the NRA passing the most restrictive gun control law the country had ever seen. The Mulford Act was quickly drafted and passed by republicans, to criminalize armed protests. Because lawmakers saw the armed protestors on their front porch, and saw the cops entirely unwilling to stop it.

Ironically, the reason liberal protests get busted is because they’re peaceful. White power rallies are always heavily armed, but liberals have a moral aversion to firearms so they have left themselves open to abuse.

If you’re a contractor, you should be carrying your own insurance anyways. Lots of beginners don’t bother setting up an LLC and insurance, because they don’t realize how bad it can be if they have an accident on the job. If you haven’t set up that LLC and have insurance at a bare minimum, then you’re in for a world of shit if someone gets hurt.

Source: Was a freelancer for a decade. Half of the goobers I worked around were sole owner/operators of an LLC, and the others were completely open to personal liability if they dropped something on someone.

Yup. My buddy owned a hellcat. That’s a $90k car, with like 800 horsepower. It was stolen. He had an AirTag under the seat, giving him detailed location data. He was on the phone with 911, and they were refusing to do anything about it. Told him to come down to the station and file a police report.

Then he mentioned his handgun was under the seat. Cops were on the scene in less than 2 minutes, with guns drawn.

The TL;DR is that the jurisdiction in which the case happened has a very narrow definition of what constitutes rape; It requires penis-in-vagina insertion. Anything else is “only” sexual abuse.

Trump grabbed her breasts and inserted his fingers into her vagina. All of it non-consensually. But where it happened, that isn’t enough to qualify as rape, because it didn’t involve PiV sex. The judge was clarifying that no, the case didn’t say he raped her, but that is only because of the incredibly narrow definition of the word “rape”. The judge was basically saying that in common parlance, (not the jurisdiction’s narrow legal definitions), most people would agree that what Trump did was in fact rape.

The judge’s statement was in response to Trump’s lawyers going “LoL wEll AkShuAllY hE nEveR RapED HeR”, like some sort of “it’s not actually pedophilia it’s ephebophilia, and that’s not as bad” argument. The judge’s statement is also in line with what psychiatric fields and the justice department define as rape, which includes penetration with any appendages or objects. But again, the local laws had a narrower definition.

Also worth noting that New York quickly changed their legal definitions following the lawsuit. Because the lawsuit was a giant beacon to the fact that they were one of the last places in the country to still strictly define rape as PiV penetration. So if it were to happen again today, the verdict would have said Trump raped her.

During the Jan6 riot, the Secret Service tried to get Mike Pence into a car with agents that Pence didn’t recognize. The worry was that the agents were either rogue, or working directly for Trump.

Either way, Pence refused to get into the car because he knew he had to certify the election, which meant he had to stay in the building. His worry was that rogue agents (or agents taking orders from Trump) would spirit him away and prevent him from certifying the results.

The point of a TL;DR is to explain the link to third parties, and maybe add some context. I’m assuming you’ve already read the article, and it wasn’t directed at you.

Yeah, that corporate tax credit is also why the Ford F-150 is the most commonly purchased vehicle by millionaires and billionaires. It’s the smallest vehicle able to be classified as a work truck, to qualify for tax credits. They can basically deduct the entire cost of the vehicle on their taxes, because they purchase it through a shell corporation (of which they’re the sole owner and operator.)

Ah, so the European version of the June bug. America (especially the south) is swarmed by tons of these every year:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/6aa48a44-414c-495b-8638-c282fae66e99.jpeg

In certain areas, there will be thousands of them. They’re stupid flyers and just sort of bounce off of everything. It’s pretty common for your porch lights to be swarmed by a dozen of them every evening.

My friends and I joke that they’re the reason to wear protective gear when riding motorcycles. Running into a June bug at 70 MPH feels like getting shot with a paintball, and you’ll probably run into several during your ride.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

Ding ding ding. Rubble-covered battlefields aren’t the end-goal here. The end goal is urban warfare, precision strikes, and area denial by police. Cops can post these on patrol outside of a billionaire’s house. Charging isn’t an issue, because you can simply have them automatically return to base for charging, and patrol in automatically rotating shifts.

Or have them near protests, and “accidentally” start killing people. When people get upset, cops will go “oops it was a malfunction. Too bad you can’t blame us for that. Because of, ya know, the malfunction. It totally malfunctioned. 100% wasn’t programmed to kill on sight, to break up the protest quickly. Nope, definitely a malfunction.”

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

That literally already happened. It was like a year ago. It caused minimal damage, but it was clearly just meant to be a “boop. Look what we can do if we want to” message.

I mean, the article points out that the lady in the headline isn’t the only one who has been affected; A dude was falsely detained by cops after they parked a facial recognition van on a street corner, and grabbed anyone who was flagged.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

Facial recognition uses a few key elements of the face to hone in on matches, and traditional makeup doesn’t obscure any of those areas. In order to fool facial recognition, the goal is often to avoid face detection in the first place; Asymmetry, large contrasting colors, obscuring one (or both) eyes, hiding the oval head shape and jawline, and rhinestones (which sparkle and reflect light nearly randomly, making videos more confusing) seem to work well. But as neural nets improve, they also get harder to fool, so what works for one system may not work for every system.

CV Dazzle (originally inspired by dazzle camouflage used on some warships) is a makeup style that tries to fool the most popular facial recognition systems.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/52d8f120-e959-481d-ac06-49b718824128.jpeg

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/c93a006b-8d63-4e49-9733-a5509cbf5f8f.jpeg

Note that those tend to obscure the bridge of the nose, the brow line, the jawline, etc… Because those are key identification areas for facial recognition.

Realistically, the transfer would likely need to be set up ahead of time via the account holder. For instance, my password manager has a function to allow me to designate a beneficiary. But importantly, that beneficiary assignment must come from my account before I die. If I die without designating a beneficiary, there’s nothing my family can do to gain access to my password vault. Only the accounts I have designated will be able to gain access.

In other words, in order to falsely designate a beneficiary, they would already need access to my account. And at that point, they wouldn’t need to deal with death certificates and beneficiaries, because they already have access to my account.

1,000 Harvard Students Walk Out of Commencement to Support 13 Seniors Barred from Graduation over Gaza (www.democracynow.org)

More than a thousand Harvard students walked out of their commencement ceremony yesterday to support 13 undergraduates who were barred from graduating after they participated in the Gaza solidarity encampment in Harvard Yard....

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

Your info is out of date. The university has since stated that the 13 students are on academic probation for a year, and will be ineligible for graduation. In short, they’re being held back for at least a full year.

And realistically, the uni is likely waiting for the fervor to die down, before they find some bogus reason to kick all 13 out entirely. But they know they can’t do that while the spotlight is on them, so they’re barring the 13 from graduating while they wait for people to lose interest.

The tail lights are actually the stupidest thing at night though. The tail lights are the entire bar across the back. Then when the driver brakes, the bar goes out. It’s reversed from what people would expect from brake lights. Typically, people would expect more lights when the car is braking, not less.

Worth noting that the “they thought they were Hamas” part is… Well… Not correct. WCK coordinated the shipment directly with the IDF. The IDF knew exactly where the trucks were, and what they were carrying. And then the IDF bombed them anyways, because they’re manufacturing a famine to further the genocide. And allowing food aid to enter would disrupt their planned famine.

Bombing the trucks was a message for any other groups that may have considered sending humanitarian aid: “Try to help Palestinians, and we’ll kill you. Even if we know who you are, and you clear it with us ahead of time. We’ll blame Hamas and get away with it, and your death will be meaningless.” And it worked… The truck bombings had a chilling effect on any future aid that was planned, because the IDF has shown that they can and will get away with it.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

And that’s why democrat candidates struggle to maintain voters. There are very few lovable democrats, so they don’t get votes. With republicans, it doesn’t matter if the individual candidates are lovable, because they’ll get the party vote regardless.

I mean, cars can be demystified the same way computers can: By building and maintaining it yourself. Everyone is afraid to build their first computer, because it seems way too complicated and delicate. Then you actually build your first one, and go “oh hey this actually isn’t so bad after all.”

Yes, cars (especially modern cars) have a lot more difficult-to-build parts. But modern cars are also a lot like computers in the sense that you don’t need to know every single component on an GPU to be able to install one. You don’t need to be able to build a car part from scratch. The same way you can slot a GPU into a motherboard, you can just buy the entire car part preassembled and bolt it into place. The important part is learning what the different components do, so you can troubleshoot them.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

Yeah, it’s very similar to the “is loli porn unethical” debate. No victim, it could supposedly help reduce actual CSAM consumption, etc… But it’s icky so many people still think it should be illegal.

There are two big differences between AI and loli though. The first is that AI would supposedly be trained with CSAM to be able to generate it. An artist can create loli porn without actually using CSAM references. The second difference is that AI is much much easier for the layman to create. It doesn’t take years of practice to be able to create passable porn. Anyone with a decent GPU can spin up a local instance, and be generating within a few hours.

In my mind, the former difference is much more impactful than the latter. AI becoming easier to access is likely inevitable, so combatting it now is likely only delaying the inevitable. But if that AI is trained on CSAM, it is inherently unethical to use.

Whether that makes the porn generated by it unethical by extension is still difficult to decide though, because if artists hate AI, then CSAM producers likely do too. Artists are worried AI will put them out of business, but then couldn’t the same be said about CSAM producers? If AI has the potential to run CSAM producers out of business, then it would be a net positive in the long term, even if the images being created in the short term are unethical.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please , (edited )

I wasn’t arguing about current laws. I was simply arguing about public perception, and whether the average person believes it should be illegal. There’s a difference between legality and ethicality. Something unethical can be legal, and something illegal can be ethical.

Weed is illegal, but public perception says it shouldn’t be.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

And that’s a good point! Luckily it’s still (usually) fairly easy to identify AI generated images. But as they get more advanced, that will likely become harder and harder to do.

Maybe some sort of required digital signatures for AI art would help; Something like a public encryption key in the metadata, that can’t be falsified after the fact. Anything without that known and trusted AI signature would by default be treated as the real deal.

But this would likely require large scale rewrites of existing image formats, if they could even support it at all. It’s the type of thing that would require people way smarter than myself. But even that feels like a bodged solution to a problem that only exists because people suck. And if it required registration with a certificate authority (like an HTTPS certificate does) then it would be a hurdle for local AI instances to jump through. Because they would need to get a trusted certificate before they could sign their images.

Here’s a reminder that most washing machines use a universal key, which you can buy online for like $5. You can just pop it open and hit the little “coin inserted” switch to make it think you paid.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

Yeah, laundromats are hard to beat, because your only real operating costs are bills and maintenance on the machines.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

I mean, the owner can choose to re-key it. But there are only a few manufacturers for them. Most laundromats use Speed Queen machines, for instance. And the manufacturer ships them with a single universal key, so the owner isn’t left juggling like forty different keys for a single laundromat. If every machine had a unique key, the owners would need to have a bunch of different keys just to service everything at the end of the day.

Yeah, keto got popular because many people lost a lot of weight doing it. And so they naturally attributed the weight loss to the lack of carbs. But in reality, the diet only works because it actually forces you to watch what you’re eating. When you have to think “does this have carbs or sugar” for every single snack, you suddenly snack a lot less. Because the overwhelming answer of “of course it fucking does, it’s a mass produced snack.” When your only options are “make something yourself instead of eating pre-packaged junk” or “don’t snack” a lot of people will opt to skip the snack.

Basically, keto works because by eliminating carbs you’re also eliminating snacking, and are actually forced to track what you eat. At the end of the day it’s just calories in<calories out.

I mean, she’s a public defender. He’s lucky she’s making any arguments at all. Most public defenders are so busy that they only have time to do the bare minimum “make sure all the paperwork is properly filed” effort. They don’t really have time to make long drawn out legal battles in court, because they have nine other cases to argue later that day. They also can’t lie in court because that’s an ethics violation. So she can’t just use the Shaggy “it wasn’t me” defense to try and convince a jury he didn’t do it.

If I had to take a guess, this argument is actually coming from him, and she’s basically making the argument to the best of her ability. I doubt a plea deal was offered, because they caught him red handed and it’s an extremely high profile case; The prosecutor is likely going to try and make an example out of him. So she likely didn’t have the opportunity to push him to take a plea deal. And she can’t mount a major legal battle. So this is her “fuck it, I guess we’ll ensure his legal rights are upheld” effort.

I mean, it all came to light because of a rape allegation. The investigation was what uncovered the entire thing, where they found tens of thousands of (potentially non-consensual) videos of their threesomes. And no, that number isn’t an exaggeration; Investigators found nearly 30k videos. So even the “consensual” part is dubious at best.

The lady who accused him of rape only consented because she thought it was going to be a threesome. Then Bridget backed out, so the lady said she wasn’t interested anymore. But Christian still showed up and had sex with her while she was drunk.

You may want to check out Baker Bettie’s Better Baking Book. It’s a book of base recipes. A base recipe is a very simple recipe which can be modified and added to relatively easily. Base recipes are popular with professional kitchens, because it gets the proportions where they need to be for the baking chemistry to work right. Then you can just add your own fluff on top of it.

What makes the Better Baking Book unique is that it’s written for beginners instead of professional kitchens, so it actually explains why you’re using certain ingredients, how you may be able to substitute those ingredients, and how differing from the recipe will affect the outcome.
