If you think about the brutality of nature, which we are mostly isolated from, then yeah, organisms in general do have to earn their right to life through overcoming and eating other organisms.

The nice thing about the society is that we don’t need to give a shit about that

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Which was the point of civilization. To isolate us from that hell.

SpaceCowboy ,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

Even in a civilization someone has to produce food so you’ll survive. Civilization doesn’t mean no one has to work.

If you do no work but because of civilization you still have food to eat, it means someone else is working to earn your living for you.

This bizarre meme implies work has no value, and was likely made by a wealthy university socialist that had everything paid for by their parents so doesn’t understand the value of work.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

“Damn, this argument I made up for OP really sucks! What’s even worse is the fanfiction I made up for them, woah Nelly!”

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

This meme does not state no one needs to work. It states you don’t need to earn your place among the living. You’ve already done so by virtue of being born. I think that is a noble goal for a society to uphold. Higher ideals are, of course, what separates us from the realm of animal urges. Once you begin to mix laws of the jungle back into society the point of our isolation from it is subverted. If we truly are the greatest Earth has to offer, surely we can figure so.

SpaceCowboy ,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

You can’t eat higher ideals.

Even Marie Antoinette wasn’t so disconnected from the peasants to say “let them eat higher ideals.”

Someone has to work so you can survive. If you don’t want to work, society will take care of you. You’ll still be living, but you aren’t earning it, someone else is earning it for you.

Sanctus , (edited )
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Once again, this is not saying society will take care of you and everyone will just sit on their bussies and no one will ever lift a finger. This is repealing the idea that you have to earn your stake to be considered human and alive in a world that has abstracted everything away to just getting funny paper. People will still farm and cultivate crops. There are people who want to do that now. Are you vehemently opposed to people just feeling and being accepted from birth? I for one think a society built on more welcoming foundations would see less crime and more work.

SpaceCowboy ,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

Sure there are people that want to farm. But are there people that want to want to deal with sewage? Why do you think plumbers earn more money than other trades?

I want to run a cafe instead of what I’m doing right now. I don’t want to be a waiter of wash dishes or anything like that. I just want to design the menus and decide on how it’s decorated. Is that the job I’ll have in a socialist utopia, or will I have to do a job I don’t want to do? What if there’s already too many cafes, or not enough people that want to be waiters or was dishes? I won’t have to do anything but I’ll still be provided for?

In the end there will always be people doing jobs they don’t particularly want to do. Someone’s gotta unclog the sewage when the elite of the socialist society plug the pipes with the overabundance of shit they spew out.

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

How about capitalism? How many MBAs does the world need? Marketing consultants? Advertising cosultants? IT consultants? Consultant consultants? There are countless jobs that serve the machine and no other purpose that benefits society. Somebody will do the necessary jobs. There are more incentives than you realize. For instance, what if I want more than my UBI pays me? Plumbing has entered the chat. The only reason you defend this system so hard as the epitome is because nobody has experienced anything else but this. Its scary I know, but there are more ways than one to exist, and every system has its trade-offs. But our social contract between our governments in clearly broken, we are clearly strung along on the whims of shareholders and capital. Say what you will, but I think we can do better than “those people deserve to starve son, they have no jobs.”

CooperRedArmyDog ,

Who here is saying “No one should work” no one except maybe the most high on their own farts anarchist is saying that. The end goal of marxism is “From each According to their abilities to each according to their needs” their will be work, The farm will be ploughed. THe difrence is all will be provided for.

SpaceCowboy ,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

And if I were to decide that I didn’t want to work according to my ability, I would still be provided for?

flashgnash ,

In no capitalist society that I know of will you be executed for not working - you have a right to life

What you don’t have the right to is someone else to provide for you if you don’t give anything back

That said I’m fairly sure with the amount of automation we have everyone should need to put in a whole lot less work than they do to keep society afloat

exocrinous ,

What you don’t have the right to is someone else to provide for you if you don’t give anything back

Yes you do. Lots of people are on disability benefits, unemployment, a pension, or are literal children. And those programs should be expanded to cover everyone who doesn’t work, not just those who can justify their existence to a government form.

flashgnash ,

In the case of someone who can’t work for one reason or another there’s obviously an exception because that’s not something they can help

Children do contribute to society by getting an education and having a childhood to develop into well adjusted adults who contribute later on,

Unemployment benefits presumably are for people actively searching for a job

The elderly have already contributed more than their fair share raising their children

Using the phrasing people who don’t work implies including people who are able but just don’t want to

exocrinous ,

There’s nobody like that. You’re talking about imaginary people. All human beings have a natural drive to do useful work.

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

What are you saying? That you wouldn’t give anything back if not for the threat of homelessness and starvation? I don’t need a threat to make the world a better place.

flashgnash ,

I’m sure I’d give something back but I’m also sure most of it wouldn’t be of much use to anyone else, I’d be working on stuff like mods, niche tools for myself that probably 3 people on earth would find useful, and stupid ideas for fun like some streamers get to

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Listen, I don’t think it’d be as disasterous for anyone with a passion. The people who would be fucked and have to adjust are the ones whose only goal is get money. Imo thats not a healthy way to be a human as it usually has a price tag of everyone else. Theres constant suffering every day and most of it is in the name of profits. Shit, my boss acts like it’d murder him to get me 10k more a year so I am not below the american median when in reality the company wouldn’t even count that as pocket change, I see the revenue and expenses every day. The sociopaths control and benefit from this system and you defend it. Its like a strange stockholm syndrome.

flashgnash , (edited )

Passions don’t necessary line up with something that’s beneficial to society is my point.

Absolutely the distribution of wealth at the moment is far from fair and I wish we could fix that, but I still think short of everything being automated even in a utopia where we do everything perfectly as a society people still have to do jobs they don’t want to because there are jobs noone wants to do that need doing

I highly doubt anyone has a passion for working in the service industry, cleaning up the messes kids make at school or collecting people’s rubbish but they’re jobs that need doing and people do them because they’re compensated for them

LillyPip ,

Less than two steps between that and eugenics, and one step between eugenics and genocide. We’ve seen and documented that. It’s a logical but sociopathic mentality.

Conversely, when we realise that we’re stronger together and act empathetically as a society, every one of us and all of society benefits. When we care for the least of us, crime goes down and we find geniuses who improve life for us all, who would otherwise die in anonymous poverty.

Living like barbarous animals – not rising above the ‘brutality of nature’, as you said – helps sociopaths who take advantage of our better nature to enrich themselves. Indeed, if we structure our society around that, as we have done lately, our society will devolve around the lowest common denominator (people like Musk or Trump).

We can and must do better than that.

exocrinous ,

Your comment would have hit much harder as a rejection of cruelty and advocacy for kindness if you haven’t thrown sociopaths under the bus. Most sociopaths are poor people, and they’re all disabled.

UckyBon ,

Are you a native American or one of those colonizers?

halcyoncmdr ,
@halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world avatar

That has nothing to do with the topic at hand, you’re just trying to change the topic, and think that somehow calling out America’s history of colonization (by not only Britain mind you) is some sort of “gotcha” moment.

But I’ll bite. Personally, European descent. But many native friends and family members, and lots of time volunteering with local native non-profits and political campaigns. Which is likely more than 99% of Americans could say about any sort of native support.

I’m on the west coast, you know where all the natives were forced to move. Many of the “illegals” the bigots complain about in my area are actually Native Americans or have native ancestry.

But none of that is about the topic at hand, food and Britain’s lack of utilizing the spices they spent so much effort to get.

AlpacaChariot ,

halcyoncmdr ,

A major part of that is obviously potatoes, which originated in South America. They were brought back to Europe through colonization of the Americas. Just like tomatoes and corn.

For spices though, looking up a few recipes to check it looks like usually thyme, rosemary, and parsley are used, which are Mediterranean and Western Eurasia. So maybe… My memory of English colonialism and time-frames closer to home is more lacking.

Prunebutt ,

Dammit, forgot the potatoes.

If I took a guess, then thyme, rosemary and parsley have been brought to the country waay back when the british isles where being conquered instead of doing the conquering.

It's in everything, along with plenty of salt and cancer causing dyes and artificial flavoring. Even our locally sourced, home farm based meats and vegetables are laden with chemicals and virtually zero nutritional value because hardly anyone let's soil lie fallow, and doesn't use a tin of Miracle Grow and weed killer. I'm my specific area, you can't even find chicken feed that's nutritious for the birds and almost no one free-ranges. The closest you'll find in my area are a pig that's given table scraps in addition to feed, and no one knows what's in either chicken or hog feed, unless it's cracked corn, and well... You get it.

No lettuce rolls, though.

lightnegative , (edited )

I’m not even American but lol at calling triple distilled Irish whiskey less bland than bourbon.

Irish whiskey is like the lager of whiskeys, about as bland as it gets

John_McMurray ,

You guys don’t age your common bourbons long enough though.

bluewing ,

It depends on where the bourbon gets made. Very generally, the temperatures cycles vary a lot more more than in Great Britain. So the bourbon “ages” faster than Scotch or Irish whiskys. So bourbons have to be younger and that can make them somewhat sharper in flavor. Plus the requirement of using new oak barrels also cuts the time spent in the barrel.

John_McMurray ,

“Sharper” is one way to say “aged so little still smells of paint thinner” I guess. Find a bottle of say Alberta Premium or a good Canadian Rye whisky (or even Crown Royal, though that’s a lame barley whisky) and give a good sniff. There’s a huge difference to the bourbons unless you get spending

Irish whiskey? Triple pot stilled to strip out all the flavors? Dang near vodka for depth of flavor. (I jest - I do enjoy a good Irish whiskey myself).

Now bourbon is the drink of the gods. Rich deep complex flavors that fill your taste buds with joy. It’s so good the Scots and even the Irish use our used bourbon barrels to impart those complex flavors and taste to their whiskys.

MY_ANUS_IS_BLEEDING ,

Been to the US a few times. Your food tastes extremely average and the only difference to anywhere else is that it has about 3 times the kcals and half the nutrition. I’ve had heartburn and constipation virtually every time I’ve visited.

With opinions like that I’d be surprised if you’ve even left your own state, let alone the country.

American “beer” lol. Laughs in German.

Edit: Grumpy Muricans, your downvotes only prove my point!

IsThisAnAI ,

We do dopplebock far better here.

pimeys ,

But finding the actual great German beer, the blessed helles, is not super easy in US. People seem to think all these bocks are super common in Germany, but it’s actually helles what everybody drinks (and pils in the north). Helles is extremely hard to brew correctly, it requires a very specific temperature and pure ingredients.

I spent most of my vacation in US last year finding a good helles from a bar. I found one after many tries, and the closest I could get to a bavarian helles was in Weaverville, in Leveller Brewing Co. I went to thank the owner for this great beer, and he told me he studied brewing in Bavaria and brewing that beer took a lot of trial and error.

Edit: somebody soon comes to tell how easy it is to find helles in US. Yes, but it often doesn’t taste how it should. Or you get some old bottled stock of Augustiner that is not a same thing as fresh Augustiner in Munich.

IsThisAnAI ,

I’ve never once been in a town without a beer place within 20 minutes that has more selection than you could try in your entire life before dying of liver failure. Christ most grocery stores have at least an aisle dedicated to food selection.

This is entirely made up.

bluewing ,

Yeah, Prohibition killed all the beer we had and we did have good beer right up until then. And it’s been a long road back. Those large US breweries are still far more interested in cheap ingredients made cheaply.

But you can find good craft beers scattered amongst the bad craft beers if you look. And home brewing is maybe more popular in the US than Europe, but I’m not sure of that.

Tomato666 ,

You make a good point about prohibition, I guess that will have had a significant effect. Maybe there are more artisan spirits in the US now having been driven by people with secret stills making moonshine in that period. It’ll be interesting to see where you guys go with the relaxation of marijuana laws. Maybe people will be home breeding new strains.

bluewing ,

Oddly, moonshine and bathtub “gin” became quite the impetus for the popularity of cocktails, at least in the US. Since the added flavors tended to hide the rotgut taste of the illicit booze. And the loss of beer breweries had the effect of giving rise to ice cream parlors and soda fountains since saloons had to close. Plus as Minnesotan, I feel the need to apologize for the Volstead Act, as it became known, since Andrew Volstead was a Minnesota House of Representative and Chairman of the House Judicial Committee and was pretty instrumental in getting prohibition enacted. Scandinavian Protestantism ™ is not a good thing by in large.

Maeve ,

I've never had a decent American beer. PBR is the closest to decent I've ever had.

NoIWontPickaName ,

Depends what you are looking for.

I've had awesome stouts that were so stout they could double as a meal, and I've had island beers that were nice for a long hot afternoon of fishing or cooling down after out side work.

Tbf, im not a beer snob though and choose primarily based on activity and temperature of day.

Maeve , (edited )

I usually like Newcastle Summer, I'm not a fan of Stella. Blue Moon is acceptable. But since neither that nor Newcastle is sold as singles near me (and a 12 oz or pint not even once a week, at most twice a month is the most I'll drink at one time), that usually means Heineken. I've 2 pint cans in the fridge now (I prefer bottles), but that is because I'm the last month, a neighbor has brought me three, in return for small favors. And the first was lovely, to wash* down a nice potato poon. It balances the sweetness nicely.

ETA: tbh I hate stouts, but I'm really not a beer drinker. When I drank liquors occasionally, I usually preferred a pricier tequila or single malt Scotch, and being on limited funds, that curbs that, nicely.

The only time I've ever had Irish whisky was in Bailey's, but if anyone can recommend a good Irish, I'll keep it in mind.

Mr_Blott ,

Newcastle Summer?

Beer that tastes like rain, wet sausage rolls and tracksuit armpits, I’m guessing

Prunebutt ,

Maeve ,

Thank you.

SwingingTheLamp ,

You’re really missing out! In my opinion, PBR is the best of the “cheap and shitty” tier of mass-produced beer that rednecks and poor college students drink to get smashed. It’s not good, exactly, but somehow nostalgic to me for drinking around a campfire. The U.S. has plenty of mass-produced beer that’s still mediocre, but better than PBR, and some that’s even pretty decent. It’s in the craft breweries that you’ll find the really great American beer, though.

Maeve ,

I've been to craft breweries and several tastings at various ones. I just didn't find much that agree with my palate, but as I said, I'm not a beer person, in general. My friend back home used to make a rather nice home brew. I believe he may have used molasses to some extent, but it's been a very long time ago, and most of my alcohol consumption was from home brewed corn or fruit and heavily distilled. Except my grandmother's fruit concoctions, consisting of preserves, jams, jellies and way too sweet wines. They still beat Boone's Farm, MD and Triple Peach, though.

SwingingTheLamp ,

Haha, okay, so as not-a-beer-person, I guess you’re not really missing out. Fair enough.

Maeve ,

No, but American beer is still nasty.

Lol, what? Also: it’s not about where the stuff came from but rather what the cuisine does with it. Italian or German cuisine doesn’t become south american all of a sudden cause of tomatoes and potatoes.

pyrflie , (edited )

Butter was a luxury prior to 150 years ago limited to a hard 20 mile radius of milk farms. 10 if you wanted it to taste good.

Sugar was similarly limited due to either trade with the far east or the establishment of colonies in the west indies. Russia didn’t have a sugar source until sugar beets in the late 1850s.

Most regional European cuisines were developed in the 1700s with the introduction of Tomatoes and Potatoes from the Americas. Both of the spices called out were still luxuries at the time.

I don’t like either candidate, but I’ll be damned if trump is going to be president again and project 2025 comes to fruition.

systemglitch ,

You guys could just overthrow the government, kill the elite and start fresh. Please do that.

perishthethought OP ,

systemglitch ,

Look out your window and let me know.

perishthethought OP ,

Oh OK. So this is just “extremists are extreme”. Gotcha.

Downvote me all you want, ppl.

JayJay ,

Yeah, it seems so, i personally don’t like our system either, but that would have to come down to a vote from the people to tear it down and start over. People dont get to force the issue like trump and many extremists, and apparently, like this other person wants.

WitchHazel ,

How do I vote trump out in a state that WILL go to him? Does me vote matter in that situation? Should I just lie down and take being banned from the public sphere? You act like violence isn’t already being committed by the right and ignored by ineffectual liberals like you who think that being polite is important when lives are at stake.

These people deserve justice for the harm they’ve caused, and the justice system will not bring it to those in such powerful positions. I merely am positing that justice will only be wrought by our own hands. The fact that is only possible through their deaths isn’t my fault, nor does it concern me in the slightest if these mindless ghouls get hurt. If you make change impossible, you make your death inevitable.

And if my vote did matter, Biden has done nothing to improve my life and the lives of people like me but to allow us to serve in the imperialist death machine that is the military. That is disgusting. Everything I wanted from him, abortion and the border have been dismantled in the same way I expected Trump to, and actually resulted in MORE migrant children being caged. Neoliberalism will kill both me and this planet before I reach 50, and you’re acting like some stupid fucking voting will prevent people with guns from doing what you’re shaming leftists for advocating. It should worry you that Biden has so thoroughly failed so many people that they prefer a violent and tumultuous revolution to your dystopian hellscape future you call “progress”.

JayJay ,

Sooooo, basically what trump tried, but its somehow okay because you said it?

systemglitch ,

By that logic it’s never okay. Some of th best changes in history grew from overthrowing government.

Rinox ,

Generally speaking what follows a violent revolution is usually a few decades of war, poverty and tyranny.

It’s quite unlikely that you’ll be better off in the 2-3 following decades than when you started. After that, it’s anyone’s guess. You might be better off or worse off, depending on the ability of the new government

frippa , (edited )
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

By that logic all of America should still be partitioned between the Spanish, British, Portuguese and French.

I understand this is an hyperbole, but still, let’s take for example the French revolution: sure Napoleon crowned himself emperor and in the end left France in a worst state than before, but he gave the whole world some important advancements that in many (often subtle) ways still reverberate today:

for example, his monetary policies are the reason we have 1,2,5,10,20,50 of a given currency and the respective cents, and not an arbitrary system of fractions (old European coinage could get absurd, I suggest who’s interested to go on numista.com or a similar site and check for yourself) .

He helped introducing the concept of separation of church and state to the general public (not much considerated before).

He helped the nascent industrialist class to emerge and impose itself, gradually stamping out the remains of feudalism from Europe.

He advanced history in many ways I can’t even start to mention.

Let’s take another example, you can think what you want of the Soviet Union and I can agree to various criticisms, but living in the Russian empire in the 1900s (even before WW1) was like living 3 centuries in the past. People lived in misery and died young, servitude was abolished only 50 years before.

The Communists took a country that barely surpassed feudalism (in the cities) and gave basic dignities to its citizens, arriving to compete, militarily and economically, with the strongest superpower in history.

Can be argued it degenerated after Lenin’s death, but it’s undeniable that, even under stalin’s time, life was magnitudinally better than even 30 years prior (and to be fair that’s an enormously low bar)

Rinox ,

I didn’t say that all revolutions are bad. It’s usually a mixed bag, some good, some bad.

What I was saying is that violent revolutions and civil wars, like all wars, usually bring death, destruction and poverty for the normal everyday people. So if you are expecting better living conditions right after a revolution, you are either so poor that anything is better or you better be on the short list of elites that will get to grab power and rebuild the country, otherwise you are going to suffer. Maybe your kids will be better off… Maybe.

And yes, there are also independence wars, but those are different from civil wars. The US is independent, Americans don’t consider themselves being occupied by a foreign entity.

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

There are cases in which the status quo kills way more in the long term than a revolution would in the short term, I agree with you that a war, expecially a civil war fought expecially on national soil brings misery and destruction to the nation, but it is sometimes a necessary evil in the short term in order to avoid a way bigger evil in the long run. To make another Italian example, the fascist regime killed hundreds of thousands of people, 120.000 innocents died only in Lybia during the deportation of the cyrenaican people, that’s less than all of the deaths in the Italian Civil War!

didn’t say that all revolutions are bad. It’s usually a mixed bag, some good, some bad

I think we agree on this one, I thought you meant revolution was inherently evil. Better to clarify and argument further nevertheless, For posterity. Peace.

JayJay ,

I would say a peaceful change by vote of the people (not politicians) would be a better way than violent revolution. Violent revolution can be justified, but it will end up hurting many people and destabilizing a country. War from internal and external parties would be garunteed. Peaceful revolution is not an easy nor even plausable outcome, but it would harm far fewer people.

Im curious: How does not voting show you wish for revolution? My view is that I’d rather vote for someone who is working within the system (corrupt and broken though it may be) than someone who wants to tear it down and install a dictatorship. Not voting just means you’re complicit and signals you don’t prefer one over the other. I don’t like either, but i definitely have a preference.

systemglitch ,

Tough question I don’t have an answer for. Both established parties are corrupt beyond measure, pandering to the same group behind closed doors.

I think a better analogy would be, “a building has many exits available, but only 2 emergency exits. During an emergency, you ‘must’ use the emergency exits… But do you really?”

If the USA population decided to ignore the democrats or republicans, as a whole, and focus their votes on one of the remaining four parties, then you lot would see a different party being elected. Easier said than done. I know. And I’m not blaming any of the USA voting population for this dichotomy.

Obligatory fuck Nintendo, but don’t make too much light out of this lawsuit. They’re aren’t attacking the legality of emulation itself (which has a ton of precedent defending it) but are instead trying to convince a judge that Yuzu is a DRM circumvention tool.

If they land a technologically-inept judge that believes decryption itself constitutes circumvention regardless of how it’s used in the bigger picture, there’s a decent chance the argument might have some teeth. Or, because there’s no precedent for this, the lawsuit will drag on until Yuzu runs out of money and is forced to settle.

If it’s within your financial means, please donate to Yuzu. If they lose this lawsuit, the precedent it sets will open up other emulators that work with encrypted ROMs (e.g. Dolphin and Ryujinx) to similar lawsuits.

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

I think it’s about money, just like with Vanced. Google didn’t care for the hacked YouTube client before the team behind the mod tried to make money off of it. Now Yuzu did the same and Nintendo went after them.

If it’s within your financial means, please donate to Yuzu

Are you absolutely joking? I’m not donating one cent to those clowns. I hate Nintendo and corporations with a passion, but Yuzu coding their emulator to support an un-release game – and making money off of it – is obviously the most illegal shit. There’s literally no way for emulating a pre-release game to be legal – how would you legally obtain a ROM of that? They did this to themselves. They’re going to way of Bowser rather than other emulators.

Edit: Oh would you look at that, looks like Yuzu settled and is paying Nintendo 2.4 million dollars. That’s weird for a “”“non-profit open source project”“” to do.

MazonnaCara89 , (edited )
@MazonnaCara89@lemmy.ml avatar

They did nothing to support totk before the release date as even stated in this article from pcgamers

The emulation teams have forbidden all discussion of running Tears of the Kingdom from their Discord servers—Yuzu only allows vague discussion of the contents of the game, but requests for help or discussion of performance quickly earns chatters a deleted message and a warning or ban. To avoid being involved with pirated material, the emulator developers have vowed, at least publicly, not to release updates targeting issues with Tears of the Kingdom. “We are waiting for the game to release, so that members of our team can each legally dump their own copies of the game,”

The game only happened to run without any work by them (and it’s understandable after 6 years of development and the various documentation already available for the switch’s tegra chip) and this is happening every time a new game for the switch is released.

someguy3 ,

Fuck flippers.

ChickenLadyLovesLife ,

I found one local house for $70K that had a huge number of problems, like cracks and rust showing through the stucco exterior, broken fascia boards, upstairs that was only 6’ high, stairway that came up into the upstairs bathroom etc. etc. (the house dated from around 1850 or so). I passed on it, but I was surprised to see that it sold just a few days later, and even more surprised when it was re-listed less than two months later for $195K. I went to see it again and it was a classic lipstick-on-a-pig flip: just grey paint and those nasty grey fake wood vinyl floor planks everywhere. I’ve never been so flat out offended by a flip before - and the thing sold almost immediately for the asking price. I feel sorry for the schmucks who bought that thing, although they probably turned around and sold it for $300K.

Yeah, a picture from that angle might help attract potential buyers, but it would be immediately visible when you come in for an inspection. I’m pretty sure there’s more effective and less obvious ways to screw your buyers.

Apples to apples, those vans are more expensive and larger. At what point does it become ok to have an open bed? There are valid pros and cons in every choice being talked about, here.

Eufalconimorph ,

At what point does it become ok to have an open bed?

When the distance from the back of the truck to the front of the bed is longer than the distance from the back of the cab to the front of the truck, it turns from a Sport Utility Truck into a Pickup Truck. Typically that’s around when the bed gets big enough to haul a sheet of plywood or drywall safely.

Of course it’s OK to have an SUT instead of a pickup truck, just not as useful for construction work.

1847953620 ,

So edgy.

What if you rest the wood on the tailgate, or lean it on the roof, then tie it down, is it no longer safe?

What if you’re the driver for a small crew that picks them up every morning then uses the smaller bed for supply runs?

Just lemmy grasping at straws to put everyone into a box based on incomplete information.

Eufalconimorph ,

I said nothing about safety. I just said it should be considered a different class of vehicle if it meets certain characteristics. SUTs are great for camping, for hauling surf boards & kayaks (possibly with a rack) and tow just as well as pickups. They don’t have a full-size bed, so they’re worse at most jobs, though the larger cab does mean they can carry more workers at once. It’s a trade-off: get worse at most work-related tasks, get better at personal tasks and thus reach a wider market.

1847953620 ,

Typically that’s around when the bed gets big enough to haul a sheet of plywood or drywall safely.

Always felt that was a weak reasoning. Are there no recipe books from before the war that you can refer to and try to recreate?

rationing during WW2

Not just during but long after (well into the 1950s). People generally don’t understand that Britain literally bankrupted herself holding out against Germany, then got to watch as the former Axis powers rebounded faster than they did.

Less we bankrupted ourselves and more the Americans bankrupted us. America put a lot of effort in the early 20th century to undermining the influence of the BE and was far more concerned with building up west Germany as a barrier to the Soviets than they did with building back up allies like the UK and France.
