How it works is that once you start getting these Server Side Ads (SSA), Youtube will create a sort of queue of videos in place of your usual video, with the first few being ads that can’t be skipped and have a red bar (not yellow) and in the end you’ll get your video. They are not literally part of the original video stream, they are separate streams that get injected as if they were the original video. It’s called SSAP, and I’ve been experiencing it from the last weekend. In the meantime, they’ve pretty much broken their player to implement this.

Ublock Origin has released a temporary fix yesterday here

Alternatively, you can use this extension to redirect from YouTube videos to piped.video I used it, it works very well, can’t guarantee for much more.

edit: fixed wording

Rinox ,

It’s not literally part of the video, exactly because of what you describe. They are separate streams that get injected into the player before the normal video. You can’t skip them or interact with them in any way (pretty sure it also breaks any purchase links etc). Piped or Invidious don’t have them, ytdl also doesn’t download them.

As of now, afaik, you won’t see them if your account wasn’t selected for the experiment, if you are in incognito mode (with uBO on) or if you have uBlock Origin (and other adblockers) off (you’ll see the normal ads and then the video).

Otherwise, apply uBO new script if you get them

More like

Nobody wants to do business with unstable nazis people

Plenty of businesses ready and willing to do business with stable (and rich) Nazis, dictators and slavers. Look at the line of people and businesses more than ready to make deals with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, China, etc

If you are rich and have a stable government, there’s no amount of human rights violations and genocides stopping corrupt fuckers from trying to make deals with you and profit.

Rinox ,

I don’t think you need to add any taxes. If the area is attractive enough to warrant a higher density redevelopment, just unlock it and it will get done.

I mean, if you are a developer and you know for certain there’s a lot of interest in a certain area and you know for certain that you could buy that big single family lot and make a 3-5 story building instead with 10-20 apartments, you’d be crazy not to offer double the market rate to get it and develop it as fast as possible.

Just need to change the law to allow redevelopment of single family areas into medium density.

Rinox ,

From 11 to 19 is always kind of weird in many languages. In Italian you go from essentially saying “one-ten” “two-ten”…“six-ten” to “ten-seven” “ten-eight” “ten-nine”. Then it goes in like in English. Why? No reason ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Rinox ,

China isn’t communist. China is a capitalist dictatorship with one man at the top, a few people taking decisions and raking in all the profits and everyone else wage slaving away. Tell me what it reminds you

Rinox ,

I have an automatic, drove a manual for years and a few times a year I still need to drive a manual, but I’ve never really done this, aside from maybe a couple times the very first time I got my automatic.

What usually happens is I stall the manual once or twice forgetting to press the clutch while decelerating. Not that often anyways.

But maybe it’s cause I learned on a manual, not an automatic

Rinox ,

Yes in the sense that all communist countries are state capitalism, no in the sense that it betrays the very ideology of communism.

If you think about it it’s very much the same structure as a big business, with the “boss” at the very top, the party being the shareholders and executives swallowing all the profits and at the bottom are all the workers getting the shaft.

The main differences with normal capitalism is that the state here has an army, police and a full monopoly, so the party can literally do whatever they want to whoever they want within China. They don’t play by the rules, they write the rules, ie, a capitalist wet dream.

Rinox ,

Maybe ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Rinox ,

It felt like we, as a society, had so much optimism for the world that was to come. So, if anything, I think that’s what I’m mostly nostalgic for. I was so excited to grow up in that world. Damn.

As with anything regarding the past, there’s a lot of rose-tinted glasses going on. Be careful what you wish for

Rinox ,

If only that. This is much more invasive

Rinox ,

I think only the player is blocked, and would be shown in the screenshots as a black rectangle

Rinox ,

It’s not a bug, it’s 110% intentional and not only for the windows default screenshot utility. The whole pipeline is built in such a way to prevent you from taking screenshots or capturing video of a DRM protected player.

Even in Linux, afaik, you can’t simply take screenshots or record a Netflix movie playing in the browser. Yes there are ways, but not with the default applications (you need to break the encryption)

Rinox ,

Iirc type 2 is acquired diabetes, type 1 is the one you get from birth, so yes.

Rinox ,

Doesn’t matter, the point is that, if it starts with “is” then you automatically know it’s a boolean.

Rinox ,

Anything discontinued should stop being protected by copyright law, and the manufacturer should be forced to give every piece of information they have on that product.

Rinox ,

The most funny thing about this is when Google AI will pick this as the true answer to the creation of Dune

Rinox ,

In more official settings they would also use the year “ab Urbe condita”, meaning “since the City’s founding” (city being Rome).

59BC should be around 694 aUc if my numbers are right.

Rinox ,

Have you read the report?

I haven’t read it all, but from reading like a couple paragraphs it says that the Chinese government is making mass incarcerations with accusations of extremism and terrorism, while these terms are not well defined and it appears that they are only targeting Muslims for their religion. Furthermore in these jails it appears that the Chinese government is doing things like forced injections, forcing people to take pills and other classics like torture, waterboarding and rape, invasive gynecological exams etc.

Inmates are forbidden to pray with guards making rounds at night to ensure compliance, being forbidden to speak their own language or practice anything from their culture. Prominent scholars, artists and intellectuals are being incarcerated, people are forbidden to leave the region or to receive or send money from the outside.

If it were Israel doing this, and they are doing this, you’d call it genocide, wouldn’t you?

Or doesn’t Uyghurstan have the same right to exist as Palestine?

Zelensky: 'Our partners fear that Russia will lose this war' (kyivindependent.com)

President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Ukraine’s partners “are afraid of Russia losing the war” and would like Kyiv “to win in such a way that Russia does not lose,” Zelensky said in a meeting with journalists attended by the Kyiv Independent....

Rinox ,

Call It like it is, Nazis can’t be trusted, and Putin is a Nazi

Rinox ,

I’m not sure the old new one is that much better than the new new one tbh. I always found it to be bloated af, especially with time it got worse and worse. Also, why are both sites so slow?

Rinox ,

Also a gf. And a friend. Triple flag

Rinox ,

I mean, I wouldn’t mind a car with “only” 200km range, but that can charge up to full in just 5 minutes. I use my car just for work 99% of the time anyway, the times I need to go somewhere further away I can easily stop midway to charge, get a coffee in the meantime and then be on my way.

Rinox ,

Good luck making an AI you are 100% sure is PG rated.

Btw someone already put chatgpt+whisper in a kid’s plushie/toy, saw it on an old WAN show. The lag is tremendous though

Rinox ,

On Pixel (but probably also other phones) you can press and hold the power button to summon the assistant. Put chatgpt or whatever as your assistant and you have a rabbit equivalent with one button summon.

Rinox ,

Iirc is to attract birds so it can infect the bird and use it to reproduce. After the bird has eaten the parasite out of the snail’s eyeballs, the snail can often regenerate and keep living as usual. This is what I recall from a YouTube video at least ¯_(ツ)_/¯

'Horrific' violence at UCLA after counter-protesters attack pro-Palestinian camp (www.bbc.com)

Violence erupted at the University of California, Los Angeles after pro-Israeli counter-demonstrators attacked a pro-Palestinian campus encampment. Bubbling tensions on the campus boiled over following the alleged breach of a “buffer zone” between the rival groups.

Rinox ,

Yeah, what’s wrong with killing people? As long as you have an excuse that’s good enough for you, you should always be able to kill as many people as you can. /s

Rinox ,

Except Vesuvius, which looks like a volcano, but in 79CE erupted violently sending lave, magma and molten rocks several kilometers away, exactly like the stuffy nose you described. It completely destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum, burying them for thousands of years.

https://feddit.it/pictrs/image/70042ff1-488e-4568-9bf9-01243817681a.webp

Still nothing when compared to the destruction that the “Campi Flegrei” brought 37’000 years ago, completely burying a huge section of the Campanian coastline.

https://feddit.it/pictrs/image/b57d94d8-8615-4e51-b857-fe4698abd6af.webp

Rinox ,

Yeah, it pretty much blew out that whole section of coastline, that big hole is called a “caldera”. It’s still active btw, you can go and check it out if you want. Look for Solfatara di Pozzuoli.

You can also look at the Greek island of Santorini, where the whole western and central part of the island was blown off during the bronze age iirc. Historians speculate the eruption, earthquake and tsunamis caused by the event could have partially influenced the collapse of the Minoan civilization, the rise of the Mycenaeans, turmoil in Egypt and possibly even the fall of the Chinese empire due to a global winter. Crazy stuff

Rinox ,

I mean, we could even try to extract how this works and use it to create a biological processor. Or a myriad of other stuff. This is actually a really interesting discovery

Rinox ,

Yup, the T. rex is just extinct, chickens are the closest thing genetically speaking (or one of the closest, I’m not sure).

Same reason why humans don’t actually descend from monkeys, both monkeys and humans descend instead from a common ancestor that no longer exists. This is why, IMO, Digimon could be a better representation of evolution than Pokémon, since one Digimon can evolve into many different forms, so that kitten could become a fridge, but also a dragon or a knight with cannons, depending on the evolutionary line.

Then again, I doubt any of these were intended as a realistic portrayal of anything at all, least of all the theory of evolution.

Rinox ,

In Italian Digimon it’s called Digievolution

Rinox ,

If you have time then try working out and doing sports. It sounds asinine, but I’ve found that exerting yourself increases your levels of energy in the long term. Even something small, a little bit at a time will be greatly beneficial. Also try doing it with someone else and try having an active social life that will motivate you to go out of the house and stop spending all the evening alone on the couch watching YouTube (which is really detrimental, ask me how I know it).

Like the Romans said “mens sana in corpore sano” (you need a healthy body to have a healthy mind)

Rinox ,

It’s not that it runs the risk, it’s a guarantee. There’s no situation in which another more leftist party gaining a significant number of votes doesn’t mean handing the presidency over to the republican party. Fptp is a really bad system.

Rinox ,

The problem is the magnitude, but yeah, even before 2020 Google was becoming shit and being overrun by shitty blogspam trying to sell you stuff with articles clearly written by machines. The only difference is that it was easier to spot and harder to do. But they did it anyway

Rinox ,

While I agree that intellectual property has been abused over and over, especially in the last two decades, we need to remember the reason why patents became a thing, and that reason was to promote open research and cooperation.

Without patents the only tool businesses had to protect and exploit their inventions and discoveries was secrecy, which creates a terrible environment for research, full of espionage and subterfuge and without a library of human inventions and research ready for anyone to take and build upon.

It’s somewhat of a necessary evil, a carrot in order to incentivize businesses and individuals to share their research and their inventions, instead of keeping them to themselves in fear of someone else stealing them. It does have issues though, especially regarding the lack of a “fair” use of the monopoly the patent grants for it’s duration.

And, again, I’m talking about patents. Copyright is a whole other can of worms, way worse in some ways.

Would you teach your kids how to pirate?

My gf and I have had discussions about teaching morals to kids. In that vein, I asked myself, would I teach piracy to my kids? Yes, it’s technically illegal and carries inherent risks. But so does teenage sex carry the risks of teenage pregnancy, and so we have an obligation to children to teach them how to practice safe sex....

Rinox ,

It’s like sex education and education about drugs and alcohol. It’s necessary information for kids, even if you don’t want them to do it, because if they don’t know anything about those things, they’ll end up with lots of problems.

Teach them how, why and why not, be honest and then trust them to make an informed decision on their own

Rinox ,

It’s not really an issue. 99.9% of the time the passengers will already be safe and the pedestrian is the one at risk. The only time I see this being an issue is if the car is already out of control, but at that point there’s little anyone can do.

I mean, what’s the situation where a car can’t break but has enough control where it HAS to kill a pedestrian in order to save the passengers?

Rinox ,

Will it pull a Tesla and switch off the autopilot seconds before an accident?

Rinox ,

That’s a problem with the software. The passengers in the car were never at risk and the car could have stopped at any time, the issue was that the car didn’t know what was happening. This situation wouldn’t have engaged the autopilot in the way we are discussing.

As an aside, if what you said is true, people at Tesla should be in jail. WTF

Rinox ,

Which has the exact same issues, but they are presented as “ecosystem” so it’s ok

Rinox ,

The same reason why Iran sent drones and missiles while warning Israel that they were going to do that beforehand. Symbolic act without causing an actual escalation.

Rinox ,

Dunno, but 13 hours is not that much really. I can drive for more than 13 hours straight, in Italy, without going in circles, staying on the highway, traveling between two region capitals and not counting the islands. And it’s Italy, not exactly the biggest country in the world. Or even in Europe.

PS: in August that’s 24hrs

Rinox ,

On the other hand, without the invention of lenses we wouldn’t have most of our science and technology. No microscope, no telescope, no microchips, no precision engineering. So many things today are possible only because we could enhance our shitty vision with lenses

Rinox ,

So you are telling me that we should give them housing, a stable and guaranteed job and a secure income in line with the nation average? Man, I might start thinking about stealing millions, worst it can happen, I’m better off than now. /s

Rinox ,

I mean, when you stop and think about it, you’ll realize that it’s probably all a giant mafia, and she crossed the wrong people the wrong way. There’s no way on earth that someone can disappear 10% of a country’s GDP without anyone knowing.

There’s certainly corruption all the way to the top. Everything is controlled by one party, including the banks. Everyone knew for certain

Rinox ,

40k a year is very much a different amount in various parts of the world, and even of the US. Regardless, if accommodation is already taken care of, it’s not a bad amount in lots of places (just maybe not NYC or SF)
