It’s not possible to produce the amount of meat needed to feed our massive population while treating animals humanely.

There are really two options to deal with this:

  1. Most humans in the world become vegan – sounds great but it’s not gonna happen
  2. Reduce our population to sustainable numbers (by eliminating the driver of the population explosion, i.e. fossil energy) – maybe also not gonna happen

Edit: What (do I think) will happen? We’ll continue as we are now as hundreds of billions of animals are tortured until our civilization collapses. This will happen because we were all brought up under a state and told that defending ourselves, our communities, our animals, is wrong and illegal.

johannesvanderwhales ,

False dichotomy here. Americans could certainly reduce their intake of meat without going full vegan. Regulations could be created to treat livestock more humanely without completely eliminating factory farming, which yes would increase prices, which would probably also reduce meat consumption somewhat. Also population growth within the US has dropped off quite a bit and is projected to further decline.

On this topic, I am optimistic on how generative AI has made us collectively more negative to shallow content. Be it lazy copypaste journalism with some phrases swapped or school testing schemes based on regurgitating facts rather than understanding, none of which have value and both of which displace work with value, we have basically tolerated it.

But now that a rock with some current run through it can pass those tests and do that journalism, we are demanding better.

Fingers crossed it causes some positive in the mess.

We have to deal now with periods of crap content, until people will fatigue and became aware of the shitty ai things made for quick bucks.

The problem is that because the production costs of the crap content will now be near zero, it will always be profitable to create as long as there is just a fraction of the consumerbase falling for it.

It is never going to stop on its own because of lack of demand, it is going to continue and something drastic will have to be thought up to create an internet where everything isn’t buried in AI generated crap.

    One of the better tooling ideas I’ve heard is from a friend of mine who does board game development. One of the problems is going back and forth with the artist over what’s wanted. With an AI image generator, he can get something along the right lines, and then take it to the artist as an example.

    uienia ,

    The problem is that quantity is no longer going to be a problem, it can be created for virtually nothing, so basically just a tiny profit will be enough to warrant it in the outlook of those responsible for it.

    Now endless shallow spam, which slightly resembles something worthwhile, can be generated in an instant, because it will generate a meagre profit. It is already happening on the book market for example. Amazon is flooded with AI generated books, and proper authors are simply buried in the mountains of generated spam which is at best nonsensical but at worst genuinely misinforming.

    Perhaps consumers will become more discerning in the future (although to be honest not much in the present suggests that will be the outcome), but it will never remove the increasing mountains of spam, because it will be produced for as long as just a fraction of people buy into it. And this will be applicable to everything on the internet. If we thought commercialisation and spam was bad now, we have seen nothing at all yet.

    So even with proper discernment, it will take a lot of time and effort just to locate something earnest and worthwhile in the generated spam.

    They also messed up Nokia before killing Windows Phone. Nokia’s Symbian used to be a serious competition to android.

    TeNppa ,

    Nokia’s Symbian was shit and you’re the only person I’ve ever heard saying anything positive about it. To be a serious competitor to Android or IOS you need to have as much apps on the store and Symbian had very few.

    mukt ,
    @mukt@lemmy.ml avatar

    I am saying that it was probably sabotaged by Microsoft leaning leadership at Nokia.

    Also, despite being Linux core, Android itself was shit in the beginning. Gingerbread (G) was the first edition that won favour with buyers. Hardly any takers of android for its first six versions (A to F). Not even the techy nerds were buying Eclairs.

    Around 20 years ago, iOS used to outclass everything by a big margin. Android, Nokia/Symbian, RIM, etc were closer to each other than to Apple. And now …

    As of 2024, fresh competition to android is needed.

    daq ,

    Symbian was a fantastic OS, but it never competed with Android in any meaningful way. Nokia was already circling the drain when Microsoft bought them and first Windows phones (Lumias) were fucking awesome. And then fucking moron Nadella killed Windows Phone.

    balp ,

    The Windows Lumina phone was a battery-draining buggy version with a smaller screen than the Linux version N9, When they turned that into Windows (Lumina 800), they had to use a smaller screen and less memory as Windows couldn’t handle the hardware as MeeGo could.

    daq ,

    N9 was perfect in every way except that it was abandoned. I miss that phone every day I use Android

    balp ,

    Yet, that is the real Linux phone killer move by the former, Microsoft CEO for Nokia. Also the move that killed Nokia phones.

    mukt ,
    @mukt@lemmy.ml avatar

    When Microsoft bought Nokia, Steve Balmer (ex-Microsoft) was at Nokia helm. His work with Nokia was so much in the interest of Microsoft that he was rewarded with head chair of Microsoft not much time later.

    daq ,

    You mean Elop? Ballmer was MS CEO when MS bought Nokia, but they were doing fairly well in the beginning. Fucking moron Nadella took over and killed Windows mobile. Despite publically admitting later that it was a mistake, he’s still a fucking moron.

    Natanael ,

    And MeeGo as well, which was a more modern base and even better UX than Windows Mobile in my opinion.

    ChickenLadyLovesLife ,

    I’m a mobile developer and back around 2011 I was hoping like hell that Windows Phone would make it big. When you look at Xcode (for iOS), Eclipse (for Android and Blackberry) and MS Visual Studio (for Windows Mobile and Windows Phone) for mobile development, there was absolutely no comparison - it was Visual Studio all the fucking way. But Microsoft just decided to completely shit the bed and give up on mobile altogether. I still don’t get it.

    Around that time WebOS (under Palm) had the Mojo SDK, it was pretty slick.

    I loved it, it’s a shame that phone failed to find it’s market. Luckily Matias Duarte eventually incorporated the best parts into android. Swipe navigation is almost identical to webos

    gmtom ,

    Honestly windows phone was sabotaged by both 3rd party developers who refused to port their apps to the platform, despite how easy it became AND did things like kill their own APIs to stop other developers from developing ports themselves, as well as by Google by not allowing their services on the platform.

    The hardware was honestly top notch, even compared to my current S21 ultra. They were fairly pro consumer, having removable batteries, SD card slots and a 3.5mm jack right up until the end, even after the other big manufacturers removed them. And after the major update (the WP 8.1 update iirc) the software was really nice, intutive and pretty. I miss arranging and resising tiles, I miss having my pictures or album artworks showing up on the homescreen and I still use the Microsoft launcher on android to get the app drawer like I had on my WP.

    Jesus_666 ,

    Windows Phone was mostly sabotaged by first-party developers. Microsoft has a history of abandoning their mobile phone OSes after very short periods of time and nobody trusted them not to do it again. As a result few app developers bought into the ecosystem and smartphone enthusiasts told their friends not to get Windows phones, causing modest sales, causing Microsoft to immediately drop the platform.

    As everyone expected them to.

    Suburbanl3g3nd ,

    What launcher are you using currently? I have Launcher 10 but I’m always looking for a new WP10 styled one to use

    Zerush , (edited )
    @Zerush@lemmy.ml avatar

    Yes, it was a shame, and it only died mainly due to the lack of available apps in the store and bad management. MS took too long to release it with Android and iOS already well established in the market… It was also the OS that resisted the longest in the Pwn2Own Hacking Contest in these years. While Android and iOS went down in less than a minute, before the hackers could access the data, on WindowsPhone they hit their teeth on a rock, after half an hour they could only access the cookies.

    Cube6392 ,

    Microsoft fucked up in the smartphone market so many different ways. The misunderstood the UX paradigms that would work, refused to change when Apple had obviously stolen their lunch money, stayed the bad course they were on when Android stole Apple’s lunch money and then didn’t even notice it has slammed Microsoft into some lockers because that’s how little windows phone mattered. By the time Microsoft did like… Actual good market research and focus testing to build an actual good mobile os (maximally ironically based on their Zune UX which had failed previously because Microsoft was infinitely too slow to the mobile audio market) it was exactly as you said. The perfect mobile OS just 5 years too late to matter. More than anything what they needed to do was prove the apps you actually needed were present on their store and pay OEMs money to make windows phones to establish market share to make up for having a lower count of apps. They failed to do so. Now their actually genuinely brilliant mobile os only exists as a series of android apps that no one really gives a shit about.

    Same here. I generally prefer Lemmy at this point but I absolutely hate how everything is politics on here. Even the meme communities are half the time just shitty talking points in a meme template.

    So much negativity all the time and all of it is essentially useless because virtually everyone on Lemmy is at least progressive already. So the comments are just a bunch of people agreeing with each other how terrible everything is.

    It’s really exhausting.

    PilferJynx ,

    There’s a sweet spot between concentration and dilution. I hope lemmy can self regulate that ratio.

    0ops ,

    Yeah 196 and the star trek communities are consistently positive and fun, and I’m not even a trekkie (yet). Those two places are singlehandedly keeping lemmy from being too negative to be worth it for me

    SturgiesYrFase ,
    @SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml avatar

    That’s a good segue! One place here that I’ve noticed has way less toxicity than reddit is the Linux communities. I found the reddit Linux subs had a load of gatekeeping, people tended more towards going: if you can’t figure out how to use a search engine you probably shouldn’t be using Linux.
    And then complaining that the general public doesn’t want to use Linux.

    Here on lemmy I see a lot more people hopping in a thread to say things like: here’s the solution to your beginners issue, and here’s how to look it up. If you have more issues just shoot me a reply and I’ll gladly give you any help I can.

    It’s really refreshing to be honest.

    Otherwise I very much agree there’s a lot of doom posting everywhere else.

    gravitas_deficiency ,

    As a software engineer and someone who’s been into that shit from a young age, it’s such a nice change. Reminds me of some of the old BBS forums from the 90s. The positive and welcoming atmosphere is such an improvement compared to a lot of the analogous Reddit subs.

    Creating positive environments for more junior people to gain expertise in is one of the things I’ve become somewhat passionate about over the course of my career, and it’s great to see the space we have here being exactly that much of the time.

    @SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml avatar

    It’s really good to see. When I first got started I was lucky enough to live with someone well versed in the ins and outs of linux setup and troubleshooting. I couldn’t imagine getting started, running into a roadblock that I couldn’t surmount (there’s been a few times searching forums ended up with one exact match to my issue, and the only response to the person’s question was OP just saying “figured it out” and closing the issue) and having everyone I ask just tell me to figure it out myself…

    The best way to escape the doomer shit like you did on Reddit is to create equivalent Lemmy communities. For example, I personally wanted to see more Bingus memes on Lemmy, so I created !bingus so that the Fediverse could be graced with the presence of Bingus.

    If you liked r/furry_irl and r/polandball on Reddit, and want to see that kind of stuff on Lemmy, all you gotta do is hit that little “create community” button and replicate all your favorite escapes from political nonsense and Linux memes (tho I must admit Linux memes are really cool).

    Yeah, the Lemmy communities you create may not get as big as their Reddit counterparts, but that’s just kinda how it works around here.

    Varyk OP ,

    Food holidays are my favorite holidays, and also because of Jon Stewart, I irrationally appreciate the abundance of Jewish holidays.

    Which Jewish holidays should I celebrate?

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    Well the problem is that Passover has the best food, but it’s also celebrating a genocide, so I don’t really have a good recommendation.

    Purim maybe? It’s mildly less stupid than the others since it’s actually based on something that really happened? But it’s still based on an arranged marriage, so even that’s kind of fucked up. I don’t know. The Bible is ridiculous.

    Varyk OP ,

    Dang, yea, the Bible is a terrible mess.

    klemptor ,
    @klemptor@startrek.website avatar

    The food is the best part of any holiday, to be fair.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    I agree. Unfortunately, with Jewish holidays, you have to sit through what feels like about 10 hours of prayers in Hebrew before you get to the food.

    Which especially sucks when you’re a hungry kid who doesn’t understand Hebrew.

    InputZero ,

    I have the best Jewish friends. They’re not strict Jewish, they adapt a lot of the traditions to suit themselves. For example any of the food heavy holiday’s they invite their non-Jewish friends over but do most of the religious stuff before we show up. So for me, I get to visit with friends, eat pretty good food (I’ve learned what to avoid like the unleavened bread), and help them celebrate something that’s important to them. They make no expectation for us to actually participate, just respect that they are. It’s a good time.

    I feel for their kids though, they have to do the 10 hour thing.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    Damn, lucky you not having to sit through the boring shit. Because yeah, the food is great!

    klemptor ,
    @klemptor@startrek.website avatar

    Yep. Half my family is Jewish, half is Catholic. My dad (Jewish atheist) made me sit through a really long seder once and afterward said he forgot how boring they are. And also didn’t warn me about the bitter herbs lol. Next time we went to a seder it was wayyy more streamlined.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    You can use parsley as ‘bitter herbs,’ which is what we did. Not the most pleasant thing to eat, but not exactly unpalatable. I’ve heard of some people using celery. That feels like cheating.

    itsnicodegallo ,

    Celery leaves specifically would probably be what they meant. You can actually use them as a substitute for parsley in cooking!

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    I think that may be what the idea was, but they definitely meant just regular celery because the conversation, which had happened a couple of times with guests when I was a kid, was along the lines of “why are you using parsley? Celery is so much nicer!”

    gamermanh ,
    @gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    Oh maybe that’s what it was. On a related note the girl I dated has a sister that was a substitute teacher at our high school at the time. She was 21 and would buy us booze and she also played strip poker with my friends and me. Took my buddy’s virginity. Fun times!

    Hamantaschen are amazing and I’ll make them year round, no one can stop me!

    I also make the donuts for Hanukkah for my mother

    At least we’re out of the years where we were making like a gross of them. That was exhausting.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    Every year my mother buys jelly donuts for us when we come to visit for Hanukkah and every year, we all tell her that we don’t like jelly donuts.

    At least she doesn’t try to cook them. She’s an awful cook. And she doesn’t understand food. She makes latkes in the oven (not fried) the day before we come, freezes them, then defrosts them when we come over. And we eat two and pretend we like them and cover them with enough sour cream so that we can’t taste them.

    We used to go home and make our own another day, but they’re also kind of a pain in the ass to make, so we just deal with shitty latkes once a year now.

    Her matzoh ball soup is fine, but it’s very hard to fuck that up.

    PsychedSy ,

    That’s fucking adorable though. Getting old is weird.

    RebekahWSD ,

    Oh, the homemade donuts, all 122 of them were well received! As well as the hamantaschen. But when you’re making a gross of them, it just takes a long time.

    I like latkes, but it was one of them few holiday cooking things that I did not get pushed into doing as a kid (and now several decades later still do for the family)

    Challah, hamantaschen, donuts…mostly all the dessert things, I guess. And the charoset! There’s more, but I forget until I get the call and start baking for her.

    PsychedSy ,

    Lmao. Does her cooking make you nostalgic?

    My mom regrets that she didn’t learn all of her mother’s cajun recipes. I regret it, too.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    It does not. She’s a much better cook than when I was a kid while still being a terrible cook. But at least her idea of offering me dinner is no longer a defrosted turkey burger every night.

    There were also the dreaded dinnertime words of my childhood: “This was an experiment.”

    Because the “experiment” was usually something like, “the recipe called for two cups of sugar and that’s too much sugar, so I substituted cottage cheese.”

    PsychedSy ,

    That sounds horrendous. Kind of adorable, though.
