Desktop, of course, simply for upgradability and better thermal management.

I have an AM5 system, so I’ll be able to upgrade not only my graphics card, but my CPU as well, and have a modern machine that’ll last me well into the 2030s. These days you can’t even upgrade your RAM on most laptops.

There’s also the fact that I don’t really feel the need to game on the go, and modern smartphones have fulfilled my need to have a portable computer for everything else. When I did own a gaming laptop, I paid way too much money for it, and the battery didn’t even last an hour playing something as basic as The Sims, so it had to be plugged in all the time like a desktop anyway. Within 4 years the GPU was too old to run anything at a reasonable framerate. Never buying a gaming laptop again.

Psythik ,

When does this scenario ever come up? I’ve never had the file save dialog try to default to OneDrive.

Psythik ,

Yeah seriously that’s an ungodly amount of RAM for a PC of this vintage. My old WinMe machine had 128MB.

(And an 800Mhz PIII. I later added a GeForce 4 MX 4000 so I could actually play games at more than 15-20 FPS. It was my first graphics card purchase ever. Also upgraded to XP cause Me would BSoD so often that I never got a chance to do a proper shutdown at the end of the day. When the machine crashed, I was done for the day.)

With the recent issues of transgender people in sports, why don’t we move some sports over to a weight-class system?

Obviously this won’t work for all sports, but things like football, track, soccer, it would allow for de-gendered team, even allowing athletes with the skills but not the genetically-endowed physical attributes to have a place to play....

Psythik ,

Get rid of gendered sports. Next, legalize steroids for women; keep them illegal for men. Solves part of the problem, but I have no idea how trans people would fit into this scenario, though.

Psythik ,

Millennials aren’t having kids, silly. We can’t afford rent, let alone a child.

Psythik ,

You guys are completing campaigns?

Psythik ,

For once the Supreme Court makes the right call. Broken clocks and whatnot.

Psythik ,

I simply don’t own a webcam. Last time I actually had a use for one was sometime around 2003. That said, I’m still fucked because I made the mistake of buying a phone that uses the camera as the light sensor.

Psythik ,

Where are people finding these stereotypical office jobs that allow for so much downtime? In every office I’ve worked in, the calls and tickets would just keep coming in non-stop. I was always too busy to have time to look like I’m busy.

Used to put up with this back when Hulu was free. Adblockers weren’t as sophisticated then, so I had to watch 2 minutes of a black screen every commercial break. Still better than watching ads.

Psythik ,

People have actually made it through Starfield? I tried so hard, but couldn’t make it past 20 hours (which isn’t a lot for a Bethesda RPG). The story is just so damn BORING.

Psythik ,

Good to know. I don’t even know about these “starborn” people. Never made it that far.

Psythik ,

Couldn’t think of anything other than an insult a 7-year-old would come up with, huh?

Psythik ,

What the hell is a “nob”

Psythik ,

Lemmy seems to hate any new technology, I’ve noticed.

Personally I’ve found GPT to be extremely useful as a search engine replacement, especially the implementations that cite their sources. That way you can actually fact check instead of wondering if it’s a hallucination. It helps me rely on reddit a lot less to find answers. I love that it’s being integrated with Windows. Makes finding files a lot easier, even easier than using Everything search.

Lemmy also hates crypto. They call it a scam, despite the fact that it’s now being traded on the stock market (BTC and soon to be ETH). I turned $12k into $36k, just by buying small amounts of BTC every paycheck since COVID started. I buy everything with crypto; there are Visa debit cards you can use to spend it. Crypto gave me enough financial wiggle room that I no longer worry about losing my job. Yet it’s a “scam”. Give me a fucking break.

Lemmy hates HDR. Every time I mention the reason why I haven’t switched to Linux yet is because of poor HDR support in KDE, I get ridiculed. “Why would you want your monitor brighter and more colorful? Mine’s bright and colorful enough”, failing to realize just how much more realistic “brighter and more colorful” makes an image appear. With a proper 1000 nit OLED display, it feels more like looking out of a window than staring at a monitor. Like going from a black and white to color TV. One of those things that you can’t go back on once you get used to it.

And although not a new technology, per se don’t even get me started on how much Lemmy hates cars. But I feel like I’ve ranted on long enough so I’m just going to stop talking here before my inbox blows up.

Psythik ,

The same argument you made against crypto can also be made for USD: it only holds value cause people say it does. I rather go with a currency that isn’t subject to inflation. Furthermore, if you don’t like the energy usage, then don’t buy a Proof of Work coin. Buy a Proof of Stake coin instead, like ETH, and rest easy knowing that you’re not harming the environment.

But hey, if you want to be poor for the rest of your life, that’s on you. I choose to break free from USD so that I actually have a chance at a future.

HDR has been around for over a decade now. Linux devs are just lazy. It is in fact, a critical piece of tech once you get used to it. Like I said, from going from B&W to a color TV. HDR monitors are not expensive. Even the cheapest Walmart brands have HDR now.

HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware (www.tomshardware.com)

On May 26, a user on HP’s support forums reported that a forced, automatic BIOS update had bricked their HP ProBook 455 G7 into an unusable state. Subsequently, other users have joined the thread to sound off about experiencing the same issue....

Psythik ,

Since when does Windows Update touch the BIOS? How is that even possible?

Psythik ,

Because you have ADHD.

Psythik ,

Just because a sizable part of the population has it, doesn’t make it any less legitimate. So sick and tired of the stigma around ADHD. I’m tired of defending it

Psythik , (edited )

Three words: High Dynamic Range.

HDR is a tacked on feature in KDE that barely works. In Windows 11, it’s a set and forget thing. SDR gets mapped to HDR space, so you don’t have to constantly toggle it on and off when switching between content, like you have to do in other OSes. You can even upgrade SDR videos and games to true HDR, even if they don’t have native support. It legit makes content look more realistic.

And if you have a newer GPU, there’s also AI upscaling, which is great for watching HD and SD content on a 4K display. Pretty sure you can’t do that* at all in Linux, at least not in real-time.

But if you have an SDR monitor and/or an older GPU, none of this matters to you. Which in that case, there’s no reason for you to use Windows ever. But if your gear is newer, Linux is too outdated for you.

I’ll check back in 5 years. Maybe 2029 will finally be the year I ditch Microsoft products for good.

Psythik ,

Those specs are pretty close to the gaming PC I built in 2013. 4th Gen i5 (4670K), 16GB DDR3 1600, and a 770 (later upgraded to a 1070 in 2016). Paid $1100 for it and used it for a decade; even in 2023 I could hit 60 FPS at 1080p in most new titles (with medium-low settings). If I didn’t buy a 4K 120Hz OLED, I’d still be gaming on that PC today.

Psythik ,

LOL yep that was my VR system for many years (haven’t even hooked up the good old Vive to my new rig yet). Alyx ran amazingly smooth at 1.2x supersampling with little to no reprojection. It surprised me too.

Psythik ,

Ryzen 7700X, 32GB DDR5 6000, 4TB NVME, and a 4090. By far the most high-end rig I’ve ever built (and probably ever will).

I would have never been able to build such a powerful machine, but long story short I bought as much Bitcoin as I could while working my $14/hr job during COVID and it paid off. Almost embarrassed to admit this, given how anti-crypto Lemmy is. But hey, allowed me to build the PC of my dreams. I feel guilty for bragging.

Psythik ,

Since when do cats only live 15 years? I’ve never had one die on me before its early 20s.

Psythik ,

The biggest fallacy with this argument is that a longer lifespan will just mean more years of being old and miserable, when the fact of the matter is that a major part of living longer includes feeling younger at an older age.

Psythik ,

AMD’s auto updater does this. But it pops up and closes instantly so I have no idea if it’s actually working or just crashing.

Psythik ,

Yeah seriously. This is 1998 all over again.

Psythik , (edited )

Lame. WearOS is laggy garbage. My Watch 2 Active was way more responsive and functional than my Watch 3 4 Classic is. Animations stutter constantly and half the time it doesn’t even react to my touch. Bring back Tizen.

Psythik ,

They’re useful for people with sleep issues, and people who are trying to get fit or lose weight. The sleep and fitness tracking features are great for statistic nerds like me. Or people with a heart condition who don’t want to carry a bulky ECG machine with them everywhere. But if you fall into neither of those categories, I can understand why you would say such a thing.

I don’t go anywhere without my smartwatch. Only time I take it off is to shower and charge. Owning one has improved my life for the better. For example, I found out that I have sleep apnea because of my watch. And I can track whether or not my workouts are burning muscle or fat, and adjust accordingly.

Psythik ,

Similar thing happened to me. Bought a bunch of watch faces too, only to discover that none of them would transfer over when I got a new watch.

Psythik ,

Boys, I tried. But I couldn’t get HDR working properly in KDE, the kernel kept randomly locking up to the point where even REISUB didn’t do anything, and 95% of my GPU settings were missing from the Nvidia X Server app and I couldn’t get most of them restored.

Linux users look at me like I’m insane when I ask where the RTX Video Enhancement and 3D settings are. Half the reason why I bought an RTX GPU was for the video enhancement features like SDR to HDR conversion and AI upscaling, yet these features simply don’t exist in Linux. And when it comes to the 3D settings, “just change the graphics settings in-game”, I’ve seen people say, failing to realize that the vast majority of games are missing several graphics settings that are in the 3D settings screen. I go into that menu and make tweaks before I play anything. It’s a make-or-break feature for me.

I’m sorry but Linux still hasn’t caught up enough with Windows yet in the gaming and HDR realm for me to commit to an OS change. But if you have an AMD GPU and don’t have an HDR display, I’m sure it’s a wonderful gaming experience for you. I’ll check back again in another 5 years.

Psythik ,

As someone who trashed my credit the moment I turned 18, this whole article is bizarre to me. I’m in my 30s now and I still have to pay for (nearly) everything, up front, in full (even cars). I can only use private landlords because no apartment community will approve me. If I can’t afford something, I can’t buy it. Amazon is the only entity that trusts me with a payment plan, because they’re the only ones who don’t check your credit score. As long as you pay on time, they don’t care; so I always have. That’s the only reason why I could afford a TV.

Psythik ,

To be fair, you should fact check everything you read on the internet, no matter the source (though I admit that’s getting more difficult in this era of shitty search engines). AI can be a very powerful knowledge-acquiring tool if you take everything it tells you with a grain of salt, just like with everything else.

This is one of the reasons why I only use AI implementations that cite their sources (edit: not Google’s), cause you can just check the source it used and see for yourself how much is accurate, and how much is hallucinated bullshit. Hell, I’ve had AI cite an AI generated webpage as its source on far too many occasions.

Going back to what I said at the start, have you ever read an article or watched a video on a subject you’re knowledgeable about, just for fun to count the number of inaccuracies in the content? Real eye-opening shit. Even before the age of AI language models, misinformation was everywhere online.

Psythik ,

This is just straight-up slander. I’ve been using Firefox since 1.0PR (so for 20 years now). It was a very rare occasion when a website wouldn’t function properly, and almost never would a website completely break. I haven’t had a single issue with a website in Firefox for over 5 years now. I would appreciate it if you could post some examples of some websites that “simply won’t work with it”, because I simply don’t believe you.

Mobile is fine too. I have a bad habit of not closing tabs. It’s gotten so bad that the tab count number is just the infinity symbol on my phone. Still don’t have any slowdown issues on a Fold 3. Didn’t have any on my OnePlus 6T, either, nor my LG G2, nor my Galaxy S3. Quit making shit up just to have an excuse to stick with a shitty browser.

Psythik ,

Might have to do with the fact that Firefox was the dominant browser for quite awhile until Chrome arrived on the scene.

Psythik ,

Ah yes, anything institutional or governmental tends to behind on the times when it comes to browser compatibility. Good point.

I remember back when I tried to get assistance from my local government; the application form didn’t work unless you had IE6 (a browser that hasn’t been supported since Windows XP), in 2012.

Psythik ,

You’ve seriously never been there? It’s a staple of internet porn, along with the porntubes like XVideos and PornHub.

If you can’t find it anywhere else, you can find it on rule34.paheal. Only downside is that it’s mostly pictures/drawings. There are some videos but they tend to be short animations.

Psythik ,

Bruh this is one of the most well-known porn sites in existence. Don’t pretend like you’ve never heard of it. (You might be one of today’s lucky 10,000, I suppose.)

Psythik ,

iPhone batteries are small in general. My GF’s iPhone se (don’t ask me which gen) barely lasted half a day, and took hours to charge. So a couple of years ago I bought her a Z Flip 3 for her birthday because all the girls in the Korean shows she watches had that phone at the time. Now her battery actually lasts a full day, and the phone charges to full in 45 minutes.

Psythik ,

I’m just going to assume that you’re right because I know nothing about Apple devices and their capabilities.

Psythik ,

Fine with me; can’t get HDR working in KDE, so I need a good excuse to give up and go back to Windows 11.

Psythik ,

It’s so nice to see Comic Sans actually being used for its intended purpose.

Psythik ,

Firefox finally got HDR support, so now I have zero reason to use a Chromium-Based browser anymore. Kept Ungoogled Chromium around just for streaming video; uninstalled it yesterday.

Psythik ,

IDK but I just noticed it a few days ago when I was suddenly blinded by every video, lol (I turned on the setting in my GPU that converts SDR videos to HDR. It never worked in Firefox until just now).

Psythik ,

I miss Sky Mall so badly.

These days there’s nothing to do on a plane except play on your phone, and you can already do that literally anywhere else.
