Oh, I didn’t realize it was Make Insane Proclamations Day. In that case, I could become the richest person in the world if everyone else would just give me $1000.

herrcaptain ,

I’m still stuck on Notion. I keep looking for OSS alternatives but nothing I’ve tried has all the features I want.

herrcaptain ,

You’re getting downvoted here, but your anecdotal evidence matches my own. This is how I set my own schedule by choice. I get my “real” work done when I work from home, while the 2 in-office days are mostly spent in meetings, training other staff, and stuff that’s easier to do in person (hardware troubleshooting).

I get that this isn’t the case for everyone though, and many people would be more productive predominantly working from home.

herrcaptain ,

Yeah, having to split your gear up between two workplaces gets exhausting. For a long time I was a self-employed contractor primarily working for one company and I’d never have the right tool or part where I needed it. I now work full-time for that company and most of the gear stays in one place and is a lot more manageable. Plus, I set up a co-management agreement with an IT company that is literally our upstairs neighbor so if there’s a hardware problem that needs to be fixed in a hurry on a day I’m working from home I can just escalate the ticket to them instead of driving into the office.

But yeah, there’s absolutely no one size fits all approach to every workplace or specific job. I’ve been pushing for more flexibility there at my office for other roles because of that.

Given their infamous quality issues, robot guessing at building a car sounds about right.

I respect your consideration of the wojaks involved.

He’s almost definitely going to call someone a pedo again.

My God, just imagine the state of their computers.

Just like when white men came to the Americas and brought over diseases that the locals had no resistance against, the same is going to apply to whatever they’re using for computers. With no cultural foundation for the dangers of the internet, I bet every device in their community is already a part of a botnet and they’ve slowed to a crawl from crypto-mining malware.

herrcaptain ,

Yeah, this sounds like Ken M style pranking. Just playing the fool for some laughs. No one gets hurt, and some people might get a fun story out of it. This is what pranks are supposed to be.

herrcaptain ,

Thank you! I don’t think I’d seen all of those. This one has always been my fave:

herrcaptain ,

Absolutely! He’s just got this special sort of naivety that I find hilarious.

herrcaptain ,

I haven’t seen anything new in years. This one has to be at least a good 5 to 10 years old, as I think it may have been among the first I’d ever seen.

herrcaptain ,

To give this dude credit, from the rest of the quote in the article it sounds like he’s genuinely standing up against this sort of hate, and I expect it’s at a very tangible personal cost. I find it almost unbelievable that anyone who genuinely opposes hate of a sort that’s become a part of the absolute fabric of modern conservatism could still be a Republican, but apparently this dude is the exception. I hope he has the sense to get out now, but I’ll take what genuine progress I can get given I’ve largely written off most conservatives as a lost cause.

herrcaptain ,

Generally I’d agree, but the guy being quoted here isn’t the candidate in question. From what we know in the article he isn’t gay himself (though it’s certainly possible), nor does it mention anything about people he personally knows being gay. Given only the context of the article, it sounds like he’s genuinely just standing up for gay folks despite what his party overwhelmingly preaches. If that’s indeed the case I think he deserves credit. And like I said, I hope this leads him toward realizing that his party is a lost cause for genuinely compassionate people and that he should take this opportunity to jump ship.

herrcaptain ,

I completely agree - the party is absolutely wretched on a fundamental level and needs to be voted out of relevance. Like I replied to another comment here, however, it sounds like the guy being quoted here (not the gay Republican candidate) is just some guy speaking out against the hate in his party. From the limited context given in the article, he’s not doing it because of anyone in his personal life (though that could turn out to be the case). There’s obviously some cognitive dissonance there for him to think he’s going to change their minds, but I give him credit for even trying.

herrcaptain ,

Yeah, I did a double-take when I got to the part about expected wage increases for 2014. I suspect it’s much worse now, and was interested to see what Forbes was printing about that as at least these days they’re notorious for posting stuff with an anti-labour focus. I can’t imagine they’d post an article like this these days.

That said, I’m sure this article is more relevant than ever now and it’s a damn travesty that this is what the labour market has come to since the 70s/80s.

I’m on the executive team for a small business that my family bought almost two years ago. Many of us had worked there for years beforehand and absolutely weren’t paid what we were worth. As soon as we took over, we started to raise wages across the board (other than sales, who are our own little 1% due to the structure we inherited). Wages are still far from where we’d like them to be, but we’re trying our best with the resources at hand while we navigate these first few years of ownership. Shit’s not easy for a lot of small businesses and I get that many small business owners are outright taking advantage of their staff. We actively try not to (granted, in the Marxist sense we inherently are) but I realize that most of our staff deserve more than we can currently afford to pay them.

herrcaptain ,

Doctors on X? Of course they’re endorsing drugs - they’re currently high on MDMA.

herrcaptain ,

It looks like eligibility is limited to permanent residents. I can’t imagine this would help that much in this case? Someone already living there already has a leg up on finding a job (especially, as the article states, the issue with enlistment is already-high employment).

I’d think they’d have better luck opening this up to non-residents in a French Foreign Legion sort of approach. It seems like a much better value-proposition to someone from an economically-disadvantaged country, especially if it opens the door to AUS citizenship. This veers pretty close to the Starship Troopers “service guarantees citizenship” and as such I’m not saying they should do this - just that I wonder if they considered it if they’re having that much trouble reaching enlistment targets.

herrcaptain ,

Right? Though just imagine if routers ran Windows 11. They’d need 8 GB of RAM, phone home constantly, and have ads on the admin dashboard. Also, shoehorned in AI.

I probably shouldn’t post this. Don’t want to give them ideas.

herrcaptain ,

Right? I’m tired of my admin dashboard being a wall of plugin advertisements (especially from plugins I already pay for).

herrcaptain ,

Presumably because we let them by continuing to use their products. It’s definitely bullshit though - every time I log into a site I managed my dashboard is littered with notification banners. Most are legit notifications (albeit there should be a proper log for that), but the actual ads for plugins are maddening.

It seems like the consensus of this thread is that the name isn’t holding it back. That was my thinking going into it, but the article makes some very valid points such as the name (being related to a sexual and sometimes derogatory word) making it a non-starter in some organizations.

I have it installed on all our computers at work for basic image editing, but we’re a small business and never gave it much thought. I can absolutely see it being problematic in a school setting, however. More to the point, Adobe has ably demonstrated: get them hooked on your software in school and you’ll dominate the market. Imagine if kids had been learning GIMP instead of Photoshop all these years.

Anyway, I’ve got no dog in this fight. Just pointing out what I see as a valid point in the article.

Also, I like their original name possibility of IMP much better. The mascot could have been a cute little imp instead of … whatever it is now.

    herrcaptain ,

    Great article, but:

“A user-friendly distribution like Ubuntu can be an excellent choice for individuals wary of privacy and ethical issues surrounding AI,” says Taylor. “It provides a robust and user-friendly environment that minimizes the tracking and data collection you’d typically encounter with macOS or Windows.”

It’s been quite a few years since I used desktop Ubuntu, but I remember the Unity DE back then being not so user-friendly, at least for someone coming from the Windows paradigm. I’ve heard (but could be misinformed) that it’s gotten even more opinionated over the years. Something like Mint is likely to be a better option for a first-time user.

Also, I wish the article had mentioned Proton. It states that you may have to be willing to abandon certain games, but that’s far from the reality these days. At least through Steam nearly everything works right out of the box just by enabling Proton.

    herrcaptain ,

One of us! One of us! One of us!

For real though, good on ya. It takes a little getting used to, but is so worth it in the long run to not have to fight against the profit-driven whims of a megacorp. It’s also so much more customizable if you want to put together a really specific workflow for yourself.

    herrcaptain ,

Yeah, I hated KDE for like a decade but tried it again last year and was blown away. I can’t imagine I’ll switch off of it for a very long time.

And yeah, I always forget about competitive games as they’re so not my thing.

18+ What are the differences between the 'base' of various Linux distributions?

I’ve been using linux desktop for a year or so now. One noteable thing i keep seeing is that one person will say I dont like XYZ distrobution because of its base. But I am still a little unsure what is meant by it. I am assuming the main difference between each base is the choice of package management(?). But what other...

    herrcaptain ,

Great comment, but something I’d disagree on:

As an example, Mint is built on the Ubuntu base, Bunsen is built on Debian, etc. These are often called flavors as they’re not considered distros but rather something built on top of a distro.

From my understanding, those would generally still be referred to as distros in their own right. I’ve always understood a flavour to be a variant of a specific distro. For example, kubuntu is the KDE flavour of Ubuntu.

    herrcaptain ,

It looks like that takes care of the worst of the initial bugs, at least those that I experienced. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this game develops from here, especially now that the developer is unexpectedly rich after just the first day of sales. It sounds like he already had a great track record of listening to his community during the pre-release alpha testing, so that’s encouraging.

    herrcaptain ,

Yeah, I’ve been burned a few times but things like this and Rimworld (back when it was still EA) redeem the concept of early access for me.

    herrcaptain ,

You’re a person of good taste! 7 days to die is the go-to co-op game in my friend group, and my wife and I are big fans of The Forest (still haven’t gotten the sequel but I hear it’s great).

As for bad early access games, I literally have a category in my Steam library called “mistakes” where they live so I can hide their shame.

    herrcaptain ,

Okay, this got me curious. From the wikipedia article on viruses:

Viruses are considered by some biologists to be a life form, because they carry genetic material, reproduce, and evolve through natural selection, although they lack the key characteristics, such as cell structure, that are generally considered necessary criteria for defining life. Because they possess some but not all such qualities, viruses have been described as “organisms at the edge of life” and as replicators.

    herrcaptain ,

Thanks for posting this! While my knowledge of biology is quite limited, it’s always great to get an informed person’s take on an interesting topic.

    herrcaptain ,

I mean, let them try? I, for one, basically stopped buying new games (with the occasional exception for an indie dev). By the time the worst bugs are fixed, it’ll be on sale for 50% off anyway.

    herrcaptain ,

Good call mentioning pre-orders as well. I never did it back in the age of physical media, but there was at least a reason for it then. Now the only reason to do it is to get some bonus skins or other garbage with your buggy game.

    herrcaptain ,

People like this, by simply existing, make me feel like a real dumb piece of shit.

My breaks from real work are video games, TV, and this sort of shit posting we’ve got going on in this thread right here.

    herrcaptain ,

Yeah, it’s the same for me. Work is so I have the money I need to live, but free time is so much more valuable to me.

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

    @asklemmy

    herrcaptain ,

Yes! This is what I always associate with older folks texting or emailing. I use ellipses a fair bit for (my attempts at) comedic effect. Some older folks are using them on a whole different level, having this weird habit of ending sentences with them where most people would use a period or exclamation point. It can come off sounding very ominous.

    “Bill is coming over.”

Okay, cool. Have fun with Bill.

    “Bill is coming over …”

Grandpa, are you in trouble? What’s Bill going to do???

    herrcaptain ,

Well, I’m old-adjacent and I literally don’t think either of my grandpas so much as touched a cell phone or computer in their lives, but I get your point.

    herrcaptain ,

Yeah, for me (an elder millenial), I use them in the middle of a sentence in the form of a dramatic pause, or sometimes at the start of a sentence in specific cases. I’m not saying any of this is necessarily grammatically correct (or that the boomers are wrong for how they use them), but this is just what feels closest to regular speech to me.

    herrcaptain ,

Or - hear me out here - they take over the downed AWACS but leave it in the sea. You can’t use surface to air missiles on a plane below sea level. It’s functionally indestructible, and I see no conceivable faults in my plan.

    Checkmate, Russia.

    herrcaptain ,

Yes! You’ve got the spirit! This other guy with the audacity to think I hadn’t already considered that. And before anyone says depth charges, those only work on submarines. Surface to surface missiles? Good luck - the plane is under the surface.

    herrcaptain ,

    Or, apparently, most adults.

    herrcaptain ,

Dank memes and Linux shit posting keeps me on Lemmy.

    herrcaptain ,

Not in motion - shoot and scoot. Though you definitely have a point with loading. Back to the drawing board…
