(Meta) So many questions here are not open ended. Does anyone care?

There are a significant amount of questions here that do not follow the criteria in the sidebar, especially “1. Open-ended question” and “5. An actual topic of discussion”. It seems some folks want others to do research for them, or to troubleshoot some random issue....

fjordbasa OP ,

I agree regarding soapboxing. I think the posts that barely hide the fact they’re looking for reactions or agreement rather than discussion are probably the most grating and least constructive use of this community.

However, I think it remains to be seen if the community believes it’s something that needs to be addressed, and if so, if the mods are even conducive to changes. I do see the sidebar states “loosely moderated”. I am open to the possibility that I’m just being uptight and may just need to move on 😆

fjordbasa ,

You’ve probably figured this by now, OP, but the computers at your job are weird. Needing to install USB drivers for mouse and keyboard to work is not normal behavior for Windows. Like another person commented- check the BIOS settings.

fjordbasa ,

I agree. Definitely see more home hardware or cheap VPS related posts than work environment posts.

I miss palm OS. I think it had some undeniable jank but it also had great features and a bit of “charm”. I’m pretty sure I still remember most of the Graffiti alphabet!

fjordbasa ,

From the sidebar:

If your post meets the following criteria, it’s welcome here!

  1. Open-ended question
  1. Not offensive: at this point, we do not have the bandwidth to moderate overtly political discussions. Assume best intent and be excellent to each other.
  1. Not regarding using or support for Lemmy: context, see the list of support communities and tools for finding communities below
  1. Not ad nauseam inducing: please make sure it is a question that would be new to most members
  1. An actual topic of discussion

So… how is this an open ended question/topic for discussion?

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

I agree, I don’t think it’s unfounded, their immediate response was really tone deaf and I’ve yet to see them own up to that.

I’m a bit uncertain as to how I feel about the overall response. I don’t exactly fault people for getting publicly upset, and I don’t hate anyone for still watching. I personally don’t feel the need to broadcast my thoughts. I canceled my floatplane subscription and stopped watching LMG videos on YouTube, but I haven’t tried to get anyone else to stop- or really even talked about them much at all, save for this post

I love how cheerful TMBG can make just about anything sound, regardless of- or maybe BECAUSE of subject matter. Except for them, I wouldn’t expect someone singing something like “I destroyed the bond of friendship and respect Between the only people left who’d even look me in the eye” to make me wanna dance

So many great quotes from that last link

They played to a crowd of about 30 people and were the only English-speaking band on the bill. Flansburgh: “We thought it would be a hippie gathering kind of thing, but it was actually a meeting of Sandinistas.”

The show was free, and ran from 12pm to 5pm. It was one of the hottest days of the year in New York City. The band’s next show took place seven months later, in the middle of a heavy snowstorm.

I agree on Red Faction: Guerilla, it shows its age with a lot of bland empty spaces and rudimentary models, but the destruction is still a ton of fun

Note that this is a desktop application that should be run on your local desktop workstation, not on any server or containers. It will be able to connect to your server infrastructure from there.

Perhaps this is obvious to others but when I first read the post I thought this was similar to guacamole, but it appears to be more like Remote Desktop Manger or Royal TSX (not saying any of these are good or bad- just thought others might make the same assumption as me. )

Does anyone know of a decent replacement for Sunkist Diet Lemonade soda (which was taken off the shelves maybe a decade ago)?

It was a sparkling lemonade/soda with zero sugar or calories, but still tasted sweet enough and highly refreshing when cold. Would also accept a replacement for the non-diet version, which in my region of the US was unavailable even before they got rid of the diet version.

Yes, the webpage and the article make it clear- I was intending to poke fun at the missing word in the post title 😁

I’m inclined to agree. I don’t hate starfield, I really don’t. It may be obvious to others, but I’ve been trying to nail down why. I think a big part of it is the space travel. If a mission isn’t confined to a planet- hopefully an interesting planet, then you find yourself hopping from planet to planet- which means loading screens every time you jump- which kills any momentum that I personally feel. Sure you had to load if you fast traveled in fallout or elder scrolls, but you COULD walk across the map of the whole game if you really wanted to

I’m hesitant to link back to reddit, but I’m not sure there’s any community with quite the same amount of engagement/content yet. They have rules against number of views/plays to try to keep posts about lesser known stuff.

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

You can only pick 2 games from steam to play for the rest of your life, what games are they? (sh.itjust.works)

I have a large library of steam games, but yet always come back to Garry mod and ravensfield. I keep coming back for the modded content and every other game is excellent, don’t get me wrong. But a lot of big games like RD2 and watchdogs 2 just seem like such a long time investment. What 2 games do you infinitely come back to?

I get the point you’re making, but I still wanted to point out that RetroArch is multi platform, not just Android.

3.5” floppy disk: information stored on non rigid disc with rigid casing.

The newer, smaller disks were also called floppy because the actual disc inside was just as floppy as its predecessor.

I think OP was reluctant to call it their disk a floppy despite it being historically referred to as such
