Are mecca and medina even in that circle? Yemen definitely isn’t. Image is definitely false.

The article you mentioned tries to be balanced with point and counterpoint. There are some sweeping assumptions being made in that article as well.

I will say that if Mecca was Petra, many historical events occurring between mecca and medina become impossible. Battle of Badr, Uhud, etc. The tribes involved in the above events also didn’t reside in Petra.

It comes across as an outsider’s fun little thought experiment. Very orientalist in its approach.

I’m not sure. It’s the first I’ve ever heard of it. The Western academic approach to Islamic studies is historically rooted in refuting Islam’s credibility instead of objectively studying it, so you’ll hear all sorts of wild assertions and conclusions that would make a five year old Muslim laugh. It may be improving these days, but I don’t keep current with this stuff. Anyways, Mecca is literally in the Arabic text of the Quran, so it’s not some translator filling in the gaps with interpretation:

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 | The new standard will replace SMS as the default communication protocol between Android and iOS devices (www.theverge.com)

The long-awaited day is here: Apple has announced that its Messages app will support RCS in iOS 18. The move comes after years of taunting, cajoling, and finally, some regulatory scrutiny from the EU....

Their attempts at reproduction, doomed from the start, only fuel the virus’ spread, a group of scientists at Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History told NPR in a statement.

Is this a fungus or a virus?

Straw man. Science doesn’t try to prove if God is real or fake.

One of my favorite quotes from Blood Meridian:

God dont lie. No, said the judge. He does not. And these are his words. He held up a chunk of rock. He speaks in stones and trees, the bones of things.

As an aside, it’s worth noting not every religion conflicts with science.

You might not be able to afford bread, but at least you’ll get circuses.

What reading style do you consider more tedious to read, A) short, concise, and precise, but using non-layperson vocabulary, B) using layperson vocabulary, but it's longer, drawn out, and not precise?

I’ve seen a lot of people on here be teased for difficulty expressing themselves. Either people complain “you’re using big person words to describe mundane things” when they’re aiming for precision or “woah, we don’t need that damn wall of text” when they’re aiming for clarity. It’s like people just want to...

The metaverse already exists, imo. It just isn’t called that and doesn’t belong to zuck. It’s all the multi-user VR experiences that exist today.

They are just commenting the same way they talk to their friends. People quote funny lines from movies right after watching or say stuff like, “Did you see that crazy stunt in the film?? He literally drove off a cliff!!” They get tons of upvotes too because people feel a connection by recounting and acknowledging what they collectively experienced. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

You mean people getting offended because they misinterpret a friendly jab? Personally, I wish more people commented in a friendly manner. So many toxic comments out there 😬

Interesting observation. I’ve noticed men I know that go to church found relationships and marriage, but they probably would have failed in the tinder-verse. More anecdotal, not a scientific study, so take it with a grain of salt.

Jilanico ,
@Jilanico@lemmy.world avatar

That’s an interesting point. We’re forced to make a judgement call because we don’t have total control over what it generates.

Jilanico ,
@Jilanico@lemmy.world avatar

Most of the stuff that inspires me probably wasn’t paid for. I just randomly saw it online or on the street, much like an AI.

AI using straight up pirated content does give me pause tho.

Jilanico ,
@Jilanico@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a good point. Musicians have been known to accidentally reproduce the same beat as another musician (was is done subconsciously or just coincidence?). Some books are strikingly similar to other books that it makes you wonder if it was a rip off or just coincidence. So it’s nothing new, but it may become more prevalent with AI. This could spawn a new industry of investigators ensuring your AI generated art isn’t infringing on any copyrights 🤔

The stuff I sell on jilanico.com? Enough to make it worth my while.

Jilanico ,
@Jilanico@lemmy.world avatar

The framebuffer on your computer copies the data to display the font to you. That’s my point. Not every form of copying infringes on copyright.

Jilanico ,
@Jilanico@lemmy.world avatar

When you look at a picture of the joker online, your browser is caching an image file of the joker on your computer. Is that not an illegal copy?

Jilanico ,
@Jilanico@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think anyone is advocating to legalize the sale of copyrighted material made via AI.

Jilanico ,
@Jilanico@lemmy.world avatar

I really do not believe midjourney is storing all the files on the Internet in a humongous database. They are just exposing the AI to them for training just like you expose your computer to them when you visit with your web browser. I’m happy to be wrong about this, but I’m just not convinced. Please try to keep your temper.

Jilanico ,
@Jilanico@lemmy.world avatar

That makes them a humongous database

I understand why you’re saying that, but I personally don’t agree. As AIs face legal challenges, maybe your opinion will be adopted, we’ll see.
