shalafi ,

You got my gears turning. LOL, for good or for evil.

What if we had a paid service that worked like torrenting? DEEP discount, but you opt to share upload costs? (Best for last, bear with me.)

Company like Spotify coordinates it all, takes their skim off the top for running the servers, devs, payroll, workman’s comp, unemployment insurance, managers, janitors, tech support, typical business stuff. Might not be $BIG% profitable, but 0.001% is hella money in this game.

We could even have upload tiers. How much you want to upload back? More = cheaper. Unlimited download no matter the tier, but you gotta “pay back” the system to for low rates. Wanna mooch? No problem! Top tier pricing for you! Go over? No problem! We got a grace period. Hell, we’ll let your MB’s roll over if you don’t use 'em! Keep pushing your down vs. up, and sorry, we gotta tack a bit on next month. Would you like to go up a tier and maybe save?

And we only try to sell that offer to people our algorithm shows it will truly help. Had a vendor do that to me last week! “Don’t take the standard offer. You’re already doing $X, so $Y costs nothing more in your case.” Wish I could remember the deal, but it was great to have a rep shoot me straight!

We’d almost have to start with an existing company. They got the infrastructure, contracts, and such, but they also got stubborn inertia. Some billionaire needs to get me onboard with this!

Any yes y’all, I understand the DevOps, Dev, infrastructure, payroll, management, etc., spend would be astronomical from scratch. Hell, ever considered the company needs a UI expert for $150/yr. at a minimum? Double that with taxes and benefits. And throw in the AWS bill. shudder

It would be a massive clusterfuck to get going. But what if we could get “Spotify” for $1-$10/mo. depending on your contribution?

Best: What if it was a federated/socialist sort of thing? I like country and rap (seriously), so I opt into servers that mainly have that content. Saves me and my fellow fans upload, because we’re uploading to each other and not costing the service anything but a few pennies to the artist!

I know this has 12 holes in it, but am I straight nuts?

andrybak ,
@andrybak@startrek.website avatar

I assume this will have to be a streaming service, as opposed to a download service for various reasons. Here are some points related to it:

  1. Skype (the video/voice call and chat application) used to be federated in a similar way on desktops until late 2000s. Users with available bandwidth were treated as nodes. People even reported, that sometimes, whenever Internet wasn’t working, Skype was the only thing that continued to work — because someone on the same network was a node at the time and their Internet was working.

This all broke down due to the advent of mobile devices. Phones cannot be used as such nodes for traffic. Nobody was going to put up with Skype draining both your data (if your tariff/contract has data limit) and your phone battery. This feature of Skype is long gone now.

Similarly, too many people are using Spotify on the go. People would have to pay way more for using such a “torrented” service via phone apps.

  2. The different nodes in such network will have vastly different bandwidth, which makes it more complicated to maintain a consistent stream (i.e. with not buffering, stuttering, etc). Regular BitTorrent downloads don’t care, because they usually aren’t streamed. However, it’s possible to make BitTorrent downloads more favorable to streaming the content by forcing downloads of chunks of files in order.

  3. The nodes in such service need to manage bandwidth for obvious reasons. They would also need to manage storage – the music, the audiobooks, and the podcasts need to be stored somewhere. Also, the nodes would need to manage CPU (or GPU or whatever) for encoding/reencoding/whatever. Managing resources (using them, allocating, throttling, deallocating) on a computer that you don’t control is extremely hard, which is an additional layer of complexity. It is even hard on computers that you do control (this video explains why).

  4. Apparently podcast apps Juice and Miro support BitTorrent, but I don’t know anything about it. They download the whole thing, i.e. don’t stream, as far as I can tell.

  5. See also:

Sure but I’m not sure that most HR management software companies are going to be keen on handing over source for you to review.

fushuan ,

It’s annoying to be the weird one that rewrites all the code on the files I touch because I bothered to press format. Then someone forgets to pull before changing the code and suddenly the merge is not fast forward and the conflict resolution is a mess. It’s not that big of a deal, for me a t least, but when i format the code it’s 3 other dumbasses that get conflicts, and sometimes I just can’t bother enough to fix their issues because I took care of formatting it once.

Nowadays I use an opinionated linter, format my stuff and call it a day.

nickwitha_k ,

I loathe linter errors. If you know that I did it wrong and how, just fix it and stop wasting everyone’s time. That’s why I’m in favor of opinionated formatters in the per-commit automation. No point in wasting everyone’s time and making silly merge conflicts possible.

Unfortunately this idea tracks with a lot of online content. People who have time and energy to be extremely opinionated about things generally either don’t have a lot else going on, or have direct personal experience that led to their strong views. As people get older and life gets busier people seem far more likely to just do whatever they need to get by and shut up about it.

After 10 years of doing it for work, I still get frustrated about language issues.

But semicolons? It’s 2023, why does your language have semicolons at all? If you’re one of those poor sods stuck with Java, still it’s not an issue, all IDEs will warn you, and basically complete half the code for you.

soggy_kitty ,

They pay me more money than all of the other Devs because I’m the only guy willing to take on our existing stacks usage of shudders JavaScript. Most Devs I meet straight up refuse to learn it, let alone code in it.

Windex007 ,

It’s 2023, why does your language have semicolons at all?

Explicitly constructing your intentions are features of a language.

I LOVE types. I LOVE semi colons. I LOVE compiler errors.

Why? Because the ALTERNATIVE is finding (if you’re lucky) unexpected behaviour at run-time.

I promise, I promise SO HARD, that memes about semi colons or “my code doesn’t compile” are GREAT problems to have.if that’s what’s making you sad, your life is good and you’re getting paid 10x too much.

_danny ,

People who are annoyed by types have never had to spend weeks of their life hunting for a missing property on an object.

Compilation errors are so much more preferable than finding out the same error at runtime.

Rodeo ,

Ada has got your back. Entire classes of runtime bugs in C code are eliminated by compiler errors.

You can’t even make a integer overflow unless you’ve explicitly declared that statement as unsafe, thereby disabling the compiler checks.

flamingo_pinyata ,

Semicolons are not at all comparable to types.

Types give structure to your program, prevent bugs and make team work easier. Semicolons are an artifact of the times it was thought multiple statements could go on a same line. Although I do admit, they make language design easier.

nathris ,

Semicolons are optional in JavaScript unless you are combining multiple statements on a single line, which is generally not something you should be doing anyway.

I avoid them whenever possible. It encourages people to write poorly formatted code. But then I’m a python dev so I tend to be opinionated when it comes to whitespace.

ericbomb OP ,

I mean a pound of beef costs $4.

A pound of raw lentils like a $1.

Lentils are more calorie dense.

Lentils are more protein dense.

Black beans are in similar camp.

Rice and wheat products are cheaper per calorie, but lack the protein.

So yeah, it’s just cheaper to be a vegetarian, even with massive beef subsidiaries. But veggie patties are still more expensive because of processing and they are smaller batches.

scala ,

To add to this as a vegan of 10+ years. To supplement the lack of protein, I use pea based protein powder for a meal. And add hemp seeds for other meals/snacks during the day.

We occasionally get the processed grounds/meat substitutes only when they are on sale. Which would be 2lbs for $6 for a gardien/beyond/impossible alternative to animal flesh in pounds.

I need meat with my legumes that is if I am not working because I have a severe carb intolerance so anything from oats, to brown rice to beans and tubers trigger my IBS and make me confused. The only fix was 3 months of straight keto where I felt amazing, was exercising and looked great but… my boyfriend learned how to make pizza thw right way and nothing will ever replace the dough on pizza so once a week I have that, fast the rest and when I eat it’s steak or chicken or shrimp or fish with spinach or something. Must be nice to have that kind of privilege to eat what you want though!

You want the real reason in a thread jerking off vegetarianism? Here goes:

    1. Meat tastes great.
    2. It gives me a sense of fullness that plants rarely do (except beans).
    3. It’s a better protein source.
    4. The iron, B12, etc. in it are more easily absorbed.
    5. Every brand of fake meat I’ve tried tastes terrible.
    6. It makes me feel the best mentally compared to eating other foods.
    TheFriendlyDickhead ,

Yes meat does that. I am talking about fake meat.

    FatCrab ,

Impossible and beyond taste delicious in respective appropriate dishes. Dunno wtf you’re on about. Also a lot less prep and clean up to toss a frozen patty on the grill than cook a bunch of veggies. The downside is that it isn’t particularly healthy-- at least on par with a red meat burger. But the idea that they all “taste bad” is just dumb and contrary to what clearly a ton of other people experience.

    4lan ,

Why is it that countries that don’t eat red meat as much as Americans live far longer than we do?

Okinawans live well past 100, and are doing physical activity into their 90s. Americans are falling apart by the time they turn 60, dead before they hit 80.

I hope the flavor is worth the colon cancer!

    fatalError ,

Not American myself, but I can think of a few factors besides meat:

    • less stress
    • less polution
    • less processed food, be it meat or not
    • less sugar
    • less sedentary lifestyle
    • genes

Nutrition alone won’t get you to 100. Having a diverse diet keeps ypu healty, but there are many factors that impact health. I do agree that meat is overused in general population, but can’t really force the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle onto an omnivore specie.

They also have a sense of community. Americans will fuck over anyone for a slight advantage.

There are actually many places on Earth that are just like Okinawa in that they have long lives. I think that’s evidence enough that genetics are not a big factor. They are not some sort of superhumans, They just live a better life.

Go ahead and defend how Americans live… We are insatiable pigs, on a whole. Nearly half of us are overweight because we can’t control ourselves. We have no meaningful culture. captainlezbian ,

Yeah people really don’t believe me when I talk about how much I save by being a low fish pescatarian. A can of beans is cheaper than equivalent beef or chicken as are mushrooms. Peanut butter sandwiches are a cheaper lunch than lunch meat ones. And I’m not hurting for protein because beans are full of the stuff

    Illegal_Prime ,

    Daft_ish , (edited )

But we act like youtube is something more then just a place to post videos. We can build a new youtube tomorrow if people weren’t so invested in it. If you have some content on YouTube you just can’t live without fine but for everything else lets migrate… sorry, got a little preachy.

Edit: I get all you think everything’s impossible. I get it, I’m not going to be the one to make new youtube but obviously if it were to happen you are not the ones I would pitch to.

    Sestren ,

Yeah, that’s completely untrue… The reason we can’t just create a new youtube is the same reason there aren’t more ISPs. The infrastructure cost is too high.

You can’t just build a site that allows video uploads and playback, throw it on a Pi and release it to the world. You need scalability, and that costs money.

Maybe the end solution is a distributed system, but that’s not something you can easily sell to the average Joe that doesn’t give a shit about the “how” or “why” with Youtube, and simply wants to watch videos.

I’m not saying that Google isn’t the scum of the earth, but there is currently no feasible way to recreate what they’ve made/bought without an absolutely stupid amount of money.

YouTube itself is bound to implode because of the cost of all that infrastructure… sheesh. I recently reduced my YT time to the bare minimum, after being screwed out of premium (light), and found out about Peertube. It’s pretty bare bones, but viral videos can use P2P to offload the main server, which I thought was smart and fair. So, federated YouTube can be done I think. It won’t be easy though, or cheap.

    amio ,

We can build a new youtube tomorrow

Unfortunately not. The cost would be astronomical. Youtube bled money like a stuck pig for a long time, and their monetization has turned out predictably awful, every time.

Don't get me wrong, the competition would be great, or at least having the option of something... less Youtube. There's a reason you don't see a lot of alternatives around, though, and certainly nothing at the same kind of scale.

    UNWILLING_PARTICIPANT ,

I get your heart’s in the right place. But good luck finding investors to pay for the massive infrastructure costs to back your YouTube alternative (read competitor) without a plan to extract money from someone. Not even to break even, but to turn a profit.

It’s not just Skyclub or travel videos. If I search for “repair mr coffee” I want to see a howto, not someone’s SEO-optimized long winded lecture about whatever coffeemakers they’re selling.

Yes but it is also way bigger then it was. The amount of data that YouTube has now is just insane. I wonder when they’ll start culling old videos.

    pirat ,

I think they already began removing old, inactive channels some time ago…

    tdawg , (edited )

So the weird thing is you can still do this but only if YouTube thinks you’re the right audience for it. My grandfather looks up all kinds of old things on YouTube and almost always get exactly what he wants on the first hit. However if I do it it ends up more like your example. Interesting and annoying at the same time

    pirat ,

Sounds like it would actually make sense to have a handful of different accounts, each account optimized (through search/watch history or something) for a specific type of content you want to search for.

Otherwise, 3rd-party search engines are often better than YouTubes own search for finding obscure/rare/unpopular/unlisted/demonetized videos.

Singular they goes back at least as far as Shakespeare. Also, "you" was originally a plural pronoun.

    authed ,

Cant “you” still be used to mean many people? “do you all” “you guys” etc…

Also, there’s a lot of Shakespeare speech that is kind of incomprehensible today.

    explodicle ,

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that we eliminate the plural “they”, either.

If Shakespeare’s English is too hard to comprehend today, then we can make it easier by switching one part back. It also proves that they’re ;-) not just trying to sound more important or whatever transphobic bs.

    Skua ,

Yes, it can, but my point was that it used to only mean multiple people and we don't have any trouble using it to refer to just one

No, I think it was the opposite. I’m the one who keeps insisting that socialist philosophy doesn’t stop in 1924, that the socialist international is not a Leninist organization, and that MLs who quote Chomsky in defense of autocratic politics are way more fucking dense than any lib.

Y’all are the ones who treat Lenin’s half baked, modernist screed like some cringeworthy dogma painted on your cave wall, while continuously demonstrating that you are mostly slacktivists, trolls and keyboard warriors who express no actual interest in political philosophy beyond your painfully outmoded geopolitical head canon, yet go around mocking others for not finding your stick drawings very convincing.

    ThereRisesARedStar , (edited )

Okay, so you would be willing to explain some basic marxist ideas to the viewer then?

    Great!

How do fixed capital, ttotroptf, and the primary mode of worker alienation under capital intersect?(As described by Marx and not successfully criticized up to the present day) This has multiple answers and one of them can be a one word answer.

    That out of the way, on a personal note;

I work on two different grassroots campaigns because a nearby hospital is closing and the lead pipes are poisoning the community’s children. I am heading up internal reorganization to make my org safer, and am donating most of my salary from my bullshit job that lets me post and organize for most of the day to socialist orgs, while surviving as a multiracial trans woman in a rural area of a deep red state. I’m currently reading socialist and anarchist texts written in the last 5 years, on hiatus from reading a book about the soviet dual monetary system because it is machine translated from Russian and is a slog.

I have more respect for the least educated hexbear slacktivists than I do for anti-communist “socialists” like yourself.

Log the fuck off and start from the basics again, because you’ve obviously misunderstood them based on all the dogshit takes I’ve seen from you. All the anarcho syndies I know who actually do shit would not get along with your sorry ass.

    socsa ,

Yeah buddy, I’m not your monkey. If you want to have an actual conversation about why, eg, autocracy doesn’t do jack shit to resolve exploitation via labor alienation and commodification, I’m here for it. Or if you want to go over why the complete lack of actionable framework for curating the political agency of the individual is, in fact, one of the most glaring and widely discussed holes in Marxist orthodoxy, I’d love to pull that string.

But if you are just going to be another smug sectarian who insists on making dishonest campist garbage the bottom of their moral well, then I guess we can keep taking pot shots at eachother. I just think the internet deserves a better class of socialist.

    ThereRisesARedStar , (edited )

Yeah buddy, I’m not your monkey.

I’m sure you can definitely answer it, mhmm. Very believable.

autocracy doesn’t do jack shit to resolve exploitation via labor alienation and commodification, I’m here for it.

This demonstrates a lack of basic knowledge of theory as well as data on how AES have developed their workplaces.

But who knows, might be wrong. What did you read that lead you to this conclusion?

Or if you want to go over why the complete lack of actionable framework for curating the political agency of the individual is, in fact, one of the most glaring and widely discussed holes in Marxist orthodoxy

Who is an orthodox marxist though? Also, youre going to have to define individual agency if you dont think AES states don’t cultivate it.

But if you are just going to be another smug sectarian

Literally in a left unity instance, you’re the one claiming the vast majority of socialists throughout the world are bad when you claim they’re all autocratic.

    socsa ,

Yes, people who unironically support Leninism, Stalinism and Maoism are supporters of autocratic, and in many cases tyrannical politics. These are first principles for the vast majority of people who study politics, all over the world. It only feels strange because places like hexbear and lemmygrad have this extremely weird liturgy, where vaguely expressing any form of the idea that some forms of autocracy can be more evil than some forms of capitalism is the worst sin.

Really, the only thing which is confusing to me is why anyone who espouses egalitarian and queer friendly principles would associate with people who actively promote a global alliance of countries who would exterminate them. I don’t condone association with campists for the same reason I don’t condone association with Republicans.

    ThereRisesARedStar ,

Most socialists in the world are some type of ml or maoist. Yes, I bet they teach in capitalist schools all over the world that the enemies of capitalism are some kind of monsters. But people actually exposed to socialism in practice seem to think much differently. The CPC has a 95 percent approval rating according to international pollsters. But Im guessing you know better than 1.3 billion Chinese folks about their government.

Really, the only thing which is confusing to me is why anyone who espouses egalitarian and queer friendly principles would associate with people who actively promote a global alliance of countries who would exterminate them.

Ah yes, the GDR and Cuba, well noted for their exterminationist policies.

Socialist countries have a better track record with trans issues than capitalist countries at similar levels of wealth. Socialist countries also don’t create far right death squads all over the world that just happen to also exterminate queer folks. There is a reason why so many maoists in the Philippines are queer.

    socsa ,

where i live a family of people born among the poorest 10% would take an average of nine generations to reach the middle class. nine. even ignoring the generational part, that’s about 20 million people condemned, by birth, to a life of deep poverty, lacking even the most basic goods such as food and housing. and we’re officially considered a “middle income” country.

all, and i mean all AES states solved this problem either completely or nearly so by giving people decent jobs, education, health care and housing

so yea it’s impossible for me to not find you people absolutely ridiculous when you talk shit about said states just because they “arrested too many citizens” or didn’t allow enough fucking free speech. you can rip my fucking tongue off if it means i don’t have to see my people getting fucked on a daily basis

Okay, so as a cab driver I have a lot of opportunities to get frustrated with how selfish and myopic people are. But you know what happens when I do that? I make myself miserable.

I, personally, find that my mental state is much, much better the more I’m willing to accept people not doing things ‘the right way’. Yes, I could get annoyed for the hypothetical people who might encounter an obstacle to their mobility here (who have not and may not ever arrive), but what will that actually do for me or for anyone else?

Unless I’m actually moving the obstacle my disapproval is completely useless. It may even cause me to do something stupid and inconsiderate myself as I become distracted by my annoyance.

But if I just let it go, smile, and move on, the utter insignificance of the action can just fade into the background and not make itself part of my focus on how to reflect on humanity or my day.

I heard it’s psichologically unhealthy to hide them in your darkest parts of mind, after all they’re just sitting there in your subconscious without you knowing it. Frustration will keep gathering though, please speak to your friends, family or therapist about these issues before depression hits.

If you suppress it, letting it fester, you’re right. But that’s not what they’re talking about.

They’re describing actually letting it go. Letting the emotions wash over you and dissipate naturally. It may look the same on the outside, but internally it’s very different. It’s by far the best skill for your mental health.

Hmm … I think the point of this post, and comm, is being (righteously) annoyed. When leavened with humor, of the self-deprecating kind, it’s good.

But public indulgence of righteous indignation is kinda gross. Once in a while maybe…

    ParsnipWitch ,

Yes, I could get annoyed for the hypothetical people who might encounter an obstacle to their mobility here (who have not and may not ever arrive), but what will that actually do for me or for anyone else?

You could move the bikes for that hypothetical person. I can not move a bike like that because of my disability.

Personally I could pass those at the side, but I have friends who need a walking aid or wheelchair who probably couldn’t. Vehicles parked in the middle of the way are a regular road block. It is often because people without disabilities can’t (or won’t) imagine that people who can’t move a bike or climb over a scooter exist.

    spoilerpretty cool song right?

spoilerAnyway, It’s about John Hinckley, a lot of the lyrics were lifted from a sort of manafesto he wrote, he tried to assassinate Ronald Regan, he had a lot of mental health issues, and he watched Taxi Driver, and decided to do what he titular character does in the film by assassinating a politician, it’s not clear if he understood Jodie Foster was a seperate person from the character she played in the film, but his motivation was to impress her.
