Several NATO members have already okayed this for Ukraine and remain distinctly un-nuked. Plus, of course, the Ukrainians have been doing it with their domestically-produced gear for ages and also haven't been nuked.

I love how four of the six countries we can see names for are literally next to each other as well

Weshesh, one of the groups Ramesses III said he defeated when the Sea Peoples attacked Egypt. As far as I know, though, they're one of the groups that we have basically no other mentions or evidence of, so we have no idea who they were

"During WW1" is the context for this

The article says that the Ministry has suggested students use other programs, so it sounds like it's just something students often use rather than something that's actually required. I've not been in school for a long time, but I am doing a distance learning course and when I had to submit some written stuff I definitely found it more comfortable to type it up in an actual word processor than the web platform that only showed about a paragraph at a time, so I did that and then copied it to the web platform.

Actual explanation: these squid are transparent normally, but can turn on a dark pigmentation when that is a more effective camouflage. Being transparent works quite well most of the time, but if the predator has its own light source (as several deep-sea predators do) then their transparent state becomes a problem, because it's relatively reflective compared to the water around them. In this situation, turning on the dark pigment helps them blend in with the dark water better.

Huh, not sure what's going on there. It looks fine on my instance obviously, but it seems fine on yours and the post's in the browser at least. Then again kbin seems to be particularly janky with links in particular. Thanks for making a version everyone can see

They're American

Skua ,

They're only struggling because the West is arming Ukraine. The Ukrainians fought hard from day one, but they'd have been overrun and at best operating a guerilla campaign without being given heaps of equipment. Look what has happened while America stopped sending stuff over, and's while Europe was still sending stuff. Europe's arms industry is substantial, pretty much on par with the US in terms of value exported, but it's lacking things like the ability to supply an artillery war like the one going on in Ukraine. Since the US doesn't seem to be very reliable, Europe is gonna have to cover that base itself if it wants to be able to deter actions like Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

I find it useful if I'm counting only specific instances of something that meet some criteria. That way my brain can focus on picking out the right things and not have to worry about keeping the current count in mind. I use the method with your thumb on each segment of your fingers though, so you can get up to twelve with one hand and 156 with both

Skua ,

Use the other hand to count twelves! Each time you fill up one hand, add one to the other. That way you can get all the way to 156, which is probably more than you'd ever want to count one by one anyway

Skua ,

Well you see, the UN's logo is actually a top-down view of Earth. Apparently. Because they can't keep a conspiracy secret without leaving some clues in the open for kicks.

Soon he's gonna go grab the sword from the Motherland Calls and take to the frontlines himself

The UK openly said Ukraine could use British-supplied weapons on Russian territory a few weeks ago. We're much closer to the Russian heartlands and have a much less scary military than America, but Russia hasn't done shit about it

Skua ,

The European NATO members did continue supplying Ukraine. However, the US had previously accounted for roughly half of the total arms supplied and Europe didn't do anything extra to make up for that sudden colossal shortfall.

The language used seems very Abrahamic for a Hindu nationalist. Like consistently referring to a singular God usually referred to only as God. Is this some translation weirdness, or is it just normal language that's surprising me because I'm not familiar with the context? I know that a lot of denominations of Hinduism hold one of the gods as being the primary one, but even that seems like it would be a fast way to alienate other denominations

Skua ,

They got to announce that inflation is more or less back down to normal levels, so this is about as good as the polling is likely to be. A there was one a few months back that actually showed the Conservatives getting fewer seats than the SNP. To be clear it was only one poll and I do not think it will happen, but for readers that don't already know this, the SNP only even contest less than 10% of the total seats. The fact that that was ever even close to the bounds of possibility is wild.

Skua ,

I think you've misunderstood the comment above. They're asking why snapshotting DRM-protected content would be a problem if everything stays local, implying that since it's a problem it does not stay local

NASA's design is a few kilometres long and accelerates the vehicle at about 3 G up to roughly Mach 1. The technology is the same principle as a railgun, but it's more like a maglev train with a track that ends pointing upwards a bit

I don't feel comfortable putting that much important stuff in one thing. If I lose my phone or my wallet, the other can do a lot to help cover for it until I get a replacement

Skua ,

I'm not sure how much of a difference that would make. That's less than the total cumulative CO2 emissions of China and the US, and it's 1% of 1% of the total mass of the atmosphere

Skua ,

The advantage of making fuels from plants isn't in them burning cleaner, it's in the fact that growing the plants takes carbon out of the atmosphere. That means that the carbon released upon burning them was carbon that was already recently in the atmosphere, as opposed to being deep underground like it was with fossil fuels

That doesn't negate the issues of land use changes and similar, but in terms of plain old net carbon emissions they absolutely are better

Skua ,

For sure, I'm not disagreeing with the article. The problems raised by this report are not what the comment I was replying to raised, and I think that we should criticise these things for their actual problems.

Skua ,

Aviation is about a fortieth of the world's total emissions, so while there are certainly bigger sectors to look at it's still substantial enough that it'd be extremely helpful to fix it

Skua ,

As the article correctly points out, 3 C warming is still really fucking bad. Just because it can technically be worse and we won't all die does not mean it'll be nice to live through. Bringing about the extinction of 29% of all species is madness. To quote the article:

"The most comprehensive and authoritative assessment of risk across all sectors — health, food, water, conflict, poverty, and the natural ecosystem — by the IPCC in 2018 basically concluded that we don’t want to warm the planet beyond 1.5°C (2.7°F), and we really don’t want to warm it beyond 2°C (3.6°F). And if we do happen to overshoot those targets, we want to keep the duration of overshoot to a minimum."

Here's Alaric. He made me panic when I first adopted him because it seemed like he was refusing to eat for several days. I then discovered that he had found the bag of cheese treats, hidden it behind the sofa, torn it open, and eaten nothing but those the whole time. He also dislikes hearing voice calls for some reason, perfectly happy to sit on my lap while I watch a video but will get up and leave if I go on a discord chat or take a phone call. Those big ears of his can apparently tell the difference, even when I'm using headphones.

I love this little guy. He is a blessing.

If someone could convincingly scientifically back up their belief that climate change isn't going to be a big deal, they'd be swimming in oil company money to promote their work. There's definitely an incentive to research it if you think the other way.

Skua ,

It feels weird to frame this as an EU objection considering that Greece has also put the same kind of ban in place. It's specifically France objecting.

But for other Brexiteers, the policies help illustrate the flexibility the U.K. has outside the EU on matters which would have previously been subject to lengthy negotiation under the Commons Fisheries Policy — and which Brussels and member states are outright hostile to for their own reasons.

Brexit benefits! We could never have done this as EU members without a whole load of negotiations, please ignore that we're still dealing with a whole load of negotiations over it and also that EU member Greece did it on a larger scale than us!

Even if China literally just never produced another gram of CO2 ever, we'd have the same problem slightly later. We really do all need to take part, especially those of us in countries that produce more carbon per person. China produces about as much per person as Europe does, but that's still way too much

Skua ,

To be fair, China actually does emit about as much per capita as Europe when measuring by consumption nowadays. Unfortunately that just means both are way too high, and several other major economies are even worse

Skua ,

we clearly haven't brexited hard enough yet

Skua ,

Fuck it, buy extra Taurus systems with frozen Russian assets. We can have both.

Skua ,

To add to this, we apparently always knew. The famous blue image is more or less the correct hue, but the saturation has been absolutely blown out like a clickbait youtube thumbnail in order to show faint features more clearly. Somewhere along the line we stopped mentioning that that had been done. Irwin and co just just re-calculated it to get the most accurate version yet, because we've got a lot more data to work with now than we did back when Voyager 2 did its fly-by

Skua ,

Why would Olympic athletes not be drafted?

Skua ,

The Ukrainian government clearly reckons that famous people getting special treatment is worse

Skua ,

I don't know a lot about either program, but it seems pretty reasonable to test one new system with other stuff that's well-understood and reliable, rather than stacking multiple new tests atop one another

A UN mission that China has actively voted for repeatedly, no less. Every UNSC resolution against North Korea going back to 2006 has been unanimous.

Skua ,

If we're going by the way people use it, both are correct, because loads of people use both. As your search demonstrates. American cultural hegemony has not erased other varieties of English

Skua ,

Yes if you're American or Canadian, no if you're British, Australian, or New Zealander, and other varieties of English I'm afraid I'm not sure about. If you speak a variety that doesn't pronounce a second i, you probably also spell it without a second i
