It’s definitely way less work. If you get hired for an hour, you’re pretty much expected to be fully engaged in, if not sex, then at least being entertaining in some way. With the type of sex work she did, she was never getting paid for time spent sleeping or eating (and definitely not hanging out and shopping), unless that was someone’s kink, I guess. I had a series of sugar daddies in my early 20s, and don’t let anyone tell you that’s not sex work, and I definitely made less per hour than a more traditional prostitute, but I also put in a lot less energy. Plus, it came with a lot more perks.

I haven’t had any issue finding those amenities in hotels in Europe (at least in Berlin, Munich, Madrid, and Málaga, which is not an exhaustive study by any means). I’ve seen a few that look to be entire small apartment buildings converted into hotels, which isn’t great for the local housing market, but all the ones I’ve stayed at were clearly built for that purpose. So that’s the good news, I guess.

frickineh ,

Huh. Have any of them considered a job? If the mom was capable of driving her child to another state to murder some people, I bet she could drive for uber or something. Or be a getaway driver for other criminals, idk.

frickineh ,

Ok then I retract the part about driving. But I have a hard time feeling sympathy for her being unable to get a job. She’s repeatedly defended him and said she stands by him, and she allowed her 17 year old to buy a gun he couldn’t legally have and to drive without a license. Being associated with him is her doing. I have a family member who was a teenage white supremacist piece of shit (who was thankfully stopped by the FBI before he killed anyone), and you can bet nobody thinks I’m associated with him because I make it very clear where I stand. If I said he was a good person and I’ll always support him, I wouldn’t be shocked if employers said nah.

frickineh ,

Did you read the rest of the thread? I already acknowledged that I was wrong about that part, but they’re saying they can’t get work because of him while still refusing to condemn him. The GoFundMe says he was “involved in a tragic shooting incident,” which is a pretty weasely way to say he killed people.

I also question that it really has anything to do with him. He’s certainly not having any issues making money, and there are a concerning number of people who consider him a hero, or at the very least aren’t bothered by what he did (see the comments on this post for a whole lot of evidence). Surely some of them are hiring.

Somewhere, Brennan Lee Mulligan is crying and he doesn’t know why.

frickineh ,

They’re going to end up with a bunch of people complaining to the manager about the price not matching the sign, which already happens, but it’ll be 10x worse.

frickineh ,

The thing that sucks is that the managers aren’t going to be the ones with the power to do that. Then again, all of my managers were spineless as fuck when I worked in a grocery store (literally never had employees’ backs), so they’ll probably just do an override on the price anyway.

frickineh ,

I wish they’d all been more like you. Instead, all of the ones I had until my mid 20s were the kind of people who would tell us the policy was X and we absolutely could not do Y, and the second a customer bitched, suddenly Y was fine and they made us look like liars or idiots.

frickineh ,

And you know they’re in favor of mass deportations until it impacts their family members that are still undocumented. They just want other people’s family to be deported. It’s like all those stories that came out about white Trump voters who were upset about their undocumented spouse or their favorite restaurant owner or whoever being deported.

frickineh ,

It was. She’s 13 terms in, so I’m guessing it was taken when she was first elected, based on styling and photo quality. She have been in her early 40s, which seems about right.

frickineh ,

Many years ago, I worked in a call center. I was sitting with someone who was new helping them take calls and both of our headsets were plugged into the phone. The trainee was helping a store employee and she was just being awful to him. While she went to get something from the customer, I muted the line and said, “God, what a bitch!” except my finger was hovering over the button and I hit it just in time for her to hear me say bitch. I fully panicked and hung up on her. Nobody ever said anything to either of us and this was back when landlines would occasionally cross, so hopefully she thought that’s what happened since she hadn’t heard my voice up until then.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure that’s the origin of why I still don’t trust mute or hold to this day. I’m not talking shit until I know that call is disconnected.

frickineh ,

I’m the worst about this. My mom and I will try a new restaurant and I’ll be talking about “oh this needs acid, that’s the perfect amount of heat, blah blah.” Meanwhile, I’m over here “cooking” noodles with a pile of kimchi every other day because that’s all I ever have in the fridge.

frickineh ,

Oh I’m the opposite - I’m not a very good cook because I don’t enjoy doing it. I’m pretty good with flavors because I’m not afraid of seasonings, but my knife skills are bordering on Worst Cook in America levels. The abuse I have wrought upon poor, innocent, delicious onions is a crime.

Also, if you like the fried onions, have you seen the jalapeno version? So good. I’ve started putting them on everything.

frickineh ,

Coffee, hash browns, eggs. Then I spend my remaining money on hot sauce or green chile.

Don’t Call It an ‘Ethnic’ Grocery Store: As Asian groceries like H Mart, Patel Brothers and 99 Ranch expand, they are reshaping American eating habits, and the American grocery market (www.nytimes.com)

Last year, Americans bought half a billion packets of Shin Ramyun, the spicy, beefy Korean instant noodle. The bold red-and-black packaging feels inescapable: It’s a staple of college dorm rooms, bodegas, middle-of-the-country Walmarts and viral TikTok videos....

frickineh ,

I love H Mart, but fair warning, anything you can find at Target or a regular grocery store is probably overpriced at H Mart. One of the hot sauces I like was 50% more there, my mom got apples and they were like 3x the price of the same ones at Target, and so on. I only buy the specialty stuff I can’t get anywhere else now.

frickineh ,

The one by me is suuuper cramped, so no full food court, but they do have a little cafe area. I’ve never eaten there because I’m vegan and the menu is not, but I look sadly at it every time I pass it because Korean is one of my favorite cuisines.

Who is Jonathan Kaye? Millionaire investment banker slugs woman on NYC street during Brooklyn Pride, shocking video shows (lemmy.today)

Jonathan Kaye, a managing director at Moelis & Co., was identified by social media users as the man caught-on-camera punching the woman and sending her crashing down on a Park Slope street on Saturday night

frickineh ,

Why the hell is his employer doing an investigation and not the police?

frickineh ,

It doesn’t have to be justified to you, but it’s clearly worth it to some people. My most expensive sets are <$300, but having built a fan design, I can tell you the official ones are so much better that there’s not even a comparison. The construction is miles better and I’ve never had a missing brick in the dozens I’ve built. People are allowed to spend their money the way they want.

frickineh ,

Depends on if you care about making set playlists. That’s the feature that generally costs more - Pandora is like $5 a month without that option, and $11 with it. I only listen in the car and don’t care about picking exactly what songs are on my stations, so I have the cheaper one, but for other people, that wouldn’t cut it.

Yeah, like that sloppy fuck would even lift a finger, let alone a weight. He thinks humans have finite energy, too, so I’m sure he wouldn’t waste any of it just so Jesse Watters can jerk off a little more.

    frickineh ,

One would assume all the laws against theft. Because that’s what it would be.

    frickineh ,

It’s part of the media wing of a cult. Shen Yun is another part of it that a lot of people are familiar with - they perform all over the place doing “ancient Chinese dance” (which was invented in the 1950s). Epoch Times is the “news” piece. It’s all propaganda.

    frickineh ,

The thing is, the reason I haven’t seen anything is because I’m not interested and don’t have enough of an attention span to sit through stuff I’m not super into, so any time someone I’ve dated has been like, “we can watch so many things together!” my response is no thank you.

    frickineh ,

Yeah but we can do that without the distraction of a movie or show on in the background. Plus, a lot of people really, really want you to love the thing as much as they do, so if you’re not into it, they take it kind of personally, and I’m rarely into it. I don’t show people movies I really love anymore (unsolicited) after realizing that I’d spend the whole time worrying about what they think of it instead of just enjoying it.

    frickineh ,

I see that going so, so poorly for him. He’ll pretty much have to disable comments, but I feel like he’d hate that because he loves attention.

    frickineh , (edited )

Yeah, no fuckin shit. I’ve been incredibly fortunate and started saving for retirement at 22 (not because I could afford it, it’s mandatory when you work for the government) and I’m almost 40 and still only have about $220k saved. I’m miles ahead of most of my friends, and miles behind where I’d actually need to be to retire at 65. I realized a few years ago that my options are to work until I die or retire when I’m ready and off myself when I’m out of money. Option 2 is a lot more appealing - at least I’ll get to enjoy myself for a few years instead of none.

I’ve given up on the idea of owning a home. That’s just plain never gonna happen on a single income.

    frickineh ,

Nah, I’ve only worked at the city/state/county levels, never federal. I think they’ve all been in the neighborhood of 8-10% from both me and my employer, it’s just that I’ve made shit money for most of my career because I wanted to help people and those jobs pay like crap. I also lost about 50k the last time the market went in the shitter and I’ve spent the last few years just making up for that.

    frickineh ,

Oh yeah dementia is a hard no for me. My dad had glioblastoma and it was like cancer and dementia combined. Watching him made me even more positive that I’d rather jump off a cliff than live like that. Every day was confusing and scary and he became really volatile, but he turned down assisted suicide when he was still lucid, so there was nothing we could do. If I’m ever in that position, give me the drugs, I’m done.

    frickineh ,

The government should’ve bailed regular people out, not the banks.

    frickineh ,

I question whether he really even did it or if he just lied and wrote what he imagined would happen. He would’ve been immediately identifiable as a white guy in blackface, and I’m guessing he would’ve just gotten his ass beat. He also claims he interviewed actual black people but doesn’t name any of them afaik. If it turns out he made the whole thing up to write the book, I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

    frickineh ,

I woke up at 6 to get a head start on desecration, but then I had a bbq to attend later so I got way off schedule. I really need to be on the ball today if I want to destroy the sanctity of straight marriage and groom children by telling them that they’re valid and deserving of love no matter how they identify. It’s a lot of work for a Sunday, honestly.

    frickineh ,

You know when people complain about privileged white men who always feel like they need to make every conversation about them? This is the man. He’s the one we’re talking about. If this isn’t a very late, bizarre April Fool’s joke, he really thinks he did something with this. What an absolute clown.

    frickineh ,

I’m not saying look this guy up, but I’m not not saying that either. He’s a complete dweeb who apparently clerks for daddy’s law firm (which looks like a bunch of ambulance chasers but I didn’t care enough to do any research) and is almost certainly just looking for a payday. Then again, that may have been the first time he was ever in the presence of anything even close to sex acts, so who knows.

    frickineh ,

I haven’t listened to Madonna since the early 90s and don’t give one single fuck about her. As others have pointed out, it’s not doxxing if the guy publicly filed a lawsuit and his name is featured in most of the articles about it. His social media is (or was, as of yesterday) public and when you google him, his dad’s firm is one of first things that comes up. And they’re relevant because their motto appears to be, “we will sue somebody for you,” so it’s clear he’s following in his father’s footsteps. Suing Madonna, a performer who has had sexual content as part of her performances for 40 years is clearly a money grab and he deserves to be mocked for it.

Unless you are Justin, I’m not sure why you’re going so hard for this dude.

    frickineh ,

There has got to be someone who sucks less than James Charles for this. Shit, I’d take someone who knows how to color match.

    frickineh ,

Ugh Joffree is clearly some kind of hellspawn.

    frickineh ,

I think that’s probably true - Japan has such a sanitized reputation now (which, frankly, isn’t entirely deserved), and most people probably don’t ever take a history class after high school, so a lot of people probably genuinely don’t know how bad it was. I did a little over 3 years of an undergrad history major and never heard a word about it. The only reason I know anything about it is because my AP US History teacher in high school told a few of us about it after a class on WWII. I had nightmares about some of the pictures for a few nights. I see why they don’t generally teach it to kids.

    frickineh ,

Waffles. But my roommate in college bought a puppy before the summer, named it Waffles, took her home, and came back in the fall with an untrained dog that peed in the house and he never cleaned it up. Poor Waffles, she didn’t ask to be raised by terrible owners but I ended up moving out early because of her.

    frickineh ,

Oh I tried, but he undermined everything I worked on. I went home to work every weekend so she’d pee on the carpet and he’d just leave it until I got back, so the idea that peeing in the apartment was bad never really stuck. He let her chew a red marker all over the floor, too, and when I walked in to see her doing it and him in the couch ignoring her, he sat up and was like, “oh, uh, bad dog!” It was impossible.

    frickineh ,

Where did it come from? I really want a collection of oversized square-ass animals to hang up in my office now.

    frickineh ,

Every time I talk to my friends in academia, I’m grateful that I was just smart enough to know that I’m too stupid for academia.

    frickineh ,

No one has ever made a grab for natural resources except for the entirety of human history! Can’t explain that.

    frickineh ,

They didn’t say GIMP itself sucks, they said leaning to use it sucks. Those are two different things.

    frickineh ,

They’re so stupid. Income Withholding Orders don’t have to come from the court - they’re largely considered the default way to collect child support, and most orders automatically say they’re going to be put in place, so the court has already ordered that the enforcement agency can and should issue them.

The only time we didn’t issue an IWO was on orders that specifically forbade it (and we would go to court to get a new order if those cases were delinquent) or if the non-custodial parent was manually paying on time.

    frickineh ,

The deadbeat parent to sovcit pipeline is real.

    frickineh ,

TIL I was ambitious. And here I thought my attitude of, “I can skip these 2 papers and still have a solid C,” made me kind of a bum. NOPE! I skimmed so many papers.
