Can someone explain me USA obsession with prom and similar school rituals?

I just don’t get it… Why is that important, especially for kids now, that feel like they need to do a YouTube video asking for a date or doing some meme stuff. Some teens even hire the hottest celebrity or ask them to appear in their prom? This is so bizarre for me, all that just for a frivolous night....

son_named_bort ,

For a lot of high school seniors, prom is the last big event before graduation. It’s an event where you can hang out with a lot of your classmates away from school and parents and such. There aren’t too many opportunities to just hang out for a lot of teens, what with the homework and extra curricular activities and such occupying a lot of their free time. That being said, it’s not uncommon for people to skip the prom and some schools make it a bigger deal than others.

Why are fuel perks at grocery stores so ubiquitous?

This seems insane to me. I live in a city where maybe 50-60% of people have cars, and most don’t drive them that much. Yet every grocery store I’m aware of with the sole exception of the expensive Whole Foods has a fuel rewards points program. Reasons this should be controversial enough to enable a low-cost alternative:...

son_named_bort ,

It’s a way to keep people shopping at the same store. Since most fuel perks are something like 10 cents off a gallon for every $100 spent, if you spend a lot of money at a store then you get more off of a gallon. It then discourages you from going to a different store because you may not have as many fuel perks and would have to spend more to get the same fuel perks you may already have with the first store. The stores of course don’t want you to go to their competitors, so it’s a win for them.

I like customizations on the touchscreen. I’ve had several experiences where I tell the cashier what I want including customizations only to get my order and realize that the order wasn’t entered in properly. The touchscreen ensures that the order is at least entered properly.

Glockenspiels are usually smaller than xylophones.

Not a product, but life coach feels like the snake oil version of therapy.

What do you all check instead of the news?

I’ve realized that I check the news several times a day but not because I’m curious about what’s happening on the grand scheme of things, but because my brain wants to check something that keeps changing with new, evolving information. It fills a slightly different niche than social media, and I don’t watch sports so I...

I’m intrigued. Is there a website you can point me to?

It doesn’t help that a lot of companies outsource their call centers to third party vendors who only care about keeping the contract and not about the main company’s customers.

son_named_bort ,

Yes, that’s why they outsource.

son_named_bort ,

That’s okay, I’ll just download more RAM.

son_named_bort ,

I can’t even handle one manageable task.

I’m not the governor of Arizona either but I didn’t need the court to tell me that.

Does anybody actually feel safe because of the TSA?

son_named_bort ,

That sounds like slavery with extra steps.

son_named_bort ,

I looked it up and apparently most people who have died pissed at least once in their lives. You might be on to something there.

son_named_bort ,

Cloverfield. It was a monster movie where you barely saw the monster. Instead, we get the story of 4 characters with a camera trying to escape the monster but then going back to rescue their friend and may or may not have been killed by the monster. I don’t know, the movie had no beginning or end and yet it managed to spawn a couple of sequels.

I’m doing my part by taping Monday Night Football without the expressed written consent of ESPN or the National Football League.

Summer is the worst season of the year, isn't?

The sun sucks, being forced to shower like every 4 hours just to not feeling sweaty, the fucking mosquitoes, the fact you can’t wear anything that you want anymore due the heat, the people outside… The fucking beach. I try to avoid it… The fucking sand, not a fan of it. Is scratchy, harsh, annoying and it infiltrates in...

son_named_bort ,

I like summer. I can wear shorts. They’re cool and comfy.

I live in the US too, but thanks to my patented secret* I rarely fly at all!

Southern Baptists are poised to ban churches with women pastors. Some are urging them to reconsider (apnews.com)

From its towering white steeple and red-brick facade to its Sunday services filled with rousing gospel hymns and evangelistic sermons, First Baptist Church of Alexandria, Virginia, bears many of the classic hallmarks of a Southern Baptist church....

son_named_bort ,

I’m surprised they didn’t already have a ban in place.

I’m in a rush to get out of the house because I’m late for work or school or something like that. I get there on time to realize that I’m not wearing any pants and am shocked by this fact. I then try to hide that I’m not wearing pants.

son_named_bort ,

If that’s the case he picked a pretty bad time, place, and method of dealing with it.

son_named_bort ,

That’s why you blame someone else instead.

It’s not bad until you add in vomiting at the same time. It’s like the body becomes a going out of business sale, everything must go.

I saw a documentary about Burly Paper Towels once. One of their most loyal customers got to meet the mascot Chad Sexington. Turns out he was a loser and I heard he’s a boozer.

son_named_bort ,

It was. The company went under in 2019 and nothing of value was lost.

son_named_bort ,

Can’t tell if this is creepier than regular Dr. Phil.

The one thing I do miss about the N64 controller is the Z trigger on the back. It’s something that no modern controller has seemed to replicate. The closest I’ve seen is the Steam Deck, and even the triggers on the back of it aren’t quite the same.
