downpunxx , in Musk's interference to protect Russia allowed Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, and resulted in the deaths of civilians including children - Zelensky advisor.
@downpunxx@kbin.social avatar

The US has spent at least 80 Billion dollars arming and supporting Ukraine in it's defense against Russian genocidal aggression and Western expansion that puts the entire NATO block in jepordy, why is Elon fucking Musk allowed to put his thumb on the scale in favor of the enemy? Why isn't anyone in the Biden administration tearing him a new asshole form stem to stern, why isn't anyone in the Biden administration publicly discussing nationalizing Starlink. We're literally throwing money into conflict (for absolutely necessary, vital, and justified reason) that one man is deciding the outcomes of, and the United States government is just ..... what .... ok with this?

chemicalprophet ,

I’m just some dumbfuck but,…money?

JokeDeity ,

Money from the guy who moves his companies to dodge taxes?

demlet ,

Oh, ha ha, not tax money, bribes to the right politicians, silly…

Poggervania ,
@Poggervania@kbin.social avatar

Pretty much - Muskrat most likely privately funds (read: bribes) enough government officials to either stand by and do nothing or actively interfere.

This advisor should also consider the lack of response from the US itself as part of the problem - Muskrat is helping out an enemy, but uhhh… what the fuck did the government do to curb that shit from happening in the first place?

Slwh47696 ,

Friendly reminder to everyone that all politicians are corrupt pieces of shit that will sell you out in a heartbeat. I don’t know what the solution is but anyone who isn’t rich is getting absolutely fucked by our own governments.

mondo_brondo ,

Yes. Because a lot of powerful people stand to make a shitload of money off this conflict. The longer it goes, the more weapons it requires. The more weapons it requires, the more money they make.

Crozekiel ,

I don't feel like nationalizing Starlink for the USA is best for everyone. It is a world-wide network, I feel like it would be better as something that isn't controlled by any single country (but, obviously I agree it should not be controlled by a single billionaire fuck-boy either...).

Grellan ,

Go check out who runs GPS. Starling being nationalized isn’t happening, but if it did the service would likely keep on keeping on.

Crozekiel ,

GPS is quite a bit different. The satellites just orbit and send the same information out. The user device doesn't have to send anything back - the "communication" is only 1-way. Also, GPS is significantly further out from the planet and involves a lot less satellites, so it is not really feasible to turn them off specifically targeting a small area or an individual target - you'd have to black out a huge chunk of the planet to reliably block "an enemy" from using it.

jarfil ,

And that is why Russia also uses GPS.

spaghettiwestern OP ,

One thing that seems to be the case with Biden’s administration - there’s a lot going on behinds the scenes that we’re not aware of.

You’re right, there should be some life changing repercussions for Musk. Hopefully we’ll find out those are in the works.

AlwaysNowNeverNotMe ,
@AlwaysNowNeverNotMe@kbin.social avatar

That would require holding a billionaire accountable in some way though?

pennomi ,

If we’ve learned anything from the Trump indictments, it takes many years to build a watertight case against somebody with lots of legal resources.

Do we need to hold Musk accountable? Yes. But also we need to do it in a way that he can’t wriggle out of, and that means years of legal work first.

cloud ,

It’s not so hard to understand why, have fun doing simple math…

butterflyattack ,

Isn’t most of that $80 billion in the form of weaponry ordered from US manufacturers? Or maybe I’ve misunderstood. I thought much of the cash hasn’t really left America.

But yeah, musk needs to be stopped. No one person should have so much power, it makes a joke of democracy.

SpaceCowboy ,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

Most of it is actually old equipment they’re taking out of storage. Of course the US likes to have stuff like that around for various contingencies, one of which is the exact thing it’s being used for now. So new equipment will be bought for the US military and existing equipment will be placed into a storage a little sooner than usual.

But a big chunk of that price tag is ordinance, and yeah that needs to be re-ordered right away.

But at any rate, yeah nearly all of it is from US manufacturers, though there may be a few parts and things from allies like Canada.

AFKBRBChocolate ,

It’s insane to me that the CEO of a private company can directly engage to change the outcome of a battle without the whole population completely losing their shit over it. This asshole turned off his product to intentionally prevent our ally from succeeding in a battle against our enemy. And his reason is that he was trying to prevent escalation. How the fuck is that his call to make?

bennieandthez ,
@bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml avatar

concentrating wealth and power on individuals is literally the point of private property 😅

atzanteol ,

Another “liberal” who hates democracy…

Why isn’t Biden just confiscating a private company??? Are you serious?

SkyeStarfall ,

Billionaires are not democratic.

atzanteol ,

And what do you think calling for the state to take control of a business that disagrees with it’s policy goals is?

SkyeStarfall ,

Nationalization? That’s not a new concept.

atzanteol ,

So you’d be okay with trump nationalizing a company because it disagrees with his foreign policy?

SkyeStarfall ,

I wouldn’t be okay with trump in the first place, so I don’t see how that’s much of a gotcha.

atzanteol ,

Of course your don’t. You’re a partisan.

SkyeStarfall ,

Yes I support my position over others, what a revolutionary concept

atzanteol ,

“I don’t know what a partisan is”

dragonflyteaparty ,

How are these things in any way related?

Democracy - the people voting on laws; representative democracy - the people voting for representatives to vote on laws

Nationalizing a company that provides a fundamental, necessary world wide service because one man decided he could determine the outcome of a battle.

Hmm… not really sure how these two things are related.

atzanteol ,

Sure. 😉

fishos ,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

Why with all those billions are we relying on a private company for military communications? I’m not excusing Musk AT ALL, but communications are insanely important in a conflict. Why are these governments spending all of this money and not just doing it themselves? If the military ordered supplies from Walmart and Walmart didn’t deliver them, wouldn’t we be asking the government instead “why the hell did you do that?”

I think I figured it out.

Since every other law is attempting to force women to be stay at home moms, men are having to foot the bill for menstrual products, and we can’t be burdening men with such women problems.

OR Republican Texas men don’t know what tampons are for because sex ed in Texas, so the women who sponsored it lied and said it’s for babies.

dojan ,
@dojan@lemmy.world avatar

Wasn’t it a Texas politician who thought that menstruation is voluntary?

Wogi ,

Looking at the bill, a brief glance would make it seem that all it does is eliminate taxes for some stuff. You’d have to actually read it to find out what stuff it eliminates taxes on, which most Republicans won’t do. They see fewer taxes and they vote yes.

jasondj ,

Still doesn’t make sense. Any man with a kid and half a clue knows that they don’t bleed when they’re pregnant. Thus, tampons are only necessary when women aren’t fulfilling their wifely duties, barefoot and pregnant.

I mean, it really was seeming like the GOP wants every woman to be carrying their spawn (against their will) from menarche to menopause.

It should only be used when the crime is such that you legit can not put it in the same category as regular murder and a message has to be sent. Like when some dictator commits genocide. That’s it. givesomefucks , in Officers Texted Each Other About Trump Shooter but Didn’t Approach Him

The texts showed that an officer spotted Crooks occupying a suspicious area more than an hour-and-a-half before the July 13 rally commenced at 6 p.m. Previously, Secret Service officials said Crooks was first spotted an hour before the rally—an amount of time many lawmakers already considered to be egregious at a presidential candidate’s rally.

Other texts obtained by the Times revealed that an officer spotted Crooks using a range finder about 20 minutes before the rally began and snapped photos of him—but didn’t approach him.

The strangest part of this is people expecting cops to do something that might plausibly put them in harms way

Modern cops are almost exclusively all lazy cowards at this point.

Boddhisatva ,

It has also been ruled repeatedly that police do not have a duty to protect you. There is no requirement that they risk their lives to keep you or anyone else from harm unless they have a “special relationship” with you, meaning you are in their custody. The cops were there to work the metal detectors and direct traffic. There’s no way in hell they were going to take a bullet for Trump. That’s the Secret Service’s job.

ThePantser ,

PriorityMotif ,
@PriorityMotif@lemmy.world avatar

Cops aren’t trained in operational security. When you have a large event with multiple agencies and groups of people doing different things, then it’s easy to blend in if you act like you know what you’re doing. You can walk into almost any building if you throw on a high vis vest and carry a ladder. People will hold the door open for you and even let you into high security areas if you are smooth enough.

EleventhHour ,
@EleventhHour@lemmy.world avatar

A button-down shirt/khakis and lanyard with a name badge often works, too, especially if you’re talking while using a Bluetooth headset and typing on a phone. People just assume you’re some low-level exec or IT support personnel, esp if your phone is on one of those tacky belt clips.

ShepherdPie ,

This kid obviously didn’t blend in if the cops were talking about him and taking photos.

PriorityMotif ,
@PriorityMotif@lemmy.world avatar

Then why didn’t they just go talk to him?

ShepherdPie ,

My educated guess is that they looked at him milling about outside the rally and assumed he was a Trump supporter based on his look and wouldn’t be a problem.

As for the real answer, we’ll have to wait for them to give a statement, but it’ll likely be watered-down misinformation that paints police in the best light, so we’ll probably never know for sure.

Clent ,

Shift change. Not kidding. It’s in the article.

tempest ,

Crazy person open carrying an AR 15 would probably blend in fine at a Trump rally…

    I’m not going to discourage party leadership when they’re actually listening for once.

    Furbag ,

    100% agree. I don’t see any reason why she shouldn’t have just as much of a chance to beat Trump as Biden did, when Biden was essentially coasting on the “not Trump” vote anyway. That’s not to say he didn’t have legitimate achievements during his term - he is doing a fantastic job as president, but he doesn’t do a great job at communicating that when the people that need to hear it are watching. His political messaging/timing is terrible.

    Hopefully bringing Kamala into the forefront of the race will give the party a jolt of energy since it seems like a majority of the average voters approve of Biden stepping down. I’m just happy that we can finally shift the conversation away from age and aptitude and focus on the issues that people are going to actually turn out for - the economy, Dobbs, and SCOTUS nominations/reform.

What kinda idiot gets himself killed or imprisoned when he could be free? What the fuck kind of logic is it that says you have to submit to the judgement of a brazenly unjust and oppressive regime? Fuck that shit.

    It’s thanks to him that we’re at least aware of the movements of the enemy of the public that is the US state. Braver than any troop. Die mad about it.

I have no idea how it’s possible to be as naive as you, but I guess when you’re completely focused on licking the boot, you don’t have much awareness of anything other than that. In fact, your main problem with Snowden is that he made you aware of uncomfortable truths, you’d rather remain in comfortable ignorance so you don’t have to worry about the fact that you no longer have civil liberties. Just don’t move and you’ll never notice the chains, right? You’re too cowardly to face the truth.

    I could respect him if he was willing to pay the price to do what he thought was right

    That’s stupid. There is literally no rational reason to do that. You haven’t given a single reason why he should have, other than that you personally would respect him more, which I don’t believe for a second. You’d just find some other excuse to hate him if he had. His real crime was expose you to a glimpse of reality.

    Nothing he revealed was a shock, I was joking with my friends about them listening in on 2009 if not earlier. Prism was bad, and illegal and not a terrible thing that was brought to light, it did major damage to the USAs global reputation, deservedly so but that’s exactly what a Russian agent would hope to do. The real world impact of the leak was a net negative for Americans. It was great for foreign countries and terrorists. Globally it was a beneficial reveal. Had he been willing to go to jail for it the issue would have stayed in the for front and people would have put a lot of effort into getting him released, and I would have been a supporter of that initiative. I’m sure their similar programs running right now, you’d have to be a fool to think every single government is doing their damndist to find exploits and creating backdoors to spy/get Intel.

    I’m a bleeding heart liberal, and I want my country to be better than it is, I’m just not willing to prop up a Russian asset as a hero. I’m all for privacy and strong encryption, I groan and sometimes even bother to contact my representative when laws are being pushed that will weaken our protections.

    Russia is the antithesis of everything he supposedly stood for when leaking what he did.

    You go to jail for doing the right thing your a martyr, you run to Russia you’re a spy.

    Nothing he revealed was a shock, I was joking with my friends about them listening in on 2009 if not earlier.

    Yeah, but you didn’t have proof.

    The real world impact of the leak was a net negative for Americans.

    Absolutely ridiculous. You just can’t distinguish between the state’s interests and the people’s interests. So what if the US’s global image is damaged? That doesn’t affect me. If anything, I’m glad, when the US’s global image was better it meant it could get away with getting involved in stupid imperialist wars that made life worse for everyone but the ruling class. Their interests are directly opposed to mine and hurting them helps me.

    Had he been willing to go to jail for it the issue would have stayed in the for front and people would have put a lot of effort into getting him released, and I would have been a supporter of that initiative.

    Again, this is literally the only reason you’ve given for why he should’ve done that, that you personally would’ve liked him more, which I don’t believe for a second. Nobody gives a shit what you think, certainly not enough to do something stupid and self-destructive. Snowden would’ve been an idiot not to protect himself.

    MossyFeathers , in Transgender teen attempts self-mastectomy before pool party

    According to the New Zealand not-for-profit Gender Minorities Aotearoa, the wait time for bottom surgery in the public health system is 10 to 12 years.

    Holy shit, that’s a long wait time.

    fiercekitten ,

    That’s cruel. There are more doctors that are qualified and willing to perform these procedures and I would argue that it’s the ethical responsibility of the public health system to do whatever it takes to utilize these doctors.

    MossyFeathers ,

    Tbh I’m always amazed by how trans care is so… whacky.

    Like, the US is becoming more and more hostile towards trans people (especially trans women), and US healthcare means gender affirming care can be very expensive (especially surgery-related stuff). On the other hand, adults in the US can typically start HRT within a week of seeing a doctor because the US allows for informed consent; you see a doctor, request hrt, they inform you of the risks and effects, and if you consent, you can begin HRT. Then, if you have the money or really good insurance, you could be “”“finished”“” transitioning (be on hrt and have gender-affirming surguries done) within a year or two. You probably still won’t pass because I’ve been told it can take years for HRT to fully feminize/masculinize you, but at that point the only thing left is waiting for your body to do its thing.

    Then you have Canada and European countries, where, based on what I’ve seen, they tend to be more accepting of trans people and trans care tends to be covered by the government (or so I’ve heard). However, they have all kinds of waiting periods, from being forced to wait several years to ensure you’re “truly trans”, waiting again to see if your surgery is approved, waiting again for an opening, waiting again because the doctor decided to take the week of your surgery off to go on vacation, etc.

    Then you have Australia and New Zealand where you’re forced to wait and there’s no guarantee the government will cover the medical costs of transitioning.

    Why is this so hard?

    Why can’t people get their shit together so it doesn’t take a decade or more for someone to finish transitioning?

    Considering the symptoms and side effects of gender dysphoria, it’s unlikely someone suffering from gender dysphoria will be functioning at maximum efficiency. As such, while it might appear more expensive on paper, it seems like the impact of prioritizing gender affirming care (similar to how I assume people with cancer and disabilities are prioritized) would be cheaper long-term. The faster you get them care, the sooner they can start working at their maximum potential; and the sooner they start working at their maximum potential, the larger the benefit they can provide to society.

    GnomeKat ,
    @GnomeKat@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    A thing that is really frustrating about a lot of health care providers is they insist on using outdated “best practice” blood levels for trans fem HRT which puts our estradiol levels significantly lower than cis women.

    Im lucky that I have a dr in cali who is good and insists on me having proper estradiol levels but in the past they were significantly lower with other doctors. And I can absolutely tell the difference I feel so much better with my current levels and physically the effects are noticable as well.

    unreasonabro ,

    the cruelty is usually the point. It’s not like there’s an excuse, certainly not one that can be taken seriously.

    fiercekitten ,

    Yeah. Trans people and most of the major medical organizations have been presenting mountains of research and scientific fact to the ignorant and intolerant for decades, and we still have millions of people and most governments who willfully ignore it and oppose it because they have closed off their minds and fear and hate that which is different from them.

    LadyAutumn ,
    @LadyAutumn@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    Medical gatekeeping is also very much a problem. I started petitioning for bottom surgery 6 years before I was actually able to get it. Not because of any wait list or qualifications or anything like that. Purely because my doctor and my counselor thought I wasn’t ready. Getting a new doctor here (Eastern Canada) takes close to a decade. So I had to wait till they decided I was ready. I was repeatedly told that my poor mental health made it so I couldn’t get surgery. My mental health never magically got better. They just eventually changed their minds and gave me referrals. Having bottom surgery saved my life and dramatically improved my mental health. I spent 6 years in abject misery when I could’ve gotten the surgery to begin with and spent that much more time happy and moving forward with my life.

    I’m very happy to have had it and I for once in my life see a future for myself and a life that is worth living. But there is definitely a bitterness about the way that multiple health professionals all seemingly misunderstood that my anatomy was a significant contributor to my poor mental health.

    Drivebyhaiku ,

    That’s the real issue isn’t it. In an informed consent system if your GP is a transphobe or clueless or ill trained then they can deny you care based on moon logic. Theres similar issues with sterilization on all fronts. It’s rarer for vasectomies but still happens depending on where you are for the most part. You have to beg for sterilization because anything under the age of 40 is like " you’re too young - you might regret it. So I, a person who doesn’t even know you personally will tell you what is best for your situation and you’re going to have to live with it because I hold the power over your bodily autonomy in my hands."

    Like dude, I’ll sign a waiver. It’s not your lookout whether I’ll regret it or whatever - just stay in your lane and do your bloody job. Made me angry enough I could have bent rebar between my teeth with how hard my jaw was clenched.

    captainlezbian ,

    Like those are the practical arguments for informed consent, but I just keep coming back to a different reason: because it’s my body and that makes it my choice and my consequences.

    ada ,
    @ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    Then you have Australia and New Zealand where you’re forced to wait and there’s no guarantee the government will cover the medical costs of transitioning.

    To clarify, in Australia, you’re forced to wait for surgery, and the government won’t cover it. But HRT is more accessible, and covered under our public healthcare system, so once you’ve got your prescription, it’s cheap to access.

    HappycamperNZ ,

    You’ve also got to remember the US health system is user pays, but most of the NZ health system is free.

    The US system is faster because patients are customers… well insurance is but you get the idea. Ours if free, but prioritised by the needs of the whole. If you go private in NZ you have similar or better wait times.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    10-12 years is a long wait time, even for triage.

    Kase ,

    Just to add, although the US allows informed consent for adults, some of us are still required to do a certain number of months in therapy and/or provide letters from mental health professionals before we can access hrt or surgery, because that’s what some health insurance companies require. Even then, ofc, the option does exist to do informed consent and pay out of pocket.

    femtech ,

    Yeah, 12 months lived in experience, 2 therapist letters (one had to have a PhD), and one primary letter to get me bottom surgery. Also they wouldn’t even do the consultation before I get all that done so it was almost another year after that.

    Kase ,

    Oof, that’s harsh. I’m glad you managed to trudge through it. It’s not unlike how difficult, if not impossible (and expensive) it is in some states (mine included :/) to get a legal name and/or gender marker changed.

    tal ,
    @tal@lemmy.today avatar

    So, at some point, Reddit was going to have to be generating a return. Spez or no spez.

    I don’t particularly like the route they took – killing the third-party clients was annoying and I think that there were ways to be a profitable super-forum site and still have third-party clients. But it was gonna be something, and whatever they did – more ads, selling data on users, only providing some functionality to paid users – was gonna be unpopular.

    Sylvartas ,

    I would have been ok with reasonable prices for API calls. Bandwidth has a cost after all. But they so obviously set out to drive the third party apps out of business so they could sell ads in the official app/website it just disgusted me.

    Also that new mobile site is so shitty, I refuse to believe it’s not on purpose.

    lagomorphlecture ,

    I don’t get why they had to drive out 3rd party apps for that? They try to make the ads look like user content so it seems like they could have fed it into the 3rd party apps. It must have something to do with the exact placement of the ads?

    Sylvartas ,

    Idk maybe for performance tracking purposes the ads are marked as such and it’s accessible from the API

    RatBin ,

    What they didn’t see in doing so was that the core content of the site was curated mostly by people who used either old reddit or third party apps. Modding would be unnecessarily annoying without them. The content is, in fact, way worse than it used be, more importantly bots are in the open and with no counter. You can track the amount if reposts. As for mods they can be as toxic as ever, posting on reddit is hard unless you follow small subs or generic ones that let you post whatever. The site itself is the opposite of user friendly: they wanted to be an alternative to all other social media ever…but instagram, tiktok, youtube, even that deranged thing known as x, let you post peacefully amd without too many restrictions. Reddit…forget about it.

    ripcord ,
    @ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

    There were some internal docs leaked that made me think their real motivation was that they had signed some contracts for API access and pricing (probably a direct response to AI scraping), and that they were actually contractually obligated to close stuff down and/or set crazy prices. I think it may not have been about apps at all (or very little)

    prole , (edited )

    What do you think API access is? They have 100% control over how much they charge for access. There is no entity above them that they’re signing contracts with to decide pricing. There is no situation where what you just said makes any sense.

    I could have lived without third party apps. What drove me away was how they gaslit and lied to the 3rd party app developers about the costs, then started making outragious and unsubstatiated allegations about the Apollo dev.
