TIL about Roko's Basilisk, a thought experiment considered by some to be an "information hazard" - a concept or idea that can cause you harm by you simply knowing/understanding it (en.wikipedia.org)

Roko's basilisk is a thought experiment which states that an otherwise benevolent artificial superintelligence (AI) in the future would be incentivized to create a virtual reality simulation to torture anyone who knew of its potential existence but did not directly contribute to its advancement or development, in order to...

My understanding of what this thread is taking about has dropped significantly the more I read into it

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Anyone else expected this to… go somewhere? Like have an outcome?

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

What am I looking at (besides a generic neofetch on hardware that can’t load Google.com)

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

The new Snapdragon architecture makes this possible for the first time for Linux with comparable performance and lower energy requirements

Perfect for people who love emulation too. Now you can play your favorite Windows x86 games on Wine on Zink on Fex on ARM

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Holy smokes people are mad at this thread. I genuinely don’t know why. It’s a valid and good question to have.

Here’s something to get started, although I don’t use any of these so take it with a grain of salt:

  1. Fedora LTS: Approximately 6 months.
  2. openSUSE Leap: Approximately 8 months
  3. Linux Mint LTS: 2 years
  4. Ubuntu LTS: 2 years
  5. Debian: Approximately 2-3 years
  6. RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux): Approximately 3-5 years.
  7. SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE): Approximately 3-5 years

Unmirrorable? The whole thing, including the configs are open source?

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Oof. Not sure if you’re still trying, but maybe try focusing on (improving) yourself with the same dedication?

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I’m a big fan of this, but I wish more drastic theming got better love. (yes I’m aware of stopthemeingmyapp or whatever)

South Korea blasts Russia-North Korea deal, says it will consider supplying arms to Ukraine (apnews.com)

South Korea’s presidential office on Thursday condemned an agreement reached by Russia and North Korea that vowed mutual defense assistance in the event of war and said it will reconsider its policy of limiting its support to Ukraine to non-lethal supplies....

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

According to the text of the deal published by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency, if either country gets invaded and is pushed into a state of war, the other must deploy “all means at its disposal without delay” to provide “military and other assistance.” But the agreement also says that such actions must be in accordance with the laws of both countries and Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which recognizes a U.N. member state’s right to self-defense.

This seems like the bigger point

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

South Korea, while obviously a US lap dog, likes to pretend to play goodie goodie with China

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Yes, but I’m also a South Korean resident, so I think I have a bit of context for what I’m saying.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Not a citizen, just a resident

Edit: I actually tried to upload a blurred out version of my ID but Lemmy said the file was too large

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

The best thing for the world is to ensure the “defender” of land wins wars, to discourage future wars.

The best thing for South Korea is to not give North Korea any tangible reason to get upset. South Korea is saying they want to help Ukraine, because they want to please the US, but they’ll only do the bare minimum to please the US.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Blows my mind that to this day, companies don’t realize it’s a service issue. Like it’s straight up regressed. Adobe and Microsoft used to encourage piracy to help their bottom line. Now you have stupid PMs who realize they can get a good performance review by talking about how much money they’ll make/save from doing stuff like this

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

no company would accept that.

Except for a company that understands going after these people won’t benefit them?

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

According to the article, the revenue is down 40%…But the costs are also way down? So this title is totally misleading, and a bunch of Lemmies are out here celebrating because they didn’t put 2 and 2 together.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

yawn. The 2016 media ops are really paying dividends.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Heads up, check out this project. It’s pretty simple and you might be able to help out too! github.com/rozniak/xfce-winxp-tc

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

It’s a bit weird; it’s not a theme, but an application. You have to run the programs it builds and add them to your startup (i.e. the WinXP taskbar, etc)

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

We don’t have to wait until it’s “fully confirmed” to start being concerned about it. Remember climate change denial? We were in the “we don’t know if humans are causing it” phase for a while.

I also agree, let’s not jump on the anti-Musk team for this, but satellites burning up has always been a rather obvious source of pollution, and it’s good to see more discussion on it

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Can’t tell if this is sarcasm, orr

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I just can’t understand why it’s up to the husband to say no divorce while he cheats? Like what position of power does he have?

OsrsNeedsF2P , (edited )

I don’t think anyone who knows about Tiananmen square thinks the tank ran over Tank Man. But the other cases? Mmm. (Nsfw) www.cnd.org/June4th/massacre.html

Edit: lmao, post a link of evidence and you just get downvoted. I wait for the day people just call this AI generated instead

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I mean like, whether the guy who looks like paint on the road is really “squished by a tank” or not, the whole “Tiananmen didn’t happen” defense sits from anywhere between “300 people, mostly soldiers died” to “nothing happened at all”. I’m noticing you didn’t explicitly say what happened, only what didn’t, so likewise I think you’ve shown you actually know what went down that day.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Garbage article. Headline interprets like Microsoft slipped or leaked something. The article discusses why the “pros” are actually “cons”.

Found a security bug in LMDE6, need some help (i.imgur.com)

I have an older Intel laptop that has a 1600x900 display, and I find that if I put the machine to sleep, connect an external monitor with a higher resolution, and then turn it back on, the login screen doesn’t adjust to the new resolution and it reveals what I had open (see photo)....

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

This is a known Xorg issue. Distros like TAILS have patches (can’t find a source right now, but it was probably 6+ years ago). The solution is Wayland, since despite TAILS fixing it, no one else seems to have bothered.

(I have the same problem on Fedora 40 XFCE)

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

He posted online, telling his friends it was time to say goodbye. Then his friend called him up, saying he had an opportunity at his company Eternos.Life for Bommer to build an interactive AI version of himself.

It doesn’t get more tech bro than that

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Almost certainly not, although fair disclaimer, I don’t actually know. Ads need to be tailored to the user when delivered, so it’s likely the YouTube frontend requesting the next chunk of video to be an ad instead of the next chunk of video from blob storage. yt-dlp likely just requests successive chunks straight from blob storage, passing this.

If YouTube served ads by saying “point to an ad chunk next” in their blob storage, 1. Everyone would see the same ad and 2. Premium users would still see ads.

To patch this, YouTube really needs to stop serving video chunks directly from storage, but I forget the reason they haven’t done that already.

(Technical note; I’m assuming blob storage chunks contain 1-2 seconds of video and metadata pointing to the next one, like a linked list. I’m not sure if this is how YouTube works, but many video platforms do this)

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I love how Apple is flying under the radar, doing effectively the same thing, because they used the word “Private” in every heading and server name

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

“The situation at that time was that the DMZ was now overgrown with trees and the MDL mark was not clearly visible,” Lee said.

“There was no road, and the (North Korean soldiers) were moving through the bushes, and we were observing (them) even before they got close to the MDL,” Lee said.

“We believe that they did not intend to invade, considering that they immediately moved northward after the warning broadcasts and warning shots.”

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Can’t give specifics, but regarding enforcement work: We know who’s breaking the rules, but we let them get away to prevent exposing our methods.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Lmao, is the bottom one because you ask to see some ID?

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I feel like some people “lie” about rebooting their modem simply because they don’t know how to reboot it

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Save it until I can afford to spend it in a 3rd world country for at least 5x the return value

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

The death of Windows means more people will come to Linux

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

The Venn diagram of supported apps isn’t also a perfect circle. You can’t run VPNs as Flatpaks, and Flathub disallows CLI apps from being submitted (because the UX of using a sandboxed CLI app sucks). Snap doesn’t have these issues.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Helix opens it’s own GUI when you run it. It’s not a CLI app in the same sense as git. I’m curious on the others you mention, since as a packager, I’ve seen firsthand CLI apps being declined (or allowed, but only with a hidden status on flathub.org)

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

For what it’s worth, I’m impressed your bank has Linux systemd support

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

The push to change the county’s rent stabilization rules yet again was met with skepticism by Supervisors Janice Hahn and Kathryn Barger, who voted against the proposal. They said they were worried that the government was overburdening smaller property owners who rely on the rent to pay their bills.

LOOOOL

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

How are they going to identify who is opting out without being able to match it to the person in the seat…?

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Are people actually that serious about defederating from Lemmy.ml?

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Nobody in the replies mentioned it, but you could easily sign up to an instance that federates with both .ml and .world.

Will automated account migration be the next big feature?

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

The downvotes you got are the punishment for being illiterate

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Slightly related, I found out my brother’s ex killed herself. She was the president of a pretty famous University in Canada (Waterloo). Feelsjpg
