I’ve read about YouTube delaying video play, buffering, and showing a blank screen for X seconds on all videos for non-Chrome browsers.

The desktop crashes don’t sound like YouTube, but I think the rest is the genuine anti-competitive behavior Google has demonstrated. I get these 5-6 second video delays and page refreshes on Firefox and Safari periodically but never in Chrome.

Day 51 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I’ve been playing until I forget to post Screenshots (lemmy.world)

Today’s game is Half Life 2. I heard it got a UI update specifically for Steam Deck, so I had to try it. I ended up playing way more than I meant too (made it all the way to the Boat Segment and got stuck on the helicopter fight). I forgot how damn good this game is, it’s hard for me to resist playing it too and...

Easily one of the best games of all time, the whole series too. The sounds, the designs, the mechanics, the puzzles, but the story…the story is top tier.

If you have time to finish them all, you won’t be disappointed!

What quality do you associate 'stupid' within someone? (kbin.melroy.org)

Mine is the volume of their voice. If all that they can do is just talk too loudly with no reason for it and don't control the volume of their voice. That to me is a sign that you're a stupid fuck. Because people think the louder they are, the more righteous and attention seeking they are. Than it is to just listen, digest and...

Big Pharma claims lower prices will mean giving up miracle medications. Ignore them. (www.vox.com)

It is a harrowing proposition: that in trying to control drug prices for 67 million Medicare patients now, we might inadvertently prevent the development of future drugs that could save lives. Implied, if not stated outright, is that we’re putting a cure for cancer or Alzheimer’s or some other intractable disease in...

Outsourcing emotion: The horror of Google’s “Dear Sydney” AI ad | The company suggests using AI to write a child’s fan letter and the ad is so bad that Google turned off comments for it on YouTube (arstechnica.com)

If you’ve watched any Olympics coverage this week, you’ve likely been confronted with an ad for Google’s Gemini AI called “Dear Sydney.” In it, a proud father seeks help writing a letter on behalf of his daughter, who is an aspiring runner and superfan of world-record-holding hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone....

What's was your favourite fast food product that unfortunately got retired and never came back?

Here, for a while at McDonald’s there was a 🍔 called “the 1955” and it was the best, big pieces of onion, an special sauce, buns and big piece of beef with bacon (for Europe standards anyways) it disappeared once and came back for an encore only to be removed again and never return.

habitualcynic ,

Yessss!! And when they had taquitos with the different dipping sauces!

I thought he was trying to go somewhere with no extradition treaty with the US and was laid over in Russia when his passport was suspended. It’s kind of outlined here but I could see how that could be concocted and I just want to believe he was better than a Russia mole.

Something about Twisted Metal 2… absolute top of that franchise

The Half Life, Portal, and Left 4 Dead series’s bring me nostalgia like no others. Unbelievably good games

Minimum punishment for a sitting or former supreme court justice for any crime:

instant death.

I like you.

I worked with her older sister for a couple years, perfectly content being single. One day, randomly blurted out that I hated being single. Her sister asked me to describe what I wanted, I said a few things, and “You just described my sister! Let me introduce you.”

Apparently, she had already thought we would be perfect together. That was 16 years ago, and we’ve been married for almost 13. I could not ask for a more perfect person to have as my wife and dearest friend.

habitualcynic ,

That’s really sweet!

habitualcynic ,

The whole shitness of that workplace was redeemed by this one single moment from my sister in law lol.

habitualcynic ,

A couple things I value and a few childish superficial things.

I remember saying something like “why can’t I just meet a really kind, intelligent, kinda nerdy” then I forget, then “short, brown-haired girl?”

And my now-sister in law, “OMG that’s my sister!” Honestly, it feels like it was meant to be.

habitualcynic ,

Same! The cross platform availability is what keeps me coming back.

I also use a bunch and a head system that works. TickTick has been my go to for high importance tasks/reminders, then 3 more apps for various mental purposes.

Comparison is the thief of happiness.

I have many favorites, but this comes to mind often.

Fear shrinks the brain.

Is another good one.

habitualcynic ,

I like that. Also, “if they want you to be afraid, they don’t want you to think.”

habitualcynic ,

lol also true! I think of mine more in the context of when I see things from the media. If they seem to be instilling fear (omg immigrants are coming, they’re scary), it’s because they don’t want you to think critically.

habitualcynic ,

Wholeheartedly agree

habitualcynic ,

why not both?

habitualcynic ,

Ah yeah I do agree with that. I was partially referencing the meme, but also there’s those kind of people who would inconsiderately take up others’ space until the airline made them move. There’s enough to be annoyed at both! :P

What is a gender neutral replacement for man, guys, buddy, etc?

So I’ve realized that in conversations I’ll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I’ve been thinking that it’s not as inclusive to women/trans people....

Built-in step count is in the activity app! Just keep scrolling, it’s after the stand hours. Noticed it the other day, I think it’s easy to overlook.

habitualcynic ,

Ooooh that makes sense! I totally agree with you on that, I would much rather have it at a glance.

habitualcynic ,

To be fair to you, 12 year olds are the worst. Source: was 12 year old

For me, iOS works substantially better at my employer. At the end of the day, it’s better for some enterprise integration. I wish it was different, but this is probably true for many. EDIT: I’d choose Android if my employer supported it enough to do my job effectively. :(

habitualcynic ,

Oh 100%, I look at it with envy when I see reviews lol. My work doesn’t have an MDM implementation that’s compatible with that on Android. I took some inspiration from it on my iOS focus modes but it’s not the same. The way my employer has it setup, the calendar and email only work through specific apps on Android instead of device intention like native calendar and email, which inhibits push and exchange. “The shitty boxer app didn’t notify me” isn’t a good enough excuse :/ … okay end of complaining.

habitualcynic ,

“When you make something idiot proof, the world builds a better idiot.” Lol

habitualcynic ,

Love ‘Road Guy Rob’. He has a lot of great simple videos on traffic design and oddities

habitualcynic ,

Scum of the earth. They should be put to death to send a message.
