rather than just being normal and evaluating the law on ‘does it seem normal or moral to ban this’

This is the job of the legislature. To make law based on norms and morals, as well as a dozen other factors.

almost like ConStITuTUiOnALiTy is a dumb fucking way validate the law

The job of the judiciary is to rule based on what the various laws say, which obviously includes the Constitution.

Do you really want the judiciary ignoring the law and legislating from the bench? Remember, your preferred group isn’t the one in the majority.

I have never seen this shit within the last few decades in a Western military. Everyone there believes a CASEVAC will get them to a hospital where they will be saved. Even if it can’t always happen, it is the norm to do one’s best to save people, not just give up in the first seconds.

Even Level 1 charging is pretty notable, means the vast majority of your daily miles still come from charging at home. This should be achievable if you have an outside plug and an outdoor extension cable.

Though, I suspect from your statement even that isn’t possible due to ownership issues.

Putin says Russia and North Korea will help each other if attacked, taking ties to a ‘new level’ (www.cnn.com)

Vladimir Putin said Russia and North Korea have ramped up ties to a “new level,” pledging to help each other if either nation is attacked in a “breakthrough” new partnership announced during the Russian president’s rare visit to the reclusive state....

The fun part is Russia leads the CSTO, which is the same type of organization as NATO. However, three members have left it, including Azerbaijan Armenia just this year as Russia failed to hold up their commitment when Article 4 (equivalent to NATO’s Article 5) was called when Armenia Azerbaijan took land Russia considered Azerbaijan’s Armenia’s in late 2022.

Edit: Flipped the names. They are now correct.

Ah, crap, that I do. I should look at a map whenever I talk about them. It’s stored in my head in this fashion:

  • Russia’s buddy is in the west and gets disputed land taken by guy in the east.
  • Both countries start with ‘A’ and are near Turkey.

Are they going to drop the constant data collection, or is that data collection also considered ‘secure’?

Microsoft admitted that it could have taken steps to prevent two aggressive nation-state cyberattacks from China and Russia

Microsoft spent years ignoring a vulnerability while he proposed fixes to the “security nightmare.” Instead, Microsoft feared it might lose its government contract by warning about the bug and allegedly downplayed the problem, choosing profits over security

Jesus fucking Christ Microsoft.

Some states have. It’s currently an open legal question as firearm parts/accessories generally get included under 2A protections as the right to keep and bear arms is infringed if, say, triggers are illegal. It’s currently working it’s way through the courts to determine the answer to your question and we wont have any definitive answers for years.

Yeah, a friend had their basement cement cut and repaired to fix a sewage line. I can’t imagine how much more expensive that would be if they had to worry about the entire basement floor immolating when cut.

I remember it used to be quite common to install an OS and not have internet access. The OS simply lacked the correct LAN or WAN driver; alternatively one might be setting up an OS during an outage.

What would you even do with a PC that never has internet access? (apart from controlling some machinery maybe).

This is actually a massive use-case. Basically every piece of heavy machinery is using the OS it shipped with. Those systems naturally are forbidden from connecting to the internet but happily plug away at their job.

Legacy software in general is a great reason; retro gaming on period-appropriate hardware and OS, for example.

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

Retro gaming on period-appropriate hardware and OS in 20 years will. (And there likely won’t be security updates for the OS, you would be dumb to connect it to the internet)

Heavy machinery shipping with windows today does.

Your OS not having the correct lan/wan driver happens even today (just less often).

Having an internet outage happens today as well.

Yeah but none of these use cases call for Windows 11.

All the use cases I mentioned are relevant with Windows 11. There is a reason people have been yelling Linux around every corner, and it is because of continued bad decisions by Microsoft like requiring and internet connection for stuff that simply shouldn’t.

why can’t sports just be weight class? why do the genders even need to be split up?

In a specific weight class, top males will win the vast majority of the time over top females. Things like wide hips are not optimal for running, for example.

To bring actual data into the conversation, check out Olympian Women vs High School Boys. High school boys still take the vast majority of the records despite the otherwise crazy disadvantage.

A few of them have. The core issue is it doesn’t add much range, while at the same time adding more cost, weight, and complexity. On a sunny summer day you can expect to get single digit kilometers added to the range, while on a cloudy winter day you won’t get even a full kilometer added.

They do make some sense on hybrids, as they are lighter so the range increase is a bit more and people are less likely to charge a hybrid. But, they still suffer from not adding much range, while adding cost, weight, and complexity.

Edit: Auto Focus did a re-review of the Fisker Ocean, which has solar panels. Linked to the timestamp where he is talking about them.

Solar panels on the roof and hood of a car are dubiously useful. This car has panels on the sides of the doors? Those are going to get but a fraction of the light the roof ones will. This just looks like someone tried to shove as many on as possible with zero thought into the efficacy of the idea.

Ryzen laptops which feature capable integrated GPUs serve light and medium gaming tasks well. For heavy use, there are desktops, which is where the real power is. Portable systems like the Steam Deck are also hitting from the mobile side as well.

Gaming laptops have always been an extremely niche product and have gotten squeezed from all ends in recent years.

It boggles the mind this isn’t an external download you have to specifically navigate to their website to download and install. The fact it is soon to be on Win 11 systems, just a toggle away, is terrifying. Particularly since lots of people handle your personal data, while data collectors like this are on their machines (and many of those machines will have the collector turned on).

I’m really hoping this shit is banned on all government and corporate computers. But, with how poor IT competence is…such a ban will be sporadic at best.

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

This solves only the most recent of privacy concerns that were only discovered with it recently. The primary concern is the core ‘feature’ itself: Windows recording everything you do and look at.

People work with your personal data on a regular basis, you better hope not a single one of them have this ‘feature’ enabled.

Is there any significance to people using emojis that match their skin tone?

I’m asking because as a light-skinned male, I always use the standard Simpsons yellow. I don’t really see other light-skinned people using an emoji that matches their skin tone, but often do see people of color use them. Maybe white people don’t naturally realize a need to be explicit with emoji skin-tone or perhaps it’s...

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

Everyone simply saw the yellow ones as neutral toned. It’s a nice contrasting color to show the emotion and they have always done a good job representing everyone while serving their goal: to convey emotion in text.

The push for representation in emoji’s always struck me as weird since they already represented everyone. I rarely see people using them who aren’t a bit too focused on skin color in their day-to-day life.

Pentium D processors are pretty power hungry, so factor that into your thoughts. Also make sure you put a modern OS on it that is getting security updates. It probably has Win XP or Vista installed which isn’t safe to connect to any network.

It should work fine as a router as long as you don’t enable any of the packet inspection features. For basic routing and firewalling for a home network it should be plenty powerful. I would personally put a small SATA SSD in it as the main drive and ditch the 90GB HDD.

As an additional idea, if you put a larger SATA drive or two into it you could make it a NAS.

There should never have been such a ban preventing Ukraine from defending themselves. Even if you believe it made sense, at the latest it should have been lifted the day we confirmed Russia was using Iranian weapons in Ukraine.

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

At that point Russia is using foreign weapons in a country they invaded. Therefore there is absolutely no reason left Ukraine should be banned from using foreign weapons against the country invading them.

Alternative: Submit resumes directly to companies you are interested in and/or use a recruiter. The latter is surprisingly nice. Last time I used one I got lined up for phone interviews with little effort and the recruiter pushed the company forward during the hiring pipeline when the company was being wishy-washy.

The recruiter only gets full payment if you get hired and stay at your job for a full year. (And this payment does not come from you!)

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

Do a web search for recruiting firms. Find one who specifically mentions they recruit for your industry.
