It clearly implies there is some kind of safety benefit to it. But there is not.
Clicking on the ad leads to a lengthy slide show which eventually gets to the doorknob story.
All it says is aluminum foil can be used as an alternative to tape to cover doorknobs and hardware while painting.
It has nothing to do with safety and the inclusion of the phrase “when you’re home alone” was only used as clickbait to make the ad seem more important.
I might have looked it up. Even when I’m 99% sure something is a scam I often want to push a little further to understand more about how the scam operates but I don’t think I have enough skill or dedication to scambait properly.
They pay for the number of impressions as well as the number of click-throughs. More clicks on the ad = more cost for running the ad, or fewer impressions. However, it also gives more money to those hosting the ads, so it supports them imbedding them.
You can use this plugin to automate the process if you want to continue down this path. adnauseam.io
That’s freakin awesome! I absolutely love that idea/solution. Is it kinda hot in here? Why’m I all moist?
Seriously tho, is there any downside? Also, I’m still not sure I understand the point of running the ad in the first place. Why run a shitty ad that costs you money? Is the idea to get people to follow that other conspiracy site more regularly?
Advertisers pay a fee to the website where their ad is displayed every time someone clicks on it, it’s called the Pay Per Click model. It’s how websites make money off running ads. There is a small fee for displaying the ad and larger one for click throughs.
I mean… if you are like, home alone status, in a whole ass house with a bunch of doors… maybe covering the knobs in foil would make it so some kind of intruder makes more noise when opening doors, as they either handle the foil opening the door, or when removing the foil?
I was under the impression it was a safety thing. If you grab loose foil like that it will form to the hand crushing it to turn the knob and therefore you know the home has had “visitors” without you saying so.
No need to sail them seas, but maybe still use a vpn, just on case. Fun fact i heard from a friend of a friend: Youtube starts rate limiting after 50,000 audio-only video downloads, until you have a new IP.
I’ve also noticed that sometimes it downloads the wrong versions of songs. While my Spotify playlist has the album version of a song, it might sometimes download a live performance audio or a reprise version.
I have hundreds upon hundreds of songs in my Spotify music library. Downloading them one by one sounds like hell. And then I wouldn’t be discovering new music either.
No but direct downloads are all the rage. Here are my two favorite sites for free music. Every track is available in either 320k MP3, or FLAC lossless. So they’re even better than Limewire ever was:
I’ve been pretty happy with YouTube music. I got legacied in due to Google Music shutting down and thought I would hate it, but I’ve had zero complaints. Plus, it comes with free YouTube Premium, so I haven’t seen an ad in years.
I have so many complaints, Google Play music was fine. It did exactly what I wanted it to.
YouTube music is like an alien looked at that app, and tried to recreate it exclusively by smashing it’s forehead against a keyboard until an app that started most of the time came out.
I would actually argue that Google Play Music was the best music streaming app that I’ve used. It was great being able to upload music from CDs of small local bands and have it right in there with the other streaming music.
Just today I had a hankering to listen to a specific song through my android auto, and instead of just being able to verbally ask the unit for that song, or even being able to search through the atrocity that is the YouTube Music interface on my head unit, I had to pull over, pull out my phone, search for the band, then click the uploads tab (because uploaded music does not show with the regular search results) and then click the song to get it to play.
It’s not optimal, and I would like for uploaded music to just show up in the regular search, but there is a top navigation bar where you can just switch between where to search (uploads being one of the options). Also YTM has the upside of showing YouTube uploads as well, I could always find obscure bonus EPs that only came with the physical CD because someone uploaded it, which is really handy
Yes and the glorious “playing near you” feature of Play Music. That made the best recommendations for local shows, and I mean local, within a few miles, not just bands I’d listened to but always relevant and often small shows! That feature, I found several new bands I liked that way and good live music. YouTube has nothing like that. Also interface not as intuitive, more cluttered. My kids like it better because they do like having the videos available, but as I do not give a fuck about that but do like live music this is still not as good as the Play Music.

You think they that much care and attention into the app?
But seriously, yeah, I had pretty much the same experience -Google Play Music just worked beautifully, whereas YouTube Music was a steaming turd on Android. I gave up after six months and two phones and went to Deezer, never looked back
I would say the same myself. They don’t do the worst job for music discovery either which is important to me. Amazon Music drove me nuts constantly recommending Cage the Elephant and other well-known (profitable) artists instead of obscure music similar to my tastes.
Same. Honestly, I expected YTM to make things worse. That’s usually how those kinda things go. But it actually did get better for me. I jumped to Google Play Music because it had better selection than Spotify (at least back then). YTM kept that, but fixed the issues I was having with the desktop browser player sometimes getting stuck. And the more recent support for lyrics that are synced to the music is great.
Their queueing system sucks. All I want to do is queue up some songs but instead YTM fills my queue with tons of crap I’ve never listened to before because that’s how they make money. They put my manually queued songs at the END of the queue so I have to move them up 20+ spaces. There’s literally no way to do it other than creating a custom playlist every time I listen to music, and they intentionally made that take more clicks/taps than queuing. I don’t get how people are ok with the YTM app, it’s terrible.
I hate YTM and I hate that I can’t cancel it because they bundle it with YouTube premium, which my partner uses every day. Screw Google and they anti-consumer manipulative bs.

wrong.
you can disable automatic queuing by hitting the ‘auto-play’ switch in UP NEXT
you can queue songs by long-pressing and hitting ‘play next’ (which will put it in front of the queue) or ‘add to queue’ (which will put it in my the end
No, I’m not wrong. Option 1 does not exist on my phone. There is no switch.
And the “play next” feature also sucks. I don’t want to “play next”. I want to build a queue like literally any other music app and that isn’t what “play next” does.
Edit: I don’t see that “auto-play” switch on the web app in Safari either.
No. I’m not wrong, and I don’t appreciate you repeatedly telling me I am when you obviously have no clue what I’m looking at.
It isn’t there. I’m on Android 13 with the latest version of the app. There is no “auto-play” toggle anywhere. I’d upload screenshots to prove it but lemmy is throwing exceptions. I’ve checked every tab and settings page as well.
So I finally figured it out. this is how that toggle works:
it only appears when you manually search for a song or select a song from certain groups on the home page.
it does not appear to appear if you select a song from “listen again” or “quick picks” in which case the app forces you to listen to whatever is in their queue unless you manually clear the queue.
oh yeah, you are right-ish. it doesn’t show up if you launch a “radio”, which innately is a automatic, end-less playlist of similar music. I do agree though that this should be more visible in the UI
The new API has the exact same free limit. They’re just dropping support for the old API soon and people who want to depend on the old version will need to pay for its continued support because they want to push everyone onto the new site/API
If you sign up and upload a single file it goes to 50. If you upload 51 subtitles it’s 100. If you upload 101 or more it goes to 200, and if you upload 1001 it goes up to 300.
I’m gonna be real, I totally forgot that planes have middle lanes. Every plane that I’ve ever been on has been a relatively small in comparison. Some of them fucking frighteningly so. When my knees are touching the back of the pilot I’m usually having concerns other than the legroom.
These will not see the light of day until the industry coughs up enough money to buy off enough legislation oversight to make the FAA egress rules “agreeable”.
True, though it would be horrifically uncomfortable to be forced to sit like that for 4 hours without the ability to shift positions. have your nose so close to somebody’s fart hole who just spent an hour at the airport’s cold stone creamery for an international flight.
DVT is an issue if you’re immobile for any decent length of time. Your position doesn’t really matter too much. That’s why they want you up and walking immediately as soon as possible after a surgery and why they will often put patients with an extended stay in the hospital on blood thinners.
… I could fly with my dog then? (I’ve not traveled with her, because being alone in the cargo sounds like a torment I would not wish on anyone). But if I can be there, too, that’s a whole other scenario
Though tbf, with planes how often do emergencies fall between the “it’s dangerous to stay here” and “you can get off the plane safely if you’re quick” thresholds? I’d think that due to their nature, most situations will either be “no rush” or “not much we can do about it now”. Things like emergency exits seem more like safety theatre than anything else IMO.
People (guys usually) also answer like this when they are trying to tell you exactly what you want to hear so that you’ll sleep with them. They feel like if they give any wrong answer early on, they’ve lost their chance. It’s a very manipulative mindset. He was like a deer in the headlights, not knowing if any answer he gave would be the right answer since he doesn’t know her at all yet. So he stalls, hoping she’ll drop it.
Or he might just be an idiot.
Either way, drop them and move on to somebody who will be real with you.
In other words, playing games, i.e trying to “tick her funne bone” so he gets someone else to play instead of himself. But what most of those guys fail to acknowledge is that “tickling her funne bone” takes time – it’s not a “free pussy pass” of any sort that you “say it”, and she goes “WHOOAAA fuck me mister! Fuck me right NOW!”. That is not “acting tough” or smart, but acting like a douche.
Yeah I may not be a relationship expert but if I have to lie for an ice breaker not even a deep question just an ice breaker I don’t think that relation will work
Yeah, that was my thought as well. This is the type of person who is only going to say something of they think it will impress you. The second possibility is that they will share nothing of themselves, period. In either case, they don’t seem like good relationship material.
Nah it’s one of those things where some guys just prefer to talk about what they think matters to everyone, their job or financial conditions, music or other personal stuff might just be an extra on their minds
I suppose I must have at some point lol. Chrome doesn’t list it specifically but I did have website notifications on. I guess another solution would be let them finish deleting my account for inactivity 😂
One thing to remember in the future, is that recent versions of Android let you long-press on a notification(or half-drag in some modded OEM versions) and it’ll tell you what App sent that notification, and even give you options to disable that specific notification or all notifications from that app in general.
I’ve literally never even seen a website notification. I wasn’t aware they were a thing that existed. I imagine if you follow these simple steps, you too can enjoy the internet without fear.
I’ve done tech support for a few elder relatives, and most of them have a wall of browser notifications to a bunch of random crap, because they say yes to every popup that appears 🤦♂️
It’s pretty concerning that their first reaction to a random question is yes…
Just another type of popup I have my ad/script blockers block. As much as I hate that, I hate sites that don’t even let you back the fuck out properly even more.
CBS News, which is often shared on aggregates like this and Reddit, was one of the worst. I’ve had shady scam/porn sites that were easier to go back/close than CBS’s god damn website.
They’re useful in some cases. I used to use the Twitter website (PWA) and it was nice to get notifications without having to install the full bloated app. I use them for forums and web-based chat (like TheLounge IRC client), too
It’s the same mentality as people just pressing “Next” in an installer and wonder why their browser homepage is hijacked or why there are programs that they never installed. People see the “Block” or “Accept” options in the notifications dialog and press Accept without even reading, especially on mobile browsers (Chrome) where it asks you as if it’s a system message.
It’s tough for me to accept that these poor people still exist haha. I remember back in 2005 or so clearing upwards of 5 toolbars from various relatives’ browsers, but not so much since. I suppose notification management is the modern equivalent.
These people will never go away. The people have 16 push messages an hour, are the same people who had 7 IE toolbars, are the same people who had their VCR blinking 12:00, are the same people who couldn’t get the channel on their radio, are the same people who (presumably) kept buying snakeoil potions.
These are the people who would rather be annoyed at something than fix it, they’re the people who will spend hours living with problems rather than spend 1 hour learning how to resolve it.
Quite like the way that iOS handles it now. The only sites alllowed to request to send notifications are ones you have added to your Home Screen as PWAs
“Fuck no, I’m only putting up with your website’s bs to read this article, and fuck off with your auto play video. Me hitting pause and scrolling down does not mean I want you to make it float on my screen and resume playing.”
Can we please stop with all the posts about reddit? Jesus christ you guys it’s a website, not your crazy ex. Lemmy is never going to surpass reddit in popularity when the only thing on the frontpage besides beans is “reddit this, reddit that”.
Tbh you all need to get used to it for a while, every day new people join and they wanna talk about their migration, it’s what’s going on for them right now, you had your moment let them have theirs
Digg was rarely brought up on Reddit until valid comparisons were able to be drawn between platforms. The elevated Reddit talk on this site will naturally subside in due time.
Yeah it seems most of the posts on the front page are about Reddit or about how proud people are of using Lemmy etc I just want to see some actual content :(
It’s not a sports team mentality. The CEO pretty much disparaged a lot of users who were actively engaging in profit-making ventures for Reddit. Moderators, being unpaid spam filters, were lauded as entitled brats (landed genetry). He also explicitly got mad that people were using “his” content, content that Reddit never made yet is happily wants to profit off of. He did all of this while basically calling third-party app developers leeches despite them making apps with features Reddit’s native app lacks.
People want to see Reddit fail because Reddit pissed off the people that generated their value. People want to see Lemmy succeed because it is federated and cannot be abused like a central platform.
I do imagine those type of people exist too, but probably not that much on Lemmy. Think of the 4chan type that love their “tribe” stirring up drama in other “tribes”. Lots of that still on Reddit too, and hopefully it stays over there.
Honestly, I’m really trying to like Lemmy. I feel like none of the good communities came over here, just the one’s you mindlessly scroll through. I just looked for a fitness community yesterday and the one i found had like 5 posts. There is basically no communities for any of my hobbies. It seems like most people stayed on Reddit, except for the techy people. It’s a shame because I really want to support the idea of federation and I do like the website.
Be the change you want to see. There are probably other people looking for those coversations, but see low engagement and move on. The more you post the more attractive it makes the community for other people.
I have also found that even if there are fewer comments, other people tend to respond and have more discussions.
I do have alot of hope that well see the community continue to grow & hopefully more activity as people search out reddit alternatives.
The endless scrolling communities are the easiest to move. They’re low hanging fruit. One of the other replies to you here nailed it… without a massive community of millions, the future of Lemmy rests on the more modestly sized community here willing to actually come out of their lurk and not just respond to posts, but to start posts on their own and actually drive the content.
I feel the same way about music production-related communities here. I just don’t have much to ask and I suck pretty badly at it so I don’t feel like I’m good enough to drive content/discussions lol
Probably not what you mean, but if you wanna start doing anything, I’ve got a com specifically for sheet music and tabs, and God Almighty does it blow. It could use a fresh insight.
I’m one of the unwashed, ignorant music production hobbyists who can’t play a lick of anything on an actual instrument, and certainly can’t read sheet music (I figured out tablature a long time ago when I was trying to teach myself guitar and have forgotten since). I can noodle around on a 25-key MIDI keyboard well enough - like I have a good handle on the patterns for different keys and scales on the keyboard, but I can’t actually play. I’d take you up on the invite, otherwise.
I initially had the same lament, but since we’re early adopters of this tech, it really is on us to build the communities here. If you want to discuss something, just post a thread. Even if no one replies right away, as people start coming they will start engaging with posts that are already there.
That’s a fair point, I noticed if I open baconreader, I can still see my subscribed sub list. I need to learn how to make subs on here, and as you suggest, either find them, or get off my ass and make them myself.
On a nice side note, being an early adopter, I was able to get my username back without some damned number stapled on the end.
It’s an online community that people have been using for decades. The fact that many of us can’t use it anymore is a real issue, even if it isn’t relevant to you (believe it or not).
I can for sure see both sides of this one. I had ditched all other social media years ago, and baconreader was my one guilty pleasure.
If I had my phone in my hand, I was catching up with other old skaters like myself, reading about the latest trends in tech, or browsing the daily news.
The tag line of “Front page of the internet” was quite literally true for me. That was the portal through which I found content.
In the weeks leading up to the June 30th, I felt a strong sadness, what was I going to do with my screen time? I had created a very custom space using baconreader that neither the reddit app, or to be fair, Lemmy, could provide.
While I am really enjoying learning about Lemmy, and I feel the quality of the post and comments here are far better, it’s going to take time to find and/or develop those niche communities again.
I do however agree, and the ex analogy is spot on, that the last thing I want is for this community to just be a bitch fest about what once was.
Give people a bit of time to vent, it hasn’t even been a week since a decades long experience came crashing to a halt through no fault of ours.
It’s not actually. That’s the second store they claim is the first. The real first was on Western. Coffee is the same though, you’re right, better to go to the roasterie
This I can actually weight in on a bit. They have their recipe under full version control and plant operations can only adjust it slightly without HQ doing an override. Not their air waste handling however, that is under local control.
My family ran a local sandwich shop for years. Here’s the problem.
If this is downtown, the local sandwich shop isn’t even there, in part because Starbucks helped price them out of being able to rent. Every supermarket now has a sandwich counter too, so local sandwich shops don’t do well in shopping centers either. Fast food has slightly improved their quality over the years so that’s more competitors at the low end. And Subway, period.
You’re paying for the convenience at Starbucks and in some cases convenience is valuable. If you don’t care about time and can go out of your way to a local sandwich shop, you get better food for less.
I was in an area like that once. It felt weird. Like I stepped into some alternative earth history where the franchises and chains all had different names. It was basically the same items for sale however.
Idk…local independent shops aren’t necessarily cheaper. There is a local coffee shop somewhat by me and it’s more expensive than Starbucks. Independent places don’t have the advantage of mass scale like the big name fast food and chain places do. When I go independent, I often find myself paying more money for less convenience. So it’s not even just convenience that you’re sacrificing
Yeah that can be true. Not all local businesses are competitively run.
While it’s true they don’t have the same economies of scale as large corporations, they also don’t have the same overhead. Starbucks coffee stands support a skyscraper full of bureaucrats somewhere. And Starbucks corporate has a stock price to worry about. Local shops don’t have all that crap, and can often get away with charging less. My dad just charged 15% below the corporate shop down the block, as a rule, and it was still profitable.
Nobody goes to Starbucks for good coffee, they go because it’s the same everywhere. Sometimes I want to go get a great coffee somewhere they know how to pull a decent shot, and sometimes I want brownish sugarmilk.
“We should just build a wall around your state and force it to secede. All the LGBT+ and POC should relocate immediately because it’s not safe to live there.”
“What about all the people who can’t afford to move? What about all the people living on tribal land?”
“Oh, them? Hmmm. They should move, too. Again.”
The fact is, right-wing extremism shouldn’t be tolerated anywhere. Putting all the fascists “on an island” doesn’t fix anything because there will always be children and other people who never asked to be there, yet have to suffer.
Diffuse sanctions, with exile being used in extreme cases
But remember that hierarchical systems and states will always devolve into fascism given time, and the number of people calling for fascism would greatly decrease, given a different system
Yes but look at the alternative: a country united under far right rule. We suffered for 4 years of that and are looking at another 4 years of it if the dumbass anti-Biden memes are taken seriously by enough sheeple.
To make it abundantly clear, for most people on earth, and for most of human history, being poor was and is not a blocker to moving. In fact it’s a great enabler. Comfortable middle income people don’t move.
He’s not talking in good faith. I’m married to a first-gen immigrant from Mexico. I can tell you how “they” move. Unless they’re rich out the gate, in which case there’s a completely different process, they save up money for years, ask for money from relatives, live in extreme discomfort, and then eventually are able to move.
Once established, it’s not like “they” can pick up at any time and relocate. Now they’re trapped in three or four jobs working the entire day, with still barely enough money for rent and food.
Eventually, some of “them” might be fortunate enough to be able to afford the massive investment of time and money for residency and maybe even citizenship.
Maybe even some of “them” will fall in love and get married and start a beautiful life together.
But maybe “they” and even their spouse have misfortune. Healthcare can totally collapse you. Maybe “they” and their spouse save up money for years, but it’s never enough. “They” have got PTSD from their prior life experiences, and their spouse develops health problems. Neither of them want these things to happen, but one ends up in and out of psych wards and psychiatrists’ offices, and the other ends up shitting himself for more than five years, finally after thousands and thousands of dollars discovers he has celiac, but has also fucked other things up in the meantime by developing addiction to alcohol and opiods, which are so easy to become addicted to in this society. So their big plans to move to the big city keep falling through. “They” might lie awake at night feeling tremendous guilt about this, on top of everything else, even though it’s not “their” fault.
That’s how “they” move, and that’s how many of “them” might not be able to just fucking relocate like some privileged neckbeard from lemmy.world suggests.
I know many other immigrants and refugees. I know many similar cases.
What did I say for you to badmouth me here, exactly? And why do you keep putting “they” in quotes? I can tell you’re waiting for some big gotcha moment. What is it?
It’s incredible how that decision fucked the country for decades. One of the best examples why “direct democracy” does not guarantee good decisions just because it was the people’s choice.
Ah, okay, so the referendum was just more like a consultation whether brexit should happen, but the badly done legislation came afterwards (which people probably wouldn’t have voted for)?
People were simultaneously told different things by different people on what would happen of the country voted leave. A lot of it obviously false even at the time.
People might have known what they were voting for. But what they were voting for had no basis on what the government would actually do.
Then we had the prime minister who held the referendum resign.
A new prime minister is chosen in a private election amongst members of the conservative party (about 100,000 votes will do it normally but no one actually runs against them). This becomes a theme.
There is legislation passed which essentially puts a clock on the process. If nothing passes we’d just revoke laws and break treaties.
This was meant to scare the EU into giving us what we wanted. The EU was not overly concerned.
The government put some very shoddy legislation together. We got a pretty poor deal from the EU, well we were pretty desperate.
The government couldn’t pass that legislation
We had an election for a new government
The government lost seats and lost their majority
The government then joined with a religious extremist party in Northern Ireland to give them a majority.
The shoddy legislation becomes not only shoddy but also more extreme, It still can’t pass.
The prime minister is ousted by their own party.
We get a new prime minister.
They still haven’t decided on the legislation but they tell everyone what they want to hear.
We have an election
The government gets a big working majority
The shoddy extreme legislation, which we now know from first hand accounts the prime minister didn’t understand, still can’t pass.
The government literally breaks the law and closes parliament illegally to try and run the clock closer to the point where we take a bonfire to massive ammous of legislation.
The government are then forced back into the house by the courts
Eventually at the last moment a deal is passed. It’s really bad for the UK economy, and the UK in general.
The UK leaves the EU. Northern Ireland doesn’t. Well it sort of does.
COVID and Another 2 prime ministers later and Brexit deals are still being negotiated.
Essentially he EU has everything it needs. It’s protected the interests of bordering nations like the Republic of Ireland and France. The UK has increased friction on trade, labour issues.
The current big issue is that France no longer helps us stop people crossing the channel. That was an EU agreement. So our government, now spends it’s time and energy trying to deport people to Rwanda, breaking the entirely separate European Convention on Human Rights Churchill’s government basically wrote and passed after the second world war.
It’s worth noting that this government has had a vote share of 36.1% pre referendum in 2015 36.9% post referendum in 2017 42.4% post deadlock in 2019 (with the opposition getting 40%)
The conservative party got that lock in 2019 on 55% of the seats with 42.4% of the vote
Since then they’ve rotated people in and out of government to essentially do the bidding of the one who pays the most into their individual campaign funds against each other.
The government refuse to allow an election even while they’re essentially changing constantly.
We haven’t really got democracy in this country. We disenfranchise a lot of people through our electoral system by design. We concentrate power to a minority.
However what went missing after Brexit was the Dublin convention where migrants could be turned back to the first EU country they entered, in this case France.
I think the government tried to negotiate a returns agreement with the french who basically just said “Non!” and that was it. There is a deal where the UK pays France to patrol their coastline and stop migrants however. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong about this last part.
Yeah. From when I first joined reddit to until I left, I’ve never ever seen the video player actually fucking working. It’s like a McDonalds ice cream machine, always broken.
Meeh, nothing new, service menus with the full picture have been around for decades. Just download a warezed service manual for your product and you can fix it yourself.
Same thing is happening with printers and every other piece of hardware out there that runs any kind of software on it.
We’ve seen this behavior throught history numerous time, keeping it in the family I mean, this is nothing new. As long as people keep bying food in McDonalds and complaining how McDonalds made their son/daughter cry, they’ll keep pushing their shitty products. My son starts crying over no ice cream… son, I’m sorry, but even the king doesn’t eat something that’s not available, get used to it, that’s life.
I never understood why people complained about this. Reddit videos always worked fine for me in RiF. Then I found out they don’t work in the official app. WTF?
It worked just fine in Infinity and on a desktop browser, never in the official Reddit app. But I guess Reddit couldn’t stand the fact that a free, ad-free app worked better than the official app.
Also Lemmy loads WAY faster than Reddit these days
Look up the email for their legal department and demand they cancel all fraudulent bookings under your name. Play dumb a little so they take it up with marketing.
Agreed, but it can be useful sometimes. For instance, I’m writing this in the Voyager app, if I tap a link it will open it in Mulch. I also have UntrackMe, with that I can use any app for the link. The simplified view can also sometimes work when an app uses Android System Webview as it’s browser engine.
The last Firefox on android that really worked for me with the about:reader?url=http://… Ability to force pages into it was 68, which I keep around for that reason.
Most pages. You click the button on the right hand side of the address bar when it’s visible and it’ll always work. On some pages the button is hidden, so I’m guessing those don’t have an obvious way to format for reader mode.
Never “UBlock” always use “UBlock Origin”.“UBlock origin” is way better(filters) than UBlock(which has an accepted ads program, also owned by Adblock Plus). Its available for Firefox android.
The first time I saw a bag like that, I was shocked as well. Seems like just the worst idea to use plastic to create tea bags. Turns out it is and they weren’t made out of plastic. It’s a starch based fiber that is biodegradable. I don’t think you could have plastic tea bags here in the EU in any case. I’d wager yours isn’t plastic either. Yeah, so you probably got mildly infuriated over nothing, just like I did the first time I saw one of these 🤷
I can’t really find a source for it, but I remember the EU banning plastic in tea bags quite recently, a few years ago at most. Here in the Netherlands, a lot of tea bags contain(ed) plastic as some kind of sealant.
Also, a lot of tea contains sugar, for no good reason whatsoever.
In the form of fruit or added? If it’s the latter, they will have messed up something as simple as tea even further. When they started packaging them in airtight plastic (preventing one from smelling what you are considering to buy) and wrap every single tea bag in plastic, I already got mad.
Tic Tacs say 0g sugar in the nutrition facts, even though they’re mostly sugar. They can do this because they aren’t required to report quantities of sugar below 0.5g, but the serving size is 1 tic tac or, conveniently, 0.49g.
That’s a US thing I think, which doesn’t make sense btw.
In Europe you are required to report the nutrition facts per 100g. Any other size is optional. In Italy Tic-Tacs have 94.5g of sugar per 100g of product www.ferrero.it/Tic-Tac#expand-jump-1
So if you are unsure about the nutrition facts, check the European website
I agree that it’s nonsense, and thanks for pointing out that I can look up European nutrition facts – i’m gonna start doing that. I wish we’d do the per 100g thing, but we don’t which makes it easier for companies to game the system. My point was that nutrition facts don’t always tell the whole story, especially if your country’s regulatory bodies have been lobbied into submission by the companies they are supposed to be regulating, so finding out if your tea has added sugars may not be as simple as looking on the box.
Regular teabags are sometimes made using non-biodegradable plastic - be sure to buy those made with this starch based plastic. When I first saw biodegradable teabags I was surprised, I thought teabags were made of paper. Not so, it turns out.
there’s still a decent chance it’s only industrially biodegradable: at higher temperatures and pressures than a good ol’ home compost pile normally ever gets near. It could still be a bit infuriating.
This is almost always the case. If it’s biodegradable at room temperature and pressure, it’ll be degrading once you get it.
We’re probably best off converting most of our things into industrially biodegradable products, and then having our waste go to composting plants instead of landfills.
Actually, I would like it if it started its answers with “IIRC…”. That way, it wouldn’t sound so sure of itself when hallucinating, and I’d feel like I could gently correct it by telling it that it might be misremembering. Either way, it’s more accurate to think of an AI as trying to remember from all that it’s been taught than for it to come across as if it knows the correct answer.
