Gretchen now believes that Jonathan died of a drug overdose. The reported presence of fentanyl in his body makes her wonder if the meth had been laced with it. But she doubts authorities will be able to answer that question. “They can’t even do the job of notifying a dead person’s next of kin,” Gretchen said. “They probably just thought, ‘Another drug addict, gone.’”

All but guaranteed. Cops found a dead man with drugs in his system. Why would they care? They probably got angry they were even called to deal with it.

That photo of the gravesite where he was buried is depressing. I know friends in places like that. I’m going to end up in a place like that. We didn’t, and don’t, have family. This man did. He didn’t deserve this…

I started using reddit in 2011. Was nuts to see the changes it underwent. A lot of them bad.

Since leaving reddit during that protest, been more than happy to call Lemmy home. Especially when I go back to browse reddit occasionally and see how incredibly toxic and negative it is all the time. I don’t know if I was blind to it before or if it got worse. Every comment thread is awful. They focus on the negative of everything and are just bitter and angry.

Place sucks ass.

Bro if you comment in a subreddit the mods don’t like you’re instantly banned, even if ironic. Mods over there are on a power trip and the lack of a modlog means zero accountability.

Stamets ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

Well yeah they’re going to exist everywhere. But with Lemmy you have some accountability. On reddit you have none.

As for bans with no notifications, that’s not on the mods. That is on the developers of Lemmy and why so many people are frustrated with them. They’re ignoring admins, have no real timeline on feature development, and aren’t focusing on major issues that have been reported. The Lemmy Devs keep dragging their feet and if they’re not careful it could end up with someone making a lemmy competitor that still works with Lemmy. I know I’d go straight for it as a mod and as a user.

Ima be real here but if someone didn’t watch the Game Awards then they’re probably not going to watch a video about the game awards. Especially when everything in it could be made text with zero loss of information.

Yeah this doesn’t work well with Riker when the dude is a bastion of morality and openly refuses people who haven’t, or cannot, consent.

Stamets ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

I use it fairly regularly for extremely basic things. Helps my ADHD. Most of it is DnD based. I’ll dump a bunch of stuff that happened in a session, ask it to ask me clarifying information, and then put it all in a note format. Works great. Or it did.

Or when DMing. If I’m trying to make a new monster I’ll ask it for help with ideas or something. I like collabing with ChatGPT on that front. Giving thoughts and it giving thoughts until we hash out something cool. Or even trying to come up with interesting combat encounters or a story twist. Never take what it gives me outright but work on it with GPT like I would with a person. Has always been amazingly useful.

Past month or two that’s been a complete dream. ChatGPT keeps forgetting what were talking about, keeps ignoring what I say, will ignore limitations and stipulations, and will just make up random shit whenever it feels like. I also HATE how it was given conversational personality. Before it was fine but now ChatGPT acts like a person and is all bubbly and stuff. I liked chatting with it but this energy is irritating.

Gimme ChatGPT from like August please <3

To be fair they wanted to execute a child for tripping. Fuck the Prime Directive in that case and fuck that planet. There should very much be a clause for protecting your own citizens provided they’re literal children.

I’m sorry but that entire blog post is complete garbage and not worth even remotely paying attention to.

The majority of it is whining that Wil promoted a blocklist on twitter. That blocklist was originally made to block trolls and stuff but it ran out of support. One of the people working on it pushed their own which Wil supported. What Wil didn’t know, and what many other people who were sharing the tool has no idea about, was that the user had introduced personal blocks into that list and used it as their own thing to go trans people they had beef with. Wil openly admitted to not knowing this and trying to fix the problem in his own blocklist. The article then seems to bash Wil repeatedly for this fact while leaning on “Well he didn’t share the tools enough to fix the problem!” as the sole reason why Wil should be shamed for this mistake. He made a mistake. He was not actively targeting trans people or bashing them. Framing it that he was is the most disingenuous bullshit I can think of.

“However, the most recent dust-up with Wheaton wasn’t about trans specific issues at all but over his friendship with Chris Hardwick.” Also not a remotely valid complaint as the accusations against Chris Hardwick were made by one woman, was investigated, and found to be demonstrably false. I’m not about to shame Wil for being friends with someone who didn’t do anything wrong. So much so that I’m going to quote Wil Wheaton himself on that debacle because I refuse to put anymore effort into it.

I’m not going to apologize to people who were let down by me, because I waited for the facts to come in instead of rushing to join their angry mob. Chris was investigated multiple times and cleared of every accusation, by all of them. And that’s still not good enough for some people, who I also will not apologize to. If ANYTHING his accuser said were true, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Because fundamental values matter. I am not and will not be friends with someone who sexually assaults another person or any of the other things she lied about, and I’m insulted that you think I would be.

Let me be really clear about this: she didn’t exaggerate. She didn’t take things out of context. She straight up LIED. She made things up that aren’t true. She lied about multiple events that I and others witnessed. And there is so much more you don’t know about, because it was never made public. So I didn’t make a friendship exception, because there was no friendship exception to be made. After the facts came in, I stood with and supported my friend who didn’t do any of the things he was accused of doing. I stood by my friend who was cleared multiple times by multiple investigations. I stood by my friend who I had LONG and DIFFICULT conversations with, as I went through every single accusation with him, in my personal effort to get to the truth.

I know there are people who just don’t want to hear this, because they would possibly feel bad about being part of that angry mob, but that doesn’t make it less true: Chris was in a toxic relationship that was unhealthy and horrible. I had a front row seat to it. They were TERRIBLE together. They fought all the time. They brought out the absolute worst in each other. It was awful. All of that is true. And none of the things she said about him in her essay happened. That is also true. She made it all up, because, in her own words, she couldn’t let him “win” when they broke up, whatever the fuck that meant.

I’ve given you a lot more of my time than I wanted to. I’m just real sick and tired of this lie about Chris going unchallenged by people who paid attention to the lie and then either ignored or rejected the truth when that truth came out.

So to recap: Wil Wheaton is “problematic” for making a genuine mistake and for backing up his friend who did nothing wrong.

Yeah. Doesn’t seem that problematic to me.

Stamets OP ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

Well, no, it must be left in because if you stick with your part of “every crazy request” then it completely ignores the entire spirit and purpose of the Prime Directive. Starfleet isn’t the be all and end all of morality. Their decisions affect them and the people within it but they’re not “Team America: Space Police.” They don’t go around judging which laws are good and which aren’t. ESPECIALLY when that perspective comes from them and them alone. Different cultures have different beliefs. Ignoring them and imposing your own on everyone is imperalistic as hell and directly against what Starfleet stands for.

Adding a clause to children works for me because the only purpose is to protect the children. The Prime Directive is still able to stand and work between cultures but this way Starfleet is able to say “Our cultures matter too and our culture says children whos brains aren’t done developing shouldn’t be executed for a mistake.” Sure it’s still fucked up that they’d do it to adults but they’re adults. They made their decision and their decision led to them doing stupid shit on an alien planet, fucking around and finding out.

If you want to make a point you can do so without needing to bash newer Treks for absolutely no reason. Just tired of this petty behavior. I’m out. I’ve got no time for this nonsense.

Stamets OP ,

Stamets OP ,

Exactly. I don’t want to do this shit but if I see someone lying or actively misrepresenting reality then I’m going to point it out.

Stamets OP ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

I think you’ve considerably misunderstood what the Prime Directive is… It doesn’t just apply to unevolved people. It also applies to civilizations that have warp too.

Also literally no, that is not what it means and is an insane comparison.

Stamets OP ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

You reflecting on yourself, hun?

Stamets OP ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

“What happened? No not like that. I require my information to be spoon fed or in bite sized chunks.”

Bruh.

Stamets OP ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

Wrong. I dunno why so many people falsely believe this. The Prime Directive applies to EVERY civilization. Not just pre-warp ones. By that logic, Picard wouldn’t have had a problem taking Wesley in that episode because those people had warp access.

Stamets OP , (edited )
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

Well given your incredibly hateful and transphobic comment that violates the instance rules, not sure you’re gonna have a choice in that, bubba.

Stamets OP ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

No. You just don’t know what you’re talking about lol

Might as well be listening to a Republican scream about climate change. Same ignorant/uneducated energy lmao

Stamets OP ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

No. Your comment is wrong.

They openly are defending a known extreme transphobe who supports TERFS and donates to them. They underplayed the transphobia. They suggested that being bigoted against trans folks is okay because they’re a small subset of the population. They said that others were wrong for saying that she’s a transphobe despite her transphobic behavior. By saying that, they have openly stated their opinion. They didn’t need to say anything more. If you defend a transphobe thats because you are a transphobe.

The only person here who is naive as fuck is you and I am not giving you another second of my time.

Stamets ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

Stamets ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

Well, I mean that’s a lie. “Good intentions don’t make rocket fuel.” The first rocket that was ever designed was designed specifically to go to space. It was used in WW2 by the Nazis but its creator said “The rocket worked perfectly, but it fell on the wrong planet.” Those good intentions are needed for every step of space exploration. You don’t get to suddenly become a rampant narcissistic, misogynistic, arrogant piece of human garbage the second that you clear the gravity well of your home planet. You hold true to those purposes because they will inform your every decision. If you start doing horrible things in the pursuit of a lofty goal, you corrupt that goal and all actions you take in the future. You will be looking through things in a dirtied, bloodied lens. Or, as someone once put it far better…

“You cannot explain away a wantonly immoral act because you think that it is connected to some higher purpose.” - Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Whether you do good things or bad things is who you are. If you start taking terrible actions then you become a terrible person. Or, as the man again once said…

“It’s our morality that defines us. It’s part of the truth of our existence.”

Then there’s the fact that Elon constantly shits on everyone below him. Guess what? There’s a few quotes for that too. Here are my favorites.

“No being is so important that he can usurp the rights of another.”

“You know, there are some words I’ve known since I was a schoolboy. “With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably.” Those words were uttered by Judge Aaron Satie as wisdom and warning. The first time any man’s freedom is trodden on, we’re all damaged.”

Or what about this interaction between Worf and Picard?

Picard: We think we’ve come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, is all ancient history. Then, before you can blink an eye, suddenly, it threatens to start all over again.

Worf: I believed her. I… helped her. I did not see her for what she was.

Picard: Mr. Worf, villains who twirl their moustache are easy to spot. Those who clothe themselves in good deeds are well-camouflaged.

Worf: I think… after yesterday people will not be so ready to trust her.

Picard: Maybe. But she, or someone like her, will always be with us. Waiting for the right climate in which to flourish, spreading fear in the name of righteousness. […] Vigilance, Mr. Worf. That is the price we must continually pay.

Now lemme top all this ramble off with one final slightly edited quote to cement my point.

The first duty of every Star Trek fan is to the truth, whether it’s scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth! It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based! If you can’t find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened, you don’t deserve to wear that cosplay.

Well given they’re explicitly talking about the time BEFORE 9/11 then yeah. I’d hope he isn’t talking about '02-'07
