Yeah, that would be great. It would also improve activity and engagement level in this community.

limerod ,

Yeah, the tinted icons are very refined as can be seen in this post: androiddev.social/…/112594519877882594

limerod ,

You need more ram(8gb or higher) to run Local LLMs without impacting UX. Apple is way to greedy to give all the improvements in one go. It would probably be after IPhone 16 that the whole lineup may get the full suite of AI features.

limerod ,

What he said has merit and it also depends on the region. I had a person insist iPhones used type C charging in 2022. I did not want to argue with stupid.

limerod ,

Was AI the best way to do it? No idea.

AI is a buzzword at this point. I wouldn’t read too much into it. Everything that’s been called AI has been in existence way before the general people even new the A in AI.

limerod OP ,

GPU drivers especially those on mediatek are a mess. My dimensity 7050 smartphone is running on Rp32 GPU driver version. Which makes it not vulnerable because it runs on an older driver version! The affected driver versions are Bifrost and Valhall drivers from r34p0 through r40p0 for Bifrost and Valhall gpus

Why is End of Life of an OS bad for an average user?

I get that there won’t be any security updates. So any problem found can be exploited. But how high is the chance for problems for an average user if you say, only browse some safe websites? If you have a pc you don’t really care much about, without any personal information? It feels like the danger is more theoretical than...

limerod ,

Can you elaborate more about this “harmless history stealing” bit and how did you find it? Also, was the OS outdated in your case?

Like a sane person I use a system wide adblocker (Adguard) and unlock-origin in firefox. I also disable 3rd party iframes by default to reduce the crap being loaded by default on all my devices.

limerod ,

Hmm, I thought modern day browsers had protection against redirect and history poisoning attacks. Guess not in all.

limerod OP ,

Pros

  • Standout design.
  • Excellent screen.
  • Long battery life, super-fast charging.
  • Superb speakers.
  • Great photo quality.
  • Great performance.
  • Vanilla Android OS with a competitive set of extra features.

Cons

  • Throttles and heats up considerably under prolonged loads.
  • Video recording quality is mediocre.
limerod OP ,

The newer ones promise 4+5 years of quarterly updates. So, you will get updates just with long wait times.

limerod OP ,

No, it’s still there. Just more customisable. You can also change the Control centre so its similar to stock android instead of IOS/colorOS/HyperOS.

Unfortunately, updates take a long time to arrive. The reviewer has yet to receive an official software update. He has also been dealing with an annoying call bug. Nothing phone 2a in comparison has received multiple updates to fix issues. Get a nothing or pixel if you want Stock android look and feel while getting some semblance of software support.

limerod OP ,

Bloatware-free as in 3rd party apps like Instagram, Facebook, etc. Now, 1st party apps having ads are a different thing all together.

HTC U24 series with Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 coming on June 12 (www.fonearena.com)

The HTC phone model number 2QDA100 recently surfaced in Geekbench listing, revealing Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC, 12GB of RAM and Android 14. It also showed up in the Google Play Console database that revealed FHD+ (1080 × 2436 pixels) along with other details that were already revealed in the benchmark listing.

limerod ,

Google: You owe your phone so long as you don’t replace parts not from us and bring it for service. If you do it’s ours, forever! Even though, we take your money in the 1st place!

limerod ,

It should also be doable on Motorola. They also have similar Ready for desktop mode.

limerod ,

Google now on tap was the GOAT. The amount of stuff you could do back than was so cool. Now, we have this clunky mess of assistant and Gemini AI which doesn’t work half the time.

limerod OP ,

The previous ones were so much better.

limerod OP ,

Performance matters. The tensor chipsets throttle heavily because they have bad thermals and they cannot sustain their performance after just 3 minutes of mild to heavy use. After 10 minutes they perform worse than midrange snapdragon processors. It would be different if pixels were cheap. But, unfortunately they are not. Making this alongside connectivity issues a sore point for pixels.

limerod OP ,

It’s a minor improvement at best. The thermal performance should be similar if not the same.

limerod OP ,

When I was talking about thermals I was primarily speaking about the tensor G3. The previous generations are way worse.

As for A series being priced midrange. In my country it costs Rs52999($635) for the base 8/128gb model. I can get the top 16/256gb variant of the oneplus 12R with the much superior Snapdragon 8 gen 2 for Rs45999($551). There are also other options like the Poco X6 pro, motorola edge 50 pro, and the Realme GT 6T which cost significantly less.

Unless, pixels start approaching the price point of other smartphones. Its a no go to pay the google price just for software and camera alone.

limerod OP ,

Samsung s24 series promise 7 years of OS and security updates just the same as pixel 8 smartphones. Fairphone also promises up to 8 years of security updates and at least 5 os updates until 2031.

Samsung uses a mix of snapdragon and exynos. Fairphone uses an usual but enterprise grade midrange snapdragon processor. So, 7 years of updates do happen with snapdragon. Just depends on the manufacturer and the contract they have with Qualcomm.

limerod ,

A few hours give or take. Usually I read some threads or browse technology news in !technology Sometimes, also share some news related to the android world in a Lemmy community like !android

limerod ,

Stupidity at its finest. The whole point of cheap 3rd party apple accessories is to use workarounds to get past apple DRMs and use them without paying the apple tax.

Blame apple foremost for creating such a market in the 1st place. You don’t need such workarounds in other phones because they just work.

Is there a launcher for me?

I’ve tried a lot of the launchers I see talked about frequently- Nova, Niagra, Smart Launcher, Action Launcher, etc. but they all seem to not be worth the hassle of switching away from pixel launcher. Also none of them have the Google News feed that the pixel launcher has. I feel like I’m losing features when I switch....

limerod ,

Smart launcher has the option for google feed. Check here: www.smartlauncher.net/bridge

Has anyone ever heard of or used this webapp converter before? (play.google.com)

It looks like a very well built app to convert web pages to lite apps. It also seems to be based on Firefox and seems to include something similar to that of Firefox Multiaccount Containers for every webapp, on top of an adblocker. Seems very neat. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about whether or not it is open source...

limerod ,

I only know of hermit and native alpha. 1st time hearing about this. Compared to hermit appears to be only 2 years old vs 10 years for hermit.

There are lots of mention of Native Alpha and hermit in the description. Very strange I never found this option in the 2 years it existed on the play store. Being based on firefox sounds neat. Good for everyone who wants their user agent to be firefox everyone even in lite apps.

Would give it a shot and see what it holds. But, I don’t see myself switching from hermit.

limerod ,

The paid app is the unlocker. It does not do anything by itself. You can check the features on the website or see the play store description.

limerod ,

Fuck this copilot/gemini shit. At this rate I will need a filter in my social media and news sources to remove everything related related to them.

limerod OP ,

Doesn’t Sony still make compact smartphones?

limerod OP ,

3.5mm jack would be nice. But, its not a deal breaker for me. But, sdcard is a different beast. Having an external card means you can easily transfer some data without being reliant on expensive cloud storage or finicky android data transfer.

Plus, when you factory reset your phone. You can selectivity backup some data and simply pop the card back in without losing all your stuff.

limerod OP ,

I’m a paying YouTube premium subscriber and use adguard. But, I have been experiencing the YouTube app being slow in loading comments for some reason.

limerod OP ,

The last two times there were also errors like not being able to upvote anything. Later, I found it was a global youtube issue. YouTube needs to improve to be able to serve people at its scale.

limerod OP ,

YTmusic is the main reason I bothered to pay for premium. I was using Spotify and had a trial of 3months. The quality of recommendations was decent so chose to stick around. Adfree YouTube was another bonus.
