I kinda just hold it all in my head and fix stuff when I notice it’s broken.

Amazon Mulls $5 to $10 monthly price tag for unprofitable Alexa service, AI revamp (www.reuters.com)

Amazon (AMZN.O) is planning a major revamp of its decade-old money-losing Alexa service to include a conversational generative AI with two tiers of service and has considered a monthly fee of around $5 to access the superior version, according to people with direct knowledge of the company’s plans.

One of the reasons I use pixel phones, Google already knows everything, no point in Samsung knowing it too

Anything decent that doesn’t require a couple of 3090s?

BeardedGingerWonder ,

Thanks I’ll have to check them out - are these going to be gateway AIs that will end up with me talking myself into buying 2x3090s? I’m just asking now to know how much I’m going to test the bounds of WAF in the near future.

A supermarket trip may soon look different, thanks to electronic shelf labels (www.npr.org)

Grocery store prices are changing faster than ever before — literally. This month, Walmart became the latest retailer to announce it’s replacing the price stickers in its aisles with electronic shelf labels. The new labels allow employees to change prices as often as every ten seconds....

Curious how they define professional use, like my work desktop is windows, but all the servers are rhel

BeardedGingerWonder ,

Ha, I recently upgraded to an nvme drive from SATA, cloned the drive and then realised I need to move the windows partition all the way to the end to let me expand the Linux partition. Which broke windows. After about 2-3 hours of troubleshooting it was working again. It was around then I realised I hadn’t booted into windows in 2 years!

BeardedGingerWonder ,

My goddaned xterm is lagging, like wtf. Literally logged into a virtual machine for work several hundred miles away running commands through some weird-ass windows SSH terminal software on a server several thousand miles away from the virtual machine and it lags less than the term on my local machine. I’ve moved from vim to vscode it’s so painful.

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

BeardedGingerWonder ,

This would be a decent policy, probably+10% max expected capacity or something and contribute back to the grid.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

That I did not know!

BeardedGingerWonder ,

I remember when RPS started, Kieron Gillen and the the PC Gamer gang. Fucking shite now.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

Just to add to this, there’s zero chance you’re getting a 13x mortgage. For a 375k house on a 25k salary you’re going to need something more like 250k to start.

Fry off some bacon lardons in the pan first, leave the bacon fat in the pan.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

What a bloody stupid take. No one cares about saving humanity unless that’s their only pursuit in life?

BeardedGingerWonder ,

To add to this, free/super cheap hardware is definitely available, to me personally it’s way more impressive that a candidate cobbled together a JBOD NAS from a stripping some old hardware from a school and is the remaining hardware to run some kind of Beowulf cluster on usb drives.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

It is, you just have an idea, do some art and then glue it together with code.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

Whoa learned that one at the weekend. Added a new nvme drive, cloned the old drive. I wanted to expand my linux partition, but it was at the start of the drive. So shifted all the windows stuff to the end and grew the Linux partition.

Thought I’d boot into windows to make sure it was okay, just in case (even though I’ve apparently not booted it in 3 years). BSOD. 2-3hrs later it was working again, I’m still not sure what fixed it of I’m honest, I seemed to just rerun the same bootrec commands and repair startup multiple times, but it works now, so yay!

BeardedGingerWonder ,

Jeez, I’ve just looked at the list of utilities, I’m not surprised, it’s got FireWire drivers for dos included. You’ve got to be pretty deep into the weeds at the point you need FireWire support in DOS from a recovery disk!

It’s great for coeliacs, I’m not a huge fan of a lot of gluten free stuff (I’m not a coeliac but I have a parent and child who are and consequently eat a fair bit of gluten free food). Mostly it’s shit cause it’s low effort. With the right flours a ton of stuff is actually good, but mostly homemade. Some of the store bought breads are passable now (though pricey and I doubt anyone buys it out of preference if not a coeliac). What’s annoying as fuck is having to tell your 5 year old they can’t have something because something that in no way needs gluten in it contains gluten.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

Ultimately it’s your instance but personally I don’t feel it’s in keeping with the spirit of the original sub.

That’s New Zealand you’re thinking of, it’s only there some of the time.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

The poster is either a troll or a fucking moron, best not to feed it either way.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

First off, I couldn’t care less about ad blocking and I’m not here to moralise what anyone else does.

I do however think your point is somewhat undermined by the fact YouTube have an ad free option. You can legitimately make the ads disappear and YouTube have no issue with it.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

Or until they’ll have an update on what happened/happens.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

Haven’t bought a TV in 12 years, out of curiosity - if you’re not using the smart features of the TV would not connecting it to the network not be the best solution?

BeardedGingerWonder ,

Naw, it’s closer to 0.5% but they talk about 8 times as much as everyone else.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

Best I’ve seen is a process scheduled on UK local time (including hour changes) running on a server that maintains Eastern local (including hour changes) but the process logs in EST ( and does not move with the hour)

BeardedGingerWonder ,

I disagree about the table - if you’re interacting regularly across timezones you tend to convert everything to your local time anyway - India’s on lunch at 9am, US is starting at 14:00, because that’s how it fits into your day.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

And you’ll not get 100k in bumfuck Iowa for the same role
