Vapes are as tightly controlled as cigarettes (at least here in Canada).

The issue is that cigarettes aren’t as tightly regulated as you’d think. Pretty much every town has that one spot where local teens know they won’t get carded for nicotine products.

Another issue is how much easier it is to up your nicotine content. When my little brother started vaping, he went up to the equivalent of a pack of smoke’s worth of nicotine per day within a couple of months.

Whereas I, who got addicted to nicotine the old fashioned way, took a couple years before I was smoking a pack a day, because otherwise I would have been coughing my lungs out.

Once, I was in a sandwich shop in the Netherlands, ordering in English (as I don’t speak Dutch). The fellow behind the counter had excellent English. When he heard my friend and I speak to each other in French, he switched to French, and it was nearly as good as his English.

That’s a guy working in a sandwich shop, speaking at least three languages rather fluently. Heck, he probably speaks a bit of German too, seeing as we were close to the border with Germany. It blew my mind as a Canadian who’s used to people being stubbornly unilingual.

Speaking more than one language is so cool. It’s good for your brain, it helps one understand the structure of language better, it opens up doors to new cultures and ideas. I truly don’t understand why so many anglophones (and, if I’m being honest, a good number of francophones in Québec) are so opposed to the idea of bilingualism.

C’est un gars qui fait des sandwich, qui parle couramment un minimum de trois langues. Crisse, il parle probablement aussi un peu l’allemand vu qu’on était proche de la frontière avec l’Allemagne. Ça m’a ébloui en tant que canadien•ne habitué•e aux gens qui s’entêtent à ne parler qu’une langue.

Parler plus qu’une langue, c’est tellement cool. C’est bon pour le cerveau, ça t’aide à mieux comprendre les structures de la langue, ça ouvre des portes à de nouvelles idées et cultures. Je ne comprend réellement pas pourquoi tant d’anglophones (et, pour être honnête, un bon nombre de francophones du Québec) sont si opposé•es à l’idée du bilinguisme.

There’s just under 3 million francophones in Canada outside Québec, and only around 47% of people in Québec are French-English bilingual (which is still the highest rate of any province, to be fair).

There are francophone communities all across the country, from BC to PEI, from Yukon to southern Ontario. There’s also a substantial percentage of people in Québec who are unilingual francophones.

I’ve known from a pretty early age that I never want kids. Don’t get me wrong, I actually love kids. At social events I’ll often be the one entertaining them, and I can’t wait for my friends to start having kids so I can be the cool & fun babysitter.

However, kids are dreadful roommates, I’d be a horrible parent, I don’t want to bring a living being into this cruel world (especially with climate change), I’m too poor for children, and, being non-binary, parenthood just seems so tied down to gender norms I don’t adhere to.

It’s cheaper for you because suburbia effectively gets subsidized, and because housing in cities gets artificially limited through ridiculous zoning rules. Ideally, suburbs should have to actually bear the costs of the infrastructure necessary to their existence, and we should do away with things like detached single family housing and absurd parking minimums in urban areas.

To answer your question, it’s nice being in a loving relationship, in no small part because it necessitates loving yourself and accepting you are worthy of love. A healthy relationship cannot exist without self-love.

If by “work” you mean meaningfully contribute to my community and society as a whole, yes I’d still want to work. Not every day, but I was on unemployment benefits for almost a year, and it gets boring after a while not feeling like a useful member of your community.

I’m probably on the younger side of Lemmy, my first OS was Windows 98, but the first one I truly remember using is XP.

When I really started getting into computers, our family PC was running Vista, and the first nerdy thing I remember doing was trying to “downgrade” that computer to XP. My parents were none too pleased when they saw that the PC wouldn’t boot, thinking I had bricked it. It took me about a week to getting XP running properly, and that feeling of satisfaction is what started my love for tinkering with computers (I’m definitely a noob compared to the average Lemmy user, though).

Afterwards, I fell into the Apple fanboy pipeline and begged my parents for a MacBook. I was a huge Mac nerd, even saving up money as a teen for an iMac, until I started wanting to game more on PC, especially with friends on Steam. I then started dual-booting, initially XP but then Windows 7, and eventually I realized I was never booting into my Mac partition. I played around very occasionally with dual-booting Linux as well, Ubuntu and then Linux Mint, but this was more for computer nerd clout than a genuine need or interest for libre software, also the command line scared me and I still played too many games to main a Linux distro.

I then built a PC for gaming, and ran Windows 7 on it until around 2 years ago when I got really into FOSS and switched to EndeavourOS which is what I’ve been happily using ever since. I’ve always enjoyed tinkering on computers, but with EndeavourOS I feel like I’m less battling with my OS and more with my lack of skill/knowledge, which is much more rewarding to surmount, and makes me feel like my system is truly mine.

If anyone reading this was also always on KSF servers back in the day, it was surf_hurrr, which was the surf map equivalent of a shitpost. So even in the niche realm of surfing in Source engine games, it wasn’t impressive, let alone for the general population.

There’s some confusion somewhere here, but I’m not entirely sure where. If you’re using a torrent client, you’re not using Real-Debrid. You can download torrents via Real-Debrid, but the torrent part is done on their servers. When you then download the files, you’re not torrenting, you’re downloading directly from Real-Debrid’s servers.

If do you want torrent client recommendations, qbittorrent on PC and LibreTorrent on Android. Just know that you wouldn’t be using Real-Debrid while using these.

The 87-year-old pontiff reportedly made the homophobic remark in a closed-door meeting last week as he told Italian bishops that gay men shouldn’t be allowed to train for the priesthood.

The newspaper articles, which were translated from Italian, claimed the Pope had said there is “frociaggine” – which translates in English to “faggotry” – in some of the seminaries.

Francis’ comments were made in the context of proposals from the Italian bishops to amend guidelines on candidates to seminaries.

“Faggotry in the Seminary” sounds like a Catholic-themed porno movie from the '80s.

If I were you, I’d check around your area for a bike co-op. They often have great deals on used bikes they tuned up, so you’d save money and end up with something as good (or even better!) than entry-level hybrid models. Plus co-ops tend to be staffed by the hugest bike nerds who are sincerely eager to help new cyclists.

If you’d rather buy new, I’d recommend an entry-level (starting at around 600$) hybrid from any of the big bike brands (this advice is a bit location-specific, I’m talking about North America here). I ride a Trek FX1, but all the big bike brands have similarly-featured models.

Whatever you do, please stay away from cheap, big box store bikes. These are usually assembled by people who are not trained bike mechanics and shoddily assembled bikes can easily be dangerous. They also often have non-standard parts, making repairs and maintenance frustrating.

They’re talking about Real Debrid, which is a subscription service allowing access to hosters and easy conversion of torrents to direct streams. It’s really cheap and absolutely worth the money IMO, but RD doesn’t seed torrents. Distributing content in that manner would get them in heaps of legal trouble.

I guess it does somewhat solve the problem of leeching, as if anyone has streamed a torrent via RD in the past 30 days you’ll just load their cached copy, but I was perhaps naïvely hoping for an actual addon (RD is not an addon but rather can be configured through Torrentio) that somehow seeded torrents I stream.

As someone whose credit card has been at the 5000$ limit for a couple of months, I’d say it’s capitalism that’s unsustainable.

Between groceries, rent, and the occasional treat to make life barely bearable, I don’t have anywhere to cut expenses. My vehicle is a bicycle. I live with three roommates in an old building in a neighbourhood that’s more down-and-leaving than up-and-coming. I only wear thrifted clothes. My diet consists largely of legumes and rice.

I don’t think you had any ill intent with your comment, I feel like you’re coming from a place of empathy, but it does rub me the wrong way and gives me the impression you might be unaware of the realities that many people are living through right now. I’m relatively lucky, I at least have a roof over my head and never go (too) hungry. A lot of people have it much worse.

If you have an actual tip to deal with my debts, I’d be all ears, but I highly doubt cutting the little luxuries I do afford myself (an occasional craft beer, 50$ of weed every two months or so, and a takeout meal or two per month) would suddenly make my situation financially sustainable. It’s the landlords and the grocery-monopolies that are unsustainable.

It’s not about the tuition (although most of our universities are effectively subsidized by foreign students paying higher tuition fees), it’s about having an easily exploitable labour force while they’re here studying. Less familiarity with labour laws and less protections than a citizen make for attractive wage slaves.

Of course, the solution isn’t tightening immigration, but the actual solutions might make the wealthy accumulate riches at a slightly slower pace, therefore it is unimaginable.

Kodi + add-ons is great if you like tinkering, otherwise I would recommend Stremio with the Torrentio add-on. Stremio + Torrentio + Real-Debrid is the easiest way to consume pirated media IMO.

There is also a Trakt add-on, like the other commenter said the integration isn’t as seamless as a well-maintained Kodi setup, but it’s definitely good enough that I’ve switched from Kodi to Stremio with Trakt being the way I organise my TV/movie watchlists.

That’s a fair criticism, but I wouldn’t recommend Windows as a daily driver to 95% of people either. If you like/care/know about computers, use Linux, otherwise I’d recommend MacOS over Windows (unless said person uses their computer for gaming, in which case Windows’ll give you the least hassle)

I would describe myself as firmly “in the middle”, and I honestly don’t disagree with your points overall. However, I think Windows isn’t really “easier to use” than most Linux distros, it’s just what most people are used to.

That doesn’t take away from your argument, as being familiar with an OS will make it easier to use and that’s completely valid, but someone who’s used Linux all their life would similarly face struggles using Windows. User inertia is a huge factor contributing to Windows’ marketshare.
