77% Of Employees Report AI Has Increased Workloads And Hampered Productivity, Study Finds (www.forbes.com)

The new global study, in partnership with The Upwork Research Institute, interviewed 2,500 global C-suite executives, full-time employees and freelancers. It is great for pattern recognition (we use it to recognize damages in pipes) and probably pattern reproduction (never used it for that). Haven’t really seen much other real life value.

Lol to the “back in the day porn was safer”. Back innthe day the worst stuff was openly distributed on normal porn sites. It was actually difficult not to stumble over illegal ot really disturbing stuff when browsing those sites. And don’t get me started on the stuff people send you on some irc servers unasked (that was more in the late 90s though).

Even non porn sites could be bad. Like one time I was browsing a non-porn anime site and suddenly landed on a porn site that had me scared the police might kick in my door, despite closing it immediately after it opened.

This, luckily, is a lot better regulated nowadays.

I give you accessibility though. Having a internet connected computer in you pocket 24/7 might make things much worse.

Many also have quite a lot of social areas, shopping places and good public transportation. If they are well maintained, they are far superior to the space wasting, infraatructure hungry, climate destroying sprawling suburbs of several western countries.

I am no expert. But afaik drivers normally are integrated into the kernel and intensively tested by several parties before getting onto your computer. Only for proprietary drivers this would be problematic under Linux.

Don’t know about youtube, but I have a similar experience at twitter. I believe they probably see blocking, muting or reporting as “interaction” and show more of the same as a result.

On youtube on the other hand, I never blocked a channel and almost never see militaristic or right wing stuff (despite following some gun nerds, because I think they are funny).

I mean, there have been more than a dozen confirmed assassination attempts on Hitler (even suicide bomber attempts among them) and a few more unconfirmed possible attempts. The future did try their best (or just some brave people from the time itself).

Add bonus features already installed on the shoe, but need an extra subscription. Maybe clips to connect them to your bike pedals, but it costs 4.99€/month to actually use that feature. Think about all the feature subscription you could sell for a good hiking shoe.

(I really hope they won’t do this, but I can see them trying it.)

Greensleeves is almost 500 years old. I'm sure there were other very popular songs when it came out, but Greensleeves had to staying power to still be here. What do you think is today's Greensleeves? (en.wikipedia.org)

Not just a song that can be found in the archives, but one that almost everyone can hum, even today....

menemen , (edited )
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

Imo Greensoeeves mostly endured because it can be perfectly whistled by everyone and still be played by professional musicians in a way that awes the audience.

This will probably not be th reason why current songs will stay arround. If society doesn’t break down, I assume that every popular melody, be it from the US, China or Lebanon, will stay around and get reused every ~30 years to grab some quick money.

why isn't anyone calling for Trump to drop out.

I get it, Biden is old and that’s a problem, but why doesn’t anyone seem to have a problem with the fact that Trump is almost the same age, has 34 felonies, raped at least 2 women, went to Epstein’s Island 11 times, sexualized his own daughter, stole classified documents, aligned himself with Xi and Putin, and can’t...

They don’t need to be exclusive. Power generation should be diverse. Otherwise prices will go through the roof on times without wind (happens in Germany). This can lead to higher energy prices in combination with high energy exports.

menemen , (edited )
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

True, it wouldn’t be enough, This is why Germany still has a lot of coal-fired power station and natural gas power stations, despite huge investments into renewables, and is also investing a lot into wood-fired power stations (imo a really terrible idea). The nuclear plants could still ease the situation by giving a stable basic load that has some planable variability (wind models are getting also better every year and aren’t that bad as it is). For now renewables cannot really provide a very stable basic load (at least not here, might be different for other areas).

There are great concepts to improve all of this with stuff like pumped-storage hydroelectricity, but those cannot be build everywhere and take up a lot of space. It is going forward and I think nuclear power will come to an end eventually. For now, I think they still have their place (and imo Germany acted irrationally by shutting them all down).

I mean, we’ve been lucky that France completly fucked their energy sector up (hints towards that nuclear plants probably also won’t be the ultimate solution), otherwise we’d have lost a loooot of money and would have had energy prices even worse.

Here an imo interesting read: …substack.com/…/capture-price-of-importsexports-i…

I also liked Paris and I’ve been there twice in summer. People weren’t actively going out of their way to be unfriendly to us, so this was great compared to the rest of france.

Everyone we asked for help did their best to help us, though we have 0 french knowledge. I had very different experiences elsewhere in France (we quickly learned to only speak to arab people outside Paris, if we needed help, worked fine).

We skipped most touristy places and just had a few relaxing days there both times. So that might also be, why we had a pleasant time in Paris.

I could imagine MIT might be interesting for Software released by public institutions, that are meant to be used by the industry in any way they want. Sometimes earning money with your product might even be impossible due to restrictions. So, not really Software released with the FOSS philosophy.

Otherwise I also never really understood why anyone would use the MIT license.

Then you are pretty much the archetype of what I thought about. :)

With the recent issues of transgender people in sports, why don’t we move some sports over to a weight-class system?

Obviously this won’t work for all sports, but things like football, track, soccer, it would allow for de-gendered team, even allowing athletes with the skills but not the genetically-endowed physical attributes to have a place to play....

You sure? I cannot find records adjusted to weight, but the male record is ~2:01h and the female 2:17h

No. There are still a lot of serious journalists on it. It is still a very important media for journalists to quickly share information.

But the porn&hate bots and the uncontrolled trolls make it unbearable. It has always been rough on twitter, but it has become an utter shitshow.

Linux on old School Machines?

Hi all, the private school I work at has a tonne of old windows 7/8 era desktops in a student library. The place really needs upgrades but they never seem to prioritise replacing these machines. Ive installed Linux on some older laptops of mine and was wondering if you all think it would be worth throwing a light Linux distro on...

Some of them are really succesful. Many people care. Others don’t.

Here the current Steam charts. Many indie games, some few with really low specs. Banana only needs 30MB RAM. Seems to be a great game. Hostly now, why are 50k people playing that “game” currently?

But back on topic: Yes, AAA games are more succesfull and earn much more money, but claiming “no one cares about indie” is stupid, when so many people play games like Rust, Stardew Valley, Prison Architect, Terraria, RimWorld, Valheim, The Forest, …

There is tons of porn on twitter since a long time. They somehow managed to keep it away from “normal” twitter. That is why it worked. That has been eroding for a couple of month now with the “invasion of the porn-bots”. If they don’t manage to continue to separate the porn-twitter from the non-porn twitter I don’t think that will end well for them.
