    I get pizza every other week from my local pizza joint. Delivery driver is always the same and I know a shit app like Uber eats isn’t taking a cut for jack shit.

    The problem is we want more for less. People need to understand for the things they want they have to pay more and we aren’t there yet. People don’t give a shit. They want cheap and disposable.

    AProfessional ,

    God forbid you call a cab or the restaurant directly to order your food?

    Most restaurants do not deliver and I think its honestly ridiculous to call a cab to go to and back to a restaurant when delivery services exist. If you happen to live in one of the rare places that have good public transit that’s a great option though.

    When you have a gun, especially a “manly” gun like an AR-15, you some people start having intrusive thoughts and desire to use it.

    Same with police. If you dress up for war and talk up an us/them mentality eventually it boils over to what we have today. Many cops (not all) are just playing dress-up so they can play war.

    blazeknave ,

    Wow I didn’t consider this at all. When I consider my own gun ownership and acquiring a pistol or rifle, I’ve literally never thought, “but what if I start itching to use it.” I’m more concerned with “where the fuck would I keep this away from little hands, with ammo locked somewhere else, in a practical way to go grab it all and assemble between hearing an intruder and interfacing with them… okay, this is dumb. I’m not getting guns”

    Subverb ,

    This is why you wouldn’t do what this guy did.

    Kyle Rittenhouse is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. He took his AR-15 and drove half an hour to “protect businesses” that he had no stake in. He armed himself and then deliberately embroiled himself in a tense, riotous situation. While he might not have done anything technically illegal, he was clearly spoiling for an opportunity to brandish and use that weapon.

    “UAW president Shawn Fain on May Day calls on unions to prepare for strike in 2028”

    al.com/…/uaw-president-shawn-fain-on-may-day-call…

    “We are fully preparing to strike on May Day 2028,” Shawn Fain wrote in a proposal on May Day, or International Workers Day.

    Fain said it is the only way workers can “win universal healthcare and the right to retire with dignity.”

    [In an op-ed (inthesetimes.com/…/may-day-2028-general-strike-wo…) for progressive publication In These Times, Fain said the union’s recent auto contracts were all aligned to expire on April 30, 2028. He called on other unions to do the same as way to mass power to “reshape the economy into one that works for the benefit of everyone.”

    “They want us to believe that corporate bosses gave workers decent wages, benefits and safer working conditions out of the goodness of their hearts. That justice and equality for people of color, for immigrants, for women and for queer communities were gifts benevolently handed down from above,” Fain wrote.

    “But we know the truth. Every law passed, every union formed and contract won—every improvement made at the workplace—has been won through the tireless sacrifice of the working class.”

    Not to justify the actions of the shooter, but ringing the doorbell before breaking in is definitely a thing. It’s a means of checking if the house is occupied - if you’re just trying to steal things, an unoccupied house is ideal, and if someone answers when you ring, it’s easy enough to make up an excuse and walk away.

    Imo it boils down to a child needing to feel some semblance of control in their life, and because their brains haven’t developed enough to find more constructive ways to do that shit like this happens.

    You see this throughout humans all over the world, adults and children alike. Self-determination and the ability to make choices, however small, is important.

    Jimmyeatsausage ,

    And it literally can be as simple as you picking 2 outfits that are appropriate for the day and letting them pick which one to wear. That’s not to imply anything about the OP or the ER story…obvs every individual case is unique, and I’m not implying that picking your own underwear can cure psychopathy.

    But, things as simple as this can cure neurotypical cases of children acting out if that behavior is rooted in a need for self-determination or control.

    The stupidest idea for a city that I’ve ever heard has gotten marginally less stupid.

    Not that they’ll even build these 2.4 km.

    aniki ,

    Ask anyone who’s ever built a house and they can tell you what a stupid fucking idea it would be to have a foundation that large.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    Even if they somehow had some magical way to solve the foundation issue, with the original plan… could you imagine having to go from one part of the city to another for pretty much any reason? In a linear city? You better hope that other part is really close. Especially if it’s a personal medical issue or a dying loved one.

    themoonisacheese ,
    @themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Also: this city has only one road. How is traffic going to be? Better hope you somehow get a flat near your work, and that everyone else does too, and that nobody ever moves or cha’mnges job for any reason. HappycamperNZ ,

    I mean, how is it any different to any other multi km wide city?

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    For one thing, you can avoid congestion.

    HappycamperNZ ,

    Sorry, I mean those saying I hope you don’t need to get to the other side, or what if you move.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    Like I said- if you need to get to the other side of a normal city, you can avoid congestion by taking a different route.

    In a linear city, there is only one route. If there is a traffic jam or a train derailment in a linear city, there are no alternative routes. Not even for an ambulance.

    HappycamperNZ ,

    I would assume you have two routes, one either side, both directions for this exact reason.

    If anything it will be more reliable and cost effective as every mass transit can be used by anyone.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    It’s very easy for one truck crash to block off both directions of a road. Even a very wide road. I know because I’ve experienced it.

    I’m really not sure why you don’t understand why having multiple alternate routes from A to B would be a big advantage.

    HappycamperNZ ,

    Im saying two separate highways, one on either side rather than two directions next to each other.

    I live in a city full of peninsulas and harbours - well aware how much it sucks having one way in and out of places. The difference is that they were never planned and designed for current volumes, vehicles and logistics - this can be.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    So two truck accidents could clog up the entire city. Again, seems like having alternate routes would be an advantage.

    HappycamperNZ ,

    And three separate incidents that also breach both lanes, cant be cleared quickly and happen at the same time can block three.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    Can they be cleared quickly? Because I’ve sure been in traffic due to wrecks that block off both sides of a divided highway for hours. Except they could divert traffic to the nearest exit.

    Confused_Emus ,

    Well yeah, he wasn’t white.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    Honestly, that is not a big Terre Haute problem today compared to a lot of Indiana. While it is still by far majority white, there is a sizable black population compared to a lot of other Indiana towns this size and there’s no “black part of town,” it’s thoroughly integrated. As far as Kashoggi is concerned, there also is a large enough local Muslim population to support a mosque. ISU is also a progressive school despite being in Indiana they are very big on multiculturalism. I don’t know what the Muslim population of the school is, but enough that you would notice and the school does have public celebrations of holidays like Eid, so it was actually surprising.

    Now, I admit that was not always the case. In fact, a little over a century ago, Terre Haute was the site of an absolutely horrific lynching of a black man. And, of course, since this is Indiana, there is not a total lack of racism. But compared to other parts of the state I’ve been to, it’s doing relatively well on that front.

    Confused_Emus ,

    snooggums , (edited )
    @snooggums@midwest.social avatar

    They are letting him off the hook by not making him bond the whole amount.

    The amount was high because his fraud was high. Why does committing bigger crimes mean less proportionate punishment?

    KevonLooney ,

    You have the right idea. Obviously they should have made him pay the full amount. I think they know he literally doesn’t have it.

    Remember, the state has a retired judge watching his bank accounts for a while now. They know what he can pay. $175 million in cash is better than them seizing his property quickly because that process is actually very slow.

    For everyone who thinks the state should just “take Trump Tower”, do you understand that’s not something they’re good at? They would need to find a buyer. You can’t just get a buyer for such a large building in a few days. They really would prefer cash for at least part of the fine.

    The building isn’t going anywhere and this doesn’t affect the judgement.

    whostosay ,

    Then just take all his shit or admit the system can’t adequately punish the wealthy out loud instead of pretending that this is somehow a reasonable response to someone saying they can’t pay. They can seize regular people’s property after all.

    bostonbananarama ,

    Assume for a moment that the appeal comes back and overturns the judgment. Let’s even assume that it is a completely legitimate reason for it being overturned.

    How do you unwind taking that property and selling it? My understanding is that NY doesn’t have a redemption law for property that is levied and sold.

    The appeals court has to at least consider the possibility of legitimately overturning the case.

    snooggums ,
    @snooggums@midwest.social avatar

    Who fucking cares? He is a rich asshole who committed blatant fraud and tried to overthrow the government and worst case is is slightly less wealthy than he was before court while the average person is flat broke from lawyer fees and their lives ruined from the same situation.

    Shilling for Trump should make you embarrassed.

    bostonbananarama ,

    Who fucking cares?

    About the rule of law? Obviously not you.

    You want a specific action taken because you don’t like the person involved. Congratulations, you can replace Alito and Thomas when they get off the court. You are fine with changing the law to hurt the people you don’t like.

    I on the other hand would prefer to preserve the rule of law. There are absolutely no downsides for the action taken by the appeals court, Trump posted $175 million Bond and the properties that they would have seized are still there to be seized in the future if necessary.

    If the state levy and sells those properties, it is going to be a nightmare to try and unwind if the appeal were successful. In the meantime, if Trump did somehow sell those properties it would be a fraudulent conveyance, and those sales would be overturned. Other than hating Donald Trump (and I’m with you), there is no downside to this, but I’m not willing to destroy our legal system for him.

    snooggums ,
    @snooggums@midwest.social avatar

    The specific action is the standard action in fraud cases. That is caring about the rule of law. You excuse going soft on somebody who committed record breaking levels of fraud because treating him the same as the standard is hard.

    If the properties can’t get the amount they are claimed to be worth, then they are not worth that much. That is why Trump is having problems getting the bond, because he lied about the value of his properties.

    Ther is a massive downside, which is rewarding fraud, both by only having a punishment equal to the fraud and also going easy the bigger the fraud is. That just incentivises more fraud, just like giving rideshares a free pass for bypassing laws that apply to cabs and short term rentals for avoiding lawd that apply to hotels encourages those industries.

    bostonbananarama ,

    I’m not trying to be rude, but it really sounds like you don’t know what you’re talking about.

    If the properties can’t get the amount they are claimed to be worth, then they are not worth that much.

    Have you ever been involved in levying and selling real property? Do you think that process ever nets fair market value? Most times you don’t get 50 cents on the dollar.

    Ther is a massive downside, which is rewarding fraud, both by only having a punishment equal to the fraud and also going easy the bigger the fraud is.

    Again, this has no bearing on the current case. No one is rewarding fraud and no one is going easy. The court didn’t reduce the judgment, the court didn’t reduce the interest, all the court did was reduce the amount of bond that had to be posted. If you had some way in which the state of New York was materially disadvantaged by this action, you would have brought it up by now. You don’t.

    In fact, this might actually work out better for them, because at least now they have $175 million in cash to satisfy a portion of the judgment. As difficult as it can be to litigate a civil action, I think every attorney will tell you that it’s often much more difficult to find, levy, and sell assets to satisfy the judgment. If the assets are in another jurisdiction then you have to domesticate your judgment, some states make that simple, some states make that fairly difficult.

    You also indicated that this is “record breaking levels of fraud”, whatever that means, but advocate for the “standard action and fraud cases”. Perhaps such a record-breaking event should warrant actions other than the standard. But that concept would require thought, so don’t worry about it.

    snooggums ,
    @snooggums@midwest.social avatar

    Do you think that process ever nets fair market value? Most times you don’t get 50 cents on the dollar.

    If you think property worth is more than what people will pay for them, then you are doing what Trump was found guilty of doing.

    bostonbananarama ,

    At some point you’re going to stop proving how ignorant you are, right?

    Listing a property with a broker on the open market is going to get you fair market value. Levying and selling that same property is an entirely different process and is going to net you far less money, usually closer to fifty cents on the dollar. No fraud involved.

    IamtheMorgz ,

    Idk why you’re being down voted. I just watched a Legal Eagle video that pretty much described the change as being exactly related to this. If the appeal fails, he still owes the original judgement amount and if he doesn’t come up with the money they will seize some property. If the appeal works out for the orange man then they don’t have to try to undo a sale.

    Appeals courts are good things. And everyone, including that a-hole, is entitled to appeal.

    Now, it’s super annoying he can brag about having the money in public but argue in court he doesn’t, but hey, that’s our former president. Talks only out of his ass and never suffers any consequences from it.

    With any luck the appeal will fail miserably and he’ll still be on the hook for the full amount.

    supamanc ,

    I think you don’t understand how asset forfeiture works. Trump tower is worth (reportedly) some $800m. The state seizes and sell it for the $500m he owes. They would find a buyer pretty quickly at that price. Any extra on top of the judgment amount is returned with compliments to Trump.

    baru ,

    I think you don’t understand how asset forfeiture works.

    I don’t understand. Still, from what I’ve read most of the buildings are anything but fully owned by Trump. And apparently that makes things difficult.

    supamanc ,

    Ah, well that’s an aspect I hadn’t considered!

    baru ,

    I’m curious as to how a $175M bond is supposed to guarantee a $454M judgment.

    The appeals court lowered it to this amount. This could be a hint that the judge didn’t calculate the original amount correctly. Meidas Touch on YouTube did a video about it. I haven’t seen any good articles which repeat the same idea.

    Dkarma ,

    No they didn’t they lowered the amount he has to put up for an appeal

    The only way to make that film not terrible would be to not make it at all.

    Or, I suppose, blow up every copy before it was distributed. The Army could definitely have helped with that.

    Generation Kill also didn’t have support from the US Army. All the US military gear show was either Jordanian or CGI.

    Thanks for the reminder to watch that series. I liked The Wire and We Own This City by David Simon so I’m assuming it is a more thoughtful show than the title and imagery suggests.

    I actually just finished it, wish there were more episodes. There was a lot more humor than I was expecting which really helped to offset the depressing aspects. Yeah, I really can’t imagine the government supporting the show aside from it portraying the US as an absolutely dominating force.

    From a casting angle I think it’s kinda funny Jarhead had a Sarsgaard and Generation Kill had a Skarsgård. I also kept thinking the Rolling Stone writer (Lee Tergesen) looked like a relative of John Michael Higgins.

    False. Theres nothing cool about army recruitment.

    dumpsterlid , (edited )

    It makes me want to become an army recruiter for video game armies, instead of trying to sleazily recruit high school kids to go get murdered or maimed across the planet I use all the same rhetoric army recruiters use to make the the military seem cool but I recruit kids to play video games while dressed up in camo instead.

    My pamphlets are of video games where you can do cool military stuff without actually killing anybody or getting hurt. Hey check out Arma 3, you can use all those cool looking jets and tanks to nerd out and blow stuff up and THEN when you are done you can just turn it off and go do something else because it’s a fantasy.

    Framed on my table is a picture of Iraq after 20 years of brutal occupation and war with stats on the amount of civilians dead, infrastructure destroyed and American servicemen killed. Next to it is a framed picture of Blood Gulch after 20 years of brutal multiplayer matches with a bunch of zeros next to all the same stats.

    I also have a “But I Want To Serve My Country” pamphlet which suggests types of jobs and careers that actually serve the country and local community like teacher, nurse, tradesman, social worker etc…

    The poster behind my recruiting table says “Just Go Play A Video Game, Joining The Military Is Lame”.

    This would be hilarious to do in character as a recruiter from Helldivers 2.

    There’s no way you can make fighting for the interests of American oligarchs “safe”, though. Even as advanced as our military is; it still ultimately comes down to putting boots on the ground.
