Just artifacting I think. There’s a slight yellow color in the middle of the bottom serifs of the h that is similar to other h’s and which isn’t present in the b’s

Carnac

I never watched Carson but then I found out about art fern a couple years ago. Looks like I’ve got another set of sketches to look up now

The fire truck’s not a kei-- keis have yellow plates

Al should run again.

He’s got a pretty good podcast btw. Always jokes that each guest that comes on makes that particular show “a good one, for a change.”

Now if they could just stop their shady lumber sourcing practices, that’d be great

I know someone who saw Neil Armstrong once, which pretty much makes me the moon.

Feels like even in theaters half the time the dialog is too quiet, and the explosions are definitely too loud

Even without all the invasion of privacy implications, I’m skeptical it would even work. Source: 20 years of “Windows is checking for a solution to the problem” that has never worked even once.

I guess for the basic stuff I do when I’ve had programs crash I’ve never seen it do anything, but nice to know it’s not completely useless

Japanese home baths are almost always right next to a shower, and you take a shower before getting in the bathtub to soak. Because you’re clean before using the tub, a family will leave it full until everyone has had a bath. They still empty the tub after everyone has used it though-- it’s not like they keep the same water for days on end.

It’s a similar concept at bathhouses, where everyone gets in the same baths after showering.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy’s massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It’s been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let’s say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they’re what’s colloquially referred to...

tigeruppercut ,

Let’s play identify the ml propaganda! Is it CCP or from the Kremlin?

I used to use a website where you could send a postcard to a randomly assigned address of another site member on there, and in return you’d get a postcard back from a different random member. One time I wrote the address too close to the stamp area so I could only fit one stamp up there, and had to put the remaining stamp postage at the bottom, and then I dropped it in a mailbox in town somewhere.

Japan Post missed the extra stamps at the bottom and so returned it to my house, despite it being a postcard with no return address to a random country I had no connection to. I lived in the boonies so there weren’t a lot of foreigners in town, but there were definitely at least a few others.

tigeruppercut ,

The onion is coming from inside the house!

Yeah, NASA paid to fund research to communicate with dolphins, and it led to jerking off one of the adolescents so he’d be able to concentrate on the lessons better. Also there was LSD in there for a bit. When the project lost funding the dolphin was moved to an inadequate facility so he got depressed and offed himself.

The 60s was a hell of a time for sciencing stuff.

Well, it’d be more like “the 2nd was a proxy conflict over a figurehead after news networks were coopted by conservative billionaires and used for 30+ years to sow seeds of stochastic terrorism after laws regarding lying on TV were eliminated.”

tigeruppercut ,

Gotta love a 3.5+ hr podcast. Sounds like the time the Some More News folks did a “brief” look at Jordan Peterson for 3 hours. Good thing I commute 2 hrs a day and listen at 2.5 speed.

I don’t really understand how channels like these crank out so much content. I wrote a lot of essays in college but I think producing 20000 words every week would just about kill me.

Men with 'toxic masculinity' are more likely to make sexual advances without consent, study finds (phys.org)

A team of researchers, including Binghamton psychology professor Richard Mattson and graduate student Michael Shaw asked men between the ages of 18–25 to respond to hypothetical sexual hookup situations in which a woman responds passively to a sexual advance, meaning the woman does not express any overt verbal or behavioral...

Yet when it comes to making up two-word catchphrases like [HORRIBLE] [DEMOGRAPHIC], it never even occurs to them that people might associate [demographic] with [horribleness] when they hear it.

I don’t think anyone actually believes that-- it seems like you see it from bad faith actors online/in the manosphere. No one thinks someone who hates “big trucks” hates all trucks, or “crowded places” hates everywhere, or more to the point, that someone who wants to cut “toxic people” out of their life is going to never see another human. Yet somehow applying an adjective to “masculinity” makes it really easy to be misunderstood?

If the argument is that they should’ve come up with a phrase that’s less vulnerable to corruption by bad faith actors I might buy it, but I’m willing to bet that even something as specific as “overly performative aspects of how men express their masculinity because they squash their feelings and thus become dangerous to people around them, especially women” would still magically be “misunderstood” on the internet and reduced to “feminists say all men bad”.

tigeruppercut ,

Could you imagine trying to make any of these phrases academic terms?

That’s a good point, but (most) of your chosen identity aspects aren’t widely known for being accountable for negative things like violence. How about something like “dangerous republicanism” or “genocidal zionism”? Maybe if exaggerated (or even say, toxic) masculinity wasn’t being weaponized so much these days to lead young men toward alt right fascism it wouldn’t come up in academic settings.

tigeruppercut ,

But the truth is really that it doesn’t matter how correct you are. You can argue until you’re blue in the face about how defensible “Toxic Masculinity” as a term really is, and you’d be right too, but that doesn’t really change the fact that you are arguing about it.

Arguing online hardly ever changes minds, but I like to make sure that at least some voice is given to the opposition when things like this come up, just so bystanders are aware that there are opposing voices. I’ve already seen lemmy threads where women say there are many of the same problems here as were on reddit despite the smaller communities, so I’d hate to stand by while discussion like this goes unchallenged.

There’s always just too much work to do, it seems.

I remember reading a quote from someone that said something along the lines of “No one on their deathbed ever says ‘I wish I’d spent more time at the office’”.

I’m sure some conservative brainworm judge will block this somehow just like when the Biden admin tried to cap credit card late fees. This country won’t be fixed until the only way judges can receive RVs as bribes is if they end up under the tires.

Jokes aside, a lot of devs love watching stuff like speedrunning. It means someone loved their creation enough to minutely analyze it and spend countless hours with it.

eg check out the devs watching a guy beat Psychonauts youtu.be/lsDc1YVxHA0?t=517

(I’m pretty sure there was similar version of this where they guy wasn’t in the room and they were just watching the earlier recording of the speedrun but I can’t find it now)

Most visitors do not spend the night in Fujikawaguchiko, preferring to come in for a day trip but stay in busier Tokyo – just 62 miles (100 kilometers) away – at night.

This means that there’s no money coming in – from entry tickets, museum passes, or hotel fees – to balance out the damage caused by thousands of visitors or the erosion, trash and traffic issues they bring with them. As a result, the town of just 10,000 people has struggled to cope.

tigeruppercut ,

Fujikawaguchiko

The town is called (Mt) Fuji River Mouth Lake… feels like when they established the place they could’ve edited it down a bit to make it roll off the tongue better. It’d be like a town in the US called Shastaportsmouthpond

Does lemmy do different font sizes? It’d be nice if it could look like some fine print at the bottom.

Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads (www.techradar.com)

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

The one value streaming services provide is subtitles in languages other than English. Unfortunately there aren’t enough pirates in a lot of countries to make foreign media viable.

tigeruppercut ,

Is the release group the name of the people who usually upload subs? How would I find that?

For example, I’ve been trying to find Japanese subs for the show American Horror Story, but the only way I know to look is to search for the title plus subs. But the only result that even comes close is the opensubs site, which doesn’t have much Japanese content.

tigeruppercut ,

Oh yeah, good point. I didn’t think about translating the srt files myself-- I’ll see if I can make that work

tigeruppercut ,

How does it find subs if no one’s created the sub file? Does it auto translate them from the original language?

tigeruppercut ,

Oh, that looks promising, thanks. Free translators like google and such have a character limit so I couldn’t just copy paste the whole file.

tigeruppercut ,

I don’t think it’s hopeless-- her numbers are down overall since her first term:

Greene ran for re-election after winning a legal challenge to her eligibility based on her alleged involvement in organizing and promoting the 2021 United States Capitol attack, based on the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which bars people who have engaged in insurrection from serving in Congress. While Greene won by a comfortable margin, this was the worst showing ever by a Republican in the 14th district, and the best performance of a Democrat in this district, being the first time since the district was created that the Democrat received more than 28% of the vote.

So while a dem is never getting that seat, it could be an indication that she’s losing support overall from her base, who just might be tired of her shit and want a more competent republican to fuck them over instead. Most of the people she beat in the 2022 primaries sound at least a little more impressive than part time crossfit coach and conspiracy nutjob, so maybe someone else will have a chance in November.

GOP primary 2022:

Eric Cunningham, sales executive
James Haygood, farmer
Charles Lutin, physician and veteran
Jennifer Strahan, CEO of J. Osley & Co.
Seth Synstelien, educator
