Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are surging "faster than ever" to beyond anything humans ever experienced, officials say (www.cbsnews.com)

One of the major drivers of the exceptional heat building within Earth’s atmosphere has reached levels beyond anything humans have ever experienced, officials announced on Thursday. Carbon dioxide, the gas that accounts for the majority of global warming caused by human activities, is accumulating “faster than ever,”...

Ok so how does this play with the fact that if you die in Canada you die in real life?

Not only is this kind of attack notoriously unstable, finding out what images have been glazed is a fantastic indicator for finding high-quality art that is the stuff you want to train on.

I was considering voting for the pirate party, but they polled at less than 5% in France and it was not a useful vote, which was evidently needed.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

And I was right to; pirate party got less than 1% of votes, also due to the fact they couldn’t afford to have their voting paper in most places.

France. The parties have to pay the government if they want their ballot already present at the election place. As a citizen, you may also bring any ballot you want (within some very reasonable rules), so the smaller parties instruct you to print your own to save on costs.

HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware (www.tomshardware.com)

On May 26, a user on HP’s support forums reported that a forced, automatic BIOS update had bricked their HP ProBook 455 G7 into an unusable state. Subsequently, other users have joined the thread to sound off about experiencing the same issue....

To expand: said M.2 SSD contains all of your data, and can be plugged into another computer to recover it, put it on a USB drive or upload it to an online drive. A local PC repair shop is going to be unable to make the PC work again at present, but they can help you with extracting the SDD and your data for less than $100.

How so? A Samsung or pixel with default settings would also behave that way, possibly even more securely because it wouldn’t show the thieves your number.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy’s massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It’s been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let’s say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they’re what’s colloquially referred to...

A hexbear in that thread is literally claiming that “the soldiers did everything they could to avoid hurting him” when there’s a photo of him lying dead on the street after the tanks have gone through. They don’t think it’s fine, they’re saying it didn’t happen (curious)

This is done all the time to sell games that aren’t available as CD keys, against TOS.

The seller usually gives you a login to a webmail they control, and the account is tied to that email. You can then change the email on the account and you have access to the original email to confirm the move.

The lack of last-last gen hardware on the used market suggests this isn’t true. Even if it were available, the buyers will run it and the overall energy consumption will still increase. It’s not like old hardware disappears after it’s replaced with newer models.

It’s fed to an ai. Supposedly so you can ask it “what’s this product and where can I buy it fast” instead of using your fingers like a normal person.

From their site:

Fedora with user-friendly fixes added.

It seems the fixes are mostly related to better onboarding and avoiding the terminal for basic stuff, like adding yum repos. If you’re already familiar with Linux it shouldn’t offer you much beyond the nice-to-have kernel patches and better Nvidia compatibility.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

Not possible really. The protocol Lemmy uses requires accounts, not only as a soft requirement, but the software your instance would be interacting with requires it to function.

I used to work for a very very large company and there, a team of 9 people and I’s entire jobs was ensuring that the shitty qradar stack kept running (it did not want to do so). I would like to make abundantly clear that our job was not to use this stack at all, simply to keep it running. Using it was another team’s job.

Kagi works fine.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

I was there too. Do try the freebies and see how you like it, there’s nothing to lose. Personally, that convinced me and I switched to 300 searches, then I got a new job for which I was making lots of searches and outgrew it so now I’m on the unlimited. IMO ultimate is useless unless you really like the vision or something, I just pay for a working product.

Because if you throw enough money at them, they’ll trip over themselves trying to fix your production critical issue in 4 hours or less, and that’s valuable to business because they get to go “it’s not our fault the site was down and we lost $2 million, it’s our vendor’s support team that was inadequate”

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

It is sadly no longer possible. The reason is simple: if your goal is to make a real review site, either you’re taking in money for reviews, or someone else is and posting it to your site. The insurmountable costs associated with not doing either means every site out there is going to be garbage.

If you’re not yet into very good mechanical keyboards, my personal suggestion is to go shopping on AliExpress with $40 and spend half of it on a cheap mechanical (my daily driver is a 17€ skylion) and the other half on a set of key caps.

Sure it’s not gonna be great, but unless you’re accustomed to very high end boards, it’ll suit you just fine without breaking the bank and it’ll still better than anything razer has produced ever. If you have the time for it, you could also oil the switches when you get the board, that usually has a very good effect on feel.

Maybe it’s time we invent JPUs (json processing units) to equalize the playing field.

In fact, this is actively worse than doing nothing at all. Remote peers will download a block, see that it’s corrupted, discard it, and blacklist op for sending them bad blocks.

themoonisacheese ,

Because the main criticism of this class of products is “why in the fuck would I need a device for this? my phone already has a data plan, a microphone, and a camera. Make it an app” and the response is some vague “oh well it’s so advanced (it’s not.) it couldn’t possibly run on a phone”.

The vision is that once TPUs become affordable enough to run these models on-device, you would need a device that has such a TPU and you would go to them. But this is completely overlooking the fact that all snapdragons and the like would also have the same TPUs integrated, and also we’re not there yet, so for as long as you need to send the query to openAI’s API, why is this not an app?

Crack the games. Yet another instance of pirates having a better experience than costumers.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

On one hand I agree that most people probably won’t change. On the other, the difference between an OS and websites is that windows has very little exclusivity left. If you want to read Facebook content, you go on Facebook. If you want to watch fallout, you go on prime. If you want to watch long-form content (relative to TikTok), you go to youtube.

If you want a good OS, you’re not forced by Microsoft to exclusively use windows. There are some pockets (like Xbox game pass games) but overall the average user could realistically switch to debian, Ubuntu or mint and not actually materially change what they do and watch on their computer, whereas if you decided to stop using Netflix, yes the experience of watching would be better but you wouldn’t actually be experiencing the same content.

If you like this then I’d recommend reading more papers published at sigbovik. Favorites include “do programming socks make you better at programing?”, “making hard drives by increasingly stupid and unworkable means” and “a formal mathematical proof that I am transgender”

Win 11 PC "Critical Process Error" BSOD on every startup attempt

I leave my computer running for long stretches because it also acts as a plex server. I turned my monitor on last night to open steam, and the window didn’t render in; I didn’t think much of it, but before I could restart my PC, I got a “memory management” BSOD. I turned off XMP, as well as taking out each RAM stick, but...

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

You should run memtest for 24 hours with all ram sticks in.

It definitely looks like your ram is somehow faulty, have you tried resetting CMOS beyond just turning off XMP? It could also be your motherboard’s VRM overheating, but i don’t know how you would test that without a bunch of thermocouples.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes. Your ram is bad and you can throw it in the trash (please do recycle it) and buy new stick. Sorry that happened to you, I know it sucks.

Has anyone here encountered a problem with Fitgirl repacks where it keeps going until it fills your drive?

I was trying to install a repack of The Sims 3 with all of the expansions, full size about 31 GB, onto a drive that had about 300 GB of free space. Left it running overnight, woke up to my computer completely locked up because the repack had filled every single bit on my SSD....

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

Nope. Just commenting to let you know that on Linux, you should check the 2Gb of ram box because the installer behaves in a way that can make it crash on Linux if you don’t and well, clicking the box is a simple fix.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

Me neither. But it’s worth saying anyway.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

I update my packages every day on debian. I have yet to have something break. The only issue I ever had was steam got uninstalled when dist-upgrading from debian 11 to 12. Promptly reinstalled, of course all my games were still on disk.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah there are plenty of kwin effect you can install that would make it as pretty as windows 11 if that’s important to you. Just like there are plenty of themes you can install if you want a macOS experience instead

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

I doesn’t have auto hotkey because for the most part, you can control Linux from the command-line without someone having to invent a new scripting language from scratch to control it.

I heavily recommend you familiarize yourself with bash and the system commands you’ll need to send key presses, move windows, spawn and kill programs, etc.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

EAC is now largely compatible with Linux, but devs have to enable support per game.

I recommend browsing protondb to see how (if) people have made games with anticheat work, you might need to change proton versions, add launch options etc.

Fall guys works. I used to play it on my stem deck. Fortnite is notoriously busted though.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

An alternative is python, it can do GUIs easily, and it does have mouse-control facilités as well and it is cross plaform. That being said generally on Linux you don’t even need to automate mouse click, as almost all of it can be controllers with straight up commands.
