It’s because they are all fascists. “Conservative” in America is just a synonym. Fascism has always historically been a boon to corporations due to their integration into the corrupt machine.

Corporations could not care less if someone is “conservative,” what they care about is money, power, and control. And fascism seems to be a good way to get that done, while also having the added benefit (in their minds) of causing millions of humans to suffer.

mozz , in DeSantis vetoes all arts grants in Florida
@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

Because arts uplift, and misery is a huge part of the engine of fascism

Well adjusted societies have less temptation for it on the pro side, and a lot stronger and more inspired resistance to it from the anti side. It needs to breed sickness in order to really take hold and thrive.

I doubt DeSantis has that much of an organized plan for it, of course; I think it’s simple mean spirited ness on his part that he happened to see some vulnerable people that he can punish.

tiefling ,

Art is also political, and more popular with open minded people than regressives. Fascists have historically hated art.

meeeeetch ,

Not entirely true, they can’t get enough of art that is exactly like the things they already like. A boring landscape that could have been painted a century earlier? They love that shit.

But if you dare try to get creative (with message or medium) they will demand your head.

vaultdweller013 ,

Id say that is exactly why they hate art. Art is inherently an extension of oneself, everything from a beserk warrior creating poetry as they fight to a master craftsman working for a week straight on a statue are expressions of art. Hell even things not generally considered art could still be classified as being from the same expression, like a person restoring and touching up an old axe.

Fascistshate personhood, they wish to strip away all that is unique if not in a literal sense then by a cultural sense. They hat the broad capacity of mankind thusly they hate art. Reminder Hitler threw a bitch fit when German archeologistswere digging up actual ancient Germanic and pre Germanic villages because it broke his narrative.

mozz ,
@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

True. And art brings people together who might then talk to each other and find allies and form a base of communication centered around something other than "do what I say or I'll punish you." There's lots not to like about it if you're trying to destroy a country's democratic institutions.

ameancow ,

This is the better answer. People don’t want a bleak, colorless world, they want art that makes them feel good.

But art isn’t something that makes you feel good necessarily. It can but it also can make you feel other things, it’s a tool for conveying feelings and ideas to someone else, it’s a type of communication. We were supposed to have been taught this as children, that art is communication and we have to be able to hear and see things that make us uncomfortable or we will never, ever succeed in life at the things we want.

Fascists don’t want people empowered, they want people’s imagination squashed so people don’t imagine an alternative narrative to the propaganda that keeps people propping up their dear leader. All channels of communication will be controlled.

This is some toddler-level conceptual understanding. When we start banning forms of communication then everyone should stand up and point at someone trying to undo society. This is a real threat to everything we’ve accomplished as a species.

    MxM111 , in Automakers Want AM Radios Out of Cars. Congress Is About to Require Them

    Requiring the installation of analog AM radios in automobiles is an unnecessary action that would impact EV range, efficiency, and affordability at a critical moment of accelerating adoption,” said Albert Gore, executive director of ZETA, a clean vehicle advocacy group that opposes the AM radio requirement.

    I cried. They install like big screen TVs now instead of console with buttons and it is the radio which is expensive and eats the battery?! Please note, an amplifier and speakers are already in the car, so they just talk about the radio receiver, which in old days could run couple of days or more with AA batteries.

    FuglyDuck ,
    @FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

    There was an arstechnica piece that was a bit sooner (it’s passed the house). They said 82 million people “use AM radio”. (Most of that is probably while driving.)

    The argument for it is basically, that AM-radio listeners are declining and that means stations are closing up. If they remove them, AM radio peeps “loose” the largest segment of their audience.

    The “concern” is that the public warning system relies on 77 of the 4.5k stations to broadcast warnings.(emergency and weather/hazard radios)

    The issue here is that it’s basically bullshit. They could just buy the towers as a stop gap until better systems come into play. (Though to be fair, as old as it is, it’s pretty much the best for that kind of alert. Might be permanent.) and its really doesn’t matter- AM radio is dying; at least as entertainment ornmews services.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    I think it would be very difficult and very expensive to build enough towers to cover states like Alaska. A lot of people listen to AM radio there.

    prole ,

    I’m guessing people will just start putting separate radios in their cars and use a bluetooth connector or something.

    That’s fine and all, but it will just become a hobbyist thing like CB Radio…

    I enjoy listening to NPR while I’m driving, but I doubt I would go through the trouble of buying a separate radio to keep sitting on my passenger seat or something?

    Hell, the off-the-shelf radio-on-a-chip components they use in their stereos probably already have the physical capability of receiving AM radio; but I’m willing to bet the motors or some other component produces interference that would be difficult to engineer around.

    derf82 ,

    The issue is the motors generate EM emissions that interfere with AM reception. To still have AM, they have to add shielding, which adds cost, as well as weight that will reduce range and efficiency.

    MxM111 ,

    OK, it might cost a bit to install shielding, but it is not like a heavy thing - for AM can be done with metal net with rather large cells, which weights nothing and requires zero additional power.

    Wogi ,

    An AM radio receiver would easily fit in the palm of your hand. You could shield it with material that weighs no more than a pound.

    But it’s not healthy! Yeah no kidding, when I eat a burger it’s generally not for the health benefits.

    MilitantVegan ,

    Are you referring to plant-based burgers? That would definitely apply to Beyond and Impossible as they add way too much coconut oil, and salt. In other words they’re unhealthy for some of the same reasons animal flesh is unhealthy, although they are still less harmful than their animal counterparts just by lacking the animal proteins.

    chetradley , (edited )

    Pretty much. Although I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t add salt to a burger anyway, and the beyond/impossible burgers don’t need any extra, so I don’t think the sodium content is a super fair comparison.

    Well… He also has very few friends in Israel. Bibi prefers Trump (who recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which was a Bad Thing), and the way he’s forcing Biden to eat shit right now seems like a pretty easy way to put his thumb on the scale.

    That would be nice, but iirc he needs a legal justification or an act passed by congress to actually halt arms shipments. He made moves not too long ago against a specific part of the Israeli military that was found to be committing war crimes, which Netanyahu is opposing. If we get lucky, he might be able to use Netanyahu’s lack of cooperation to suspend or halt military aid entirely. His rhetoric has been trending in that direction, so I’m hopeful.

    Woozythebear ,

    Are you lying to yourself or to us? He just signed a bill to give them billions of dollars and veto every resolution the UN comes up with while also trying to block the arrest warrant. You need to actually do some research and stop watching DNC propaganda news networks.

    Maggoty ,

    The Leahy Law. And the one unit they went after was smoke for the entire operation in Gaza. They aren’t letting men leave the combat area right now. Just detaining and torturing them. This isn’t just one problem unit.

    It’s not that simple though; Israel wants to eliminate Hamas (and they have plenty of reason for that – if Mexico attacked the US like Hamas attacked Israel, there would simply put no longer be a Mexico).

    It would be tone deaf to Israel to say “leave Gaza” without that mission accomplished. They claim they don’t even want the area, they just want Hamas gone.

    Furthermore, Hamas is fighting with guerilla tactics. They’re intentionally trying to provoke war crimes. Israel doesn’t have to be so dang willing to fall for the trap. However, Hamas is making it exceptionally hard to fight a clean war from what I’ve read. Citizens in the Gaza strip are not just being abused by the IDF but by Hamas.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if Biden has his own Intel to back that all up. If it were as obvious as people want it to be, I’m pretty sure we would’ve stopped sending aid by now.

    Mexico attacking the US is an invalid comparison. Palestine isn’t attacking Israel, Hamas is

    HurlingDurling ,
    @HurlingDurling@lemmy.world avatar

    Exactly, it’s more like the cartels attacked the US and we in retaliation started bombing mexico out of existence while invading them and taking all of their land.

    Dark_Arc ,
    @Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg avatar

    You do understand Hamas, the same Hamas that attacked Israel, is effectively the government of the Gaza strip right? The Palestinian authority had no recognized authority there.

    So that’s also a “terrible metaphor” because “it would be like the government of Mexico was the drug cartels, the drug cartels (which are the government) attacked the US and we in retaliation started bombing Mexico out of existence.”

    There’s no perfect metaphor.

    Mexico attacked the US like Hamas attacked Israel

    Bad comparison. Mexico is an independent nation recognized by the UN. No nation disputes it’s sovereignty over it’s lands.

    Palestine is dependent on Israel. Israel controls the flow of people and goods from it’s borders. Israel controls electrical power to Palestine. Israel geographically surrounds Palestine.

    One actor holds all the cards here. One actor has the power to improve conditions in Gaza (people don’t generally choose to support violent militants for no reason) and chooses to bomb it.

    Dark_Arc ,
    @Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg avatar

    No nation disputes it’s sovereignty over it’s lands.

    That’s not true, see Ukraine and plenty of other nations over history.

    Mexico is also the closest to “has a terrorist organization capable of carrying out an attack near the scale of 9-11 living right next door and running the government.”

    You’re right it isn’t even close because the US government would never let it get that close.

    Israel geographically surrounds Palestine.

    Neither the Gaza strip (where all the fighting is going on AFAIK) or the west bank are “geographically surrounded.” I checked a map because you legit made me question my geography.

    One actor has the power to improve conditions in Gaza

    I don’t think that’s entirely fair either. Israel can’t “fix” Palestine anymore than the US can fix the problems in Mexico … unless they take over Palestine. Nobody wants that…

    They could definitely do more to let aid in. They could definitely do better about not hitting civilian targets… But this is not a “just do nothing and everything will get better silly Israel” situation. I think that’s a pretty absurd take as popular it seems here.

    sebinspace ,

    Lmao even if he did that right this second, people would still be bitching that he didn’t do it months ago. Sure, it would have been great if he had started off that way, but what’s past is past, and if you want him to change course, then let the fucker change course

    Woozythebear ,

    So 10 minutes after someone murders someone and they say I won’t do that again, we should just say “the past is the past and at least he’s not murdering anymore”?

    Biden needs to be held accountable for the role he played in the genocide in Gaza. The right thing to do would be for him to end it at any cost, but he still needs to be held accountable for his crimes.

    There’s some definitive “do it, you won’t” energy here.

    Which to be fair, it would look really bad for Boeing if this guy “committed suicide” too. To the point it might actually be safer to be the second guy.

    Burn_The_Right ,

    Boeing isn’t worried about “looking bad”. They’ll kill this whistleblower too if they get the opportunity.

    Dark_Arc ,
    @Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg avatar

    There’s no way whoever ordered the hit the first time (assuming it really was an ordered hit … and it probably was) individually is going to want that heat.

    It’s one of those things that “if one of your acquaintances dies, it’s plausible it really was an accident like you said. If people who hangout with you keep dropping … a lot more eyes are looking at you.”

    It’s probably not a true “company” position to murder whistle blowers, but somebody presumably thought it was in their own best interest.
