No??

I’ve supported engineering at several privately funded nuclear fusion companies, though all of them, this Chinese company included, are building a product out of public school research.

Off the top of my head there’s:

  • CFS
  • TAE technologies
  • Thea
  • Zap Energy

And several more…

@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Good points and questions. First wall interaction is going to be an interesting problem for this team to work around.

Built, physically operational reactors that operate as close to Q=1 as they can, with all the diagnostics included.

The diagnostics are very important, as plasma instabilities have been, and continue to be, the critical issue preventing anything useful coming out of our decades of fusion reactor design. All these companies are sharing data on overcoming plasma instability issues, with multiple geometries aimed at evaluating how plasma responds to different inputs in different environments. We’re all trying to understand how to control and compress something far too hot to physically touch.

@naturalgasbad scaling fusion isn’t a trivial problem, and saying it like it is indicates a lack of background knowledge. This isn’t a competition between companies (no matter what our CEOs suggest), as we in industry quietly all agree that any of us that cracks this unchains humanity from the solar system. Because government funding has unfortunately sucked so much ass, we’re sort of using private money to get the basic research done. We’d be so much farther ahead otherwise.

Lmfao all those assholes know how to do is hand out speeding tickets that get laughed out of court.

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 | The new standard will replace SMS as the default communication protocol between Android and iOS devices (www.theverge.com)

The long-awaited day is here: Apple has announced that its Messages app will support RCS in iOS 18. The move comes after years of taunting, cajoling, and finally, some regulatory scrutiny from the EU....

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think sms will go away, that ping is fundamental to GSM & LTE so far as I can tell.

You may need an app that explicitly taps into the sms feature though

Is Craigslist Dying?

I went to Craigslist in my local area for the first time in awhile. I used to like “best of” Craigslist because some of them were great, there still are some, but its just not the same. A community I used to visit had about half the number of posts as I remember, and of jobs and things for sale, I would say roughly half the...

I saw the same when I lived in OC. It’s pretty lively up here in Seattle too.

Just about the only good thing he’d done.

Very lucid and clear comment, now I gotta ponder it. Thanks for the kindling.

That’s what the article theoretically exemplifies, avoiding emission in the first place is the best bet.

RubberElectrons ,

As a PE, fuck that guy, that’s fucked up.

Private industry now, which has its own problems. I previously worked in water/sewage, so even a recycled design works. The focus was quality for the public, we just had 6 guys doing a 2 man job. I secretly think there are more people than jobs at this point.

Private industry in a different field, it’s all about speed, quality be damned. Luckily I’ve gotten the chance to show quality leads to less time wasted overall.

Still a love of meetings and shit though, private or public. Waste of life time.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Lol I’m a mechanical engineer with a lot of experience in software, so maybe that alters my protective a little.

It’s a beautiful Friday, enjoy.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Nah, what’re you talking about?

Case in point: whose foot?

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I so love the diversity of life here on this planet, it is truly magnificent.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Do you think we Americans are ok with that? Life in this country is complicated in its own ways.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I appreciate the clarification.

We’ll do the best we can against an extremely well funded and entrenched oligarchy, controlling what we read/see/hear as effectively as possible. Places like Lemmy are sort of a weakness in their systems.

We Americans also have ourselves to look at, as animals it is hard to invite change when our basic needs are mostly met, e.g. our toilets work and we can buy food. We can do better, but it’s a bit like climbing the walls of the maze vs running around within.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Group buy-in is generally a foundational requirement for future changes…

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t agree.

Unfortunately, you’re a perfect example of the success of messaging being broadcast directly to deflate the sense of power and ability we all have, in spite of the walls confining us for tropical fruit.

Follow your thoughts to their conclusion, as designed: we’ve broken too much, and they’re too powerful, there’s nothing we can do.

It’s not true.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Pitiful.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry about that. You correctly guessed the right meaning of the word.

Let’s keep moving, we’ll all do better so long as we can ignore the people trying to slow us down. Best of luck to you in your corner of the world.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

You sound quite embittered. Try taking a vacation.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Bullshit, these fucks led to hundreds of terrified deaths in pursuit of profit alone.

Accountants, engineers, manages, round em up and make them look through the wallets and personal possessions of the people who perished.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

The trick is how many more of us there are. The aristocracy seemed pretty complacent and untouchable, until one day when that changed.

Not saying it’s gotta get to that point, but making people see the direct consequences of their greed would be so good for us all.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

No. As an engineer, I can and will vouch for building a larger, stronger chain of regret against greed, lest this type of shit happen again years down the line.

The more people scarred by touching and feeling the results of their own greed and hubris, the longer it’ll be before we see such disregard for human life in an engineering firm.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I think you’re right, and maybe add a modification. As a fellow engineer, I’ll suggest there’s a third option that’s more realistic when it comes to knowledgeable and lay people having a discussion:

  • as mentioned in the meme, scientists can and do learn stuff that improves overall understanding.
  • the quest for improved understanding is usually sparked by a strange or unique observation, sometimes by scientists, sometimes by the much larger population of regular folks
  • Provided there is good intent and respect from both parties, I believe it’s critically important that people who have observed something unique be able to discuss it somehow with people who have particular skill related to that phenomena

What seems to be missing out of a lot of these misinformation tikTube fights is precisely that fundamental lack of respect. I’ve observed it’s very easy to destabilize a calm discussion with small amounts of inconsiderate speech by people within or outside the discussion. Sometimes it seems purposeful, but the result is a much slowed ability to communicate. That’s bad for us all.

I got to pet one once, he closed his beak on my fingers but because of how long the break is, he couldn’t apply real pressure. It was pretty interesting to feel a bird play with your fingers who couldn’t actually hurt you.

This is compared to my little conures who instinctively nip out of fright if my partner pulls back the shower curtain in the other room haha. Ah… My poor fingers.

@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. They’re very efficient militarily, as is Finland. See the Skjold-class as an example of their engineering style.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure how I missed that J. Whoops.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I love both of mine, but damn do they not quit hahaha

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I honestly have trouble believing that, real talk.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed, but is there a directory to find alternatives that are both reputable and reasonable in their pricing?

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Oh cool, didn’t realize USD has NFC support!

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Some number of apps are using pay for more than NFC payment, for ex some ticketing applications from concert organizers don’t seem to offer an alternative to use of pay. I was also hoping for support of NFC payment somehow, but had low hopes because I expect there’s PCI compliance or whatever.

Because I don’t know the backend of the compliance process etc, not an I particularly interested in researching that, figured I’d ask in this community and find at least a couple of knowledgeable answers.

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve got two cards so equipped… common knowledge at this point. Who was your response aimed at?

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Correct, but unfortunately I’ve found myself less likely to lose my phone than my separate wallet 🤦

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Ok, thanks very much for this, I’ll look into this app.

I’ll go on the record acknowledging that inevitably someone is selling my records and habits, but key is knowing the data is siloed across a few different brokers. If someone wants my info, I have to hope adding a bit of a paywall across it will help a bit.

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I wanted NFC for payments if that were possible. I also need NFC for things like gym access, where it appears they’re using the NFC system to grant access. Adoption of that process unfortunately uses Google pay.

Want, vs need in a single question.

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t need it instead of my credit card, but I don’t ride the train often enough to bring the NFC card along. Ideally it’d live on my phone for when I do need it.

The real issue is how tightly integrated with Google pay everything is. I’m simply looking for at least some of the features gpay has without using gpay.

If I could at least use my phone to NFC my gym as well as my train rides, I’d be very happy. Credit card payments, I don’t care as much.

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I… Do? What about the other stuff that uses gPay?

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Neat.

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Is it good shit or what

RubberElectrons OP ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I guess you elected not to read the original question. I’m looking for something to support using my phone to access things like the gym and the subway, in a privacy respecting manner. If that’s not possible, I can continue with my regular methods.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

If they’re ok with the resulting technical shortfalls, cool. Another company degrades back into the mire of mediocrity.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly, missing a bit of dickskin is a lot less troubling to me then how hard we all work and have no real protection from the hurdles life sometimes throws at us.

Who’s taking care of my elderly family, spread out across the states? My nephews have to choose between affording a home by both going to work, or actually raising their young kids. Where is our eldercare, our universal healthcare, our pre-k benefits?

I have my reasons to gripe about society, and crazy as mutilating a baby under the pretense of health is, I don’t think it’s as deadly or dangerous to us all long term, as these oligarchs and their sycophants robbing us of our dues, enabled by an unregulated economy.

The clock keeps ticking on the detonator.
