Even moreso if you consider the old Latin alphabet that used V and didn’t have U.

Zink ,

Insert “use Linux” joke. But I’m absolutely serious when I say that using my company’s M365 stuff using the web versions in Firefox on Linux is pretty pleasant.

Zink ,

Call center go brrrrrrrr?

Zink ,

Yeah it’s fun seeing people figuring out which loophole companies use. Is it really anything other than they save a tiny bit of money by not giving a shit about your experience.

Zink ,

Funny stuff, but in reality I hope they realize that if all the free users leave, that could get a lot of content creators to branch out, and they could also take the paid users with them.

I pay for premium because I watch YouTube all the time, multiple people in my house watch it on multiple devices, and we even get use out of YouTube music. It’s worth more to me than all other streaming services combined. But I’m there for all the creators and the content they put out, not for anything else unique about the YouTube experience. All they have on their side is install base, infrastructure cost, and inertia. Those are big things to overcome, but if they drive enough people away things could definitely change.

Zink ,

Yeeeeah… I guess I’d respond to that with basically the same thing. They are good enough today, but they aren’t guaranteed anything beyond that.

Zink ,

That’s how my Dell work machine is. The switch slides some red plastic over the lens.

Zink ,

I’ve noticed that I’m in away mode way more in office than when working from home. Nobody has ever said anything to me, but I guess I get more self conscious about it when I’m at home.

But then I’ve realized that ever since I started running Linux and using the browser versions of the M365 apps, I’m in Away mode a lot and I should just ignore it.

Zink ,

Or “Once I am elected, meat is back on the menu boys!”

The half the sheep cheer and tell him to eat those other annoying sheep over there.

Zink ,

Honestly I think you’re giving the sheep’s human counterparts too much credit. They don’t acknowledge that they are potential prey, even while actively being victimized.

Dimmable RGB LED bulbs are for this. One command can turn on all the lights to 100% in soft white color. Another can set them all to 1% and orange color. The color change makes the room even darker than just setting the lights to 1% at normal color.

That’s the family-friendly version anyway. If I’m the only one up, I’m totally content with everything off.

We all know he was as white as the new fallen snow!

They’ll bury you in a lunch box!

Zink ,

Sounds like we might need some new regulations around parts availability & stocking up before subcomponents go obsolete.

At some point it becomes an environmental thing just as much as a consumer protection thing.

Zink ,

I think we will stick with built-in batteries rather than any kind of swapping. I always thought the battery swapping idea was neat, but the real world cares about money more than anything.

To have ubiquitous battery swapping stations would be a huge amount of infrastructure. But to have ubiquitous vehicle charging you basically just have to run wires to existing parking spots.

That is combined with the fact that I think batteries, especially LFP batteries, have a lot more cycles in their lifetime than your 10 year estimate would suggest. I’ve read 4000 cycles for LFP in a few places. That’s more than a decade even if you fully charge and discharge the battery every single day. Drive a more realistic number of miles/kms per day and then the chronological age of the battery might be more important than how many cycles are on it.

Ever since we got the OK to dual boot our machines at work, I’ve been daily driving Mint Cinnamon unapologetically and with no plans to change.

I’m looking to close tickets rather than tinker with my install. It’s nice to start with something fully featured working great out of the box. But it’s still Linux, and based on Debian/Ubuntu at that, so I can run/install/change whatever I want. I don’t feel restricted just because somebody else did a ton of configuration for me before I installed it.

If this were 20 years ago, I’d totally be an Arch/Gentoo user, constantly breaking things and troubleshooting, distro hopping, and all that. But the busy middle aged parent version of me currently speaking is extra grateful for all the effort volunteers (and some companies) have put into making new installs so freaking easy.

Washington man arrested after fatally shooting teen who had BB gun (www.usatoday.com)

Myers, who says he’s a licensed security guard, was sitting in his car Wednesday to conduct “overwatch” while his son trains because “he has seen numerous crimes occur” in the parking lot, according to the probable cause statement....

Zink ,

I mean, if I’m going to go initiate an armed conflict with some criminals, I’d want backup on the way no matter what, right?

But that wasn’t going through this maniac’s mind. He was way too excited about it being his time to act!

Zink ,

Lol yeah we would need to divide it so that each month can be dedicated to a subcategory of greed.

You’ve got No Healthcare month, No Free School Meals month, Income Inequality month, etc, and maybe we start each year by dedicating January to Nixon, Reagan, and the year 1971.

Zink ,

Don’t threaten me with a good time!

(Not a Tesla shareholder tho)

False news WITH plausible deniability!

Don't you all get tired of the constant negativity?

Despite not subscribing to political communities and having a large number of content filters based on keywords, my feed here is still for a large part all negative articles and ragebait. Elon Musk this and Israel that. Microsoft ruining windows, AI ruining internet, right wingers and capitalism ruining the world, police being...

Zink ,

Yeah, but in life in general, not on here. I’ve been pushing unnecessary negativity out of my life. Even in my own family, I’ve learned how people that love me and are nice to me can still be a total fucking downer and miserable to be around.

If I’m hopping on Lemmy or reading/watching some news, I know I’m going to see negative stuff. But that’s fine. You can’t learn to deal with negative shit by sheltering yourself from it completely. Think of it like your mental health immune system.

Zink ,

I heard getting pegnant can hurt!

Zink ,

I remember watching movies as a kid where the children were these clever little heroes and the adults were morons or bad guys they had to deal with. It’s fun for kids to see the tables turned and watch the children in the movie save the day or outsmart the dumb adult.

I got a very strong vibe like that (but worse) while reading this story. These people are caught up in a fantasy they’ve been sold where they have to save everything they love from evil. They seem to live in a fantasy movie world where if you feel like the righteous underdog, and other “good” people tell you the same thing, then surely you are the hero! You can’t listen to evidence and reason from outsiders, they’re just trying to trick you!

Kansas Constitution does not include a right to vote, state Supreme Court majority says (apnews.com)

The Kansas Supreme Court offered a mixed bag in a ruling Friday that combined several challenges to a 2021 election law, siding with state officials on one provision, reviving challenges to others and offering the possibility that at least one will be halted before this year’s general election....

Zink ,

Well now that you’ve said that out loud, I could see conservatives being all over finding reasons to disqualify representation from blue states. (By which I mean make up reasons that sound good to a base that doesn’t think good)

Zink ,

Obviously people won’t respond well to being forced into something unknown or intimidating.

However, if you had a way to get it in front of them, many normal PC users would be totally fine and even have a better experience. Just go with a well supported distro made for convenience and a windows-like desktop. I think ordinary Mint Cinnamon is the obvious choice to start with.

Zink ,

Yeah that would be weird to see Trump forced into awkward rambling doublespeak that doesn’t make sense if you listen to the words.

XD

Zink ,

Yeah, but I think the admiration they get from countless others is an even bigger problem. It’s as if they are the pinnacle of what a human can be. Because… money?

Zink ,

I love this image, and this was one of my favorite numbers in science too. Sometimes I think it’s more difficult to imagine how insanely small the atomic scale is than how insanely large the cosmic scale is.

New FPS Built Using Doom Tech Is Better Than Most AAA Shooters (kotaku.com)

Things aren’t looking good for me. I’m a few levels into Selaco, a new FPS out now on Steam, and I’m stuck behind a bar as a group of sci-fi soldiers unload their rifles and shotguns into my hiding spot. I’m also low on health. So yeah, a bad spot to be in. I take a deep breath and try something....

Zink ,

Oh you mean the Serious Sam series? Tons of fun!

Zink ,

I remember being so psyched about the original Serious Sam that I pirated a copy to play right away, and then bought a boxed copy as soon as I saw it in Best Buy.

Hype confirmed!

Zink ,

That was my takeaway too. I knew Ebola was a big long shape, so it didn’t stand out much, but then “ohhh of course rabies just randomly looks like invisible nano bullets!”

Zink ,

Fortunately I at least have Firefox on Linux. But then when I need to use Windows for something… well look at that, also Firefox!

Zink ,

When I read your post I saw the “head weasels” as a few tiny little cute C-suite assholes wearing little suits. They’ve been the top dogs (tiny ones) for so long that they’re completely out of touch with the ordinary fuzzball.

But yeah a different interpretation makes much more sense in context.

Zink ,

See now THAT part was metaphorical unlike the literal treatment I gave everything else, lol.

Zink ,

A head pops out of the water

“Just use miiiiint!”

Zink ,

Ehh, mutually assured destruction has worked so far, but there are some crazy assholes out there who might not act rationally.

Zink ,

It really is funny. Gobbler’s Knob is fun to visit, but much smaller than you’d expect. There’s Intercourse, Climax, and Beaver. Or if you want to get away from it all you could go to Moon or Mars.

Zink ,

That kind of crap is how conservatives see people (in my experience), so it’s a little bit funny to see that reasoning turned against their ridiculous hero.

Zink ,

While he’s no doubt very high intelligence, I think there’s a combination of personality, personal interests, and drive that these outstanding people have. For some people, the work is what they want to be doing AND what makes them happy/fulfilled.

Like you, I am not like that. A productive day at work can feel great, but I’m never sitting at home thinking I’d rather be working on some idea for an app or game.

Society has taught me that what I SHOULD want to do is that “productive” stuff. Work long hours, strike it rich on my own or climb the ladder at work, etc. But the wiring in my brain does not get fulfillment and happiness from that stuff. But spending that time on family, pets, and hobbies has greatly increased my quality of life over the past few years.

Zink ,

I use Linux cuz the IT & security folks at work gave us the OK for developers to dual boot.

Switching between the OSs makes windows feel so bad in comparison. Fortunately I basically only boot windows to make sure it stays in good standing with updates and network security. And this isn’t some hand crafted lightweight install. I threw Mint on there and it’s worked perfectly since day 1.

Zink ,

I like to consider what I would or wouldn’t regret when I’m older. I’ve heard plenty of successful people lament not being a better parent while focused on their career. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard somebody regret spending time with their family instead of their work.

Zink ,

I don’t like some kind of processed garlic seasonings and flavors. Sometimes I swear it makes me feel crappy too.

But when I’m chucking fresh cloves into my garlic press to make some egg fried rice from scratch? Load it up!!

Zink ,

I can think of exactly one person I’ve ever met that would use this. It was a dude in college who would walk across campus back to his dorm holding an open laptop in one arm and occasionally using the other hand to interact with it.

This was when you needed a PCMCIA card to have WiFi on your laptop, so it was probably new and exciting to have that mobility.

Zink ,

That’s an interesting headline at that link. It reads to me basically as “liberals are better equipped to deal with the unfiltered real world” which tracks IMO.

New Louisiana law will criminalize approaching police under certain circumstances (apnews.com)

Critics of a new Louisiana law, which makes it a crime to approach within 25 feet (7.6 meters) of a police officer under certain circumstances, fear that the measure could hinder the public’s ability to film officers — a tool that has increasingly been used to hold police accountable....

Zink ,

…O’er the la-and of the freeeeeee!

Zink ,

I have a 70-200 I use on a full frame body and it’s awesome. But my phone can zoom in too even if the quality will be way worse. There’s even some optical zoom to it since phones have multiple lenses these days.
