gedaliyah , to aboringdystopia in NPR is not sure why Aaron Bushnell set himself fire despite it being clearly mentioned in the video. Omit Gaza but mention the hostages taken by Hamas
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

An earlier version of the sentence reads (bold mine):

As of Sunday afternoon, NPR was not able to independently verify the man’s identity or motives.

Although there were indications that he was a US servicemember (he was wearing a uniform) and likely his identity - as you mentioned, he recorded the video - they were not verified at that time.

Once his Identity was verified, the reporter removed that part of the line. Once his motives were verified, she removed that part of the line as well. This is just how news reporting works.

Linkerbaan OP , (edited )
@Linkerbaan@lemmy.world avatar

No they posted his name so his identity was verified, they were just not sure about his motivations." Let’s check that quote

My name is Aaron Bushnell. I am an active-duty member of the US Air Force, and I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I’m about to engage in an extreme act of protest — but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.

Free Palestine

Geez this is all so vague, we only heard his name!

Let’s write an article about it not mention anything else from the video!

Zipitydew ,

Turns out some people aren’t terminally online to see every video before it’s taken down.

Linkerbaan OP ,
@Linkerbaan@lemmy.world avatar

Turns out the video was reposted a gazillion times everywhere after being taken down and it was practically impossible to avoid it.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Actually, I spent about 5 minutes looking for it earlier but then remembered I don’t really need to expose myself to it. If it had just popped up in front of me, I’d have seen it.

Maybe you don’t use the internet like the average person does, so your experience is different from theirs?

We want journalists to be honest about what they have and haven’t verified. And if it hasn’t been verified, it’s better to be quiet about it, so your quote of “while unverified, we have received some reports of decapitated babies in one of the areas attacked” doesn’t turn into “decapitated babies found in areas attacked by Hamas.”

And yes, I deliberately chose a recent and relevant example of something that actually happened and was used to justify Israel’s response early on.

Linkerbaan OP ,
@Linkerbaan@lemmy.world avatar

You open Mastodon or Twitter, type in his name, and it pops up. Not difficult.

The beheaded babies example is particularly bad because it shows how actual journalistic standards go out of the window when israel makes a claim.

  1. There was no video or picture evidence of the beheaded babies
  2. "Journalists" did quote the claims directly
  3. "Journalists" suddenly had no problem using the words “alleged” or “suspected” to cover themselves during a developing story
  4. Relies on the most well known propaganda source in the world
  5. Manufactures consent for israel. which is why it did reach front page of every single newspaper despite being a lie.

Journalists can’t use the “journalistic integrity” cover for everything that is anti-israel while simultaneously barraging us with “IDF says Hamas tunnel network under hospital X” every single day without any evidence.

Let’s not forget NPR has been heavily pushing IDF propaganda for the last few months as well, directly pushing the Hamas rape story: Israel demands U.N. investigate charges of sexual violence by Hamas fighters

That is reports of widespread sexual violence in the Hamas attack that started this latest conflict. Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, says the U.N. has been too slow to speak out.

GILAD ERDAN: Sadly, the very international bodies that are supposedly the defenders of all women showed that when it comes to Israelis, indifference is acceptable.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

You’re cherry-picking stories if that’s how you’re classifying NPRs coverage. I’m on their site now and searched Gaza…1st 2 stories that come up are about the Michigan voters and the potential cease-fire…makes sense as those are the American-centic stories. Then we get into a story about children starving to death that unequivocally states that Israel tanks were shooting aid trucks and groups of civilians trying to get that aid. Then, a story about a nurse with Doctors without borders who was in one of their shelters when Israel opened fire on them. Again, there is no equivocation.

Linkerbaan OP ,
@Linkerbaan@lemmy.world avatar

You are cherry picking stories. Even the newest NPR version of this article is propaganda as it uses the word “war” instead of Genocide at the very top of the article, literally twisting Aarons words and lying.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/6ed9e984-8b18-4351-8f6b-b0bc4d99ea1a.png

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Would you have been happier if they said “a protest against Israel’s ‘genocide’”?

They weren’t quoting him directly in that first sentence, and regardless of how any of us feel about it personally, the ICC said this isn’t genocide. Personally, I also feel it’s a genocide, but if I said that in an article I wrote, it would be an opinion piece because, when it comes to committing crimes, the western world has generally agreed on the principle of innocent until proven guilty and we prove that guilt in courts of law.

I noticed you didn’t link to the actual article. I’m assuming at this point, based on your posting history and this interaction, that it was a deliberate choice on your part to use a screenshot instead because 4 sentences later, the same article states, "Leadinf up to the incident, Bushnell said in the video that he ‘will no longer be complicit in genocide.’ Later, as he burned in front of the Israeli Embassy, Bushnell could be seen on the livestream yelling “Free Palestine!”’

Makes it seem like you’re not arguing in good faith, which makes me want to disengage with you at this point.

npr.org/…/fire-man-israeli-embassy-washington

Linkerbaan OP ,
@Linkerbaan@lemmy.world avatar

Yes.

NPR said that according to Aaron’s social media post this is a “war” not a “Genocide” which is a lie.

DrFuggles ,

I mean, him stating a name and his motivations and verifying that it was indeed this man and those were his motives are two different things.

I like journalism that verifies statements. Is there a man by that name and is he deceased? If the answer to those questions had been “no”, it would have been an entirely different story.

Linkerbaan OP ,
@Linkerbaan@lemmy.world avatar

He was screaming “Free Palestine” while on fire. On video. A first party source.

There is zero nuance here.

The fact that the last paragraph referenced israeli hostages is the final nail in the coffin fully proving the intentions of this article.

Stop giving these propaganda writers the benefit of the doubt. It’s very clear that consent for genocide is being manufactured.

DrFuggles ,

I can scream Free Palestine and announce that I am the Pope while doing so. That doesn’t make it true.

There are many states where trucks only need one plate, and they put it on the front.

Now the supposed reason is that you might have a trailer attached sometimes. But since most truck drivers rarely ever haul with a trailer, the reason is pointless.

In my experience, white dudes follow this “rule” here and people of color put the plates on the back, you know because cops are racist pigs.

It is common for people to reg their truck as commercial in MO for instance. Thanks for being a dick. dor.mo.gov/motor-vehicle/…/fees.html

boeman ,

Well, yeah. If they don’t and are hauling more weight than their plates allow, the highway patrol will give them a ticket. If I wanted to haul over 3 tons of weight with my Tahoe, I’d have to have commercial plates even though it’s not being used as a commercial vehicle.

Until fairly recently, all trucks were licensed with the “COMMERCIAL” rated plates in MO… Even the show truck I had in the early 2000’w had to have commercial plates, and the most it ever hauled was detailing equipment.

apfelwoiSchoppen ,
@apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, this is true, but what is also true is application of the law, who and who isn’t policed. It is more often people of color getting these tickets.

boeman ,

It’s for trucks over a certain weight rating. Since most of those trucks will have trailers or large boxes on them, there’s no need for that plate

apfelwoiSchoppen ,
@apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world avatar

And states with outsourced DMVs play the trust game with folks saying their trucks are a certain weight when they aren’t.

WeirdGoesPro ,
@WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

That isn’t a negative though. You’re saying that it auto sorts downloaded content well enough that the user doesn’t even have to be aware of how to access the file manager to still use the phone effectively. That isn’t a flaw, it’s a feature.

For anyone who does have a baseline level of proficiency, the file manager is functional, and familiar. I use it to pass torrents to my server all the time.

With a terminal and a file manager on iOS, I don’t run into a single thing I need to do that I can’t.

papalonian ,

That isn’t a negative though.

We aren’t saying that they’re flaws. Read my earlier comment, I’m just making observations. Nothing wrong with not needing to use an app.

ColeSloth ,

Actually…android has the exact same app name. “Files” but I guess it’s real name if you want to make sure you’re getting the right one is “Files by Google”

For android, it seems to be the best one for finding recent stuff and navigating around. Like any newly downloaded or modified thing saved to the phone shows up under a “recently” section in Files, so it works out well for dealing with such a screwball android filing system.

Rai ,

That’s fair, but not relevant to what I was responding to hahaha

Rai ,

That’s pretty ignorant also. All phones throttle your power when your battery is old, so instead of just dying at 30% (like old android phones used to), you get a slow drain to under 5% before it dies.

It’s a 2% difference. The cutting and packaging is done (most probably) by machines. I have clinically diagnosed OCD, and I wouldn’t care about 8g of missing pasta… How much do you leave on the plate/in the pot/throw away? :)

Otoh, hitting exactly 410g (assuming the scale is calibrated, and you have the same temperature, air moisture and altitude as the factory), is very difficult. They could adjust their machines so the variation hangs a bit more towards the customer, but for them, 2% x millions of boxes = profit.

CraigeryTheKid ,

Most of our packaging machines require < 1%, target <0.5% variance (both ways). Honestly in practice, over a whole batch the total variance is extremely tiny.

Add to this story the accuracy of a household, not-calibrated scale? Yeah I’d say this seems OK.

Tolerances for food items depend a lot on item size, shape, and irregularity.

We’re DINKs just starting to push into the “living a comfortable life” range. As in, we can do what we want and enjoy doing it.

However, bringing a kid into that picture throws all of that away. Hospital bills, diapers, just the costs in general would wipe us out.

We most likely wouldn’t qualify for any reimbursements and are already maximizing the ones we have such as house financing and taxes.

I obsessively try to keep my “IOUs” to a minimum meaning aggressive mortgage payments and credit cards within the limitations of what I can pay off immediately but even that is difficult.

The house needs work - new siding and windows, unexpected issues like the boiler dieing etc. And I’m generally fearful of what we’d find behind the siding (termites??? everything not up to code?) A new job like that could turn into $40-50K that we just don’t have floating around.

I don’t go to doctors because I was afraid of what I might find. I’m lucky in the fact that my insurance is now pushing in the correct direction but still ludicrously expensive… And I mean ludicrously for the lack of services available that won’t cost me an additional fortune.

The wife also works a must-commute 9-5. Not sure how she, or both of us would be able to handle childcare needs and not feel like we would be neglecting the kid.

When would I ever be able to afford a kid in these situations?

And I am lucky to say that we are DINKs that are getting paid relatively well… How can people that are below us in income survive having kids?

themeatbridge , to lemmyshitpost in Post pics of unwashed shelf-stable eggs (this scares the americans)

In the US, there’s a concern for salmonella or other bacteria and viruses. Factory egg farming is a horror show in regards to overcrowding and hygiene. Sick birds are crammed in with healthy laying birds, and washing the eggs is one of the safest ways to prevent contamination.

It does increase the permeability of the shell, decreasing shelf life and requiring refrigeration.

If your eggs looked like this in the USA, there’s a small but non-zero chance that you’ll shit yourself to death. Probably not, but it’s scary enough.

We could improve factory farming regulations so it’s not a like a Cronenberg movie, but then eggs would be more expensive. And even if we did, and stopped washing our eggs, Americans would still want them to look clean and would still keep them in the fridge because we’ve been conditioned to expect to die on the toilet covered in wet feces if we see bird poop on the eggs.

They will delay, delay, delay until Trump is either reelected - in which case he’ll pardon himself. Or until a new president is elected in 2028. If it’s a Republican, they’ll pardon Trump on day 1. If it’s a Democrat, the Republicans in Congress will find some way to force a presidential pardon in order to keep the government funded or some other bullshit.

I think there’s a 0% chance Trump ever sees a single day in prison. Even if none of what I said above happens, he’d get a slap on the wrist at worst. I would LOVE to be proven wrong. But I’m not holding my breath.

Zoboomafoo ,

I heard that mentioned on MSNBC, 30% of the people who caucused for him say that they would not vote for him if he was convicted.

DontRedditMyLemmy ,

30% of the people who caucused for him are liars

eestileib ,

Zero chance he is in prison by election day.

At this point the only things between Trump and a jail cell are:

  1. The courts must rule in the coming days (probably this month, Jan 2024) that Presidents are subject to criminal prosecution. We know Presidents are not subject to civil prosecution, but the courts are deciding about criminal prosecution now. (Trump argues it would be “bedlam” if Presidents were subject to the law).
  2. A jury decision in mid 2024. If that jury says “guilty”, it’s over, Trump is a convicted felon.
Wogi ,

Which means he can’t vote for himself.

Convicted felons can be president.

Jordan_U , (edited )

Trump may or may not eventually end up in prison, but it’s naïve after the past 8 years to assume that there are only two ways this could all shake out, and that you can predict them.

A possibility that will almost certainly be less absurd than whatever actually happens:

Trump wins a second term, manages to get the FedSoc 6 to rule that a sitting president can’t be imprisoned because it would violate separation of powers. So multiple states are just waiting for his term to end so they can actually arrest him. (Feds can’t arrest him because he has pardoned himself for all past, present, and future crimes)

Then in the last month of his presidency he takes a diplomatic trip to Russia and just never comes back.

@Buttons@programming.dev avatar

I don’t mean there are 2 ways this can shake out. I mean there are 2 legal barriers in the way. Once the courts rule that Trump can be prosecuted, then the trial date is set for spring. The judge is motivated to hold to that trial date. The prosecutors have their evidence and arguments ready for the jury.

On the possibility of Trump pardoning himself, it’s not clear that a President can pardon himself and the supreme court would probably end up having to rule on that.

If Trump is a convicted felon, then he probably can’t get enough votes to win, but I don’t know, the cult is strong with this one.

dangblingus ,

Do you honestly believe there won’t be any stalling or controversy between now and mid-year that won’t delay it any further?

Buttons ,
@Buttons@programming.dev avatar

I don’t know. Once the courts rule he can be prosecuted, and the trial date is already set, I don’t know what other argument can be made to stall.

Anticorp ,

They don’t need a ruling to set a trial date. He isn’t the president anymore. He can be tried. The fact that they’re not is a symptom of a greater evil in our system.

Anticorp ,

Oh, you mean the court that trump himself stacked in favor of the GOP? The same court that has voted along party lines in like 98% of their rulings? Impartial my ass!

The immunity appeal that I’m referring to in #1 has 3 judges, none of which were appointed by Trump. (nbcnews.com/…/appeals-court-weighs-trumps-immunit…)

The case I’m referring to in #2 has a judge that was not appointed by Trump. (Tanya Chutkan)

Case #1 might eventually be considered by the Supreme Court though, and your criticism would apply there.

Also, Trump’s trial over mishandling classified documents is overseen by Judge Cannon, who Trump appointed, which is a sham. Cannon should have recused herself.

OurToothbrush , (edited )

Trying to prosecute him for his real crimes is honestly damaging the election chances of Biden, lots of voters with a vicarious persecution complex through Trump.

LillyPip ,

Haven’t you heard? He’s the second coming of Christ and his cross is the US legal system.

I really wish I was kidding.

dangblingus ,

You fucking jinxed it.

Anticorp ,

Yeah right. If he wins, he’s free. Shame on the justice department for not completing a single trial in FOUR FUCKING YEARS. Have they even started any of them? No way any of them are wrapped up before the election. The wheels of justice turn slowly. Yeah, yadda yadda yadda. They’re barely turning at all against this fat fucking loser.

Mirshe ,

His lawyers have run out pretty much every option to delay trials, although several judges have seemed pretty damn complicit as well. I get wanting to make sure the case is as airtight as possible, but…the people they’re worried about pissing off with a case that isn’t entirely formed, were just going to be pissed off anyway.

creamed_eels ,

Judge Cannon seems pretty ok to impede any progress she possibly can.

After decades of headlines like the one you just posted absolutely nothing has happened.

Trump is bulletproof and he knows it, and now, he doesn’t have to lie about how shitty his opponent in the race is.

Why are there two scroll wheels on one mouse? My mind can’t handle being this confounded

Potatisen ,

Yo, dawg. I heard you liked scrolling so we put a wheel behind your wheel so you can scroll while you scroll.

UprisingVoltage ,

Scroll wheel 2

tiredofsametab ,

I had a mouse where one was vertical and the other horizontal, but I seem to think the horizontal scroll was oriented horizontally. Having googled the mouse in the picture, it says one is programmable and suggests it starts with volume.

rubicon ,

Why wouldn’t there just be a small trackball on the nose, wouldn’t that be more practical?

Francois ,

Because you’d be constantly changing your volume up and down slightly while scrolling.

VindictiveJudge ,
@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

For navigating a great big thing that benefits from two axis scrolling? Yes. For literally anything else a scroll wheel might be used for, like swapping weapons in games? No. The clickyness of the average scroll wheel is actually pretty useful and can’t really be applied to a trackball.

pineapplelover ,

Tippon ,

I’ve got one of these for Photoshop. I’ve got the front wheel set up as normal, but the second wheel is set to change the brush size. It makes working much smoother, as I don’t have to use the keyboard.

    This mouse model was made decades ago for the time when would come the chosen one. The scroll master. He’s here to equilibrate the world with his scroll powers. Zoom in, zoom out. Volume up, volume down. Everything is possible, with, THE. DOUBLE. SCROLL. WHEEL.
