I think Graham is just a sleazy politician and knows it will give him more clout. Republicans who have taken a stand against Trump have mostly ended their careers; it’s been a surprising amount of courage from some individuals I didn’t think were capable.

Lindsey Graham doesn’t have brain worms, he is the brain worm.

Louisiana Supreme Court Makes It Harder For Church Abuse Survivors to Hold Priests Accountable (ballsandstrikes.org)

. . . Enter the Louisiana Supreme Court. In an opinion written by Justice James Genovese and published on March 22, the court found an absolute property right in the institutions’ right not to be sued. The Louisiana Child Victims Act, wrote Genovese, “cannot be retroactively applied to revive plaintiffs’ prescribed causes...

Everything we know as a civilization tells us that there should be no statute of limitations on child sexual abuse. This is embarrassing to me as a member of the human race.

Name and shame: Pro-Israel website ramps up attacks on pro-Palestinian student protesters (www.reuters.com)

Canary Mission is one of the oldest and most prominent of several digital advocacy groups that have intensified campaigns to expose Israel's critics since the war broke out, often leading to harassment such as Sayed experienced. The people behind the site have kept their identities, location and funding sources hidden....

Others have already talked about the potential benefits of matchmaking, but not a lot of people have talked about marriage as a joining of families. There are lots of cultures where it’s normative to live together with parents and grandparents (which if you think about it also means aunts and uncles, cousins, etc.). There are lots of benefits to people who live this way - greater financial stability, access to childcare, healthcare, increased lifespan, lower depression - and so it makes sense. If you are bringing someone new into the household, it may be important for the heads of the household to weigh on or even choose the person or the family.

Sacramento State’s updated policy states that it “does not have any direct investments in these areas” right now but, in accordance with students’ demands, its investment portfolios will “remain free of such direct investments.”

Students: We’re protesting until our school stops investing in stuff that’s bad!

University: Uh, we already don’t.

Students: We did it! We freed Palestine!

Attention seeking? It seems like this could have been a single student government vote.

The university’s communications office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from Jezebel on whether it is referring explicitly to Israel, or whether it regards Israel’s actions in Gaza as falling under the umbrella of “genocide, ethnic cleansing, and activities that violate fundamental human rights.”

And more effective, too.

@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Edit: Actually, just posting a list of the hundred + of schools that have changed official investment policy is not a fair response. The point is that it happens all the time, but it doesn’t grab headlines. SGAs work with university leaders to cooperatively effect change not only on a regular basis, but as an essential part of their functioning.

I’m happy to repost the list if you would like.

    It is still a show of good faith and progress. Egypt and Qatar would not put forward a deal that didn’t at least have a reasonable point of negotiation. So far this is the first I’ve heard about Hama’s making a serious ceasefire proposal.

    This is a revisionist view that requires ignoring a lot of historical facts. Almost a million Jews were expelled from MENA countries in the 20th century, many of whom survived only by escaping to Israel. The Palestinian Authoriry has never accepted any status for Jews. Christians, Muslims, Druze, yes, but no Jews.

    Meanwhile, there are about 2 million Arab citizens (mostly Muslim) of Israel who are entitled to equal rights, including government subsidized Churches and Mosques.

    How Counterprotesters at U.C.L.A. Provoked Violence, Unchecked for Hours - (NYT Gift Link) (www.nytimes.com)

    A New York Times examination of more than 100 videos from clashes at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that violence ebbed and flowed for nearly five hours, mostly with little or no police intervention. The violence had been instigated by dozens of people who are seen in videos counterprotesting the encampment....

    gedaliyah ,
    @gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

    It was always just propaganda to discredit the NYT, which is not only the paper of record for the nation, but also has a history of championing high journalistic ethics.

    That said, this behavior is heartbreaking and deplorable. It seems clear that this violence was initiated by people who stand opposed to terrorism and in solidarity for the return of hostages. This should never have happened and I hope that those who led this charge are brought to justice.

    gedaliyah ,
    @gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar
