I really like Black Mirror. I watched a bunch of TV shows, started and left midway through others, but I always go back to Black Mirror. Like the creator said, it’s sci-fi techno dystopia. And he is working on the 7th season. One of the episodes will be a follow up to USS Callister. Awesome!

Full screen rotate "the other way"?

Hey people. I have a bit of a niche situation. I use my phone with my left hand. When I hit the full screen button in YouTube or Jellyfin or any other app that can go full screen, the screen rotates to the right. So, if I rotate the phone the “natural way” for me, to the right, the image is upside down. Usually it only takes...

You can siphon gas with an empty bottle too, you no longer “need” a gas can. It holds a lot less gas, but would work in a pinch.

I tried playing a couple of times with others, it was not my thing… I personally prefer alone. I have a certain style, I like base building and hoarding, and I go for very long games, usually lasting months IRL. I put in more than 1000 hours over many years, and I never got bored of PZ :)

Pulp Fiction. Also, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. And Snatch. Also… aw man, there’s so many…

Same here. But with eBooks too. Sometimes my brain drifts for a while and I reread the same paragraph 5 times. So what I do is “double-dip”. I listen to and read the ebook at the same time. This way my brain has no chance of escaping. This has also helped me with my English; oh, so that’s how you pronounce albeit?

It works great for me. Not for my wife though, who is textbook ADHD. She reads slow, and if she matches the speed for the audiobook to her reading speed, it gets boring :) the wonders of neurodiversity :)

Headlamp tech that doesn’t blind oncoming drivers—where is it? (arstechnica.com)

Despite US dominance in so many different areas of technology, we’re sadly somewhat of a backwater when it comes to car headlamps. It’s been this way for many decades, a result of restrictive federal vehicle regulations that get updated rarely. The latest lights to try to work their way through red tape and onto the road are...

While my car was being repaired after a crash, the insurance company gave me a rental to use for the duration. The rental company only had a Land Rover Evoque (or something), and that car had the fancy led matrix lights. It was amazing! You could actually see the light being “shaped” on the road in front, going around incoming traffic, it was constantly moving. To me it was a bit distracting though…

That guide is great. Also, you can easily find some extra ram on eBay or Kleinanzeigen. I strongly recommend adding at least 4gb. Switching from a 1tb HDD to a 128-256gb SSD should also be pretty affordable and it will do wonders speed wise.

I have a 15yo kid with ASD. While she is highly functional, goes to a good public school, she can’t decide which trash bin to use and will just freeze for a while, overthinking it… She can talk for hours about the anatomy of a cat, but knows nothing about politics, or how the world functions… I think 16 is too young to vote, but my perspective is warped.

I never actually measured it, but I switched to fuzzel from wofi, and I can’t tell the difference in reaction time. To me it feels instant.

i use a minimal arch with the zen kernel and hyprland for home, work and play. no kde/gnome. for me it’s just right. except screen sharing in teams or discord, which haunts me… now it works, now it doesn’t.

beerclue ,

I use webcord and ferdium. But I also tried the official apps and even the web apps with Firefox, chromium or zen. Nope.

beerclue ,

Are You guys really pulling more than 40 images per hour? Isn’t the free one enough?

beerclue ,

I use docker at home and at work, nexus at work too. I really don’t understand… even a malfunctioning service should not pull the image over and over, there should be a cache… It could be some fringe case, but I have never experienced it.

beerclue ,

I don’t think it works with Apple, but I really like Streamrip. It works with Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer and SoundCloud. Just adding it to the list of recommendations.

I’m an arch user, and also have a small proxmox based homelab. I always have a live Ubuntu around, the latest desktop version available. Good for troubleshooting. Also, latest proxmox, opnsense, pfsense, debian.

Additionally, I have a small USB drive on my keychain with both USB C and USB A, where I keep some encrypted backups of important stuff, and I can access that from both my laptop and my phone.

Is Telegram, Ukraine’s most popular messenger app, a Russian Trojan horse? (kyivindependent.com)

In Ukraine, the charges against Durov reinvigorated the public debate about the security of Telegram. Some activists and officials have long sounded an alarm about the fact that while the country is surviving a full-scale invasion by Russia, its most popular messenger app and source of news is a platform founded and run by a...

The Iliad from the point of view of the gods while highlighting the interpretative power of the epic work to understand current events.

That sounds interesting, but I don’t think I would pause to read that… Maybe some Ruocchio…

Are these people using Internet Explorer?

😂🤣

<span style="color:#323232;">Looking at your repos, it seems like “fork” is your favorite term, since you’ve mastered the art of taking other people’s work and making it mildly less impressive. Setting up Keychron settings? Wow, groundbreaking stuff. Your “Rimworld mod” could hardly bluff its way to quality of life improvements if it tried. And a “pure Unix shell script”? Sounds like the most exciting way to put people to sleep since counting sheep.

And yet, they are hiring. Job openings popping up on LinkedIn… Who would apply?

beerclue ,

No one will say 3.658m. We would say about 3.5m or 3 and a half meters. I’m pretty sure those 12’ are not exact either. You wouldn’t say 11 feet, 5 and 1/32 inches, right?

Can subdomains using Cloudflare Tunnels be enumerated?

I’ve been using Cloudflare tunnels in my homelab. I’m wondering how well they resist subdomain discovery/enumeration by bots/malicious actors. I’m aware that security through obscurity isn’t a real strategy, but I am curious about this from a purely academic standpoint. Aside from brute force guessing, are there any...

I use wildcard certs. I don’t know if this completely fixes the issue, though.

I use Aegis, which I periodically back up manually off phone.

I used to work for a luxury brand in one of their “unnamed” locations in Eastern Europe. A pair of shoes would cost around 50€ to produce. We would then ship them to Italy, they would add the insole and laces, label them as “made in Italy” and sell them for 1k€+…

Yup, I have a domain I purchased and on my lan I use PiHole and Caddy. All my apps and services use the format app.mydomain.com. PiHole forwards all requests for *.mydomain.com to Caddy, which handles the LE certificate (via DNS challenge) and forwards the requests to the proper IP:PORT. I started using this for everything, my Proxmox hosts, printer, my APs…

I was reading through the comments here, and I went through OPs post history.

It feels a lot like a neurodivergent person, maybe Autism of some kind. The post / questions appear weird to others, but they feel genuine. I live in a very neurodivergent home, and I kinda get it.

Kids are like sponges, especially when it comes to languages.

We lived in Romania until a few years ago, when we moved to Germany. We speak Romanian at home, and they have a decent grasp. The oldest is fluent, with no accent, the youngest lacks vocabulary, applies German grammar rules and has a bit of German accent. All of them speak German fluently, and they use it when they talk to each other, with friends and at school. They are also fluent in English, and that is because of the media. I only use English when it comes to devices OS/interface, streaming services etc, and they are used to it. They consume YouTube, Netflix etc in English only.

They sometimes mix the languages, especially when talking to us, since their exposure to Romanian is limited.

beerclue ,

Same. Grew up watching Cartoon Network, HBO and the Discovery Channel with no subs (or dubs, they are not a thing in RO). Then there was music (lyrics) and later on video games and the Internet. It helped not having any OS or software available in my native language. Even to this day I use my phone and computer in English.

While I did have English classes at school (6th to 12th), the level was rather basic… I also took French for 10 years, and I can barely speak it. Otoh, I didn’t take one Italian class, but I can speak some, and understand almost everything. Again, this is because we had a bunch of Italian TV channels in the early 90s.

Is there a “light” version, without a WM? I run Hyprland on my current Arch setup.

Awesome!

I’ve never heard of Microsoft Launcher before… A lot of people seem to like Nova Launcher, I’ve used Lawnchair in the past, but nowadays I just don’t care anymore, I use the Pixel default. I try to use as little Google stuff as possible, but the launcher is hassle free.

I mean, I don’t like the guy, but how is he the one responsible? What about the ones that put a smartphone in the tribesmen’s hands?

beerclue ,

Will she get taxed for such a low income?

I guess you have a pretty regular sleep schedule… I don’t. I have issues sleeping, so sometimes I would go to bed at 2am and fall asleep at 4am, other days I would go to bed at midnight and fall asleep immediately. I sometimes wake up at 7am when I have to go to the office, sometimes at 9am, right before the morning meeting when I work from home. During the weekend I wake up between 10am and 2pm… I also frequently wake up during the night, I don’t have a very deep sleep. So being in bed for 6 hours might only mean 5h of sleep. I am a zombie when I wake up, so I would most likely forget to write/mark down the times. It’s just not feasible for everyone to do that manually.

To answer OP, I use my Fitbit to track my sleep. Before I got my watch, I used Sleep for Android.

beerclue ,

I mean, Blind mostly (only) plays Dwarf Fortress, which works awesomely on Linux. GG.

I don’t understand what this is about, but I admire the commitment, the story, the CGI. 7/10.
