How long would it take to create a Pyramid today?

Just a shower thought. Seeing how these structures took decades to build in their times, and that too entirely with manual labour, I was wondering how long these architectural marvels would take to be built in this post modern era with the help of our technological advancements....

themeatbridge ,

To make something that looks exactly like a pyramid, I imagine the easiest thing to do would be to fabricate large stone blocks and stack them the same way the pyramids were built. Cranes could make short work of the stacking, and if you’re willing to spend more, you could make the blocks out of lighter materials like fiberglass and foam. Even with natural stone, you could have multiple cranes and multiple crews to be done in like a month. Fabrication and delivery would also depend on the availability of the materials, so that might take another six weeks if you’re willing to spend the money.

If it were a standard construction project, you might budget for two years to create the drawings, get permits, bid out the job to contractors, prep the site, build the dang thing, and get final inspections. How much it would cost would also depend on materials selected and where it was built. Labor rates, land value, material costs, all of that varies by location and even the seasons.

Budget, Quality, Speed. These are the three corners of the universal priority triangle. If you want it fast and good, it’s going to cost a lot of money. Fast and cheap will be low quality. Good and cheap will take a long time (maybe forever).

The evidence isn’t even that strong, there i just aren’t that many people willing to risk becoming a pariah to dispute them.

If you are a Christian, there is no doubt Jesus existed. Any oblique reference to a rabbi who was persecuted hundreds years ago is considered evidence that Jesus existed. But no contemporaneous documentation exists.

If you’re not a Christian, debunking all of those vague references that might be proof of a Jewish leader named Jesus just isn’t particularly important, won’t persuade anyone who believes Jesus was(is) God, and will paint a target on your back for terrorists.

Fake elector case in Nevada dismissed over venue question, state attorney general vows appeal (apnews.com)

A Nevada judge dismissed an indictment Friday against six Republicans accused of submitting certificates to Congress falsely declaring Donald Trump the winner of the state’s 2020 presidential election, potentially cutting from four to three the number of states with criminal charges pending against so-called fake electors....

Amazon Mulls $5 to $10 monthly price tag for unprofitable Alexa service, AI revamp (www.reuters.com)

Amazon (AMZN.O) is planning a major revamp of its decade-old money-losing Alexa service to include a conversational generative AI with two tiers of service and has considered a monthly fee of around $5 to access the superior version, according to people with direct knowledge of the company’s plans.

themeatbridge ,

Alexa was never supposed to make money by itself. It was supposed to do two things, collect information and lower the barrier to buying things.

They must have either collected enough data to lower the value of collecting any more, or they have realized that people got over the novelty of asking Alexa to order more dog food.

My guess is the latter, because buying anything from Amazon now requires 15 minutes of research to make sure it’s actually what you want and not at some ridiculous marked up price. I wouldn’t trust Alexa to pick the best result on the first try.

themeatbridge ,

You’re right, but the reason that hasn’t caught on is that talking to your “smart” house is stupid. You can’t possibly program every possible command or situation, and telling Alexa to dim the lights in your kitchen to 40% is slower than using a dimmer switch. Actual smart homes are automated to the point where you don’t need to talk to your room.

This is Chewbacca Defense-level nonsense. I don’t even know where to begin.

We could make an object that is exactly pi meters long. Make a circle of 1 meter in diameter, and then straighten it out. We would not be able to measure the length more accurately than we can calculate it (that might be the largest understatement ever) but to the tolerance with which we could make a 1 meter diameter circle, you should have the same tolerance to the circumference being pi.

themeatbridge ,

Right, by my point is that your accuracy and precision are the same whether you are making a 1 meter length object or a π meter length object. Your meter stick is not accurate to the width of a hydrogen atom, either.

But if we accept the precision of our manufacturing capabilities as “close enough,” then it is equally as close to exactly π as it is to exactly 1.

In other words, to say we cannot make an object that is π meters is to say we cannot make an object that is any specific length.

themeatbridge ,

I believe you’re mistaken. A Planck length is the minimum length we can extrapolate down before physics gets weird, but that doesn’t mean it is the smallest possible length anything can be.

And an irrational number does exist as a discrete unit, it simply cannot be described as a fraction. Case in point, if you could create a spherical particle that was exactly 1 Planck length across, it would have a circumference of exactly π Planck lengths.

By your logic, such a theoretical particle could not exist because the circumference includes an irrational number in the size of the body.

themeatbridge ,

But you could make that same argument for a lot of fractions. 1/3 doesn’t exist because you cannot divide a quantum in three. 0.333 repeating means that eventually you have to divide an indivisible foundational particle in thirds.

themeatbridge ,

But if I don’t have three particles, 1/3 requires division.

Netanyahu wants Trump to win. Let’s just all keep that in mind.

At first, I was like “How the fuck is the court gettinginvolved in a veto?” but then I read the rest and it makes perfect sense. That’s not how vetoes work. Otherwise, you’d have governors being like “This bill provides funding for some boring ass normal shit that everyone agrees, including the dumbass Governor preserves historical sites, also is in the best interest of the governed, and represents the will of all citizens.”

I’m not sure why the rush, though. They have several hundred years to go through the courts in normal fashion.

My favorite bit of 80s trivia is that when Run-DMC asked Steven Tyler for the lyrics, he didn’t know them. He had been performing the song live, and would just kind of ramble and mumble through a lot of it, and so he had to go back and listen to the song to try to remember the original lyrics to write them down. Tyler wasn’t 100% sure what he was saying on the recording, and wrote down his best guess.

This was all on his way to the studio to record the song.

Also, when Perry wanted to re-record the bassline for the cover, they realized the studio didn’t have a bass guitar. Tyler and Perry had been brought in to re-record their singing, but the rest of the band was not going to re-record the music. MCA of the Beastie Boys happened to be hanging around the studio, and ran home to get his bass for Perry to use on the recording.

Because God, to be the absolute creator and the prime mover, He must occupy an absolute space.

Newton had described a universe where, when you push a ball, the ball pushes back. Each action, each motion, is relative to another. This implies that, for God to create the first motion, like rolling the Universe across the room, the Universe would have pushed back and moved God.

Newton didn’t believe this, and rejected the argument that his theories disproved God. But there is a reason we remember his laws of physics and forget the theological arguments. His work in physics held up to scrutiny for hundreds of years. He was accurately (enough) describing the motion of the world around him. His religious beliefs were based on the same philosophical musings and wishful thinking as every other theologian.

themeatbridge ,

Yes, the history of science is refuting claims about God or gods. What is left is the untestable vagueness of the God of the Gaps.

themeatbridge ,

Yeah, it’s a unfortunate framing, but in the context of the interview, Dolly was discussing generally her support for the LGBTQ+ community. She eventually comes back around to a live-and-let-live philosophy, but her comparison belies a troubling foundational belief system.

themeatbridge ,

That’s not an apology.

themeatbridge ,

The word “data” was on the second line of the headline, and I missed it on the first pass. I was like “Why is that shocking?”

themeatbridge ,

Rounding out the bottom 5 was Iowa and Louisiana at –15%.

Giggity.

themeatbridge ,

Dude got paid to help rich people rape poor people, and he made so much money he could afford to buy an island.

Every account of every job he ever had was that he was unqualified and corrupt, and that he was “friends” with someone in a high enough place to protect him. It’s very likely that he was a pimp his entire career and that every job he failed to do well can be explained as a cover for his real role.

themeatbridge ,

Sure, but if you have the option, you shouldn’t choose it. One reason so many businesses use Windows is that everyone knows Windows. If everyone learns Linux, more companies will use Linux.

themeatbridge ,

True, but more applications are supporting Linux as it becomes more popular. More users means more Linux apps means more users.

Trying to remember an old Spider-Man game I played as a child... anyone can recognize it?

Hey folks, I’ve lurked on this community for a while now but haven’t really posted anything until today. Sorry if this isn’t really the right place to ask questions like this, but since this is a place for old games, I felt it’d be the most appropriate one…...

themeatbridge ,

From that time period, it was probably one of the Spider-Man games that tied in with the Raimi movies. It would have had Bruce Campbell narrating the tutorial levels, if that helps jog your memory.

The first one had a tutorial level in a wrestling match, but the second one sounds more similar to what you described. Unfortunately, if you were playing Spider-Man 2 on a Windows PC, it means you were playing the worst possible version of a great game. The Playstation version was far superior in performance, controls, graphics, and well just about every other way. The Windows version (you can’t even call it a port, because it was an entirely different game) was developed by Fizz Factor. If you tried to play the game today, I would strongly recommend the Treyarch version on an emulator, but it might not have the nostalgia factor.

themeatbridge ,

Right? I already don’t use youtube as much as possible. Piped helps, but if that stops working, I just won’t watch movies on youtube.

I understand why people are upset anytime a company fucks their customers for money, but the solution is always to walk away.

“The more people know about me, the less they like me! It’s not fair!!”

themeatbridge ,

Republicans already established that contempt of congress isn’t a thing you need to worry about.

themeatbridge ,

Kinda sounds like the Oklahoma Supreme Court is a public nuisance, and they’re saying the best way to get what you want is with violence. I disagree, but I’m not on the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

themeatbridge ,

Username checks out.

While you’re here, can I as you a favor? Talk to your people. Those fuckers have been up to some bullshit.

themeatbridge ,

Nobody ought to be surprised. Trump was publicly good friends with Epstein.

“I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy,” Trump booms from a speakerphone. “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”

themeatbridge ,

Worth mentioning that Southern Baptists and American Baptists are about as similar as Grape Jelly and KY Jelly.

themeatbridge ,

Counterpoint, no rights are absolute. There are conditions and restrictions on every “fundamental constitutional right.” Freedom of speech does not include slander or inciting violence. Freedom of religion does not protect abuse or acts of violence. Freedom to bear arms does not include weapons of war or negligent behavior.

Addiction is a medical condition, and should not be treated by criminal courts. On the other hand, addiction does undermine an individual’s rational thinking. Should addicts be permitted to carry firearms? I don’t think that is an unreasonable restriction.

The problem with my argument is that I don’t think our restrictions on gun ownership go nearly far enough. Addiction is a problem, but it’s not the most pressing problem we have related to gun violence.

themeatbridge ,

I use this sometimes, but OP bolded multiple lines of text, which ruins the effect.

themeatbridge ,

Maybe “produce” isn’t the right word, but I was thinking of these lozenges that made headlines a few years ago.

themeatbridge ,

Sure. Dwarf Wheat is a great example of humans creating a plant to survive in specific environmental conditions with massive benefits. Or we could look at introduced species, like the cane toad, which are too good at surviving their new environments.

We don’t (yet) have the biological capability to “design” an entire species from the ground up, but if we did, I’m certain our first attempt would be a collosal failure that could potentially wipe out humanity. But that’s just based on how good we are at ignoring warning signs.

themeatbridge ,

then I’ve already lost the right to vote

You have accurately described the situation.

You do not have full freedom to choose any candidate you like. You can only choose Trump or Biden. A vote for anyone else will not have any effect. You’re free to vote for nobody, or not vote, but anybody who survived the first Trump presidency and isn’t willing to vote against him is either a racist or a moron.

themeatbridge ,

So you’re claiming you aren’t a moron?

themeatbridge ,

The fact that you think “intentionally ugly” and “diversity” are the same thing is just a staggering new form of ignorant intolerance. I’m going to need a minute to digest that.

Ok, so many question…

Is it that you only play as characters you want to fuck? Or you only play as characters that look like you? Or is it both, and you only want to fuck people who look like you, and want to play games where that’s part of it?

How ugly do you need to be to no longer be normal? Or is it being different from you that makes people ugly?

Are all ugly people minorities in your mind? Like you see someone on the street with crooked teeth and a mishapen head, and you think “Your kind aren’t welcome here!” Or are there certain minorities that are ugly to you, and you think this character model looks like one of “them”? Which group is even represented in this trailer?

I’m really curious about you. I’d really rather not be, and I’d probably be happier if I just forget you exist. You’re like a really weird shaped piece of dog shit. How were you formed? What the fuck was wrong with that dog?

I know you probably won’t give me answers, and will probably just fall back on some tired cliche of an insult again. But on the off chance that you feel like sharing, I’d love to know more.

themeatbridge ,

Yeah, I definitely get it. It would be illegal to mix low and line voltage in the USA, too.

I ended up running the cabling myself, all class two circuits powering 12 24vdc spots. The nice bit is that they are all addressable RGBW spots, so I can control them all individually or as groups. And it’s all automated. The downside is that I’ll probably have to remove them if we ever sell this house, because nobody but me understands how it works.

themeatbridge ,

I used to work for a European home automation company. Thing is, their gear is most cost effective in new construction and was very popular in Germany, Austria, Czechia, and Poland, but convincing anyone to wire for low voltage devices in the UK or US was like asking for ketchup on pancakes. There are a lot of reasons to like their tech, but they don’t really do retrofit, so it hasn’tanaged to make a dent in the market.
