Or Autoland or a HUD landing which both can go down to 0/0, conditions permitting. There’s a lot of tools these days that pilots (especially Air Transport Pilots) can use to fly. And yes, all of it requires fairly extensive training.

HiddenLayer5 OP ,

After watching Mentour Pilot I have an appreciation of just how much training they undergo. It’s basically the closest thing we have to a real Starship Enterprise type setting where the captain seems to have an answer to everything that comes up, because that’s precisely what they aim for.

KingZog ,

I love Mentour Pilot! I’m sad I live in the US and may never have him as a pilot. It’s comforting knowing all the extensive training they go through and how many checklists and systems there are to avoid disasters.

teft ,
@teft@startrek.website avatar

And yes, all of it requires fairly extensive training.

Pffft I’ve played Flappy Bird. How hard can it be?

Zippy ,

Very few airports are rated for it. Hong Kong is the only one that I know off hand. Mainly because they have so much fog and not great alternatives that they allow it. Very few planes keep up that certification either unless they commonly land in those situations.

That being said, in a crunch, the majority of modern aircraft could likely do it if there was no other choice. Might result in a hard landing and damage but would be survivable.

Zippy ,

I actually have my private pilots licence. Had bought a Piper arrow that was IFR rated. I am not rate IFR but my instructor was.

Flew one flight to a small airport during real IFR conditions with my instructor. Uses GPS for localizer and glideslope. This particular airport minimum was 200 feet. That means if you don’t see the runway by 200, you abort. Anyhow the cloud layer was started at 5000 right down to 300 feet. Was beautiful day with zero turbulence. When we entered the clouds, it literally felt like you were not moving and just in a heavy fog. Your engine is even decreased and quiet as you are descending. You watch the instruments like a hawk because it is easy to lose spacial orientation and death comes shortly after that. The only really movement is watching your attitude decrease which is very eerie. Being we were flying into an unmanned airport, for all you know the clouds go right into the ground so watching for the abort attitude is critical. In this case the cloud layer was particularly low at 300 feet. We broke thru the clouds with 100 feet to spare before abort attitude. Literally about three seconds later we were starting the flare and landing.

You literally rely on your instruments 100 percent and hope that altitude indicator is right on. You have a minimum of two attitude indicators. If they were both to fail in real IFR conditions, conditions where you can’t see the horizon, very few pilots will survive. You can’t feel the horizon at all. There is no way to tell if you are level.On the ultimate failure, you can use slew, altitude, turn indicator, worried to try and fly out of the condition. But few pilots could successfully do that for any extend time.

lunaticneko ,

In my country our flag carrier does it because they usually arrive too early and have to circle around which for some reason caused bad reviews.

So they just turned the damn thing off, which makes things worse IMO. This happens with both ouTGoing and incoming flights, unfortunately.

Lopoloma ,

I imagine if the slightest thing seemingly goes wrong it could have a snowball effect.
People rushing in panic in any direction out of fear or curiosity.
Landing a plane that size is hard enough but with all the mass tumbling around makes it even more unpredictable.
The seatbelts aren’t for your safety allone, they also keep your mass in place so the plane doesn’t react unpredictably.
Also a big plus if during the turbulences you’re not getting flailed by the whirling around extremities of a beltless corpse or getting crushed by its torso.
Remember, force equals mass times speed and there can be a lot of accelerstion during turbulences.

Zippy ,

Possibly. I do recall a commercial aircraft crashing when a bunch of people ran to the back of the aircraft because an alligator got loose. Something to that effect anyhow. Pretty sure was in Africa. Can’t find a source for that.

Sealioning is the constant bad faith, feigning ignorance, asking for evidence of everything under the guise of “just asking questions”. Then ignoring any evidence presented and moving on to the next demand. Used to shut down discourse entirely.

Tankies are leftists that defend or deny the atrocities committed by authoritarian communist regimes like the Soviet Union or the CCP. It was first used to describe communists in Great Britain that defended the Soviet Union for using tanks to crush anti-communist revolutions.

He’s not saying they’re right wing governments, just that they’re highly authoritarian, which is something that leftists, on average, tend to be against, so if someone claims to be “left” but supports Russia, they likely have a poor understanding of one of those things.

@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

This is a major example of why I despise the left/right "spectrum" that is so universal in political discourse these days. These views are not simple enough to be defined along a one-dimensional axis like this.

I'm increasingly fond of the 8 values test, which splits things up along four distinct axes. Still too few, but definitely far better than just one.

Aatube ,

Like @shit (from shitjustworks, nice one) said, these don’t conflict. ArcaneSlime ,

Idk if I like this “left means anti authoritarian” thing I’ve seen floating around recently. By that interpretation right wing individualist anarchism is actually left wing, because though it is called right wing in the traditional sense of individualism v collectivism where collectivism is left wing, it is certainly against authority.

Rather, I’m fine with this interpretation, but can we all get together and figure out whether or not “left” means “anarchism” or “collectivism?” This “it means either one of the two and people will just decide one is correct and deny the existence of the other definition and which one that is depends on who you’re talking to at that moment, and I won’t define it when askef, I’ll just act like you’re stupid for not knowing which one I choose to use today” shit is getting old and I’m like 99% sure it’s intentional as a technique to appear to win an argument without having any argument to speak of.

refefer , to fediverse in What should we do about Threads?

Meh, federated or defederated, threads poses only the first challenge to the fediverse. There will be other players with their own incentives that will join via ActivityPub, add their own custom features incompatible with the broader world, and entice users with slicker interfaces. Fediverse will need to show it can weather it, especially hard with the network effects of the larger corporations’ user bases.

My hope is the pressure will keep open services innovating to better compete and result in a richer experience for everyone.

misterhuh ,

That’s an excellent take on the platform.

Best thing that could happen is that reddit would respond with a surprise “we too” will federate with you all, and implement activity pub. Then you have two big actors competing on an open playground. And we grab a drink and enjoy the light show.

Bushwhack ,

Honestly, the reason I left Reddit was the 3rd party api bullshit. If they suddenly federated and I could use Lemmy to subscribe to some of their communities / subs again without needing to be subjected to their bullshit ads and 1st party client bullshit, I’d welcome that.

carbotect ,

I mean Tumblr also wants to join the fediverse. They are smaller than Twitter, but still large to have some amount of influence.

reclipse ,
@reclipse@lemdro.id avatar

Excellent take.

Bushwhack ,

Competition drives innovation. If something from a walled garden fediverse comes to the broader world as a result, awesome. I mean, if we could federate with Reddit for example, and I could access their subs content but not be subjected to their 1st party app and ads and karma and that’s the stuff on top of their instance, I don’t care what they do on their server.

If anything it may introduce people as a gateway into the fediverse to begin with so when something happens on a corporate instance that pisses them off, they might feel compelled to look into the broader world around them. Not all, but some.

I guess the only big concern most people have here is the Microsoft EEE.

hedgehogging_the_bed ,

DO are real doctors. Rarer than MDs because there are less schools but totally real docs. My Mom with 30 years nursing experience says their training is basically identical, but DOs are generally nicer.

rand_alpha19 ,

Osteopaths (who have a Doctorate of Osteopathy and are often referred to as DOs) go to medical school and receive training that's almost exactly the same as an MD.

EleventhHour ,
@EleventhHour@lemmy.world avatar

the difference (so i’m told) is that DOs are trained to take a more holistic, full-body approach to diagnostics and treatment rather than only focusing on one set of symptoms/treatment. They also do their residencies and internships alongside MDs.

rand_alpha19 ,

Yes, I've heard some people say that they trust DOs more because they're more deliberately trained to look at a larger picture of a person's health. I don't have my own opinion since I've never met with a DO.

EtherWhack ,
@EtherWhack@lemmy.world avatar

My PCP is a DO. It works for me as my body is still relatively young. (late 30’s) I also don’t have many issues that would require more intensive/specialized treatment that I don’t already have a specialist for.

evasive_chimpanzee ,

It depends on the country. Everywhere but the US, I believe, osteopaths are witch doctors on the same level as chiropractors. In the US, they were originally like that, but their professional organization basically pushed it into being a real medical degree.

Now they go to the same length schooling as MD’s, and take the same exams as far as I know.

The core of the whole discipline, osteopathy, is a pseudoscience, though. While they are usually competent doctors they still have that core of pseudoscience. They like to market themselves as more “holistic”, but that’s usually a good dogwhistle term to let you know information not supported by science is going to follow. They bring up that they are the same as MDs, but with additional training in osteopathy, but that can’t be true because the schooling is the same length, so to fit in the pseudoscience, they get less science.

The real reason why we have DO’s is that we don’t have capacity in our country to educate enough MDs, so we have this weird parallel system.

Fosheze ,

Be careful with vitamin D though. That is one of the very very few vitamins that you can actually take too much of because it’s fat soluble, not water soluble, so excessive vitamin D will build up in your fat cells rather than just getting peed out. It’s called vitamin D toxicity (VDT) and it can have some unpleasant neurological effects among other things.

So it’s probably a good idea to get your levels checked anyways just to make sure you’re taking the right amount if you need it.

I can somewhat understand this. I have IBS, and most people with a bowel issue will tell you that IBS is basically your doctor saying ¯\(ツ)/¯

Instead of getting help from your doctor, you go online and you hear about people finding relief through taking weird supplements, or eating only rice, or taking pre and probiotics of varying types. None of it has any proof, but it’s better to try something than to struggle - and sometimes you’re lucky or you find some short-lived relief.

The difference is that there often isn’t evidence for these things working, whereas there is plenty of evidence out there that says that chiropractors are doing legitimately dangerous practices to your body. The difference is that someone is trying to make a profit from this lack of knowledge.

NigelFrobisher ,

I’ve had loads of advice like that for IBS, but no amount of FODMAP or probiotics actually makes a difference, because my IBS is stress-triggered. My doctor helped by advising me to avoid stressful situations, which is hard when you move to another country.

“Only rice” is an elimination diet for allergies that I should have tried decades ago, but dumbass mainstream medicine never recommended.

I found out there are slow allergies mediated by immunoglobulin G that you can’t detect while eating, so I did a blood test. Found some strong positives (milks, eggs), and then through elimination found out false negatives that I also can’t eat (peanut, soy), and, thanks to the doctor whom I went out of my way to see about IgG, some that are typically harmful to those with IBS that I also need to avoid (gluten, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil). Supplemental protective agents Aloe barbadensis, xyloglucan, and butyrate also help. Getting really healthy now - no more IBS if I don’t eat mistakes.

The mainstream doctors say that’s all nonsense and that I’m a hypochondriac who perceives having gotten better for no reason.

My previous successful departure from the mainstream was making my gallbladder go from “full of stones” to “empty except a thin layer of sediment on the bottom” as seen by ultrasound. Now that there’s proof, the doctors can’t dismiss that. www.quora.com/…/107344862

Not OP, but as someone using Ubuntu LTS releases on several systems, I can answer my reason: Having the latest & greatest release of all software available is neat, but sometimes the stability of knowing "nothing on my system changes in any significant way until I ask it to upgrade to the next LTS" is just more valuable.

My primary example is my work laptop: I use a fairly fixed set of tools and for the few places where I need up-to-date ones I can install them manually (they are often proprietary and/or not-quite established tools that aren't available in most distros anyway).

A similar situation exists on my primary homelab server: it's running Debian because all the "services" are running in docker containers anyway, so the primary job of the OS is to do its job and stay out of my way. Upgrading various system components at essentially random times runs counter to that goal.

IonAddis , to asklemmy in What was a profound moment that a video game caused you to experience, and why?
@IonAddis@lemmy.world avatar

This was a smaller moment, but similar to yours, OP, in that it revealed some unconscious thinking in my head.

But I was playing Crusader Kings II quite a few years back. And I basically had a King with the Genius trait and some other stuff I could pass down to his kids. I think I had somehow lucked into the Byzantine Empire or something, so I was basically seducing and inviting a bunch of lovers with other traits from all around the world (north and south, east and west) so I could spread Genius around. I wanted a smart council full of my bastards, heh.

So my genius slut-king has a bunch of kids. I’m naming them after my absolute favorite characters from books and such, because they’re part of my family and dynasty–so I’m giving them names that have a lot of personal “worth” to me.

Then I get to the kid in my dynasty who isn’t white, and I couldn’t figure out what name to give her. I had all these awesome names that I was using over and over through the generations in my dynasty, but somehow none that felt “right” for her. I tried and tried to choose a name, and none “fit”.

And after a while, it suddenly hit me in the face how SUBTLE racism can be. This was just a video game, but I had something that was “high worth” to me to give out, these favorite character names, and I was handing them out like candy until I got to the one kid and struggled, making all sorts of excuses why this not-white video game kid couldn’t get the name of this other character I really liked.

Now, if I was doing that in a frickin’ video game, imagine what people are doing with REAL LIFE things that are “high worth” to them. Hiring at jobs, giving gifts and presents, selling a house, etc.

And it wasn’t like I was going around in the game consciously picking which kids to screw over. (I mean, moreso than you usually do in Crusader Kings, the game where people glitch themselves into marrying their horses and creating witch covens with devil-babies so they can spread satanism across the world.) I ended up screwing this virtual kid over because I was going on this “gut feeling” that my really cool favorite-character names just somehow “weren’t right” for her, even though that frickin’ inbred cousin over there with a family tree like a wreath was proudly wearing it already.

So yeah. Learned a big lesson on how internal gut feelings influence you to do racist shit really subtly sometimes.

I’m sitting here thinking you were going to end it with saying you treated that person with the respect they deserved by not wantonly giving them some bogus high fantasy white name.

There’s a reason why so many black people give their children uniquely non-Anglo names. There is nothing new about it, and you’re right, it probably wouldn’t fit. Because most white names are distinctly non-black lol. Even moreso most uniquely white names are distinct in the same way that uniquely black names are.

Understanding that all people hold intrinsic biases is essential, but acknowledging cultural differences isn’t racism lol.

Weird Al Yankovic is… really just an all around awesome person and probably won’t show up anywhere on this thread.

weird al’s toxic trait is that he lost on jeopardy and hates bernie (he just wanted to see the twine ball!)

nicolairathjen ,

Cool answer, but ignores the question, no?

xmunk ,

I wanted to inject a bit of wholesome into a question that will be littered with pedos, murderers and white supremacists. In the modern world it’s way too easy to focus on the negative and forget that some people actually do live up to your expectations.

I didn’t just want to troll with an off-topic response but make sure there was a glimmer of hope.

luthis OP ,

Well, I was glad to read your contribution!

InputZero ,

I dunno, him and Coolio had some beef in the 90s. When Weird Al parodied Coolio’s Gangsters Paradise with his Amish Paradise Weird Al didn’t do so with the consent of Coolio. Gangsters paradise was a deeply personal song to Coolio so he was understandably upset. As a direct parody it was protected under fair use but Weird Al didn’t feel right about it. So he reached out to Coolio, apologized and ever since then Weird Al has gotten the artist approval to parody their work despite the fact he doesn’t need to. Coolio did eventually come around and agree it was a pretty funny parody. Plot twist, (not really) that’s how humble Weird Al is, he didn’t do anything legally wrong and yet he still recognized he could do better.

Nollij ,

That was all from a miscommunication- Al had his people reach out to Coolio’s people, and somehow wires got crossed. Al created it with the belief that he had Coolio’s blessing. Al has always asked permission, and a number of artists/songs have not been done because they would not grant permission. Examples include Paul McCartney (Live and Let Die/Chicken Pot Pie, because of his strict vegetarianism), Michael Jackson (Black or White, because he felt the message was too important), and everything by Prince.

While it’s never been tested in court, most of these parodies probably count as derivative works (i.e. permission is required) rather than protected fair use. A notable exception might be Smells Like Nirvana, since it was used to mock the original creator.

Edit: spelling

mysoulishome ,
@mysoulishome@lemmy.world avatar

Al assumed that since Coolio’s people gave 100% approval they had cleared it with Coolio so it’s really on Coolio’s management…but Al being such a stand up human being felt bad as he wants artists to emotionally be ok with their art being used. I also suspected at the time Coolio manufactured a little outrage thinking he was being laughed at…wanting to seem tough. Although beefing with Weird Al is not very gangster lol.

I’ve always felt sad that Coolio didn’t appreciate (early on) how amazing the Amish Paradise phenomenon was, it kind of made him and his song even more immortal…and his life has always seemed kind of sad. Plagued by health issues, mental health problems, family and legal trouble, financial struggles, criminal involvement. He did keep making some music and touring, had 10 kids, was on some TV shows. Ran for President with a porn star. But he has never seemed like he was happy or enjoyed success. When he died of an overdose he was alone…like OD’s always are. They cremated him and didn’t even have a funeral. 10 children and none of them said no, we have to have a funeral for dad…? As a father that is devastating.

TheWeirdestCunt , to asklemmy in What's a current or growing trend only you seem to have concerns about?

I just moved into a new student dorm today and every single thing is done by a different app run by a different company and the “help desk” only say “use the app” whenever you have an issue. Only problem is I can barely even download the thing because the wifi is broken and I can’t report that I can’t connect to it because I can’t download the app to report it.

RozhkiNozhki ,
@RozhkiNozhki@lemmy.world avatar

On that note I am noticing with growing concern the big push to transition to and rely on technology that is nowhere close to the level of reliability that is being presented. I am not a Luddite in any way but pushing apps everywhere with little regard for functionality and privacy, as well as endless “do you have an app for this?” questions are unnerving. Same with AI.

Susaga ,
@Susaga@ttrpg.network avatar

I recently got on a plane that insisted I download an app to use as my boarding pass, rather than just give me a boarding pass. It was a transfer, and the second flight used a boarding pass. Significantly easier. But I guess the app lets them gather data on me or something.

Matomo ,

I like the contrast with this comment about how web is starting to do too much. I agree with both sentiments, so it would be great to find the golden mean.

acastcandream ,

I’m somebody who likes to take care of things himself, especially if an app can handle it, but ultimately I want there to be a clear way to get a person for when things just aren’t working. I feel like so many companies work so hard to make sure I never talk to a person ever.

It’s a stupid term that is based on an antiquated mindset where Asian people are not creative and cannot invent anything of substance; we are only able to poorly imitate what the West develops. It needs to die.

Also, I’ve been using and customizing the X Window-based desktop for 25 years and I’m not sure that the term “ricing” was ever used anywhere before Reddit and even then only within the past decade or so. Let it die with that culture.

roguetrick ,

Now they need to just find an Asian person saying it's not a big deal so they can dismiss your comment.

xXthrowawayXx ,

I’m with you especially on that last part. My most insane privately racist lug-mate called it modding or customization. Even in the windows shell hacking scene no one described it like that.

I do like using “tuning” though, fond memories of import tuner magazine and my dearly departed first car and first computer.

The term at least since the 90s means to modify stuff to your heart’s content and literally creating something new, unique and personal.

Idk where you went to get that “can’t invent anything of substance” thing, but you might want to check your internalized racism.

squaresinger , to asklemmy in What's a scam that's so normalized that we don't even realize it's a scam anymore?

Unpaid overtime.

Framing “fulfilling your contract” as “silent quitting”.

In what other context would be “delivering what’s in the contract” anything less than satisfactory?

When I buy a litre of milk and the box contains exactly a litre of milk it isn’t “silent stealing” either.

MJBrune ,

Unpaid overtime is usually illegal too. Highly depends on your position though. A lot of software engineers are marked as exempt when they shouldn’t be.

squaresinger ,

The annoying thing is, depending on your job and financial situation, it hardly matters whether it’s illegal or not. I’m not talking about my comfortable situation as a software engineer, but rather people working crap jobs and not having alternatives.

If you know, you’ll be out of work for longer if you get fired, you basically cannot report any illegal stuff your employer is doing.

Hazzia , (edited )

I used to work for IBM’s CIC (colloquially known as the “cheap labor division”) and starting pay for a junior dev was only 30k/year. If you got assigned to a contract, you were told that you had to work 44 hours/week exempt, regardless of if you had work to do or not, and everyone knew it’s so they could charge the project more without actually paying the devs any extra. Needless to say I got out ASAP and have 0 intention of working for them again, in any capacity.

And they wondered why everyone kept jumping ship right after getting those nice required onboarding certs onto their resumes…

jsveiga , to asklemmy in What's some really unpopular opinion you have?

Dogs were hardwired by selective breeding to worship their owners. Not long ago they at least were loyal companions. You got one off the streets, fed it leftovers, washed it with a hose, it lived in the yard, and it was VERY happy and proud of doing its job. Some breeds now were bred into painful disabling deformities just to look “cute”, and they became hysterical neurotic yapping fashion accessories. Useless high maintenance toys people store in small cages (“oh, but my child loves his cage”) when they don’t need hardwired unconditional lopsided “love” to feed their narcissism.

fubo ,

Lapdogs have been around for thousands of years. It’s only very recently that they’ve been bred so extremely that they can’t breathe.

jsveiga ,

Thousands of years ago they were dogs, not fashion accessories.

fubo ,

Yes, I’m pretty sure they were still dogs. No crippling deformities.

(edit: but if you need to filter “anecdotal” evidence, just add “in the western world, in modern history”?)

And it’s being reversed. Pugs are going back to being bread with longer nose features.

    How is this unpopular?

    jsveiga ,

    Haha, I guess many dog owners just can’t see it how it is; probably an addiction to the lopsided unconditional “love”. I used to comment something similar back in Reddit, just to see the flood of downvotes and outraged dog owners.

    Same reaction to supporting the idea that some breeds are generally more dangerous and/or more aggressive. “Oh, my MY pitbull is a sweetie!!” (adding this here just to test :D )

    Jenntron ,
    @Jenntron@lemmy.world avatar

    I think people are stupid about pets in general, just like they’re stupid about everything else. There are plenty of people who could make a good home for almost any animal, even a pitbull. There’s no “one size fits all” when it comes to pet ownership.

    I agree with you about how awful it is to use these dogs as fashion accessories and put them in crates. I also think it’s because a lot of people desire the “lopsided love”. It definitely feeds their egos and a lot of them are narcissists, don’t know any better because they’re stupid or both.

    Animals should only be in cages temporarily for the right reasons. I hate when people claim that their dogs love their cages. They don’t love them. They are just trained and conditioned to tolerate them. Most dogs do want to please their owners and it’s very convenient for these assholes to believe their dogs love being in their cages for hours on end.

    socsa ,

    I do agree that the caging trend is fucking awful. I have friends who leave their two large dogs caged for 8 hours a day and it crushes me. These are both well behaved dogs who wouldn’t make a mess out of a cage so I really just don’t get the point, other than it’s millennial meta to do cage training.

    jsveiga ,

    Yes, and I heard as a response “but he LOVES the cage”. Really? Why does it need a door with a latch then?

    Username2345 ,

    Modern dogs shouldn’t exist and all breeds sould be put down for the good of nature

    djdadi ,

    The “cage” thing is weird, because it seems like it is used by the worst/laziest dog owners, and by good dog owners / trainers (with very different reasoning). The average dog owner seems to not even use “cages” much.

    Anyway, crate training is very much worth it, but it takes a significant effort
