“I’m fine.”

The problem is I keep repeating the same lie.

luthis ,

Lutris can be pretty handy for many things…

I don’t have too much exp with these things, but I would suggest (as an IT support person) narrowing down and isolating problems into specifics, like:

  • I need dot.net for x thing and I tried y thing and it didn’t work.

You’ll be able to get better answers. I’m pretty interested in the suggestions, my usual solution is ‘find something open source that is not as good but works.’

There should be a way to give directly to the developers

I realize that, after all this time, I have never payed for my all-time favorite games I grew up playing (Fallout 3 & Skyrim). I can pay for it, but I really do not want to pay the money to the Bethesda’s marketing team, CEO, and whoever bullshit middle man who wants a cut of that. I want to give directly to the team that made...

luthis ,

There should be an app or something for this…

www.travelsafe-abroad.com/somalia/

Pretty easy to find really…

You’re over-reacting. It’s probably only death at worst. Most likely 40 years.

luthis ,

Hard question because I watch so much horror…

Ex Machina

luthis , (edited )

Her maker imprisoned and tortured all of his creations.

I don’t recall entirely but I’m pretty sure it didn’t know that. Also, I don’t think you can ‘torture’ or ‘imprison’ computers.

She couldn’t trust the kid, he lied to her about there being no other machines

So, death is justifiable then?

It’s an AI, and it was pretty clearly demonstrated at the end that it felt no remorse or compassion for the dude. It was very very good at manipulating the humans and achieving it’s goal at any cost, so… I completely disagree. Evil wins because living, feeling human beings suffered due to the actions of a sexy computer.

luthis ,

Good point.

luthis ,

The movie clearly shows that the robots acted as if they felt pain and suffering.

I thought the ending made it pretty clear that in the end, they are cold calculating and very intelligent machines with no actual feelings or compassion, and we had been deceived the whole time. My interpretation I guess, but I feel like that makes the movie better.

Probably unconventional now, but one of those old can openers. Not the turning ones, the manual single-piece ones. Every can opener I have had dies after a year or two, but this one has been going strong for like… 50+ years.

luthis ,

I love the passion for your can opener! I’ll definitely take a look at your recommendation.

In return, here’s a pepper grinder my ex-chef dad raves about that seems to be pretty tough:

Freesia, because it reminds me of my childhood and Spring.

I have heard multiple times from different sources that building from git source instead of using tarballs invalidates this exploit, but I do not understand how. Is anyone able to explain that?

If malicious code is in the source, and therefore in the tarball, what’s the difference?

luthis ,

Tarballs are not built from source?

luthis ,

I… actually can’t tell if you’re taking the piss or if that’s a real episode.

I have so many questions about the whales.

Terrible weather, bucketing rain, not too cold, low visibility in fog / low cloud. Close proximity to mountain bike park. Full day of sliding down trails, getting covered in mud. Absolutely miserable, wet and dirty all day, struggling to maintain traction up the hills, frequently sliding out. Evening spa / hot pools to relax the muscles with a beer.

That’s heaven.

luthis ,

Pretty sure you could count not freezing to death, having a space to keep your things safe, health, stability etc as a value output.

luthis ,

Already happened in China in 1958, but I don’t believe ballots were involved…

Israel quietly rolled out a mass facial recognition program in the Gaza Strip (www.theverge.com)

Israel has deployed a mass facial recognition program in the Gaza Strip, creating a database of Palestinians without their knowledge or consent, The New York Times reports. The program, which was created after the October 7th attacks, uses technology from Google Photos as well as a custom tool built by the Tel Aviv-based company...

centering the mouse on the game

Maybe I’m missing something, but… why is this a problem? You can just like, move the mouse to where you want it?

I can’t replicate this issue on mine. I recently somehow broke Gnome (again) during an update, so I finally went back to a tiling WM (awesome this time). I start the game in a separate desktop, and then when I need to do things outside of the game, I just change to another desktop using the keyboard shortcuts. Pretty sure this is possible in all WM/DEs on Linux.

Apple will make you pay for anything apparently

Being a monarch or some kind of royalty seems to be excellent financially and often overlooked.

Define ‘strength’… against a dictionary attack? Brute force? Social engineering? ‘forgotten password/recovery questions’ hack? Stolen session cookie? Keyloggers?

If you’re not aware of the above, take some time to learn about each of those things and how good security practices counter each one.

The question is kind of like, ‘can you bake a cake?’ … probably yes, but it’s really missing a lot of essential information, like what kind of oven, what ingredients do you have, what’s your skill level, do you have arms, etc.

Any ‘passphrase’ can be secure or insecure, depending on the other surrounding factors. 2FA solves many security weaknesses.

luthis ,

It doesn’t matter in the slightest if you use 2FA.

luthis ,

Brute force is only a thing when either they have the password hash, or the login portal is susceptible to brute force (ie shite). Both cases are rare.

luthis ,

using sufficiently long passwords is your best defense

No, using 2FA is your best defense, along with wise recovery questions. It matters nothing if you know someone’s password, but can’t get the 2FA code.

luthis ,

Thank you for your sacrifice.

I definitely would have made this mistake.

luthis OP ,

Ah thanks, that’s my problem, it’s me.

luthis OP ,

Just reconfigured /etc/makepkg.conf to use extra cores and tmpfs… I’ve been compiling on the SSD with one core for so long it’s embarrassing.

luthis OP ,

holy shit!!! I’m definitely doing that!

luthis OP ,

Oh boy…

Total Download Size: 3390.65 MiB Total Installed Size: 13052.08 MiB Net Upgrade Size: 291.24 MiB

I wonder if I’m going to notice any better performance…

luthis ,

His Dark Materials trilogy… still so excellent.

luthis OP ,

‘Electrical safety’ for this one I think?

luthis OP ,

Good one, thanks!

luthis OP ,

Exactly this

luthis OP ,

For sure. I’ve done several high level driving courses for work. TL;Dr drive slower, increase follow distance. You may arrive 30 seconds late but it would eliminate the chance of so many accidents. Learning to ride a motorbike made my driving way better too.

luthis OP ,

Always assume it’s live…

luthis OP ,

amortization schedule

Thanks! excellent suggestion.

luthis OP ,

Learning about cars, engines and motorbike maintenance at this stage in life really opened my eyes. I could have easily been a mechanic or an engineer if I had the access to this knowledge when I was younger.

Now I do as much of my own maintenance as I can, and I’m pretty sure my engine will hit 400K before I start getting serious issues. None of it is overly complicated or difficult, and saves me money in the short and long term.

luthis OP ,

Even better, just some handy keywords to plug into google and we can open up that box of knowledge ourselves!

luthis OP ,

‘Basic appliance troubleshooting and repairs’

Thanks !

luthis OP ,

Way ahead of you haha F9 is awesome!

luthis OP ,

I would also add knowing how to sharpen a knife on a stone and never using the knife-blunteners that come prebuilt into knife blocks these days.

luthis OP ,

I know how to do a valve check… I probably should on my car. I did the valves on my motorbike. That was a real mission.

luthis OP ,

Wow… I was pretty shocked at the levels of ignorance with vaccines in recent history too.
