MY EYES!!! Bless you, internet denizen

Vimms Lair is getting removal notices from Nintendo etc. We need someone to help make a rom pack archive can you help? (slrpnk.net)

Vimms lair is starting to remove many roms that are being requested to be removed by Nintendo etc. soon many original roms, hacks, and translations will be lost forever. Can any of you help make archive torrents of roms from vimms lair and cdromance? They have hacks and translations that dont exist elsewhere and will probably be...

Damn…Vimms Lair was my favorite, friggin Nintendo doing what it does best…

As much as it pains me to say it, I agree and am annoyed at the amount of “no, fuck Google” in response. I agree, fuck Google, but not because they’re charging for a service so good that we all use it, fuck Google for its heavy user tracking of paying users. I understand it costs immensely to host the sheer amount of data that they do, and they still allow creators to have a portion of what’s made from each video. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about sticking to the man and all that, but to want a website that provides the same service without any costs involved is unreasonable. Peertube is the closest solution we see, and there are still costs involved for anyone hosting a server. I hate that YouTube is our only real option and I’d love something different, but they already have all of our content, and ultimately, they’re fairly reasonable with their demands (pay for our service or watch our ads). The amount of user tracking they do is what’s unacceptable to me, but that’s across all of their products, and I would love to see some enforcement of minimum required data.

Wife likes modding Sims and already bought some expansions before we moved her to Linux. They actually still add some free content sometimes, so we keep the wifey happy, and hope to almighty Gaben that EA doesn’t fuck things up too bad. Good news is that she knows that when things go wrong, it’s 100% on EA

I love this change, actually, I’m not a boring-text purist. Proper categorizing of data allows me to spot things at a glance much easier, and I’m all in favor of anything that can improve efficiency and understanding, especially for new folks, so we can improve product adoption.

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s a great callout, and something we should be considering more often

While I don’t have the answer as to why, it usually works if you just add a shift, ie. SHIFT+CTRL+V Many terminals also allow you to change the shortcut to copy and paste, so you can adjust for comfort’s sake.

This has me curious, not to derail the topic, but I always hear that ClamAV is the best way to go for Linux. Is there a free solution that you would recommend in place of it?

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

No one really talks about it and it’s in its infancy, but I’ve really been enjoying Stract.com

Nyanix ,

If you’ve used Kagi, it has a feature much like “lens” to raise the weight of fediverse results too

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s fair, I can’t say I’ve daily-driven it yet since I’ve still got my Kagi sub, but I’m thinking of defaulting it on my work computer to put it through its paces. It’s done fairly well with some of my tests, but definitely seems to still be getting refined, I’ve noticed recent information can be difficult to find on it

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ve been daily driving Manjaro for 4 years without any issues. Generally speaking I’d recommend seeing if there is a flatpak for an app before using AUR. I don’t update as soon as updates are out though, so usually any issues there may have been have been shmoothed over before I get to it.

Where are the good political songs? (piped.video)

I feel like there are lots of parallels between the eighties and now (recession/inflation, yuppies/inequality, skin-heads/fascists, hot-cold wars etc.) but there used to be protest music! Where is that stuff now? Music that’s intelligent and outraged - like we should be!...

Wow, that random news article I hit 16 days ago where the page kept flickering and reloading, but didn’t do that when I copied the URL into Brave… I really should’ve recorded that domain so I could defend myself against some stranger online!

Sarcasm aside, I don’t think it’s generally the major websites that you bump into this with, however, there are many edge cases that occur for plenty of folks, whether they’re in college and have to use that “secure browser” extension that only supports Chrome, or the fact that some websites, especially in business, that simply refuse to support browser and will prevent access otherwise.

I’m a Firefox user, so this isn’t to say that Chromium is the way by any means, but hopefully to shine a little light on the fact that we’re all on different parts of the web with different experiences, questioning their experiences so that you can hopefully find an extension or something to pin the blame them does not absolve them of their experience, just a show of elitism.

Firefox HAS gotten much better, but unfortunately, Capitalism’s gonna Capitalism

Irony being that if they got together, the “child” would sink further towards the discord server. It’s about predisposition now, this kid was always doomed to end up in that pit

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

While I agree, most people shouldn’t have to be concerned with it, you can’t deny the resource impacts of various languages, libraries and frameworks, like compare the memory usage of Discord or Teams with those of FOSS chat applications, and you’ll notice those two consistently eating much more memory. You can also compare compute speeds of a higher level language like Python vs lower level languages like Rust and you’ll find that Rust is quite a bit faster (though generally takes more dev time). So yes, users shouldn’t have to be concerned with involved languages, but if you’re running something on a low-resource device, such as a Raspberry Pi, those little details can make all the difference.

oooh, I’m going to have to try out nushell, I’m liking the look of that

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

I wish that was my experience, but Nvidia drivers on KDE Wayland have had a lot of oddities and issues that have caused me to go back to Xorg every time I’ve tried (12 times and counting). Wayland is a good move in the right direction, and I look forward to it, but it’s still being implemented.

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

It was a birthday gift from my wife, and lets not alienate people who don’t know computer hardware very well and pick up something from Best Buy. I agree that Nvidia sucks, and many of the issues are indeed their fault, but we also can’t neglect the fact that they own the vast majority of the market.

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh absolutely, this isn’t to say “Wayland bad”, it’s just to say that a large number of people may not have a smooth transition, so it’s hard to say “just do it”

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m sure hoping so, I haven’t followed development super closely, but I’m kinda imagining that the 3080 ti should be new enough :)

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

So far so good gaming-wise on the 3080 ti, not to deny I don’t bump into other random issues thanks to nvidia

I used to every day when I worked at a music shop and would play audio demos from it. The loss of the port made my job VERY difficult to do. Now that I work in a new field and have had to invest in some bluetooth earbuds, I don’t find that I’d need the port very often, though the audiophile in me misses it sometimes, especially since bluetooth can be so unreliable sometimes. Don’t miss the dangling cable, but the thing is, I can bluetooth earbud on a phone that has a 3.5mm jack too, the fact that they removed it from phones as a standard when it’s such a cheap part to implement is baffling, especially when we’re paying tons for phones. I can have 16gb RAM, and 8-cores, bud God forbid I want to be able to plug in a speaker and have my phone plugged into the charger at the same time, like a repurposed old phone for a home audio system or something.

I just deleted my entire library and redownloaded it.

A lot of my files were shitty 480p versions of movies from the Napster days. Now they’re all 1080p, with a few 720p exceptions (mainly tv series episodes). All in all 500 something files in total. Now just watching uTorrent slowly download them all. Hopefully my VPN keeps the eyes off of me…

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

I hope this is a sarcasm, lol

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

Ah, well my apologies, I made the incorrect assumption that it was. I’m headed to bed at the moment, so I apologize for the short explanation, I’ll try to come back with better facts and sources, but the short of it is that when you use a VPN, you’re effectively shifting trust from your ISP to your VPN provider. Trust that your data is not being mishandled, misused, is secured, and is not being used for further profits. If a VPN provider logs heavily and has a police raid or a subpoena, your data is still freely accessible. In all fairness, in using NordVPN, your traffic is still encrypted over the network, further securing you from attacks, but they tend to lean very log-heavy, and if I remember right, have had some security issues in the past, though don’t quote me on that, I want to come back more researched. Generally speaking, the consensus on Lemmy has been in favor of Mullivad since they log nothing and can even take anynomous payment, on top of being a very affordable VPN. Sorry again for my incorrect assumption regarding sarcasm, I’m used to a lot of hardcore privacy nerds on here. You’re better off with NordVPN than without is the fact of the matter, and good on you if you’re making use of it 😁

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

Well I’ll be damned, I trusted the hivemind on privacy communities on Lemmy and was needlessly jaded against a good service. I’ll stick my foot in my mouth.

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

While you’re correct, many of these generators are retaining the source image and only generating masked sections, so the person in the image is still themselves with effectively photoshopped nudity, which would still qualify as child pornography. That is an interesting point that you make though

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

Also a great way to get more performance and increase battery life. On a laptop, most folks would be hard pressed to see the difference between 1080p and a higher resolution.

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

Right there with you, I’m on the admin side of things, so the time it takes the app to start is a bigger deal to me than the full featured-ness of VS Codium, but provides contextual highlighting and some quality-of-life coding features that you won’t find it text editors.

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

God, I hear that…plus I usually need to meet with my coworkers in India, so I’m often needing to start meetings at 6 AM. I am nooooot functional that early

Who here uses a less popular Linux distribution? What made you choose it?

Hey fellow Linux enthusiasts! I’m curious to know if any of you use a less popular, obscure or exotic Linux distribution. What motivated you to choose that distribution over the more mainstream ones? I’d love to hear about your experiences and any unique features or benefits that drew you to your chosen distribution.

Nyanix ,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

Exactly where I’m at. I’ve had no issues with it, I have my home computer all set up and customized over the last 3 years, I’m not doing that again just to say that I’m on a different distro unless something goes very wrong.

What games can you recommend that didn't get the appreciation that they deserved?

I’ve been recently been thinking about Arkane Studio’s Prey which is a immersive sim, with a pretty good rogue like dlc, that probably has one of the strongest hooks of any game I’ve played. If you liked Halflife, System Shock, or Deus Ex it’s definitely worth a play....
