“They’re like, ‘Nah, I’m not feeling it today, I’m gonna come in at 10:30 a.m,’” Foster said of her younger colleagues in an interview with The Guardian.

Every single generation has thought this about the younger generation. Every single one.

In this case, I think the whole issue is exacerbated by the fact that giving sincere effort at work is so clearly a mug's game. It used to be that being disciplined about showing up and doing your job was difficult, but at least there was a reason to do it and develop the skill over time. Now? Unless you have some sort of unusual job where the management gives a shit about you, why would you?

I think you’re right. My guess is that as companies get greedier and work offers fewer and fewer benefits, people are less and less willing to work as hard as their parents did. Employers that don’t understand this are either genuinely ignorant or just pretending to be ignorant.

I sincerely doubt the idea that people are working less. I worked at a college with a lot of boomers. Great people, but I was radically more efficient than any one of them. The woman who had my job before (college print shop), would complain about the work load. I only really worked until lunch and caught up on every single thing I needed to do. Watched YouTube and coded the rest of the day. Helps that I had a boss that didn’t care as long as I was caught up.

Alas, the whole campus shut down last August.

halykthered ,

I was late to work last Friday, intentionally, because my cat fell asleep in my lap while I was eating breakfast. That moment meant more to me than making sure I was there in time, no matter what it may have impacted. Working to live, not living to work, is the rallying cry upper management needs to come to terms with.

EmergMemeHologram , (edited )

I spent a over a year trying to get a promotion while an ex boss who’s team I left was secretly sandbagging me.

I got an offer elsewhere and suddenly leadership asked “what number would keep you”. That was exciting until they followed up that raises and promos were frozen so I’d have to wait indefinitely.

I left.

mozz ,
@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

I did exactly the same thing early in my career.

  • Yo I'm underpaid, can I have more money?
  • No
  • Yo I found another job, I'm leaving, here's my notice
  • Oh shit, what if we gave you more money?
  • Definitely not, good luck tho
hydrospanner ,

That happened to me many moons ago.

“Hey so I’ve been here a few years and I’ve learned a lot more and I’m much more productive in my role. I’ve also learned the business enough that I’ve applied the skills I brought with me to the point that that’s now less than 10% of my workload, having become so efficient with it that you haven’t had to fill the other opening you had for my role because I’m handling it all. What do you think my prospects would be for a raise or promotion?”

“Sorry, no budget for a raise this year beyond your 1.3% annual raise (in a year with 4% inflation). And sorry but we can’t promote you either. You don’t have the skills for the position above yours, and besides, if we promote you out of your role we’ll be too under staffed in it.”

“So hire someone, let me train them for my role while you train me for the role I could promote to?”

“Nah that’s too expensive and we wouldn’t likely get the performance from them that we get out of you. Great job by the way. But no, no promotion, no raise.”

“Do you think that might change next year? Or like…where do you see my role here in the future?”

“We’re really happy with the roles you’re in and feel you’re well suited to it. And we feel that your pay is in line with the work you’re doing, so just keep up the good work.”

…so they basically told me that they’d keep overworking me and that I could expect to never get a significant raise or promotion ever again.

Two months later I got a job offer doing less work, work that was much more in line with my skills and preferred work…and a 38% raise. When I gave my notice, immediately they wanted to make a counter offer. I said I’d hear them out but based on our last conversation I doubted they were going to be willing to retain me…but sure I’ll listen.

Their offer:

No raise.

I could work a shift of mandatory 9 hour days to make more money (OT was always unlimited and freely available so this was literally just taking away my choice to work OT and forcing me into it).

No promotion.

But they would also start training me to assist another guy in the office with his work. Basically I could work longer hours and have more responsibilities for the same pay.

…and they were surprised when I refused.

They even had the gall to tell me how they felt betrayed that I only gave them 2 weeks notice, rather than agreeing to stay on until they could find my replacement and I could train them. When I pointed out that they literally told me they weren’t hiring my replacement as long as I stayed their only response was that they would have if they knew I was going to leave.

Some reporter from Salon, or Wire - some big site like that - participated in a controlled nitrogen hypoxia experiment on himself, and wrote about it. It was really interesting, but search engines are flooded with that Alabama execution, and I lost interest in searching for it.

bss03 ,

If you can find it www.imdb.com/title/tt1228865 is a good watch. It covers other methods, but it becomes clear how fast, effective, and painless nitrogen asphyxiation can be, as the presenter has to receive assistance in order not to die while attempting to get close to the experience (without dying).

It’s also a bit sad, as it makes it clear that for at least some capital punishment advocates, suffering is a desired part of the outcome.

I’d like to avoid death, but I can foresee a potential future when my quality of life is negative and no amount of volunteer effort can bring it positive. If that happens, I’d like to opt-in to mortality via inert gas (probably nitrogen) asphyxiation.

If we must have capital punishment, inert gas asphyxiation seems to be the best known way to do it. I’m not convinced we must have capital punishment, tho.

sxan , (edited )
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Nice! I hadn’t seen that.

People are going to need to die in controlled ways; whether in believing some people should be murdered by the State, or in believing people should be allowed to end their own lives, there are few Americans who don’t fall somewhere outside of the set of people who think there is never a case for controlled human death. Most of those people are probably Amish, or some branch thereof.

Alabama clearly fucked this one up - I guess that’s what happens when you drive all of the STEM folks out of your state. There was no reason - other than wanting a person to suffer, as you said - for it to have gone so wrong. Justified or not, if I were to ever find myself in that chair, asphixiation by nitrous nitrogen is absolutely the way I’d want to go. And that’s the most basic measure of humanity we need: do unto others.

Fun fact for friendly posters: companies that make gas detectors use lots of nitrogen because it’s a great “zero” gas. That is, 100% dry nitrogen equates to “nothing there” on sensors for all kinds of gases.

Including oxygen sensors! Did you know in air they measure 20.8% and in nitrogen they measure zero point zero?

But anyway… yeah these guys fucked up. A big problem with executions that people don’t talk about is that there isn’t a lot of overlap on the Venn diagram of people that are competent enough to perform an execution vs. the people who are willing to perform an execution.

In a healthy environment with a healthy mindset, you can discover a ton about yourself and how your mind works. Or, you can just have fun and socialize.

I use mushrooms medicinally and recreationally. If I want to chill and meditate I can. If I want to be social and have fun, I can. Regardless of my mood, they have been an awesome tool for managing my anxiety, social anxiety and depression. Best of all, it has been a key component in my recovery from alcoholism.

They are not for everyone, unfortunately. If you are not prepared for an accidental high dosage, it can be challenging. (There is so much variability in mushrooms, it can happen. Not so much with with substances like LSD.)

There’s a lot of useless truism verbiage here. Luckily it appears I’m more flexible than you, and will in fact claim that I think Kathy Hochul is working with the enemy of the people, corporations.

Prove it? Again, flexibility, allows me to draw conclusions based on previous actions. The facts are:

    • corporations don’t like competition.
    • Kathy likes playing both sides based on legislation that’s been seemingly good for the little guy, but generally seems to have a critical loophole, see the hobbled right to repair law for a perfect example.
    • Kathy has a budget to balance, and friends in many circles that are both left and right in these large corporations.

It is emphatically not a difficult conclusion to draw that she’s working with corporations on some things which are decidedly bad for New York’s general populace, and greatly advantage corporations. I personally give zero fucks about your fear of claiming she’s doing stuff without proof, as there is largely an asymmetry of information between the public and the inner machinations of the political class. We must suppose based on missing information, and I cannot see any reason for keeping such an archaic idea as a noncompetitive agreement.

I went on a cruise before COVID. The cruise line stressed washing hands to the point that it became annoying. (They have a “washy washy happy happy” song that they sing.) They had good reason to even before COVID as norovirus spreads like wildfire on cruise ships.

Overall, my cruise was a fun experience, but I don’t think I’d do it again - even setting COVID concerns aside. I’d rather go to some destination and walk around seeing the sights than be trapped on a giant boat with all those people.

    interceder270 ,

Nations won’t stop using oil as long as it is economically viable.

Banning cruise ships doesn’t matter if we still burn up the oil anyways.

    JustMy2c ,

You are correct. Not using oil in one place, will only make it MORE AFFORDABLE for China and other mega pollution providers.

    Maeve ,

Except 1) we sent our rubbish there and dumped it in the water, air and dirt, and it doesn’t stay put, 2) it doesn’t stay put, 3) we sent manufacturing there to avoid paying people minimum, let alone livable wage. How shallow thinking is amazes me.

    JustMy2c ,

What the h does that have to do with anything?

Fact of the current global economy is: you buy less oil (etc), other will snatch it up very quickly.

    Maeve ,

    Myopic much?

    JustMy2c ,

Sorry, but facts remain facts. Lots of good things you can do for nature but spending less oil just for the heck of it will probably mean some other country WITHOUT FILTERS IN THEIR CHIMNEYS will use it, at Lower price.

    Maeve ,

And that’s an old paradigm that must die. I rebuke your negativity. We have the power but some would deceive us into thinking we’re bound. I rebuke that too.

    JustMy2c ,

Sure, but it’s a real life situation that you won’t admit too. Other ways are needed between “saving” and banning

I didn’t say it isn’t. It’s sad that not only are we post-implicit and post-explicit communication. Thank you, Southern Strategy!
