I love this thing where buying something has been replaced by buying an alterable, revokable license to access that thing. It lowers costs and adds flexibility for producers, which allows them to save money, and they pass that savings on to me in the form of higher prices and my shit that I paid real fucking money for just disappearing one day. Then they explain that I never really “owned” it despite the fact that they use the word “own” in the marketing material, because it’s also legal to use words that have known definitions in agreements and then later explain that you were actually using an entirely different, secret definition of that word that’s actually the opposite of what you very purposefully implied.

39 checking in. in 2010 I was super broke, and when they shut my power off, my landlord said he wasn’t gonna renew the lease next month. that meant I had no food, no lights, and 30 days to come up with 90 days’ rent (first, last and security at a new place). I was lucky that I had someone to let me crash and start rebuilding my life, but I also promised myself I’d never for the rest of my life let my survival be dictated by luck and someone else’s kindness.

reverendsteveii ,

can confirm. source: did this 3 separate times

reverendsteveii ,

I can’t help but think that if this sort of thing proliferates that it will essentially hamstring reviews. This particular agreement might be just because the game is in alpha, but it’s part of a broader trend of ToS/EULA wishlists that are so restrictive that they’re probably illegal already buy in order to test that you have to go to court against a huge, overpaid legal team which leads to people having their basic rights violated.

reverendsteveii ,

which tv manufacturer was it that updated their eula and if you didn’t agree it bricked your tv?

reverendsteveii ,

even then, it’s essentially paywalling your rights. you need to go to court, wait for the matter to be adjudicated, hope it works out in your favor, run out any potential appeals, all while paying attorneys and not being able to do something you’re legally entitled to do. If you can’t do all that, then your rights are moot.

not my experience at all across 3 separate companies. Ime senior engineers are the highest level that still spends most of the day heads down most days, and that’s why I’m gonna stick it out at this level as long as I can.

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

reverendsteveii ,

okay but how do you establish any of those incentives with people who simply don’t exist? eventually the agreements fall apart as all parties involved are either dead or cryostatic, and the agreements will have to compel someone who was never party to them to take some sort of action. Like, I guess you could put a reward in trust but even then you’d need some sort of legal entity to manage and distribute it that would, itself, need an incentive in trust in order to continue, and so on in an infinite regression.

who picks what habits are good and what are bad? who decides what happens to data beyond this? can you going to mcdonalds twice a day be shared with your health insurer? can you going to that rally be shared with the local police? with your landlord? are you comfortable with everyone knowing everything? because there’s two things you do with data: analyze, and sell.

How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals

I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying “woke”, “critical race theory”, ““grooming””, and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open....

what’s your solution for online matchmaking in a squad shooter?

reverendsteveii ,

How do you propose bootstrapping a dedicated community? Genuinely asking, is the plan for there to be a dev-hosted service for a while until the community either develops or fails to develop, then to hand it off?

reverendsteveii ,

when the people who make the rules say “Sorry, the rules are the rules, there’s nothing we can do” remember that they literally gave a tree human rights just because they felt like it.

reverendsteveii ,

Technically, how all law really works at its core.

Well, that and the threat of overwhelming unilateral violence

reverendsteveii ,

trees having human rights would shake up this whole system, what with us having entire economic sectors based on slaughtering them wholesale. so either you can just do things as a one-off without generalizing them or you can just shake up the whole system. obviously, this case was the former, which means that other cases can be too. way to end it by being a dick, though.

I mean, suiciding the guy who flat out told his friends “If I commit suicide no I didn’t” shows that agent 747 was due to update his techniques and understanding.

reverendsteveii ,

Okay, but in the interest of not pretending that They Would Never™ can we all agree that if a THIRD whistleblower dies shortly before or during testimony that maybe something is happening here? You have the guy who committed suicide in the middle of depositions after telling his friend “If I commit suicide, no I absolutely did not” and now the healthy 45 year old who all of a sudden has multiple infections and a stroke. Is there a point at which you’d accept the idea that it’s a bit beyond coincidence that the deadliest place in the world seems to be the witness stand at a trial where Boeing is the defendant?

reverendsteveii ,

I’m just trying to establish conditions by which we all might agree that this is worth looking into before they happen. It’s easy to try to play connect the dots with the stars, there are a bunch of them already and you can just ignore the ones that don’t make the picture you want. I’m trying to add predictions to this theory in the name of the scientific method - if another whistleblower dies before his testimony is complete, that will be beyond what I can dismiss as coincidence.

I’ve been reading Graeber’s Bullshit Jobs and evidently they don’t fire people in Japan. If they want rid of you, they just give you less and less to do until you’re sitting in the office all day getting paid to do nothing, and the cultural expectation is that you quit out of shame rather than just accepting money for nothing.

reverendsteveii ,

I wouldn’t recommend anyone become a software engineer but its worked for me

reverendsteveii ,

I’ll be honest, I don’t know if I have to work. I do, because I like the work and I like the company I work for a lot, but I’m fairly confident that I could just show up to meetings twice a week and fudge paperwork for quite a while before anyone caught on that I’m just a hole they’re dumping money into.

reverendsteveii ,

That’s a thought I had as well, and based on my extremely limited knowledge and research I think it’s the conflict that’s being avoided. Rather than dealing with the person directly, you use indirect actions that signal the expected result when taken in that social context and then let the pressure of those expectations generate the result you need without you ever directly doing anything. My understanding is that the pressure is pretty enormous, your coworkers will basically shun you out of fear of being targeted themselves and resentment for all the work you’re not doing that they have to pick up instead.

reverendsteveii ,

yeah, I’ve been really fortunate.

reverendsteveii ,

what would you have done about world war II?

reverendsteveii ,

then lets assume a similar situation pops up, as they do from time to time. someone is hellbent on violence, is already committing a lot of violence, and is escalating rather than stopping. How would you architect a peaceful solution to that, and what would you say to the families of the people who were killed while you were architecting that peaceful solutions. It’s all well and good to say “there has to be some more peaceful solution” but then you have to actually find it and implement it.

reverendsteveii ,

this happened to be back in the 90’s & 00’s when biden et al. spearheaded non-dischargeable student loan debt; anti-gay marriage; and a ban on gays in the military and now i’m permanently anti the party that rolled back don’t ask don’t tell, embraced marriage and healthcare rights for queer people and have forgiven tons of student loan debt. I’m definitely not a psy-op. Pay no attention to the fact that no one calls them ‘the democrat party’ except people who have 1000+ hours viewing fox news.
