If anything, one should absolutely take care of mundane tasks with downtime between productive tasks. If their workflow allows for short breaks, it doesn’t make a difference to the employer if nothing is done or an unrelated task is done.

They pay people to complete tasks for their corporation. They don’t own the worker’s bodies or minds due to the virtue of providing a paycheck.

This concept of whole ownership of people really is baked into US social consciousness.

My slopes aren’t as slippery, where did you buy yours? I get why you said that, given the tumultuous nature surrounding Israel since it’s founding in the 1940’s, but the Arab nations said they would cease aggression when Israel did. Perhaps Israel having it’s sticks taken away is a step towards a peaceful Middle-East?

Brings to mind the dichotomy of Israel and Russia. Ivans blow up a school, and it’s a tragic warcrime. Shlomos wipe out a school, and they have the inherent right to self defense.

Since mods removed my comment but failed to elaborate why, I’m going to repost it.

The comment may not be entirely related to the article directly, but why have a world news community if not for discussing world events?

The starliner is to return unmanned, according to this article. Can you imagine being on the ISS, and watching the ship you should have taken shred apart into burning rain as it attempts to pierce the veil of our atmosphere.

With more weapoms shipments being sent since Oct 7th, than days have passed since Oct 7th, it’s absolutely time for prompt action. I admire Mr. Sanders and his resolve. With this resolution, maybe we can prevent another 30k deaths in nearly 10 mons time. This is a bold undertaking, reflecting the collective will of most other countries that condemn the Palestinian genocide. Well done.

There’s a show called Kevin Can Fuck Himself that uses a laugh track to bias the audience in favor of certain characters.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

My comment was absolutely an understatement to generate curiosity. I do agree that Kevin Can Fuck Himself is a hidden gem. I’ve read that some people were saying the sitcom element takes them out of moment, but I fear they’re robbing themselves from a great experience by not continuing.

I get to pay 4k a year, just to be able to be charged only 6k out of pocket. After that 10k, I still would owe 10% of every charge after that.

Or I can pay 2k a year for the privilage of being charged a little over 8k out of pocket. After that, I’d owe 20% of everything after.

So every year, I get to gamble my prospective income on how much healthcare I think I’ll need. I want to save on monthly costs? Hopefully nothing emergent happens. Expecting a procedure? Now I’m out a few extra hundred a month just so I don’t have to pay more than 10% after already paying 6k.

All this is assuming I don’t get denied coverage and have to foot the whole bill anyway. I need to see a specialist, though, and the only one nearby isn’t in my network. I gotta drive an hour and a half or pay 100%.

I’m paying more than the savings I’m able to put away to assholes who own yachts bigger than the house I rent.

Who would view this system as favorable?

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

I think we’re all fucked, because the monsters who run all of this value money over other’s lives, and it helps with military retention. I’m sure there are people who wanted to get out of the service, but were worried about healthcare costs.

The private sector doesn’t care, as long as the lines keep going up. And the government doesn’t want to lose one of their sticks to keep people on their bases and ships.

So they’ll buy mansions, and yachts, and travel the world. While I have to sit at home, just waiting for the day to be able to afford a vacation. And I’ll sit and watch as our tax money is used by private businesses for stadiums, or mine-resistant vehicles for suburban cops, or to turn brown children into skeletons.

All the while, you’re sitting there with constant pain and all the world cares about is the amount of testosterone in athletes at the Olympics. That’s what’s driving conversations these days. More circuses to distract us from the real problems.

Perhaps their tails are easily or often damaged?

So measuring from full fore to aft might give inconsistent results among other similar variables for the examined species, such as location, age, and weight. Going booper to pooper might give more reliable data, if the tails are often snipped at the tip by other reptiles, predators, disease, rogue mohels, swamp boat propellers, or hastily closed doors.

This is my best guess, I’m not lizardologist or a measuresmith.

What a garbage article. It makes it seem like the consequences of Israel’s genocide is actually a masterful gambit of Iran using militia groups to tighten a noose on Israel. It fails to mention the genocide at all. Also the way it weaves in the threat of war with China, and hints at nuclear war, is peak fearmongering and sabrerattling. I figured Forbes would be a shitty source, and I was not surprised.

The whole article is based on saying that war is unavoidable, but also fails to mention that those same Iranian backed militias have all said they would cease aggression if the genocide stopped. Israel’s commitment to this genocide is the only thing that guarantees further war.

Straight out of the Batman animated series.

Boeing accepts a plea deal to avoid a criminal trial over 737 Max crashes, Justice Department says (apnews.com)

Boeing will plead guilty to a criminal fraud charge stemming from two deadly crashes of 737 Max jetliners after the government determined the company violated an agreement that had protected it from prosecution for more than three years, the Justice Department said Sunday night....

There’s a pest control salesman who goes door to door every year, who I can’t stand. Not only does he say outright incorrect things, but he can’t take no for an answer. Every polite refusal turns into, “You know what, we can knock 80 bucks off that right now” or “How about we just make the first month free.”

Next time he comes knocking, I’m going to be immediately upfront. I’m not interested in paying money to spray poison, that will end up in the canal and the river, to kill bugs that birds and frogs and bats could be eating.

Some skinny girl climbed into my lap at a college house party. I was very fucked up. For some reason, I thought a good thing to say was, “Why not, I’ve fucked fatter chicks.” She immediately got up and we never spoke again. No clue why I said that. I never even got her name, which is a shame, because I’d like to apologize.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

Interesting, I’d like to do more reading on the subject. Do you have any preferred sources?

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

The first link referenced in this article. That article mentions the punishments and the severity of the crime required for those punishments.

This article seemed to only latch onto the more dramatic portions and threats of the death penalty to generate clicks.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

How am I being a tankie?

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

I stated my point in my original post.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, it’s legal language that’s been translated, so I can’t expect vernacular clarity.

I don’t get the tankie comments, either. My original post was about the article being biased towards sensationalism. It seems lots of people have strong opinions and feel the need to lash out.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

It seems that way. I only addressed the article, and some of them were talking as if I was advocating death penalties for people expressing themselves.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

Can you elaborate?

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

The clickbait nature of the headline does seem to imply that it’s death right off the bat. I never said that death wasn’t on the table, as unfortunate as that is. The death penalty is far from the only outcome, which is difficult to surmise from just this one article alone.

However, I’m not going to edit the comments I made in an attempt to present it differently. My goal was to get people to read into it, question their assumptions, and not take the article at face value. Media literacy is a skill and involves going well past the headline, so hopefully some people saw that while trying to prove me wrong.

I feel the downvotes are unjustified as well, but I’m not going to lose sleep over it. It’s a sensitive subject for a lot of people, and I saw that going into it.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

I used google’s webpage translation. It does mention death as a penalty, but it’s far from the only possible outcome.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

I saw this duck over here, quacking and waddling around, so I called it a duck. Some people took offense, apparently. There was some good discourse, though.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

Excellent, thanks.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

My comments aren’t advocating, ignoring, or accepting the death penalty. I can’t speculate to China’s intent behind the law, or assume it’s application.

I was addressing the sensationalist nature of the article, about how it latched onto the passage about death for the purpose of generating clicks.

To discuss the why or the how behind the law is another matter entirely and goes well beyond the scope of my comment. I’m sure there are plenty of discussions out there that cover those topics, however.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

I never discounted the inclusion of the threat of death, I only commented on the fixation on it in that article. Of course the inclusion of the death penalty needs to be a part of the discussion.

We can spend the rest of forever discussing what-ifs and hypotheticals. I don’t think it does the original discussion justice to boil it down from the severity of secession to parking issues. I fear your simplification misrepresents the original discussion, as the nuance of the China-Taiwan situation cannot earnestly be recreated with parking violations in a city.

But yes, to answer your question, I do think that journalistic integrity is important at any level.

If you keep reading in that translated article linked in the original article, it says that if you change your stance and make an honest attempt to undo the damage you did, the charges may be dropped. So one could end up with no punishments at all.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

Absolutely. I agree that life would be so much simpler if it was only black and white issues, but rarely is that the case. And I get it, those binary beliefs are comfortable. But we need to endure the difficulty of questioning our assumptions, pushing out of that simplistic worldview, and learning. It’s the only way we grow as people.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

How so?

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

Do you have any other sources that can be verified? Otherwise, I’ll have to dismiss your claim as baseless. But like I said in other comments, I’m referring to the article and how it sensationalized the death penalty for website clicks, not about China’s intent behind the law or it’s application.

halykthered ,
@halykthered@lemmy.ml avatar

Baseless, got it. Thanks.
