Anyone who has made copies of videotapes knows what happens to the quality of each successive copy. You’re not making a “treasure trove.” You’re making trash.

Microsoft also wants to use 50 gigabytes of your hard drive space (for the Recall snapshots) and make you buy AI co-processors or their software won’t work. They want to use your property to create their own Skynet.

I’m actually enjoying the Linux learning curve because I know it’s not working against my interests.

On the other hand, every time I’ve had to go “under the hood” with Windows (Registry settings, config files) it’s been to prevent Microsoft from doing something sh*tty to me.

A lot of these streaming services are ultimately owned by the same company. Ever had a favorite show, where only seasons 1,3 and 5 are available on one “service” and only seasons 2 and 4 are available on the other? This lets the owner of the series double-dip customers on subscription fees.

Who would have guessed that a social media platform owned by an apartheid-loving fascist would trend right wing? I mean, Musk is such a stable genius.

Microsoft is bringing annoying Windows 11 Start menu ads to Windows 10 (www.neowin.net)

Let’s put it this way; when Microsoft announced its plans to start adding features to Windows 10 once again, despite the operating system’s inevitable demise in October 2025, everyone expected slightly different things to see ported over from Windows 11. Sadly, the latest addition to Windows 10 is one of the most annoying...

My entire Steam library works on Linux Mint.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

Also, almost every older game, like Deus Ex or Giants: Citizen Kabuto, I can run separately under Wine. The only game that doesn’t quite work is NOLF 1. No music. (I can’t seem to get DirectMusic working properly in Wine yet).

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

YouTube is also aggravating customers who use their official apps by increasing the frequency and length of the ads. In just 4-5 months, I’ve seen YouTube ad lengths on Roku go from 10-15 seconds to 30 seconds, to a minute.

They’re trying to recoup lost ad revenue by pissing off the one demographc most likely to sit in front of the TV the longest.

Israel Accused of Running “Torture Camps” as Video Emerges of Soldiers Raping Palestinian Prisoner (www.democracynow.org)

The problem with media platforms like Reddit and Twitter is that they take place in a single Instance, with thousands of communities. So it’s easy for one person (like an Elon Musk) to completely screw it up for millions of people.

With Lemmy, everything is decentralized. Communities are spread out and duplicated over hundreds of Instances in many countries. So if somebody ruins one Instance or community, people can just hop over to the second or third most popular Instance, and the original instance will dry up and disappear.

I haven’t had any problems running my Steam library under Linux Mint. Older games, like Deus Ex and Giants: Citizen Kabuto I can run directly in Wine.

If I could get Vortex Mod Manager working properly under Linux, I wouldn’t need Windows at all.

Does everyone hate Google now? | Google's story over the last two decades has been a tale as old as time: enshittification for growth (arstechnica.com)

Google’s story over the last two decades has been a tale as old as time: enshittification for growth. This. It feels to me like driving a stick shift when you’ve been using an automatic transmission for years. You have to do a little more fiddling but I honestly don’t mind learning a new OS that isn’t actively working against me.

With Windows . . . on the other hand . . . every time I’ve had to go “under the hood” (tweak Registry settings, Config files, etc) it’s been to prevent Microsoft from doing something crappy to me.

KOSA passes Senate | ACLU: This bill would not keep kids safe, but instead threaten young people’s privacy, limit minors’ access to vital resources, and silence important online conversations for all (arstechnica.com)

Tesla recalls 1.8 million cars because their hoods can open while driving (arstechnica.com)

The electric car manufacturer Tesla had to issue a massive recall this month to fix faulty hood latches that can open while its cars are driving. NutWrench ,

Although the problem is with the hood latch, as with many Tesla safety recalls, the problem can be fixed with an over-the-air software patch

This is what happens when you run all the car’s mechanical and electronic switches though some cheap, sh*tty tablet interface. Instead of directly wiring them to lights on the dashboard.

When you car can connect to the Internet, it becomes a data-mining tool that tells everyone your business. Companies would LOVE to have all that juicy location data that only Google has right now (from your phones). Insurance companies would LOVE to know your driving habits to have any excuse at all to jack up your premiums.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

There’s nothing subtle about Trump. So when he say something blatantly stupid and evil, it doesn’t need translation or interpretation. If he says, “we’re going to ‘fix’ voting so that you’ll never have to worry about voting ever again” there only ONE way to interpret that. Believe people when they show you what they really are.

It also doesn’t help that our mainstream, “liberal news media” (you know, the one that’s owned by only six corporations) is constantly running interference for Trump.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

This. And “cryptically declares?” Really? Trump is always dumb, blunt and obvious. Believe people when they show you what they really are.

And then, you boot their servers from a Linux Live USB, run TimeShift to restore the last system snapshot, refuse the latest patch from Cloudstrike and they all lived happily ever after.

Our government was corrupted the moment the courts accepted the “Corporations are people/ Money is speech” arguments. At that moment, the government stopped representing the needs of ordinary people and only represented the needs of billionaires and their lobbyists.
