Are there any genuine benefits to AI?

I can see some minor benefits - I use it for the odd bit of mundane writing and some of the image creation stuff is interesting, and I knew that a lot of people use it for coding etc - but mostly it seems to be about making more cash for corporations and stuffing the internet with bots and fake content. Am I missing something...

Everyone has access to the same tools

go make me something with Sora to see what kind of equal access you think you have

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

Right, it's a new technology, its usage is being curated. Even once they release a publicly accessible application, it'll be like going to the hammer renting store, you get to go there and use a hammer, for a fee sometimes, you cant bring the hammer home or own it, they regulate what you can work on with it, it can be overused and inaccessible while demand is high, they can discontinue access when they want.

And they can and do give more access to wealthier clients.

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

and the collapse of building 7 occurred exactly as you would expect from a building fire

It wasnt the first skyscraper fire, but it was the first and still only skyscraper to collapse from a fire. So no i wouldnt say its expected at all.

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

Even if you ask them

"The collapse of WTC 7 is the first known instance of a tall building brought down primarily by uncontrolled fires. The fires in WTC 7 were similar to those that have occurred in several tall buildings where the automatic sprinklers did not function or were not present."

Mayor Jacob Frey quips that choosing remote work over office makes you a 'loser' (Minneapolis, MN, USA) (bringmethenews.com)

“I don’t know if you saw this study the other day, but what this study clearly shows, is when people have the ability to come downtown to an office and don’t, when they stay home, sitting on their couch with their nasty cat blanket diddling on their laptop … if they do that for a few months, you become a loser! claim the internet titan artificially inflates prices

All prices are artificial.

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

They both always are. Companies make up the prices, and price increases. Predicting how much folks are willing to pay.

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

Its a common misconception, prices are never based on cost, its what people are willing to pay. Now, what people are willing to pay can be influenced by perceived costs, but thats pretty artificial too. The prices at a restaurant for example vary pretty wildly in profit margins. Pretty famously, sodas cost cents to make, but people are willing to pay orders of magnitude more.

Because AI and Crypto use so much electricity, what if a law was made that they had to power it with green energy?

Something on the lines of if your company facility is using over X amount of energy the majority of that has to be from a green source such as solar power. What would happen and is this feasible or am I totally thinking about this wrong...

We already got plenty of nuclear fusion output with no energy input on our part. But folks dont want solar panels

That's fair. Im big solar fanboy but if more people were fusion researchers the world wouldnt be a worse place.

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

We have all the technology for energy storage we need, it just needs to be built. Theres gravity storage like pumped hydro, pressure storage, thermal storage, flywheels.

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

we've had grid scale storage for a long time now. storing energy for things like cars needed new technology for weight concerns, but for electrical utilities? You lift a weight upwards with an electric motor during peak times, and let the weight down to spin a generator when you need it. It's been in application with pumped hydro storage for a while.

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

something really huge

yeah, we use a lot of energy, absolutely every form of energy production we have involves really huge things. Massive mines, dams, pipelines, oil rigs, nuclear cooling towers, fossil fuel power plants, oil tankers. They just have to be built. we can excavate dams, build solid weight lifting facilities, molten salt storage, make arrays of flywheels. There's a ton of answers to energy storage already, they dont involve resources with any kind of scarcity, they just have to be built.

Biden Threatens to Veto Bill That Would Help Israel but Not Ukraine (www.nytimes.com)

President Biden vowed on Monday to veto a House Republican bill that would provide $17.6 billion in aid to Israel, calling it a “cynical political maneuver” intended to hurt the chances of passage for broader legislation that would provide money for Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan and the U.S. border....

blazera ,

We got the biggest and most important climate bill ever

Nah that bill got ruined by "negotiation and compromise" and opened up millions new acres of land leasing for oil and gas extraction. We're gonna continue breaking emissions records every year

We'd get Israel and not Ukraine aid.

Because we've elected zionists and russian agents. And because of that this bill is likely to not pass, and each side can point at a different part of the bill to justify opposing it.

Can Taylor Swift help Canada's seal meat industry, senate committee asks (ottawacitizen.com)
